My cousin rooted my galaxy s3 a year ago, everytime i turned my phone on after the samsung logo it showed a hot power logo, then after a while i decided to unroot my s3 by myself i dont think it worked as the hot power logo still shows and i cant update my software it says my phone has been modified, but when i check root checker it says my phone is not rooted?, i can not open superuser or framaroot so im totally baffleded iv been trying too look all over the internet and cant find anything thats like what im stuck with
.
Please could you help me if you can,
Thank you very much in advance
Do you have Superuser installed (not sure if root checker works with or without SU)? Also, do you still have a custom recovery (TWRP, CWM, etc.)?
If not, try installing it from the market and see if you still have root. The boot image didn't get replaced with the stock one when you unrooted.
The best way to set your phone back to a stock unrooted (with counter reset) IF you are not running 4.3 following the instructions in billard412 thread linked below:

Hi all
I unlocked and rooted my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) phone months ago and recently have struck a very weird prob. I had been swapping ROMs for a while, when recently the phone bricked on a ROM switch and would not go past the loading part of any rom I tried. I used RootKit to flash it back to the manf. Rom and that seems to have worked. The problem is though that my phone can not update (to manufacturer jellybean update, It starts but then hits red triangle android) or even flash clockwork recovery image. Every time i try any Recovery installer it just freezes up and says the app is not responding. Additionally though I have rooted and unlocked the phone and have superuser app, root checker tells me my phone is not rooted.
Please help
Thank You
1) stop using toolkits. you have no idea what it is doing, and sounds like it didnt really root your phone
2) return your phone to stock with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
3) root your phone with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529058
I am on a samsung galaxy s3 t-999 and i have tried to root it and have no luck i have followed a video and i have made it up to everything and got my phone into a "modified" state but now i am up to a part where you put the phone in recovery mode and try to install CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip and try to choose the package to install and it shows up as a "E:signature verification failed" it looked like the person in the video had a completely different menu in recovery mode so i guess that was my first red flag to getting my hopes up but if anyone knows how to get past this and completely get the S3 rooted i would be sincerely thankful

Its easier just to odin a rooted version of the factory image.
You can find it at the link on the bottom. Just flash the latest JB or ICS root66. If you use ICS, it wont trip your counter. Rooting you way will, so be sure to use triangle away from the playstore to reset your flash counter. Heres the link

ok guys, I have successfully been able to root every device I have ever had thanks to the great work and directions of people on this site. Trust me when I say I have searched and searched for the answer to this and I can not find it.
I have a Note 10.1 2014 P605 international version. All I am trying to do is root this device. I would also like Kit Kat 4.2.2 however not required.
At this point, I am able to flash TWRP and can go back and forth from JB and KK, however I for the life of me can't flash any other thing on this device. I have tried multiple downloads of the CF Auto Root, but I get the same thing every time. I go into Odin, process starts, screen flashes, and than goes into boot loop, and stays there until i rerun Odin, and flash stock back on. I have tried to flash a custom reom on this device also but same thing.
I don't care about tripping the KNOX counter, i just want the device rooted, plane and simple. I am starting to think its not the file, but there is a block on the device somewhere and i have missed it. It seems to let me run any stock rom, just nothing else.
I have gotten Supersu but it stops when it gets to the last part and says that i just updated and need to bascly come here for help!
I'm kind of at a loss here. Not sure what to do next. Any ideas? or links that I have missed??

If you only want root, have you tried Towelroot? I was able to root my P605V when no other method worked. The only issue I have (since I have a locked bootloader) is that I can't update my SU binaries in the ROM or via recovery (since it's stock). You likely won't have that issue since you have custom recovery and can just flash.
ok- so after another night of sleep, i was able to get this done - here's what I did -
Reflashed stock rom via ODIN
Flashed TWRP via ODIN
installed SuperSU onto simcard, installed via TWRP
SuperSU opens and tries to shut down KNOX, stalls
I reboot, rerun SuperSU, and again tries to shut down KNOX, but this time it works
I reflash Kit Kat 4.2 and repeat the process and whoop there it is...root access with stock Kit Kat.
Finally!
Hope this helps someone!

a few weeks ago I wanted to get the 4.4.3 update on my M8 but being rooted and missing apps I couldn't, so I found the developer edition rom and flashed the rom then flashed the firmware.
the thing is I have had root access ever since with out the need to use SuperUser, a little concerned any APK could access the phone and make a Mess I downloaded chainfires SU from google store, it immediately told me I needed to up date the SU binary, I cancelled and backed out but the phone rebooted and factory reset as if it was trying to update the SU via recovery.
eventually the phone rebooted and guess what, I am now missing the same APK files as before.
is it possible that it is the superuser apk causing the loss of the other apks and not the rooting process?
I am now going to have to reflash the ROM when I get home, how ever this morning before work I wanted to flash it, but when I used "FastBoot Boot Trecvoery.img" (touch recovery) the phone just hung and did not boot into recovery, stock recovery, longer shows the usual htc phone and red triangle logo, instead it just shows a white screen with htc written in grey
the phone works fine, but how do I get the ROM to reflash if I cant boot into custom recovery, I do not want to flash custom recovery as I prefer stock everything until my warranty expires.
am I going to have to S-off and start again?
I recently tried to initialize the firmware of my galaxy s3 running 4.4.2 to factory settings. But samsung Kies tried to install 4.1 into my phone and it bricked my device. It wasn't booting since then. So i tried to install something using odin according to a website and my phone started working properly. But now the issue is, when the phone is in download mode, it shows that the current binary is custom, the System status is Custom and the warranty bit is 1(in red color). I tried installing an app from google pay to check whether its rooted. and it says the phone is not rooted. Also i checked the phone by putting it in recovery mode, and it says its running android system recovey <3e>. So that seems fine too. But im confused why the phone is showing that the current binary is custom and also the system status is also custom while the phone is not rooted? Ive included a before (pic with three fail messages) and after screnshot of the download mode of my phone. Please help
Flashing non-stock software via Odin will cause this.
To reset everything, it is best to root, run triangle away, remove root. and it may go back to official.
The status may remain at custom since AT&T never released a full 4.4.2 ROM as KK was only available via OTA.
