Possibly silly question... - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

So I am getting tired of carrying around 2 devices. I enjoy carrying my tablet for reading etc but still have to carry a phone. What I want to do is get an LTE tablet (Hopefully the note 10.1 2014) and use it as both. I would just take the sim card out of my phone and put it into the tablet and use a bluetooth headset to make calls. Is this possible after doing some modifications or due to hardware issues would it never actually work?

Not quite what you want, but have you seen the app called tablet talk? still needs a phone though...

Depends what country you're in, US has a bad habit of crippling the phone (dialler) so it can't be used as a phone. I'm in Oz (Australia) and my tablet works fine as a phone...

Did this with my old Note 10.1 when I broke my Note phone.
Was working as expected.
But die more comfort calling and seeing who is calling I would suggest a smart watch like the gear.
As headset I am using the Jaybird Bluebuds X little bigger than standard in ear stereo headset but with 8 HOURS runtime listening to stereo music. Charging time 1-2 h

Yes I live in the US and nope not interest in tablet talk. Hoping to be able to leave the phone at home all together.
An option I was throwing around would be using Google voice to handle the calls and texts.... Just unsure if i would have the data for it since I am in the phone quite a bit. Using the tablet to make regular gsm calls would be best...

My p605m model has the dialer build in. I'm running stock firmware. I can make calls as in a phone.

Thank you for the response but just looking over which bands it uses I don't think I could use the lte data in the US. Would kill part of the niceness of having an LTE tab when the media starts coming in slowly.

[Q] Anyone return their RAZR for the Galaxy Nexus?

Hi just wondering if anyone has returned their RAZR to VZW today for the Galaxy Nexus? I bought the RAZR almost 2 weeks ago, I really like it, but I'm having ICS envy.
i did and i could not be happier. the software advancement in ics is better than any gingerbread phone. it's jus more cohesive
My Nexus while at first seemed great actually has a few issues that are making me second guess my decision to return my Razr.
1. When switching from Wifi to 3g/4g my data stops working. I have to switch to airplane mode then back to restore it.
2. The speaker phone is aweful. While in the car its completley useless. I spend half of my conversation repeating myself becuase the other person can't hear me. I did a comparison with my wife Incredible and it was night and day.
3. When typing on the keyboard I notice that they keys being registered are not the keys I am pressing. Not all the time but on average its worse than the razr. The upside of this is that the autocorrection of ICS fixes the mistakes so its a wash in the end but still annoying.
4. MTP file transfer fail often when transfering files. I ended up using a wifi ftp server to get my titanium backup files.
5. Audio breaks up when trying to stream over bluetooth. Worked flawlessly on my Razr.
The last two are not so much bugs as design limitations.
6. No SD slot...I mean really... why can't nexus phones have sd cards.
7. No voice search button with the rest of the "buttons"

1. Can be resolved by a future update via radio upgrade.
2. Volume+ to have this fixed, can be resolved by a future update.
4. MTP is not limited to the Galaxy Nexus. This is a new standard within Ice Cream Sandwich. If you go on other phones and flash a CM9 kang featuring ICS... it will have MTP as well. Honeycomb tablets are already using MTP, and it can be helpful when a device has a internal and external sdcard. It keeps things more organized. So regardless if you go back to your RAZR, and it gets a upgrade to ICS (several months from now), it'll be MTP.
I returned my Razr about 2 weeks after it was released, then got my gnex yesterday
Convinced a buddy of mine to return his razr for a nexus and he is glad he did.

Has anyone notice any overheating issues? The store unit seemed to really warm up with only 15min of my use. The salesman said it was most like because of the demo software running.

I have not tried Volume+ but the issue is with the mic, not the speaker volume. Does Volume+ resolve that?
I respectfully disagree about the MTP issue. MTP is not a ICS standard. Its only present on devices without sd cards like the Xoom. When ICS is released for other devices they will support mass storage mode.

No overheating... its a very good device. Is it worth switching from the razr? No! The is two differences between this and the razr, bigger, much nicer screen and 4.02. I wanted to use gwallet and nfc badly but its onlh available on sprint. Rediculous.... if u have a razr keep your money, this isnt that big of an upgrade. Besides, razr will get 4.0 soon enough..

Gnex has way better things than just that. Fact that it will always be supported by google(@least until hardware can't be supported) razr will most likely last 1-2 big updates. Gnex has a 720p screen, you can add google wallet with a hack(you can't normally b/c of VZW). To other people the switch will be worth it. And easy unlockable boot loaders Just my opinion.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
I bought my RAZR the day it hit the store and just took it back for the GN. I wanted the Nexus for the ability to unlock the bootloader. I love flashing Rom's [already have the Revolution HD flashed].
It does have some lag right now but in the coming weeks devs will sort out bugs and get this running better, but it runs fine as is.
Happy with my decision.
I did. Had Razr 11 days and I am much happier with the Nexus.

Hard to say because first thing I did was root so i could install titanium backups. I havnt loaded any mods though. Just root.
No. But I AM thinking about cancelling my amazonwireless GN order and getting the razr instead because moto droids have always been awesome about incorporating the whole bluetooth stack and featuresets unlike nexus. people like me with Ford sync or BMW idrive dont get their text messages displayed on the dash touchscreen or read out loud to them by the car. we have to pick up the phone and futz with it instead.
Had the RAZR for a few days... best Android phone I have used until I exchanged for the Nexus. Don't miss it at all.
I had the RAZR first. Now I have the Gnex and although I prefer the unlocked bootloader and great ROM support, I am putting my Gnex up for sale Sunday on Craigslist and eBay. I bought a boatload of stuff for it too [ two extended batteries, two screen protectors, TPU case and car dock] that will be going with it.
I want the RAZR back. The build quality is far better IMHO. The Motorola antenna is far superior as well as the camera and removable storage. This is all just my humble opinion but I am selling my Gnex to go back to the RAZR.

[Q] What should I buy?: Galaxy Nexus/Nexus 7 or Asus Padfone?

Padfone or G-Nexus-7 combination
I've been using a SIM-free (unlocked and rooted) Motorola Atrix 4G with the lapdock everyday as my "daily-driver" phone/laptop solution since April of last year. I used the webtop, and later on, a modded version of Gentoo with Google Docs and Libre Office to get things done. I work at a university, so if I need something other than regular office software, I just use one of the hundreds of workstations I have access to on our campuses-- I've never experienced the so-called limitations that the lapdock+phone combo presents, and the fact that I ride very crowded trains in Tokyo precludes me from bringing my $1500+ laptop around everyday.
So when the Asus Padfone came out, I was sure that this would be my upgrade path! A phone that goes into a tablet that clips onto a keyboard. Brilliant! But hang on-- now there's the Nexus 7... Pure Google, and OPEN... That plus a Galaxy-Nexus... hmmmmm.... Could that also do the trick??
Well, there's always "let's wait and see a few more months..." But the obvious happened a week ago-- my Atrix's screen gave up the ghost... Sure I can plug it into HDMI, and use the lapdock just fine, but I can't use it as a phone... GRRRR!! Oh, and check out my location to the left-- I live in JAPAN, but I travel a lot, and go back to the US every year; actually, I'm going home in a week for a month!! So I NEED a phone either just before I go, or when I get there....
REQUIREMENTS:
- SIM Free (unlocked): I travel. A lot. Internationally. I needs my unlock!
- Multi-band support: Japan uses 2100MHz for HSPA+, and so does most of Asia. The US is 850, 1900, 1700... I'd like to find a phone that supports both of these... The Padfone will only support the Asian frequency, but nothing in the States-- I'd be stuck on 2G back home for a month... I can tolerate that though because I'll at least have AT&T hotspot support. The G-Nexus of course has a PENTABAND 3G radio (why the F don't other phones <other than the iPhone> have this same radio?!) so it'll work with whatever network I throw at it.
- Open bootloader/Rooted: One of the things I really enjoyed about my Atrix was being able to tweak tweak tweak. The Nexus devices don't need an explanation here-- They're designed to root and tweak. The Padfone can be rooted now--but it's bootloader is locked... But with the exotic tweaks made to get the tablet and phone UI to work, I doubt I'd use a custom ROM anyhow.
- Tablet/Phone combo: I got spoiled by my Atrix. Being able to use a physical keyboard to respond to an incoming text message is really habit-forming. Especially if I need to type it in Japanese. Of course the Padfone would win here... Not sure if there's an app that lets you see the text and MMSs on a phone through a tablet though. The other obvious thing here is that the Padphone *IS* the tablet, once docked into the PadStation. No tethering, no separate data plan, no hotspot needed. The G-Nexus-7 combo would see me tethering the G-Nex to the Nex-7. Is there a simple app that can make an on-demand data connection between the two happen at will?
- Updates: This is what pissed me off about Motorola. The OG Atrix's Tegra 2 processor can more than handle ICS, but here it is almost 6 months later, and nothing. Luckily I can get Kang builds, but certain things just don't work for me--for example Chrome crashes ALL the time. Camera sucks, etc. Hence, I'm over using another Moto device. Obviously the Nexus duo will ALWAYS get the latest and greatest; no-brainer there. Asus? The TF series got their updates to ICS within the first 3 months IIRC. Since Jelly Bean is just a point update, perhaps the Padfone will see an update in the fall sometime--I can live with that.
- Ease of use: Not the OS, but the physical pieces... The G-Nex-7 combo is easy in the way that both are able to use the same charger (micro USB). Padfone just nests together. I like how the Padfone keyboard has USB ports and an SD card slot... Not to mentin BATTERIES galore. It's hard as hell trying to find a place to charge my phone all the time, and sometimes I'd just use the Moto's lapdock as a battery charger!
- Price: this is the kicker... The Galaxy Nexus/ Nexus 7 Combo will come out to less than US$600 when bought from the Google store. Even buying from a grey-market distributor in Taiwan, I can't buy the Padfone/PadStation/Keyboard combo for less that US$1000... I have barely that much to spend though.
Friends, I need some help deciding! Here are my pros and cons for each device as it stands today. I'm posting this in the Padfone, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and my old Motorola Atrix forums as well. I want some good honest and thoughtful opinions-- no haterism, flaming, or retardedness please. This is an extremely important purchase for me, and needs to be done ASAP.
As always, thank you so much for your opinions!
$200 for the N7 + $350 for the GNex is way better than the almost a thousand for the Pad phone with tablet dock + keyboard dock. (You can buy a laptop with the difference) The main advantage of the Padfone is the monster battery and you don't need to carry 2 devices, but everything else is just "meh"
Review from the Verge:
The PadFone nails the idea, but misses on the execution to the point where it feels more like a tech demo than a viable product. There are enough performance issues and app interface problems that I began to avoid using the PadFone as a tablet, and even the phone itself has some underwhelming specs for a supposedly high-end device. I want badly to be able to ditch my laptop, set up a dock at work and a tablet at home, and just carry my phone everywhere knowing I can get done whatever needs doing. The PadFone hints that we're not far from that day, but proves conclusively that it's not here yet.

In the end though, it's really up to you. If you miss the all-in-one option of the Atrix, maybe it's worth it. If you can live without it, GNex + N7 is the best option
The gnexus or the nexus 7 should be the best option . Although it might not be the perfect solution for your requirements.

True, I've seen this too. thanx.
So what are some ways I can make the tablet/phone combo a "cohesive" solution? For example, someone showed me a way to use SMS on the tablet via a software link to the phone... (of course I also use Google Voice in the US too, so there's that)
But what about being able to tether the two together? Not by a hotspot, but some sort of "on-demand" tethering? For example, I'd rather use the big screen of the tablet when navigating maps, but there's no cellular connection. Is there an app that would have the two connected via low-power bluetooth all the time, then when the tablet needs an internet connection to do something, it can send a signal to the phone and create a hot-spot (or since these are 2 jellybean devices, wifi-direct link) on demand?
For $1000 the Asus parade is a no go. For $600 it would probably be a nice experiment. For $600 I am sure the nexus x2 would inconveniently meet your needs and wants and somebody will come out with a phone/tablet case combo to wirelessly tether the nexus combo into an interchangeable video/keyboard combo. Would be cool for the geek factor too. Is it a keyboard or a monitor. You decide. :what:
butter and jelly please...
^^ Now that would be impressive ^^
I could just "make" this happen actually- All I'd need is a smallish keyboard... hmmm....

I love this dilemmas. I have had the Droid Bionic, HTC phone and Motorola phones and I have never been happier than with my Galaxy Nexus. Stock is the way to go. The Nexus 7 is a tablet and not a phone though. So if your looking for a phone. I would say, go with the Galaxy Nexus. There is a reason Apple is trying to stop Google from selling it.

bash me all you want, but android tablet apps suck and that's all that matters.
I would say the Gnex/Nexus 7.
The dev community on the Nexus devices is just insane. Plus, because it is a nexus device, it gets updates the fastest. Also, seeing this : http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/6/3064317/asus-padfone-review , I honestly wouldn't get a padfone.
No bashing here man. That's a valid setup too. As long as I can tether to the G-nex for data out in the wild, that's all that matters. G-nex seems the best to meet your requirement. You can always tether it to either your Nex-7 or iPad2 depending upon which one meets you needs (app wise).
I am using G-nex on SBM and wi-fi only iPad2. The G-nex is almost always in hotspot mode. Ofcourse you might want to invest 2-3k yen in a good external battery.
^^Ahh, a fellow Softbank user who doesn't use a Softbank phone!^^
I know if I get the G-nex, I'd be getting the 3800mAh battery as well from Seidio. What external battery do you recommend? Of course we live in the land of Akihabara, Yodobashi Camera, and more-- but this Zagg Sparq seems like the ticket to me... Can charge both tablet and phone at the same time, and it's only $50 right now too! Hmm...
Since you're doing the same thing I want to do, what is your experience like with battery and speeds? Also have you been able to use Softbank's WiFi spots with the iPad?

I can't comment on the seido battery but I have had great experience on my Verizon nexus on the oem extended 2100 battery. Perhaps you would be fine with the Samsung 2000 hspa+ battery. I have found after market batteries to be very hit or miss. Another great thing about the OEM extended battery is it doesn't really make the phone any thicker and it feels good in the hand. I actually prefer the feel over the stock battery.

Ok, so after I got this phone on launch I enjoyed using it alot, everything was good but since it was the international version and I have t mobile my data speeds were too slow. Than the T Mobile version came out and I sold the international version and got this one.
Now this is a perfect phone for me. But since its so powerful and get almost all the things I need done on daily basis with ease, my question is, if I get rid of mt tab and laptop and just do all things on this device you think it will burn out. Will it be able to hold strong for a good year?
I do alot of emails, video watching, skyping, gaming, right now I have been doing all those things off this phone and havent touched my tab or laptop.

Due to my situation I did exactly that with my Droid X. My Droid X lasted the fully 2 years and more using it as my main and mostly only computer. My Droid X is still going strong. So I believe that Galaxy Note 2 can do the same. But with all computers they will show age sooner or later.
But yes, I believe Galaxy Note 2 can last as a main computing device for a year or two.
Titanium Backup shows 770 apps in my Galaxy Note 2 . I use it daily for most computing usage. The only thing I need is Microsoft Office (Word) for customized text boxes that I use sometimes within documents. And without a physical keyboard, word processing can be a pain. So laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can come in handy with that. But otherwise Galaxy Note 2 is a nice daily computer device. Still a laptop or a tablet with optional physical keyboard can sometimes come in handy.
You can also turn your Galaxy Note 2 into a desktop type computer too. Adding wireless mouse/keyboard, large monitor, etc. Shows how far these PPC (Pocket Personal Computer) devices and Android OS have come. But still as room to grow.

I have been using it non stop so I could understand but it's always a good idea to keep your laptop imho.
It will definitely last a year without any problems. The only thing that seems to go after about a year or so is the battery so eventually you will need to get that replaced. Other than that it should be fine. But a backup device is always a good idea!

Thanks for the response guys. So I guess what I will do is buy a smart dock, sell my laptop and desktop n keep my monitor keyboard and mouse for smart dock, and make N2 my main computing device.
I'll keep my N7 for just incase moments. this will be fun, i love this phone.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus as dedicated GPS

I have a Sprint Galaxy Nexus that is no longer in use. I was thinking on using it as a dedicated GPS. I have CoPilot USA Premium for the offline maps. Any thoughts on this? I haven't set it up yet, but I thought this would be a great way to keep using an older device. Also, I was thinking on loading it with a ton of music and using it with my car stereo over bluetooth.
Any thoughts?
Only issue is battery life sucks when GPS/BT are active and brightness is Max, so you'll definitely need a 12v charger.
Once I start my car my GN automatically starts streaming all the music/calls via BT stereo.
Also use the stock windshield mount very rarely for GPS since I find it easier to just Google it(using maps+street view) before leaving this way I'm actually learning the route for future trips in that area.
Have even used it as a dash cam but then quickly realized I don't want a record of my driving habits.
LOL
That sounds just like what I want to use mine for. Is your phone still active on a plan or is it disconnected?

Still on the same plan for the past couple of years:
$25/month unlimited talk/text/data(use 5-6gb/month).
Don't even have/need home phone line or cable internet.
Use work internet/PC to get all larger content via teamviewer remote PC app and Fongo VoIP or Skype app for long distance calls.
I'm having a hard time getting the GPS to actually work on the phone. If it won't work I have a nexus 5 I can use. I was hoping to use the GN since it was just collecting dust.

I'm a Note 4 owner, bought a XXX but returned to the Note 4

So this is for Note 4 owners like me who decided to try another device, but ultimately return to the Note 4. Somewhere to rant.
My weakness was a Nexus 6. The monster arrived yesterday but after less than 24 hours it's back in the box for return BIB4R. Too big, unwieldy, slower than Note 4 at loading apps, screen not as bright, camera produced circa 2013 quality pictures. Not a winner.

i did same mistake.... i gave it a month but wen back to my note 4
I had the nexus 6 prior to getting the note 4. I liked the device I didn't have lag issues but the battery is terrible. I'm moving on from the note 4 to the LG G4. I feel crippled without root. I don't see the AT&T SM-N910A getting permanent root anytime soon.

I keep looking at the G4. Actually I think it has a great screen too. There were ebay deals for 499 last week. Quite compelling.

I played with the S6 edge and liked it. Bright and sharp screen. Snappy too. Sticking to my Note 4 because I enjoy watching movies on my gear vr. Plus the battery life.

I keep looking at the 6 and thinking of jumping from the note to it. This thing is so locked down, it drives me nuts and I am getting tired of it.

I got mine for that price. G4 H815. I think the G4 battery is close to or equal of the note 4 as well. Not to mention perm root with greenify would be nice to have again. My brother in law has the G3 and loves it. Supposed to be here Monday and I'll set it up and I already listed my note 4 for sale which won't end until after I get the G4. I was hesitant to come back to samsung. If I did I should have got the unlocked model. I'm buying all my phones that way from now on.
The international G4 is a six core 3 gb phone. They always get the power house compared to the US models.

Ive done this a few times and biggest issue for me has been the following.
I use my phone heavily for work. I do at least 4-6hours of conference calls a day on it as I mainly work from home. For the business folks on the forum you know most of these conference calls are standard 800 number followed by a pin. Example would be like 888-123-1234 pin/passcode 1234567#. Coming from blackberry days (about 5yrs ago) this was a great feature on the BB that you could format the number correct and the BB could dial the 800 number first, then wait and auto dial the passcode or wait for you to hit a button to auto dial it. Example being say if you formatted the number correct on the location field as 888-123-1234;1234567 or even 888-123-1234x1234567# or 888-123-1234,,1234567# it would work just fine. Even iPhone works on this now.
I find it extremely painful and mindboggling that only (from what I can tell) Samsung has this feature off their native calendar. IF you use say have google calendar, it doesn't work. So that being said, when I went to a OnePlus same issue, it would piss me off that I had to remember the entire number before dialing.
I don't get why this is such a hard feature to implement across the board on android. Same issue with LG, Sony, etc. Ive tried those, every time, those been deal breakers for me.

Will look at this more but tried it briefly, didn't work well. I get people who put the conf call in multiple different formats, some use X as the split between the 888 number and the conf passcode, some spell it out like CONFERENCE CODE: 1234567. Some do it a different way.
Be nice is android in general just follows the same concept iphone and BB do and just look for values in the location field and if its in a few different formats it knows how to handle it from a dialing perspective.

I don't have a Note 4 but did have S4... and for these types of numbers where you have to enter pin, you just save the number in contacts followed by "p", which tells the dialer to pause after dialing the first set of numbers. So you'd enter something like 888-444-5555p123456. Once the phone dials in and it's time for you to enter the pin, then there's an option on the dialer to send out the remaining numbers which is the pin. Try that. Hope it works for ya.
Back in winter 2013, I had a note 3. I liked the note series, but I always wanted something different. Had a coworker tell me of the nexus 6 coming out, and I was all aflutter. Finally, another 6" phone. Well, I got my preorder in, and it finally came in the mail. Yay, a new phone, and a new GUI to learn and have fun with. I kept that phone for 2 days. Thankfully, I sold it on Craigslist to someone who really wanted it, and it allowed me to pay off the ATT payment plan. I think I lost a net of 5 dollars on it, between the case and the phone. I went to the Note 4 at that point. The 4 is an impressive phone. Definitely a bigger upgrade than from the 2 to the 3. I felt like I wasted money on that one. I could have kept the note 2 for a long time, it was a great phone.
I currently have the Note 4. My wife has the G4 and I have to say I'm pretty enamored with that phone if only for the cameras. Samsung needs to realize that selfies are a thing and these sh*tty front facing cameras are ridiculous.

Got the Note 4 when it released. Then got the Nexus 6 in March, sold the Nexus about a week later. Just got a Sony Xperia Z3 last week so we'll see how long that one lasts ?

Ended up switching to the nexus 6. Don't think I will be switching back to the note 4. The nexus 6 is just smoother and opens apps faster than the note. I have been messing around with both of them for a couple days now and haven't found a reason to go back to the note.

My main question for you is why would you decide to switch to the nexus 6 right now? I was faced with the same choice as you in october when both the note 4 and nexus 6 were new. I went with the note 4 for the s pen, screen, camera, better battery life and removable battery/ sd card. However, nexus did have lollipop at the time. But Android M is just around the corner and surely google will release a new nexus along with it. Why not just keep the note (which has lollipop, although the att one doesn't have 5.1) and wait until whatever Google calls the next nexus?

I just couldn't deal with the performance lag of the note 4 any more or the lack of root. Plus I want to unload the note before the note 5 comes out and the prices for the 4 drop. And I got the Nexus for free so I didn't have anything to lose by trying it out. Now I am glad I did.
I've had the Note 1-3, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Oneplus One. I've played with the S6 edge at best buy. That thing was snappy and build was great. But I don't think I could live with the battery life.
Love the Note 4. Great camera, battery life, ir blaster, I actually use the spen at work to jot down notes, great 2k display, I have the gear vr and I enjoy using it for movies. I've manage to reduce lag by disabling the bloat, animations off except transitions set to .5. Going into every app and making sure sync and error reports are off. Stock everything. Ram usually sits around 2 gb.
