Hey guys,
My friend spilled grand marnier on phone and now my power button doesn't work. I'm on a ROM that doesn't have screen wake by volume buttons, but is there a mod to put this in, or an app to use instead? I'm afraid to flash without a working power button and my wife's upgrade is in march so I'll have to tough it out till she gets her new phone and I take my incredible back. Thanks to anyone with any suggestions. I greatly appreciate it.

Something similar happened to me when it rained and the phone got drenched. The safest route is to use a hair dryer near the power button wait for it to dry out from the inside then try again. The contact button in the power strip doesn't work when wet.

Yeah I was going to but grand mariner is really syrupy and I think that's the major problem. This has been a problem for the past couple weeks, and been getting progressively worse. Now it won't work at all. Thanks though for the suggestion.

Try cleaning the contact off with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol

Changing Rom's can also be an option.
But you can also try using many apps to turn screen on or off by touching screen or waving hand over proximity sensor.
Eg.
I use:
PGM aka touch control:
Wake screen up with double tap or swipe up like BB10.
Screen off:
Program pie button to turn off screen.
Thank you both for your suggestions. I will try both of them.

send it to mobiletechvideos.com - they will fix it.
Or flash SearchAsPowerButton MOD along with Volume wake ROM - my ROM ICS supports it.
Wondering if anybody knows any places in Canada (GTA) where they might replace these? Sending it in to the states is a little expensive when considering shipping. =(
Yeah I have some issues with mine. It'll sometimes not lock the phone and it'll register as being held down instead. It's not too serious for me, though.

Use the volume button to unlock the phone. I am doing the same.

Just open up your phone and clean the dip switch with some rubbing alcohol, not to much but do it a couple of times. Make sure to let it dry before you turn it back on.
This fixed mine.

That worked for me as well. When I bought my phone, the power button was so sensitive that even the slightest amount of pressure on it would cause it to boot or turn the screen off. I was going to return the phone, but a few minutes work with alcohol and a Q-tip saved me the hassle.
Cleaning my button worked for me, but that was 3 months ago and now its back to not working. Worst part is that my volume buttons arent feeling to healthy either! Hopefully it holds on until upgrade time .
Don't be a p**** take your phone apart dab your button with some electronics cleaner and press the button a few hundred times and repeat and then put it back together.

If you guys are going to be opening the phone again at some point, it would be a great idea to take a couple of picture.
I think that my cappy is about to have the same issue (sometimes it doesn't recognize the power button) and it would be nice to have some king of guide to do the cleaning.
Try to clean around and inside or open it up and clean the power button, if that doesn't work you should just get a new phone. The captivate is already really old
do u think it can be solved by an upgrade

Yes, if you upgrade the phone, the new one comes with a new power button - problem solved!
Just use the rom that have option to wake the phone up by the volume rocker buttons. Also make sure to get screen off app to lock the phone up.
I opened my cappy and cleaned the button with contact cleaner, and now it works like new.

Hey now, some of us still like to keep our phones maintained until we do get a new phone
Or.... can't afford a new phone every 2 years... 199.99 isn't cheap (or 700 for unlocked and off contract)
Just Send It To Me

Hi there. Before update to JB on my S3, when i do my readings on the phone, screen blackout, press the HOME button, the screen will come back up.
Now, screen blackout, press HOME button, screen come back up but the app or browser that I'm using will close down instead of just led the screen on (where the app still there)
Anyone has a way to fix this? Keep pressing on the POWER button to light up the screen is not as Convenient as by using the HOME button.
Thank you.

Glad it's not just me. This has been driving me bonkers ever since I updated. It's really the only complaint I have about the official 4.1.1. ROM right now. Would love to hear some suggestions on how to fix. In the meantime, I've been trying to train myself to use the side power button for screen on action.
Is there anyway that we can make suggestions on this matter?
It bugs me when I read on the bed at night.

this has been happening on jelly bean ROMs (not cm tho) ever since the leas came out - at least for me anyways. very irritating sometimes but yes, you are not the only one.
Bump. No one else is annoyed by this but us or has any idea for a fix?
Only 'fix' is to use smart stay when theres enough light. Otherwise increase your screen on time to one min. I had to increase my time since I use it at night so often.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
An easy fix is just to use your power button as soon as the screen blacks out.
It wakes the screen back up without closing down the current app your in... I just tested it out and it works, doesn't lock the phone either.
But if you don't wanna use the power button then I suggest you increase your screen time out to one minute or more if you don't want the screen blacking out fast.

Does it work in the dark when reading in bed like the OP asked? My comment was criticism of why they coded it this way,for what purpose?

Its really just doing what its supposed to before the device locks. I guess they expected smart stay to take care of it.
If you keep double press home to open svoice enabled it should also stop this from happening.

Bingo. This is the answer. I'd much rather have the slight lag in returning to the home screen than lose the ability to turn the screen back on with the home key. Thanks!
My volume down button isn't working. I got my phone very slightly wet yesterday and also pressed the volume button with a slightly we're hand, which I think is the culprit. Anything I can try to fix this? Should/Could I open up my nexus and fix it? Thankfully on android you can grab the volume when you change it

Do you have enough knowledge to fix it? http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+Nexus+Teardown/7182/1
This might help you, so you can see the internals.
Since it is water damage, have you tried the rice trick?
I haven't tried the rice thing partly because I don't have rice. With the disassembly, I think I can handle it. I've done stuff like that before so I may try it later tonight.
My button works when I press a bit hard also so it may just be out of place.
Thanks.

I have a clicky home button. It kinda is like a two stage button. Its very clicky and not soft and smooth like the power button and volume buttons. If I were to describe the sound it almost sounds like there is a little piece of sand stuck under the button and every time you press it, the button hits it. How would I go about fixing this? I bought the phone off craigslist so could I just go into the T-Mobile store and get a replacement? Or is there a way to fix it? Any help would be AWESOME

No it is not smart ass. I've had other Samsung devices with the same button. It is not how its supposed to sound. And it does not happen every time I press it. Usually on the left or right side it does

In my opinion the build quality is inconsistent. I've bought 3 of them and one had a defective power button (i.e., recessed slightly and difficult to press). If you think something is wrong with your home key go to the store and compare to their demo phones. If there is a real problem with your phone they will tell you your options for getting warranty service.

I just checked 3 different m919s, they all make a click sound on the home key. the power button is mushy and quiet on all 3, and the volume buttons are just in between if you can hear beyond the beeping.
if you're sure something has creeped in there, have you tried taking some dust off to your phone?

How can it be the same button on a DIFFERENT Samsung device?
SOS!!!!!!!!
My girlfriend S4 has the same problem but my S4 is fine. I guess there's no fix.
I've got a little home button sticker on mine that came with my Spigen case. Doesn't really make much of a click.
Had this on my 2nd one. Its like the button kinda gets stuck a bit then it clicks. It just started doing it. My 3rd replacement is fine. Hopefully it stays that way.

All right. I just received a Samsung Galaxy S2 T-Mobile (White) from a friend.
It doesn't boot up to the Stock Android. It's not rooted it's completely stock.
When you start it up it just goes to the Samsung Logo Screen then into a Samsung Android 4G screen in which the loading bar gets a lil over halfway and it just turns off and restarts the process. I'm not sure whether it's the power button issue i've been seeing in the past. Or if it's something wrong with the motherboard power button area.
I am also providing a video I recorded just to see what happens when I put the battery inside an then press the power button.
I was wondering if anyone could give me any things to try to fix it or a possible solution as I would like to fix this issue and root the phone.
http://youtu.be/Ud4bb12gARw
Youtube of putting battery in and powering up.. An how the boot goes.
Is it constantly vibrating in your hand as it reboots? If so then most likely it's the power button
You could try circling around the power button with a pin. Blow it out then hit it with an eraser (or any large rubber item). That worked for me,
