[Q] Any kernels that support usb to ethernet? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I've heard that the 2012 Nexus 7 with Bricked kernel was able to use a microUSB to ethernet cable and therefore give you access to a wired connection. My question is whether there is a kernel that supports this same feature for the Nexus 7 2013? I know this is a pretty obscure feature but since I'm a student at a college that doesn't allow personal devices (only issued items) to connect to the wifi, I would like to use my tablet for something besides reading and offline gaming. Thanks for any help!

ICS USB DACs -- Is Anyone Working on This?

The audio company Fiio has been talking about creating a USB DAC that works specifically with ICS. Problem is, I've only ever read of vague support of the idea from Google and zero software suggesting this is even an option. Has anyone else tried to make this work and, if so, does it? Love to know what the gentleman who created Voodoo Control thinks about this.
If it ever did work, you might see a huge migration of audiophiles from the iPhone (which allows for limited DAC access to limited devices through the dock) to Android (which would allow access to budget USB DACs costing hundreds of dollars less).
I'd really like to know this too. The internal DAC in the SGSII sucks, and it doesn't even have any kind of unamplified line-out. If I could use an external DAC that would solve all (or at least most) of my audio issues with it.
There are some custom ROMs for some devices that are working with USB DACs. Nook color, Archos G9, Nexus 1 and maybe some other devices. There is some experimental USB DAC support in RedPill Kernell for SGS2 but I couldn't make it work with my SGS2+FIIO E10+USB powered HUB.
I have a chinese tablet, Ainol Novo 8 Adv and there are some ROMs that have the libraries needed, but there is no way to route android audio to the USB DAC. Alsa recognizes the DAC but nothing happens.
We should ask Google to implement it. Look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490151

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Desktop

Hello,
I am planning on using my Galaxy Nexus as my new Desktop computer.
I am planning to achieve this by buying a MHL to HDMI adaptor to display the visual output from my phone to my monitor. I will also be buying a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse.
My question is Does the Galaxy Nexus or ICS support two bluetooth devices being connect to it at once?
Thanks
Dan
I too would be interested in this.
Where is the best place to buy a MHL cable and...do they all have a charge feature.
P.S. There's a video on YouTube with this. But I'm not sure if he's using 2 peripherals or 1. Good question.
Cheers.

I just purchased one from
http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/ps...V21386?Ntt=mhl
But I think you have addressed my first issue, getting the phone to charge while its connected through the USB.
Maybe charge it via the 3pin pogo on the side...

No idea about the BT connectivity issue, in the worst case you could use 1 BT connection and for the other a USB OTG cable, if the Nex supports it.
The only problems you'll run into is if you need to perform any heavy tasks. MS Word won't run, any of the higher level Adobe software, etc... There are of course substitute mobile apps, but they're not nearly as powerful as the desktop apps. To understand this, try composing a Word document in a mobile app...it works for writing text, but you'll have to manually compose a Table of Contents. Another test would be Power Point, you can make simple slides but you won't be able to make anything complex. And I'm not sure there's even a mobile version of virtual machine software at all.
Good luck. They're noble ambitions. But I'm a coder and need a machine with at least 4GB RAM. I have to be able to compile code, run VMs, make complex documents etc...in a nutshell, it wouldn't work out for me.
I guess everybody's uses for a Desktop is different. I just want it to browse the web, watch youtube videos, watch the odd tv show and movies.
The processing power in the nexus is defiantly sufficient for what I need it for. Also with Kernels around I could overclock it up to 1.5Ghz but I just dont feel compfortable running my phone at 1.5Ghz. So I think 1.35Ghz would be sufficient and be as far as I push it.
Googles Docs can do any word processing or excel documents which I need when at home but will be rarely using this.
I just want to really use my phone on my tv and flick back and forward. Reply to texts, emails, web stuff. A good bt rollout keyboard and a small mouse would be probably sufficient.
That link didn't work for me. :-\ so the cable has a charge port on it?

[Q] Pairing PS3 controller without Sixaxis App

I started a thread about the use of a PS2 Controller with a USB OTG adapter but it seems like nobody is interested in it, so i drop it (the thread) and i just bought a PS3 Controller.
I connected it with a mini USB cable to my Nexus (trough the OTG cable) and works like a charm! But it could be better if i was able to use it wirelessly.
I know the Sixaxis App works great, but i really don't want to buy the app, at least not right now, because i cannot accept the fact that the PS2 controller didn't work, and then the PS3 BT controller either! Besides, i read a lot of posts where users confirms that the controller is working with the Asus Prime tablet without the need of Sixaxis or Root.
I'm using the stock 4.0.4 version without a custom kernel and i'm rooted.
Please, there's nothing against the developers of Sixaxis, it costs only U$1.58, but i cannot accept the fact that ICS could not pair the controller by itself or at least using a custom rom and/or kernel.
You can't accept that you might have to buy a $1.58 app to pair a device with a proprietary controller using proprietary communications protocols that most likely had to be reverse engineered to work on Android, just because Android doesn't include this functionality to begin with?
Oi,.
just buy the app... or you could buy a BT dongle but it would cost the same but less is needed with the app.

But how can you explain that the controller is working with the Transformer Prime without the app? As i said before, i have no problem at all with the purchase of the app, i just was looking a simpler way to pair the device, because i own a blog and i wanted to teach the regular user to pair their controllers.

simultaneous slimport and otg, not possible?

I know this is the nexus 7 section, but you guys have more slimport experience thus far. And I hope this isn't considered spamming as I have asked the same thing in the nexus 5 Q/A, but most likely this is a different group.
I had visions of building a dock that would connect the nexus 5 both to:
1. a monitor (or tv)
2. usb hub (allowing access to keyboard, mouse, ext hd, etc.)
my couple of hours of research is looking like this isn't possible, as there isn't a way to run slimport and otg hosting simultaneously. (at least my poking around the nexus 4 and nexus 7 forums has yet to bear fruit). in fact one slimport paper i found describes how pins 2, 3 and 4 would toggle between the two (usb otg and slimport). I'm not confident how such switching would be happening "on the fly".
anyone know of any "successful" threads I'm missing? or is the vision screwed from the go?
Thanks!
You can't do it, no. Slimport essentially takes over the USB hardware to stream video out instead.

[Q] Nexus 7 2013 as FULL Desktop Replacement

Hey guys,
a friend of mine is looking for a new notebook, but very happy with his (old) Nexus 7. I thought that it might be enough if he buys a bluetooth keyboard + mouse and Chromecast. Would this work to get a Full, on the TV Screen, desktop replacement? Or would it be smarter to get a new nexus 7 and use the MHL support to connect it with some screen + connect mouse and keyboard (via usb/bluetooth).
Anyways, is this even possible to connect a screen, a mouse and a keyboard at the same time on the new nexus/old nexus.
Cheers.

I believe chromcast works on wifi.
but Bluetooth will pair with only one device at a time. Keyboard or Mouse. Not both!
can use a wired keyboard with a bluetooth mouse though!

Bit if I use a wired keyboard and a bluetooth mouse I cant use the MHL for the screen support (nexus 2013 case) cause the slot is in use, or are there any adapters who support this?
*edit*
I did a little research on "just one bluetooth device"....and its wrong. Lots of sources say that they can connect 2 bluetooth devices. Can anybody confirm this?

I am sure it can be done. However, you can also buy bluetooth keyboard with mouse pad in built that will serve dual purpose. I have a logitech keyboard with built in mouse pad, and it works.
If you use bluetooth keyboard and mouse with chromecast or miracast technologies, you will see a lag between when you perform an action and when it gets displayed on the screen. I guess the wireless display technologies have this limitation.
You can't use MHL with new Nexus 7 2013. the technology is not supported.
What you need is a Slimport adapter to connect the new Nexus 7 2013 to the TV. I have used my bluetooth keyboard with built in mouse pad while my device was connected to Slimport. It works. My bluetooth keyboard was lagging, but i guess that's a known bluetooth issue with the new nexus 7s.
Don't buy MHL for the new Nexus 7 devices. It wont work.
Hope this helps.

Thank you mate, this sounds promising. You said the keyboard kinda laggs. Is it anyoing, or can you live with that problem?
The Slimport thingy wont work with the old nexus 7, right?
Is there a possibility to connect Slimport AND keyboard/mouse (wired) to the device?

I primarily use the mouse so I didn't do a full regression with the keyboard. But i remember it was lagging substantially which was a bummer for me. I saw the bluetooth issue being discussed here somewhere. I will try to find that thread and see there was a fix.

Not that I know of. The slimport connects directly to the N7. The only port you have available after that is for charging, that too within the slimport adapter itself. I am not aware of a slimport and keyboard/mouse wired to the device.

Hi,
I'm a newbie on xda forum and i got some questions before i decided to buy new nexus 7. I got no experiences with Android 4.0 and above versions, so i need a few informations about nexus and android. I already read a few things on multiple forums, including xda. Similar as OP, i would like to replace my laptop with nexus 7.
1. I read nexus 7 owners had problems with USB OTG and there is some application needed for this thing to work. I also read there is the difference between rooted and unrooted tablet. What do i get with rooted tablet? Some guys on local forum told me i will loose warranty if i root tablet. Is this true?
2. Again about OTG, is it possible to download torrents (especially big files over 10 GB, like HD movies) directly on USB or even on external HDD?
3. I read nexus supports MHL, but i have to buy Slimport adapter and not MHL adapter to have a picture on monitor or TV. Is this true? Is it possible to have TV, keyboard and mouse (and maybe even USB) connected at same time? If yes, what would i need? USB hub or anything like that?
Can anybody help me with my questions please?
Cheers
I busted out an old wireless mouse (USB dongle) and a bluetooth keyboard to see how well this would work, and it's surprisingly good. I've got a USB hub plugged in which recognizes flashdrives with StickMount. The only issue is that you won't be able to use the SlimPort and a flash drive/USB mouse at the same time.

root: Some of the more sophisticated apps you may want to use need root. I dont think you lose warenty since you can completely restore your tablet to factory settings if needed. But I am not sure about this. I just can say that the process of rooting is NO problem at all.
MHL: Some guy in THIS thread said that MHL is not supported. And he also said that with a slimport adapter you can use any screen as Nexus screen. Same for the keyboard question, I asked basically the same thing, just read the thread.
You can download torrents. Just make sure to get the 32GB version if you want to dowload big files. And you can also mount external usb devices like HDD. But again, if your MicroUSB (where to put the charger) is occupied by slimport adapter to get a picture on the screen, you wont be able to mount any other sub thing as far as explained in THIS thread.
