I started this for several reasons.
1) For those who have deleted some system/app(s) & want to manually restore to get ready for the KK ota.
2) /persist dilemma. It is only on our phone yet both recoveries allow you to format it but do not back it up!!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48941876&postcount=2061
3) /firmware Also not backed up. Both recoveries format it. But Rsd lite will restore it.
I put some very obscure folders here & they may never be needed! DO NOT GO & restore these just because I attached them! If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Get the full zip here http://batakang.com/ftp/?dir=devs/mhous33/XT907/98.30.1
It is the largest one there!
You can extract even a single system/app with Explorer free & paste it with es file to get OTA ready
But some /partitions are only on the phone. Some are created on boot
1 folder not ANYWHERE BUT ON YOUR PHONE is /persist.
Persist permissions are here

Some wonder why Vzw does not want us rooting?
/Firmware is in the xml/fxz.
/System/app
/Vendor
/Firmware
/System/media.... stock boot animation/Dst animation.
Use Rom Manager fix perms for now. It has never failed me. Set them to all. Then run RM>fix permissions & reboot.
Permissions & ownership need to be set before use.
Rom Manager fix permissions is one good reason to have that app even if it did not WORK on our M, but it does.
Updated op.
So apps from "Data/App" can be deleted and still get the OTA, just don't delete apps from "System/App", is that correct?

2 things
1)You don't want to "delete" data apps & no need to root to uninstall them. Settings, apps, downloaded, select.... 2)Also the ones you mention sound like system apps?
I deleted them from the Data/App, so they would not be in my app drawer. And all of my system apps are still there, just looked.
Didn't think about disabling them, I got root happy, been to long without it, lol.

Rooted using Unrevoked. Have Root Explorer installed and Titanium. I know the system apps are in the folder: System/Apps When using Root Explorer I don't have the options. To uninstall the apps bit I can delete them. However, after deleting them the programs are still there. Same thing happens when I try to do it with Titanium. Is there something I'm overlooking?
System Apps do not get installed/uninstalled. Deleting them is all you need to to. However, since it appears you are still running the stock ROM you need to make sure you delete the corresponding odex file too.
I only had the stock ROM for about a day before I rooted and installed a different ROM (which was deodexed). BUT, I recall reading that both files need to be deleted.
I suggest that instead of deleting the files place them in a backup folder just in case you might need them later on. As mentioned before you must move the APK and its associated ODEX file if it has one. Sprint applications tend to be updated so uninstall the updates then move the Sprint applications using the aforementioned method.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G. EVOke (v.) - Summon into action or bring into existence, often as if by magic.
so i have to move the sprint apk files and odex files (if applicable) before I can delete them? I already tried deleting them w/o backing them up or changing their location but they keep coming back!

Are you mounting the apps folder with "rw" privileges before deleting?
Yes, I am. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. I swear to god these ****ing apps come right back after I reboot the phone. I delete them with Titanium and/or Root Explorer and after a little while they pop up again. I have no idea what is going on. I rooted with Unrevoked 3.21...maybe something didn't go right?
I also can't get BusyBox to install which is a major pain in da ass because so many apps need it
Hi
So I am looking at blocking a number of websites - no, I don't really want to do this through app's as a mere uninstall can undo the blocks.
I've rooted my phone, I've given +rw mount to /system/ and I'm able to etc hosts under /system/etc/hosts just fine.
However, as soon as I reboot, the system restores the hosts file to it's original state and all my edits to that file are undone.
Is there anything I can do about this? Please be a bit more specific than just "flash the kernel", thanks.

any time i edit anything in system folders i copy it to sdcard do my edits then copy it back and make sure the permissions are set correct i think it rw-r--r-- reboot and it should be good to go... for some reason i cant edit them in that folder but moving it to edit then move it back works for me maybe it will work for you too...

I can edit it no probs. I do my changes, test them out and they all work OK.
As soon as I reboot, everything becomes undone. AFAIK this might be some kernel protection.
The system partition is write-protected.

Tried to remove the tmobile Carrier IQ from my device, last week. I used Solid explorer, to do it. This is the list:
/system/app
QXDM2SD.apk
QXDM2SD.odex
HtcResetNotify.apk
HtcResetNotify.odex
Htcloglevel.apk
Htcloglevel.odex
Smith.apk
Smith.odex
Udove.apk
Udove.odex
/system/priv-app
IQ-tmobile-release-signed.apk ???????
IQ-tmobile-release-signed.odex ???????
IQToggle.signed.apk
IQToggle.signed.odex
MyBreeze.apk
MyBreeze.odex
/system/lib
system/lib/libiq_service_tmobile_2.2.so
/data/data
com.carrieriq.tmobile
com.carrieriq.tmobile.IQToggle
The two questionable files above were slightly different, on my device. They read:
IQ-tmobile-release-unsigned.signed.apk
IQ-tmobile-release-unsigned.signed.odex
Against my better judgment, I continued to delete all of those files. Now, I can't even get past the banner on the home screen. It says, "Unfortunately, System Manager Application has stopped." I went to my bootloader and did a factory reset. Then, went to TWRP and did another factory reset and wiped the cache, dalvik & data. I used Firewater to unlock, root & S-OFF from KitKat Stock 4.4.2 and would prefer to keep it if possible. I had absolutely no problems with that version. The pictures are below.
As you can see, everything seems to be perfectly unaffected. I get calls, texts, voicemails, and every notification. It won't let me go beyond the home screen. If anyone can find KitKat 4.4.2 Stock Rom for Tmobile USA, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I am guessing you didn't do a backup before hand?

Actually, I did a Titanium & NAND backup. But I didn't keep a copy of the NAND, in the internal storage. I just got an OTG Adapter. Gonna see if I can push the NAND onto the internal storage. Hopefully, it'll work. If not, I could definitely use your expertise.
Well then, all you need to do is to unpack the nand backup on your PC, and find the missing files and using TRWP mount / as rw and push the files back to your phone.

So, how do I do that?
Take your backup. the files that end in .win000, win001, win002, etc are tar files. So the easiest way would be to get a 'tar' program (cygwin has one built into it), and looking at each file look (tar -vtf [filename] -> will list the contents of the archive) for your missing files. By using -xvf option you can extract the file(s) you need.
BTW: On my lollipop backup of my M8 phone I didn't see any file that "IQ" in the filename, so kitkat must be different than lollipop.

Hi all,
Something happened to my phone and I ended up having to wipe and re-flash everything. Long story short, I did have the Samsung email 5.0.0.00400 install with the new ROM but I accidentally deleted it via TI Backup. I tried re-installing a backed up version of 5.0.0.00200 but it will not install for some reason.
I've searched around and the most recent apk I could find is 3.3.something, which I have installed now, but I'd really like to get back to the newer version. I know I can re-flash the ROM, but I've done quite a bit of setup, restoring apps and widgets, etc. at this point and I'd hate to lose all that. Figured I'd ask here before going down that road.
Could someone please be kind and link me to a stock Samsung mail app apk for version 5.0 and above?
Thank you in advance!

Hey Aaron very much appreciated! :good::good:
Still a noob when it comes to some most of this stuff. In this case odex vs deodex. I see the 2 apk files as well as all the files in the lib folder. I'm assuming the apk files install as normal? What do I do with the lib files?
Thanks again for your help!

No problem.
If your rooted, you could try just copying the folders over to /system/app. The folder gets 0755 permission and the files get 0644 permission. And then they would be system files. This should work fine, as long as the permissions are set.
Or you could just try installing them regularly.
And Then if you want maybe use Ti Backup to make them system files.
Hope that helps

Yes I am rooted. So just to talk this out before I do anything... I've looked up how to set permissions for files and folders. I have ES File Explorer and understand I can change permissions with root explorer on. I've never done this before so just to make sure I have it correct...
I would copy both secEmail_K and SecExchange folders to the /system/app folder on the phone.
Using Root explorer I would set permissions as:
Folders: rwxr-xr-x
Files: rw-r--r--
Thanks again for your help and quick responses. One more question if you don't mind, just to help me understand permissions. If the files have no executable permissions for any of the 3 classes it would seem as though they wouldn't be able to run. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding however.

I think so, attached pic. Plus make sure owner and group are root.
This is right from my phone now. So all should be good. You might not even have to change it, they might be good before.

I'm rooted with latest Magisk but it's not possible to delete system apps by using root explorer, even when mounted R/W.
Is there a trick or do i have to use TWRP?

Only trick I know is to download Titanium Backup for Android and give it Magisk root approval.
Use it to delete apps.
Take note: I have destroyed several 100% stock Oreo setups by removing system apps. Have not narrowed it
down to which apps caused that. But be ready for it to never reboot followed by flashing the entire system again.
Hm, I don't understand why it's not possible to delete system apps or folders (in fact apk kan be deletetd, but folder not),
You can delete them in TWRP, but be careful on which apps you delete because as already mentioned in this thread, you can be stuck with an unbootable system.
I'm planning on creating a custom flashable zip for myself that removes certain apps, changes the font, and boot animation in one go; just to streamline the process after I factory reset & update every month.
I can delete the APK by using ROOT EXPLORER, but I'm not able to delete the folder of the app.
Strange, on all other devices that was never a problem
Just freeze what you dont want. What did you want to get rid of anyways?
