I did some forum searching & Googling but I'm not able to find a reliable, working method of getting CWM recovery on the Note II. I want to keep the stock ROM, but not the stock recovery. I'm rooted with stock recovery right now.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
look harder. Perhaps find a thread talking about root in the at&t noteII general forum.

"look harder"? That doesn't help me much. I used that "search in this forum" feature, where I typed in "clockworkmod" and came up with no results. A threat talking about rooting doesn't necessarily mean it will discuss CWM (I also checked the thread here for information on CWM, since that's the root method I used, but no dice). Not really sure which thread you want me to play hide & seek with.
Sorry to say but the person who responded to you is right... look for a thread that contains root for the note II
Really? You want to root your phone, but you are incapable of following simple directions? I did everything but give you a direct link to the thread. I told you which forum, which subforum, and a keyword to look for in the thread title.
If you aren't able to handle it, please DO NOT root your device and please DO NOT install a non-stock recovery.
Edit...im sorry guys...I want to keep this place pleasant and friendly.
I googled it and found it here and on the site I quoted.

Which part about my post is rude? I think you might be misinterpreting...
I'm very serious that if you are unable to find the post with the information you want based on the instructions I gave, that you have a high risk of screwing up your phone by flashing stuff on it. That's not being rude. That's trying to be helpful. Asking you to PLEASE not flash your phone is so I (and others like myself) don't have to spend the time trying to help you fix your phone afterwards (and so you don't have to spend the time asking for that help.)
Not everything on these forums is spelled out and spoon-fed to users. It's assumed that they have a certain amount of innate ability and prior knowledge. Lack of that ability and knowledge results in broken phones. I'm trying to help someone like that in another thread - they flashed the wrong thing to their phone and now, basically, they are screwed.
Granted, I might not come off as "newbie friendly" or even "user friendly." I'm an engineer. I'm one of the folks that make the things that people like you flash. For some reason people like me don't usually come off as being "nice."
I'm going to try (again) to be nice. Here's a link to a post I think it'd be good for you to read. This post tries to explain in a different way what I'm trying to say here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
I suspect that if/when you understand that post, you'll better understand my replies.
take care and good luck
Gary
Thanks, it's sometimes hard to read tone on here, so i apologize for any misunderstandings.
I think i have a really bad time finding information, not because I'm a newbie at flashing, but probably more so due to the fact that development in this phone is so fresh, there isn't much information to centralize yet. But once i find the information i need i can usually handle the work involved.
I ended up finding the post you were talking about (well, i can only assume). Unfortunately i didn't find a walkthrough or step by step instructions. But at least i know a better place to find the information.

Does it have to be cwm? Because for rooting, chainfire has cf root. And for recovery, twrp already supports our device. It's all in the original development sub forum. Won't be hard to find either. Those two things are the only threads existent there for now

Actually, that's a good idea. I had used the CWM Recovery originally on my i317, but found that when I tried to restore a backup I made with it, that nothing was actually restored. TWRP, on the other hand, seems to work okay backing up and restoring.

Twrp has come a long way. To be fully honest, I kinda hated it at first, I don't even have a clue why, since I didn't try it prior to forming those feelings about it. But then I actually got to flash it, after some self convincing, on my s2 lte and it grew on me very quickly. And now, I prefer it over cwm

If you need exFAT then use CWM which comes with CF_root which you can find the Original Dev forums. Use Odin, click on PDA then select the CF-Root.*.att file. It's that easy.
One thing about TWRP is that it doesn't support exFAT formatted SDCards, so if you have a 64GB like most folks on here & need exFAT for larger than 4GB file size, then CWM is the only way to go.
I think i may just wait a bit until more options become available. I don't need it right away. I'd rather sick with CWM since that is what I'm familiar with.

That's entirely up to you. Although I would suggest giving twrp a go, even just to try it out. My favorite features in it are the option to name your backup in recovery prior to creating it, and the fact that it actually does things faster than cwm

Considering that the reflash looks like it will be released any day/minute now, there are some things that I wanted to start a discussion on. Some of these may be answered at the time of the release by unrevoked... but none the less I'm going to start:
1) Koush's recovery has nandroid. I think that someone (maybe me when I get off of work) should write up a quick write up on how to use nandroid to back up your system/use it to flash new roms
2) I think that Koush's Rom Manager will work with our phones, not to mention that i really like it . There should be a quick post on what this is, and how to use this.
For all of the "seasoned" people in here, before posting "this in unnecessary, this already has been done for other phones, etc....": If you're going to post, please post something relevant and educational for people instead, or just request that the thread be closed. Excellent thread, thanks for the start looking forward to some useful information to absorb
Seconded
I am about as far from a computer/tech n00b as you can get, but I am extremely new to android. I would certainly welcome a primer of this nature.
Moderately seasoned nerd, but the incredible is my first smart phone. I absolutely welcome a "first-timers" thread with regards to rooting / tweaking this phone.
A preemptive thanks is definitely deserved, especially the level of drama I saw while trolling in the forums here, more-so over the past few weeks, and while some of the unfortunate "false starts" that always invariably occur with a startup of this nature.
Again, a heart-felt thank-you, and I really look forward to learning a new process on a completely different platform. I continue to eagerly await a streamlined process, especially one that I can learn from, and violate more to tweak my experience.
Feel free if I can provide any help / support from here.

I will search XDA tonight, and provide links to "help" guides in either the first post *edited* or make a new thread. Good point, no need to re-invent the wheel. However, a sticky thread in this particular forum is probably needed.
Thanks,
Thanks for making a thread like this. Even though this is my first smart phone, I have a good amount of experience with similar things so I've picked up on most of it relatively quickly.
I was able to obtain a beta copy of the recovery flash tool from hanging around the IRC chat and was able to get my ClockworkMod Recovery up and running.
I have one question about nandroid though; I was able to backup the majority of my files but when it gets to the final step of backing up sd-ext it gives me a message saying "No sd-ext found" and that it cannot be backed up. What exactly is the sd-ext and is it essential to have backed up before I start installing ROMs?

It means you don't have an ext format partition and thus it wasn't backed up. Which is exactly how it should be right now.

Don't think so. Koush wrote the recovery, koush works on cm. Probably wrote into the recovery, nandroid, to look for it and back it up. Notice that his didn't find anything?

Of course, that's the problem, a recovery that presupposes the CM way of ext-fs/apps2sd presupposes someone was using a ROM that requires it otherwise, that recovery isn't recommended AT ALL, because nandroid, fix permissions, etc all look to the wrong place for ~/app, /app-s, ~dalvik, etc . . . non-CM/pre-5.0.x ROMs do things differently with EXT, if at all. See what I'm getting at?

I know Firerat over on Dream is good at writing switches to make appropriate exceptions for different SPLs, apps2sd and partitions schemes. If push come to shove we could ask him for suggestions. And I awfully concerned because A) I don't like modding without nandroids and B) I prefer Amon-RA's recoveries and his options for CM5/non-CM Roms

The way I understand is the locked or bug in NAND will not allow for a recover. It removes all SU permissions on reboot.

Have you contributed anything to the G2 root effort? Some of the best Android hackers are working to root this phone; in fact many of the same ones who came up with the method you posted in your first post.

Haha good luck. People keep posting about what should be done yet have no idea what actually goes on to do any of this stuff. It isn't as simple as "making" it, you have to know HOW to make it. Please go to the think tank thread.

Look not to rain on ur parade buddy but in order to do that on the mts you first had to install the enginering img to the phone that allows unsigned packages. Now since we have a copy of the eng img for the g2 (we as in the devs not me) and the phone will not let you downgrade to it so therefore the mts way of loading a custom recovery won't work. I traded in my mts to get my g2.

HELP!!.....I downloaded and installed Treve's app to remove CIQ
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247108
After I downloaded and installed, I ran the first option of remove CIQ. It said successful and then said please reboot.
When I rebooted, all I get now is the boot screen that says Samsung Galaxy SII and then it just sits there.
Did I brick my phone?
Background info: My phone is rooted but not with a custom rom or kernal or odin. It is completely stock and I rooted using sfhub's method.
You didn't brink it. I would suggest that you go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
download the stock rom and get the pit file for it as well and read up on odin real quick and reflash your phone with this rom to go back to stock. Also the post you linked is for HTC phones not Samsung from what I can see with a quick glance of it. If you want to reroot and remove CIQ I would suggest getting one of the roms from this section that already has CIQ removed from it and not using that app again.
I don't know if you are bricked. But why would you flash something for the HTC phones when you have a Samsung its really not to hard to find what you need you just had to look in our dev section and you would have found your answer there to remove ciq

Sfhub's rooting method is super easy, so easy that people that shouldn't be rooting can now root!
My suggestion is run the .tar file like mentioned above. Once you are back to stock, you might want to read a lot before flashing anything again...
I didn't flash anything previously. I just installed an app and bought the key in the market.
While that forums heading is regarding HTC phones, on page 11 is where the app actually is listed and the description states that it is for all phones including Samsung.
I am able to do volume up and power and get to the Samsung options of factory reset but when I choose this, it pops up asking for password. What would that be or is it just my own lockscreen password?
Edit: Yes my lockscreen password is the password. Did the factory reset and it is still coming up to only the Samsung screen.

Agreed, a good amount these people really shouldn't be flashing anything cause they don't even understand at all what it is they are actually doing. They just hear about it and assume its got to be easy cause they own a pc and can operate windows explorer. I can't tell you how many times people start a thread about if they bricked there phone when 99% of then haven't bricked it at all. which is completely obvious to any one who knows there way around android and get what it its there actually doing to there phone. I feel really bad for the OP and all the others who attempt to flash things without a clue as to whats going on. OP ( which means original poster, aka the guys who started the thread ) you need to search for a stock recovery .tar and run it using odin and you will be fine. Just like the guy above started. Can't figure out odin or aint sure what it is? Use your new best friend www.google.com to find the answer including the one thats already answered in post several times with the same topic name that this one is. nothing is wrong with your phone that can't easily be un done. You will be fine. Pm me if you really can't figure it out amigo
Ok guys, is the purpose here at XDA to help others or just talk down to them and belittle them for not being android guru's?
While I completely and graciously appreciate your advice and help, I am 42 not 15. Also, while I am far from having the extensive knowledge that most of you have, I am not a n00b to all of it and have a pretty good understanding or roms, flashing, etc.
Back to the topic. Again, I did not flash anything. I installed an app. While I agree that I could have found everything needed here in the e4gt forum to remove ICQ (which I did previously but didn't flash), I decided to try the app created by TrevE because it also states that it is for Samsung too, even though it is in the HTC forum and the post topic states HTC.
I installed the app because it also has many additional privacy options, not just CIQ. I did my homework (at least I thought I did) and read everything there and here before doing so. I did not just see something shiny and install it without at least knowing the parameters. Also, since I wasn't flashing anything, I thought installing an app would be safer. If it worked great, if it didn't just uninstall it. Again, since TrevE states that it is also for Samsung, I thought I would be safe.
I guess I will have to do what most of you mentioned and just have to use
[ODIN][STOCK][TAR] SPH-D710.EG30_CL435803_REV05_user.tar.md5
I was just asking for advice if there was another method or something I was overlooking before taking that route.
As always, thank you guys for your help and your advice. Just remember, at some point you were n00bs too Much love and respect to all who contribute, help and teach.........Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Why are you so against using the TAR file? It will get you back up and running and then you can root with the same process that you used the first time.
My apologies for my prior post, we have all been there and done that. I lack sleep right now...
I did the exact same thing the other day and had the exact same results. I ended up flashing a stock kernel with cwm, then flashed a ROM and was able to get it to boot. I didn't wipe when I flashed so I was able to recover all my data. My next step is to use the stock tar, then I'm gonna run the auto root and restore all my data with titanium.

The lesson here is to read things before jumping blindly in and phailing up your device.
The only method to remove CIQ from Samsung devices is my noCIQ series of mods (which are included in many custom ROMs).
Lesson learned.......
Even though TrevE said it works for Samsung, it did'nt. I shoulda just did the noCIQ from Konane that I originally downloaded. I was just hoping some of the other privacy issues addressed in TrevE's apk would be in noCIQ.
Great work Konane and thanks for your contributions.

@OP glad you fixed your phone because a bricked phone is no fun. Although I know you may of gotten upset at this statement. I have to agree that too many people root their phones with out even understanding how to repair it if something goes wrong. Not for nothing but my phone cant boot up its wiping caches then trying to flash a new rom. If that dont work then its time to pray...
Like I said glad you fixed it and no disrespect but the statement above especially read a lot before flashing is something more people need to do... IMHO

Search before jumping and make sure you are good with returning to stock. All of this info is in the forums already.
Thanks but that doesn't look like a step-by-step instructions on what I was looking for. :/
Now is this how we start the new year off....OP the information has been provided, just take your time and do your homework, give attention to detail, so you do not wrong your device.
Other Members just provide as you have done, and no need to bash, Thank You all.

I was going to say something mean but I decided not to.
I still don't see instructions anywhere on that page on how to do this root. Pretty sad I am getting better responses on other Android sites than this one. Plus what I do see is his rom has issues with 4.1.2 update.

You amaze me but I will try one more time to help.
Look at the link I gave you in post 2. Download the app in post 1 of that thread. Install it and follow the instructions from that thread. They are there and detailed. You press a few buttons and are rooted. There is no ROM on that thread.
I say this in all seriousness and am not trying to be mean, but you need to stop and think before you move forward. If you are having trouble reading this thread and the one I linked to you, then you probably don't understand what to do without causing damage. Read, read, read, read, and then read some more before you go any further. There are also numerous threads in this forum giving detailed step by step instructions.

This video might help you, it exlains the thread/app Gvndeb60 posted:

There is a guide on Android Central with videos may help too! Same for process for the 4.1.2 update.
If you are having trouble understanding All those easy steps that are laid out for you. You should do research before rooting. Some things include learning what you can do when you root your device. It won't take long if you have some background in editing your phone system. But by the looks of it your going to seriously mess up your phone. And even if you are getting better responses on other sites. If you don't learn to respect people here you will be confused because every site that talks about rooting or provides a rom will lead you back here. This community is huge so learn to embrace and read threads before attacking our fellow members.

I am having difficulty finding the thread here and I saw a few websites but not sure if I trust them. What is the best method, how-to for someone that has never rooted an android device before (done many iphones). Any good picture step-by-step procedures anywhere?
Thanks guys. I searched but had a hard time finding it here vs Google. Here is one I found, but unsure about it.

I did the root, but removed it since it broke my camera. So I need a root that does not break my camera and that doesn't require replacing those files as I saw online many not recommending it.

Do the root by itself. Don't patch the exploit, as that's what appears to break the camera. I believe there's an option to undo the patch.

Simple easy to follow took less than 5 minutes... as opposed to my htc inspire 4g which was a pain in the ass! Before you root anything ask whats the design goal..identify the risks and BACKUP everything and make sure you know how to restore it! Lots of incredibly talented folks here it's ok to not know what your doing but not ok to not know who to ask before bulling ahead and making an expensive mistake!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but people say to backup your device before you root. I thought that making nandroid or titanium backups required root... So how does one restore to an unrooted device without first rooting?

I've never done any sort of backups prior to rooting any phones in the last 3 yrs. Everything u need to unroot are available online.

Probably not before rooting. Using the Exynos Abuse apk, you will root in 5 seconds. It will put Super user on your phone and you can get Titanium Backup and then backup all user and system apps to your SD card etc. You can then debloat apps etc. You should probably uninstall the app with TB and keep it for a few days to make sure your phones works properly before deleting the app. Before flashing a ROM you should always backup incase something goes wrong you have something to flash back to.
On Friday (1/6) I opened my freshly purchased pixel XL and was happy to see it was still on 7.1. Given the status of many of the how to threads for the XL (Op not fully updated), I struggled to unlock the bootloader. I left the SIM card in and activated the phone. I even punched in my wifi password and got to the "checking for updates screen" before I started to read everything. I eventually got through it an unlocked the bootloader, slapped TWRP on it and flashed root. So far so good...
Then I started to read through the pain of updating manually to 7.1.1. No thanks. Kind of annoyed, I went about my merry way and just decided I'd hassle through it when something really important mandated it.
Fast forward to today, I noticed a bunch of apps had updated over night and something just seemed odd. So I checked the phone build number and it was updated to 7.1.1. Horrified, I installed quickboot and rebooted to recovery without issue, including SuperSU providing it root....whew!
My question - How did I get the OTA without losing TWRP and root? From what I've read, if you side load the OTA updates, you have to flash it again. I'm on the latest TWRP (RC1) and I've updated SuperSU binaries the easy way.
EDIT- By the way, this is the Verizon version (can't beat $15/m no trade in).
Because sideloading an OTA is a different update. You took the incremental OTA, which is a lot smaller and doesn't include installing to partitions that will break root. When you sideload the OTA, it's a "full OTA" and includes much more.
I would strongly suggest you disable automatic system updates and only manually update from here on out. It's far more risky taking incremental OTA's while rooted and modified than sideloading an OTA yourself when you can control it and flash everything you need to not bootloop.
Consider yourself lucky that you took it and didn't bootloop. But you are even more lucky that you got a 7.1 from Verizon! Nice.

I bought the verizon version a while back, unlocked the bootloader. Here is the thing now, when you unlock the bootloader, you'll be good. You can download the google factory images, and flash your phone to the latest version, then you can reflash twrp and super su again. You'll not use the ability to add TWRP everytime because restoring or flashing the images, vendor, even stock recovery does not lock the bootloader. You can also have a custom rom for a piece of mind flashed, I am currently on pure-nexus, which is great and stable for me. I understand if you want to stay fully stock. Did I make any sense to you?

Exactly. It doesn't get much easier than double clicking a flashall.bat.

I guess I'm just used to downloading a rom and gapps on my phone, clicking reboot to recovery, wipe/flash/wipe (or just dirty flash). Involving a PC, downloading the latest twrp, supersu, rom and whatever the tool of the day, is a pain comparatively...not to mention having to read pages and pages of threads because the OP isn't up to date and one step that is buried is critical. I understand this may come across as ungrateful. It isn't meant that way. I appreciate the many thankless hours people are putting into this. But from a user point of view, jumping through the hoops and risking bricking a $800 phone because the steps aren't short and simple, doesn't have the same value as when it is easy.

It will change. This phone is very different, it's not as open during the boot process as it used to be. Going to take some time to pull it all together. You won't brick it. You may soft brick it but a factory image and flashall.bat will pretty much always save you.

The Pixels are a little trickier than Nexus devices of the past in terms of flashing stuff, but you'd almost have to TRY to brick the phone. As long as you keep your bootloader always unlocked, you will always have a way to restore it.
In the future, if you keep your stock recovery, you can sideload OTA's through ADB by downloading the OTA from the Google site, and then using adb sideload ota.zip inside recovery with sideload selected. Alternatively, you can download the entire factory image for the new version, use Notepad to edit the flash-all.bat to remove "-w" from the file - it's in the middle of a flash command - and it will prevent it from wiping your device. But it will wipe out all your system modifications, if you made any.
I hit a "no command" recovery bootloop once when I tried manually updating, and didn't think I'd be able to get out of it because even flash-all.bat was not working (insufficient space error) for no good reason, and no article online has the proper new manual fastboot flash commands for Nougat devices using seamless updates. I think I know the commands now, but the SkipSoft Unified Toolkit is a GREAT tool (simplifies a lot of modification processes for a lot of devices) and automatically flashed the entire factory image for me, fixing the device.

Updating this phone is easy as hell. You sound like someone who isn't willing to put in the effort to learn how to properly do this stuff. Using fastboot is extremely easy. To sit there and say jump through hoops is ridiculous. You won't brick you're 800$ device if you know what you're doing. And there's plenty of guides out there on how to use fastboot that a complete noob can understand. This stuff isnt meant to be short and simple. Don't modify you're device if you don't want to learn how to properly do it.

Nice troll or you didn't read and understand what I wrote. Maybe typing it again will help you, the "noob" at comprehension. Looking at your username, I'm probably wasting my time though.
It's not easy compared to download, wipe, flash, wipe. Are you really questioning this?
The guides on XDA are riddled with one off steps buried pages into the thread. I know people are working on this in their spare time so updating a guide is grunt work compared to coding and compiling. But for someone who just got the phone and can't even set it up for fear of losing the ability to unlock their bootloader without reading every page of every thread, it's a bit much.
Did anyone make me do any of this? Of course not. But thanks for your permission to not do it going forward.
To everyone else who replied in this thread respectfully, thank you.

Troll? Seriously? Because you're a lazy user who doesn't want to put in the time and effort to properly mod you're device. Can't wait to see you're thread about help I'm soft bricked and don't know what to do. I only wanted you to take the time to learn everything so you don't mess up you're phone. But apparently you think it's too much of a pain. Enjoy you're future bricked phone.
Sadly this is what it's like on many xda threads.
One must read hundreds or in many cases thousands of posts to find out what could have been summed up on the op's original message with a simple 1-10 steps.
And if you call anyone out on it you get the backlash that you received in this thread. It's just the way it is here. Some nice helpful folks and many that just look for a fight.
This thread turned into a mess. All anyone with a Verizon model needs to know is that if you are on 7.1 you can unlock your bootloader. If you are already on 7.1.1 you can't unlock your bootloader and likely will never be able to.
Once you unlocked it you have nothing to worry about. It will ONLY get locked again if you yourself lock it via fastboot with the appropriate command. If you are not rooted and do not have twrp installed you will still get OTA notifications and be able to install just like you normally would. Your bootloader being unlocked has nothing to do with OTA updates.
I do agree with the previous post though. There's no denying that the pixel is different so things aren't as simple and we have some extra steps in order to keep root and twrp and also install updates. To whoever responded to him saying he was lazy is just looking for drama. Ignore it

First off why don't you read before you make a post like this. Nothing bad or disrespectful was posted. The other person was simply talking about the pixel being more complicated then other devices and stuff like that. It was no indication of him being too lazy to read threads. Then your "boy" felt the need to comment and start useless drama twisting the other guys words. You sit here and say "this is why I left XDA" yet you are the one who just went out of your way to continue the pointless drama that started because neither you nor your friend can read. YOU and YOUR post are the reason people get fed up with this place. You are contributing to drama your friend started on a forum for a device you clearly don't even own. Didn't you say you left XDA? So why are you posting here? I'm sure you're "mad skills" would be more useful somewhere else. Seriously grow up and at least read and know the story before you comment.
