[Q] touch screen unresponsive help? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi, I just recently bought my nexus 7 about 2-3 weeks ago and suddenly the screen has become unresponsive. The lock button works and will lock and unlock and rotating the screen still works but I cannot unlock it or do anything involving touch. I've reboot at least 10 times and it doesn't do anything. I've never dropped it and I baby it. Is there anything I can do? Has this happened to anyone else?

Return it, no need to mess with it, shuls still be under store warranty for an even replacement

It's past the 15 day return date so that isn't an option so I'm going to need an attempt to fix sadly

I have read over the forum and it seems like a lot of people have some kind of touchscreen problems.

Yes, this is a VERY common problem (I went thru 3 before i gave up all with the same screen issues). I don't know why so many people are saying the screen issues are normal (my original Nexus 7 doesn't have any issues). The problem is apparently a grounding issue since it is completely eliminated when the USB cable is plugged in.

I'm sort of confused. I purchased my nexus 7 2013 in November and I've only had screen issues a few times but nothing too annoying (maybe it did not respond while selecting something). How do I know if my nexus has or will have the same issue? Is there any way to see when it was manufactured? Does it affect if I have installed a custom rom? Thanks in advance

This is the problem, people are OK with the screen not being responsive (that is a major problem) the original 7 has no issues with this, so obviously they know how to make a responsive screen.
To answer your question, If you plug your 2013 Nexus 7 in and it corrects the issue your tablet is in fact defective.

Over the last couple of days I'm having a lot of trouble with touch. If I lock and then unlock it it fixes it for a while.

Advice on tinted screens

I am having issues with my screen. I have a yellow tint on the complete left side which is driving me nuts. I have read online of people exchanging their phones up to 4 times and having similar issues with their current device. Is it even worth exchanging, or should I just be happy with what I have? I don't want to have a messed up screen, but I don't want to go through the process of exchanging the phone multiple times. I just rooted the phone, transferred files, etc.
If you guys could tell me how many times you exchanged or if it is even worth it, please let me know.

If it's noticeable enough that you really don't like it or comfortable with it, exchange it. My GNex has no problem with screens luckily.

Wait if you got it from eBay, do you have receipt? Samsung asked receipt for me when I needed to send it to Samsung.

I would say get it replaced b4 the return period ... because you'll be looking at the screen everytime you use the device and is it's main feature/selling point get it replaced , yes it's a hassle but you'll end up with a better phone with potentially no screen flaws =)

it seems like it's the screen panel itself that is having a issue. This happened to few other people too. Flashing custom kernel can't help that

Yes I have tried the trinity kernel. I used the dead pixel fixer and ran the colors over night and that helped a little bit. If you use the phone at 100% brightness all of the time that helps a little too.

Why do you have problems with yours too? I have talked to people with the GSM version and I don't know if they have different technology or what, but I have seen people switch out their phones up to 5 times with CDMA versions. If it gets any worse I'm gonna switch it out, but I honestly love this phone way more than any other Android. Screw Sense and TouchWiz.

Touchscreen stops responding for some while

Hello everyone,
I have a big problem with my HTC Vision. After I've carried it around a long time in my pocket pants the screen do not respond, only after I turn it on and off several times (2-3 times) i can unlock the screen. And then after unlocking the screen it takes about 5 seconds until the screen shows a strange behavior. e.g. for an entry with the on-screen keyboard several keys will be entered without touching the screen, or on the home screen the cursor moves somewhere and activated anything without touching.
This happens everytime i turn off the screen and turn it on some seconds later (maybe 20-30 seconds).
After about 15 minutes out of the pocket the behavior is normal again.
During this about 15 minutes a reboot wont help.
Please can someone help me thank you in advance.
I have the latest CM7.2 rooted on my device, but testet with several other roms.
Greetings Steffen
try to restore stock rom and drivers. If it doesn't help, give HTC for warranty.

The warranty is long gone.

Then best guess is it needs a new digitizer, next best guess is the main flex. I would be surprised if it weren't one of these two

Thanks for your suggestion, i also think that the digitizer may have a problem, yesterday i bought a screwdriver an repair set for the phone, and then i will open it for looking inside an maybe see something or for only clean it.
But another question, what is the main flex, i never heard about it in past.
Best regards Steffen
It is the cable that allows all components to be connected as you slide the keyboard

Hi Steyn,
Did you tried changing the digitizer. I am also facing some similar problem.

No I have not changed it yet, but I have my device completely disassembled down to the digitizer and thoroughly cleaned. But I've noticed no change.
I'm going to buy now, probably a new digitizer and replace the old.
I still remembered that I had such a problem already with the stock-ROM from HTC, just was not as strong and that is why I have not taken so seriously.
I will write my experiences then here in the forum.
Changing the digitizer fixed similar issues on my device.

Thank you for this information, that encouraged me in my decision to buy a new digitizer.

[ISSUE] Random Reboots

So, I've had my new N7 for a full day now and I have had about 5 random reboots that I have noticed. Anyone else getting this? Also my calendar app isn't syncing for some reason, get the sync error. Thinking a factory reset is already in order, but just wondering if I am the only one.

Mine kept doing this yesterday. Today, I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't boot up. Charging wouldn't even work! I didn't even unlock the bootloader or anything yet... Oh well, returned to Best Buy for now! At least they take it back NQA.

I experienced about 3 random reboots within a 3 hour window yesterday but throughout today its fine(NO REBOOTS AT ALL)
UPDATE- Just had a reboot while watching Netflix. I think this is an issue with the android 4.3 on the nexus 7(2013) and not the actual tablet itself

Well i believe you jinxed me because shortly after reading this I had a hard reboot. I attempted to dump a last kmsg but it is not enabled in the stock kernel. I also saw that after reboot my SwiftKey was all messed up. I am rooted and unlocked. I am wondering if the way that SU is integrated into the system is what is causing these issues.

I don't think root is the cause of these reboots. My nexus 7 has rebooted twice already and it is completely stock as I have only used it for 2 hours so far. I installed both updates too.

Bought a 32gb and a 16gb on Friday. My 32 has been flawless. My wife's 16 has been getting reboots quite often. Will probably return it. Just wondering if this is a 16gb problem or is it affecting both current models?
My 32gig havnt gotten any rrs since allday yesterday to now running good

I don't think this is a widespread issue yet. Something software wise was wonky. Battery drain was crazy, screen wasn't even showing up in the battery stats. New one has been flawless though. Crazy good battery and no reboots * knock on wood*

Thanks for the reply. Ya I am getting about an hour of screen on time per 10% battery drain. Battery exceeds expectations since it is a higher resolution screen, and a smaller battery compared to the previous generation. We found a office Max with one so we are just going to exchange the 16gb model and hope we don't get another wonky one.

Touch activity lacking

I'm noticing a problem w/ the touch screen. It's seeming weak lately. I put a ZAGG screen protector on my N7(2013). Going to flash and see if that's the problem. Anyone have any problems like this? I look like a moron sitting there tapping the screen just to type a "r".

Yea some do have some screen issues. Mine is like yours. Try plugging your table in via USB, which grounds it, and see if it goes away. If it does then it's a hardware, I think, issue. There are some fixes that can be tried found on XDA but I opted to use deal with it since it's minimal although still frustrating.

Thanks. I flashed. Seems to be writhing fine now. I have a two year warranty so I'm not worried about hardware. I'm on 4.4. I may fall back to 4.3 as a test too.

How many RMA's before you received a perfect Nexus 7?

I'm wondering how many RMA's it took for people to receive a good device.
I just did my first RMA and hoping I get lucky on this one. My device was constantly unresponsive to touches. Even after the factory reset on the phone with Google support, just trying to enter in my WiFi password it certain parts of the screen would become unresponsive. I couldn't type the letter 'n', then it was the letter 'y', etc. You either had to wait a bit and try again, or you had to power off the screen and power it back on.
Personally, I didn't do enough research before hand to realize this was a widespread issue. The Nexus 7 besides that issue has been the best tablet I've used so I'm hoping I can get a good one.
What has been your experience? I posted a poll, but feel free to add your experience below. Whether it be a touch issue or another issue, I'm looking at peoples success rate with RMA's.

Same for my Original Nexus 7..

None so far touchwood although have only had mine for about 3 weeks unlocked and rooted.
Mine is great. Best device ever, use it every day.

It has largely been fine, but the responsiveness you brought up...seems like I find myself having to tap the screen a second time more often than the 1st gen N7. It's not a huge issue at this point, but something I've noticed.
