Using this phone in the UK - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey Guys, I am going to the UK for 2 weeks next week and was wondering what were my options of using this phone over there. I heard you can buy a sim card for like 10 pounds to use for the duration. Any suggestions or anyone use this phone overseas before?

I have used my S3 overseas (Ireland) before and was amazed by how ridiculously cheap it was. You obviously must be unlocked. For example carrier Three uk has a prepaid option for £15 that gets you unlimited data, 300 minutes and 3000 texts. http://store.three.co.uk/view/searchSimOnly?tariff=112
O2 has similar but a bit more expensive. Sims there are usually free with a top up. Mine was €20 and after 3 weeks I left with 11€ left. And I use a LOT of data. Other notable carriers are Vodafone, Virgin. Check their websites an you will find awesome pre-paid sim only options.

Unlocked phones available NOW from Carphone warehouse pretending to be from t-mobile!

My "T-Mobile" phone from Carphone Warehouse actually came unlocked! I suspected as much when there was no T-Mobile labeling at all and the opening animation just said HTC. So, while I'm waiting for my number to transfer from o2 I decided to try and use my o2 SIM card. It works! and the network settings all changed automatically.
so... if you want one unlocked but don't mind starting up a contract and just want it moveable depending on what country you may be in at a given moment... buy from Carphone warehouse! (At least from their website)
J
How much are they charging in store?
Carphone Warehouse phones are always unlocked. One of their trademarks if you will (that they sell unlocked sim-free phones)
Unfortunately they are quite a lot more expensive than going direct to t-mobile, I was looking at £20pm + £129 for 600 minutes, CPW seem to be £20 for 300 minutes + £189 also internet uses your booster, from tmobile you get internet then use your booster for free landline calls etc. looks better to go to tmobile then pay them £15 to unlock?
It's so they can buy in bulk and offer the same phone with numerous providers.
plus £129 for the handset?!
Are you upgrading?
T-Mobile gave me 600 minutes, unlimited text, web n walk max and a free handset for £15 a month on an 18 month contract. Works out cheaper than buying the phone and plus I'm getting a monthly bill.
You guys need to argue for better deals! haha

Just picked up a Desire!

Wow hoo!
Only cost me £349.99 SIM FREE.
Can i have it for free please?

I got it from the 3 Store in town. They thought they weren't selling them PAYG yet but I knew they were as it was on the 3 Blog. They said they only had two and at this sort of stock level usually would keep them for contracts and they'd be getting more in Tuesday but the nice guy let me walk out with one!
At the moment, 3's Desire's are SIM free and unlocked, as confirmed on 3 Blog.
I've just got mine for 550$ in Switzerland, SIM free
I got mine for €179 on a 12 month plan.
Total cost is €450 -ish euro so technically I got it for less than the price of sim free AND got 12 months line rental

Just had a look at the 3 website - the HTC Desire is not available on PAYG there, I might have to get down to my local 3 store next week but I think you were lucky to get it at that price, unlocked too.....cheapest I've seen it is around £380
I got mine from 3 on thursday for 349.99 too.. 3 haven't advertised it on their website yet... plus not all their 3 store staff know about it.. i had to ring around over 10 stores before someone actually knew that it was being sold on payg
i work for 3 and the reason they say its not available on payg when you go into store is cause we only got 2 in on stock and we get more commission for selling it on a contract than we would payg. So all the stores telling you that you cant get it on payg are lying we have been able to sell it on payg from day of release
free here on t-mobile 100mins unlimited texts and internet 18 months £15pm

Galaxy Nexus locked?

many are selling their Galaxy Nexus saying waiting for lock code to unlock etc.. and others are saying its sim-free and unlocked
so who to believe? is it locked for those to took it on contract (o2 , orange , others) or its unlocked just tied up with the contract and can sell it easily to make quick cash?
thanks
Well Im in the UK and got the phone from Phones4u - tied to an Orange tarriff..... but I now have my T-Mobile SIM in it as ive got 6 weeks left before I can actually move my number to Orange.
Works fine
Some are locked. Some aren't.
It seems all O2 phones are locked. Some Three phones but not all of them and that the new contract phones4u are unlocked.
Either way I unlocked my O2 phone for £7 using eBay and it only took a few hours to get the code so it isn't tricky to unlock which is great for those in the US wanting to buy a phone as it would surely be cheaper to buy a locked phone and pay $15 on eBay for an unlock code.
So if have some friends in the UK who can get it for free due an upgrade or using the plan for their own i can make them happy paying them £400 cash per device and they use the service anyway and benefit some cash?
So who wanna be my friend for few devices?
wow no one? hehe i thought i'll be getting tons of PMs regarding the topic
seems i have no option but getting it over ebay overpriced :/

Probably because they wouldn't profit from it at all. If they buy them on contract they still end up paying at least the full price of the phone but as part of an increased monthly cost. When you then offer them £400 they probably end up about £100 out of pocket. Hardly a great deal for them.

Is the O2 PAYG phone network locked?

Hi Guys
I'm looking to buy one to use with my Three contract SIM, but really hate waiting for deliveries. I can pick up a PAYG handset from O2.. but does anybody know if these handsets would be network-locked? Or could I use my Three SIM with it?
Thanks
its unlocked, can be used on any network. i got mine from o2 and use it on three.
Unlocked mate. I purchased mine from O2 but I use a three SIM
Mine works on Vodafone too
Unlocked (I'm using my 3 SIM) like everyone else said BUT if you buy from an O2 brick and mortar store they'll make you buy a £15 SIM card. They did with me anyway.
Don't bother asking the staff in-store because they either flat-out lie and say it's locked or they just don't know.
Also bought mine from O2; have both the O2 and my usual Virgin SIM in the phone. Both work fine.
Only odd thing is that I asked for the 10£ SIM, but the computer at the store wouldn't accept it, so I had to accept a 15£ SIM. One-time purchase, and I got the device instantly though, so I took it. I don't think the OP5T is sold locked anywhere (don't quote me on this though).
Perfect, thanks everybody.. I did as you said and brought it direct from O2 and also had to get the £15 PAYG SIM.. but its only about £6 extra compared to buying direct (with their faster delivery).. and I got it the same day. Really impressed so far.

if u got it on o2 online you wouldn't have needed to pay a top up at all.

I thought that. You just have to select a pay as you go sim but it doesn't cost anything
If you have an O2 SIM or you can borrow one, you don't need to pay for the £15 top up in store either. Just take the SIM in with you (in a working phone) and they'll sell you the 5t as an upgrade. During the process they send two SMS messages to the existing O2 SIM a each of which contains a four digit number. You read those back to them and hey presto you get the new phone without buying the £15 top up. I've bought two this way now, both using the same number.

Very true, I was just trying to help the OP as they said they didn't like waiting around for deliveries This was the first phone I didn't order online for years! It was weird! Kinda cool too. I wish phone stores in the UK sold a wider range of Chinese phones at reasonable prices. I guess the phone networks wouldn't like that!

Dual SIM in the UK

I'm thinking of taking advantage of EEs black Friday offer (25gb a month for only £20) and buying another SIM. SIM 1
is with Vodafone.
Is anyone in the UK operating their mate 20x on a dual SIM basis? What has been your experience?

Ps virgin also offering 200gb for only £20 a month!!
I'm with 3uk Im on a sim only tarrif for £27 a month unlimited. Data, calls, texts and 20gb tethering. Even in months we're I download 250+gb I never notice my access being throttled and i never get any bills for going over my allowance as its all covered. Wouldn't that be Cheaper than using 2sims?
