Sorry if the question has been asked before but I just got my s3 on Monday and rooted it the other day. My question is if I want to check for updates is there away I can do a temp unroot to check? I know when I had a different android if it was rooted I couldn't use system update because the root took that out. Wondering if its the same for this phone as well.

There is a app called OTA RootKepper that is designed to allow you to take an OTA update and preserve root. I have not used it but only hear good things about it.
I used this method to get the LI3 update on my rootes stock LG8.
The newer versions of superuser and supersu have this built in as well
Or you could just flash a rom based on the update, or just the kernel, or just the modem/baseband. No need to unroot just to download an OTA.
Samsung Galaxy S3
OdexedBlue ROM
LI3 Stock Kernel
LIF Baseband

I ended up buying OTA Rootkeeper to save root in order to update, worked great.
So even if my phone is rooted i will still be able to get OTA update notification?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Yes. Even if you are rooted your phone may check for and download the ota update (unless you disable the checking out are running a Rom that has removed the checking).

With SuperSU, even unchecking the enable super user box I still get the message that my device has been modified and so I can't get updates.
Hello everyone i wa wondering how can i remove cwm recovery from my phone? i want my phone to be clean! and i wanna have an ota update to JB first so after i can root!
Via ODIN but why? By the time you get the OTA there will be a custom ROM to flash... unless you are one of the lucky few to get it on the day of release.
Make sure to restore your stock recovery as well.

how via odin? and also actually on redmondpie there is a app/mod that gets you the updates literally minutes after the ota update appears so yeah please explain how to remove via odin???
Search next time please

I do have one question though if I root my phone will I still get ota updates?
No you will not receive ota updates rooted. Unrooting is pretty easy though and someone usually turns the update into a flashable zip.

Flash with stock firmware for your phone model, or kernel only, if you have stock rom with cwm

is the flashable zip the exact! same thing as the ota update? does it come with touchwiz and all same features as ota update?
So i rooted my phone a few months back but im still stock, im on 4.0.4 and because if been rooted, i've skipped two updates. What can i do to make the update go through? i still wanna be stock but i know this update jellybean, which i want.
I've read having root blocks the update. There's a rooted version of the stock update in the dev section you can install.

So what's it called, I've been away from the scene for a long while.
All you need to do is download kies and under one of the menus is an option to emergency stock recovery this will take you to both the latest version and restore your phone to completely stock

Is it okay if I update if I'm rooted and is there any reason not to?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
If you update with kies you will loose your root. You will hate to root it again.
Also, if you have a custom recovery the update will set the stock recovery.
But for the update, the multi windows is nice but not all app are compatible.
That's why I went to a custom rom with unlimited multi window.

So ota ill keep root? I also read the update caused weird battery life
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I don't know for ota because my status was modified and I was not able to get the update. I had a custom recovery, that's why.
For the battery life, I can't help you for this. I kept this rom for about one day and now I run the international "custom" rom with unlimited multi window.

I'm kinda lost what ROM your phone is at right now... Sounds like you are on 4.3 with CWM recovery, if I read right. But like I said I got lost
If on 4.3, flash the stock recovery

i317-cwm-ucubmk6-recovery.zip
Or
You could just flash this via ODIN and remove root

Right now it's on the stock touch wiz that came with the phone so I should just flash the stock recovery and everything should be right

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
And if I do flash the second one can u help me through the steps on what to click and will it all so install the stock recovery
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If you truly on stock 4.3 with only custom recovery then flash the stock recovery.
The second one is full stock with only root. Root can be uninstalled. But until the update comes out don't think we're going to really know what state phone needs to be in.
