[Q] Nexus GSM problems, still have TWRP Recovery, but no OS - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a GSM Nexus Maguro, I can get into TWRP, but my phone will not boot into the OS thus my phone is soft bricked i take it. I was going to flash a ROM, but i ended up deleteing everything rather than factory reset. Like i said I can get into TWRP and see my files. How can I fix this to have my phone working the way it should?

Hi,
First of all, you should post this in Q&A or General rather than development section.
Then, don't worry. If you have adb & fastboot drivers on your PC, attach the USB cable between GNex and PC and "sideload" the ROM zip. You should read one of the stickies in General section or Google it, it should be explained already.
EDIT : Here you are, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317986

My bad, shoot me. Is the world going to end now?

Someone helps you and you come back with a smartass remark? Go read the stickies and learn how to do it yourself then, lazy ass.

lrn2search before posting a new thread. srsly it is not that hard, or at least go to Q&A, or browse around. I mean the thread you are looking for IS ON THE FIRST PAGE however you were right in the sense that the file is no longer hosted. if you had checked the stickies in this case the slide rom bible, the second post down mentions the champion build. If you are rooted which I am going to assume you are and you wish to return to stock the champion build will do that for you. here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713507 and if you want to update that go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746577
next time look for it yourself, and if after searching extensively you cant find what you are looking for first, read the stickies as they contain important reads and answer most questions right off the bat, and second go to Q&A if the stickies don't have what you are looking for.

yes i tried to follow those instructions i cant get my pc to detect my phone im not sure if its because im running cyangonmod
Wait what? as in adb wont see it? cyan0gen mod shouldn't be an issue, also how did you root/run cyan0gen if your pc cant see your phone? what OS is on your comp?
i used eugines method now ive tried to get my computer to read my phone in recovery and the booted into the o.s im running windows 7 ultimate
so it wont read it in recovery, did you unplug and replug it in? also what is your phone status? cyan or stock?
its cyan i need to get it back to stock. computer makes the sound notifying its plugged back in but cant find it when i type adb devices
Did you flash the engineering build? also why dont you go into clockwork, and then adb shell after mounting system and data?

Accidentally deleted rom HELP!!!

Using the Samsung toolkit I rooted my phone but remained stock. I installed rom toolbox and decided I wanted to try changing the system font. I installed it and rebooted the phone but it would not pass the Samsung logo so I decided to just hard reset. Messing around with twrp trying to to reset I hit wipe system and now when I go to reboot it says no os installed! I tried to go around it by installing the rom to the phone through the computer but my computer won't recognize my phone and neither will Odin. I'm stuck and I need help I can't even use my phone because it won't start :crying:
If you were using this tool you should be able to download a new AT&T rom and re-install from scratch.
This should be helpful to you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984717
Thanks I'll give it a try

The answer has been given on both this area and Q&A. Please don't post in more than one area. People will help you out. Whatever you do, don't panic. Just remember that as long as you can boot into TWRP and download mode, you are safe because your phone is not bricked beyond repair and there are multiple ways to get a ROM back. No guarantees on your data though (your external SD card should be fine though). Before you start messing around with much more, please read through various threads regarding what you are wanting to do so that you are prepared to do it correctly and you will have some idea of what to do should something go wrong.

did you get yourself straightened out? if you're still having issues with your PC not seeing your phone (and adb feels way over your head) go grab yourself a $10 micro sd card. they're real lifesavers. throw a ROM and gapps on there and you should be all set. you can backup to that sd card once you know you're all set to and you'll have a nandroid for emergencies too.
This is a easy fix. Boot into recovery mode. Mount your storage. Copy a rom from your pc to your phone. Flash away.

rom delete and phone wont turning on help me!!!!
hi guys!
yesterday i was updating my firmware or my smart phone INNJOO i1s, from its official site. i had started flashing it with FLASH TOOL it first format the rom then when i was to installed the rom there was error occurred then boomm... Rom crashed then i reboot my device and it was not starting. it was like a dead. its not charging now nor turning on. but when i connect it to computer, computer makes a connectivity sound, and installing and unknown device driver. Why it is happening? plz help me. I want to turn my phone again.
Never heard of flash tool. Do you have the i747 or i747m?

Help ! I think i bricked my GNex!

So, i wanted to do a FULL wipe, like delete /system /data /everything i can wipe with TWRP. It's not the first time i did this, but it's the first time i did this with TWRP. When i did it with CWR, i installed a factory imaged with Gnex Toolkit and everything went smooth.
But this time, i have problems with the drivers or something, because the Gnex Toolkit can't find my device, neither does Windows, i can only hear that beep sound when i connect my phone, and that's all. The only program that recognise my phone is ODIN, wich crashes when i hit start with the official .tgz image from Google. :crying:
Guys I really don't know what to do anymore, if any of you have any idea please help me, i need this fast. Ask for any other information you need.
Thanks in advance!:fingers-crossed:
I need to transfer a flashable rar with a custom ROM so i can flash it with TWRP. A friend of mine said something about adb push but he didn't know much so i still don't know how to solve this..
Use google or efrants guide thats stickied toolkit boy
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I find the problem. I was in Download mode not Fastboot when using Toolkit.. god i'm such an idiot ). Thanks anyway namtotbout.
Yes, you need .tar files, or .tar.md5 for odin. I think it's time you learn to do it with fastboot, then it's unlikely you'll need any help to recover from anything the phone can throw at you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895. And you can learn about adb push, which will work in a custom recovery.
thanks to you too bodh.. I used to know all of this but i sold my GNex ~6 months ago and didn;t used Android since then, so i forgot most of these.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus help

Hi,
I require advice as to how i should proceed with my recent purchase blunder.
Background: I required a cell since my current one started acting up with frequent call drops and shut downs. I scoured my local craiglist and got a used Galaxy Nexus for ~$ 100. The guy said it wasn't rooted, and so i proceeded to purchase, but only realised now that the cell is infact rooted, with ClockworkMod (not well versed with droid) and some functions / options do not work as intended. I want to unroot it and i tried to follow this guide, but it gets stuck at
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
saying waiting for device.
Not sure what to do as i'm fine even if i have to stay rooted, but i want the damn thing to work properly.
Also, if anyone can recommend how i go about installing ROM's
Regards,
Probably drivers. Just manually boot into bootloader.. And then flash the factory image.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Fastboot reboot-bootloader command will only work if you are already in the bootloader mode anyways...
As @mrgnex said, just do it manually, or use adb commands to boot into bootloader where THEN you use fastboot command.
To manually get into bootloader/fastboot mode; power down, then hold power button and volume up AND down all at same time for few seconds, it'll vibrate and you'll be in the bootloader mode where u can issue the fastboot commands.
Ok. I tried to put the .tgz file onto the cell and tried to install the file from there which is ~250mb. But when i try to select installing from s/d card, it does not show up the file there. I am most cretain i'm doing something wrong, and so would like to know what it is ? Any other guide that could be a little easy to follow ??
You don't actually move the factory images onto your phone.
One of the sticky threads here is called "return to stock". That should guide you in the right direction.

it's great that you're learning to do this Droid life has a good howto, just google "droidlife how to root galaxy nexus"
if worse comes to worse you can use this toolkit that does it for you, it's called wugfresh google "wugfresh nexus toolkit"
If you want to install ROMs you download the zip right on your device (make sure you get a ROM zip file AND a gapps zip file. They are linked in pretty much every OP for ROMs)
Downloading a ROM zip directly from/on device is easiest because then you do not have to transfer the file(s) over to your device in order to "flash"(aka install). Then all you do is go into recovery mode. Then go to install, then choose your ROM zip file. After that installs, then install gapps file the same way, always install gapps zip AFTER the rom zip.
If you use TWRP as your custom recovery you can "queue" your zip installs(choose rom zip and then you can choose to add another zip file and it will flash them both for ya)
And usually it is recommend to do a factory reset from recovery before you reboot into system. (Make sure to not wipe ALL /data...choose factory reset...wiping ALL /data will wipe /sdcard contents as well)
This all might seem foreign and difficult at first, but once you've done it once or twice(or more... you might become what we call a "crack flasher"-one who is constant changing ROM and kernel and setups lol, that's when it gets REALLY fun) so do not get discouraged. Especially if you don't understand the terminology we all use, you will become familiar with it quickly. And remember, Google is your best friend, almost any questions you might have will yield MANY helpful results when you put in a Google search, highly recommend that if using Google for trying to get useful info to put things like "how to install custom recovery "Galaxy Nexus" xda" to get the best info possible )
And do not be afraid to ask us either if you feel lost. It's easier to prevent an issue than to fix it(though fixing a borled Gnex is fairly easy with all the tools available here and elsewhere)
As for going back completely to stock, as mentioned above, to do that you aren't putting any files onto your device itself. You download them to PC(I use my laptop) and install from there using fastboot. When you download the factory img that is for your specific device and unzip it (I believe they still come compressed... If not ignore that part sorry!) You will see inside there is a script called "flash-all.sh" OR if using windows use the "flash-all.exe" that will automate the fastboot commands needed for a full factory stock restore of the device.
I could link you to posts containing useful how-tos and info and such, but right now I'm viewing forum via Tapatalk app on my device and really gonna be lazy and just say look at the "Sticky posts" in General, Q&A, and Development sections, those are most likely what I would link to you here.
After reading through some of those, if you need clarification of steps taken or something, come on back and let us know.

Maybe on contract for that price yes.
But for $100 no contract, that's not bad for a Gnex.. considering I paid ~400 just over 1.5yrs ago lol. And a highly developed device at that.
MAYBE could have found another device for a little bit more in the 150-200 range that was newer. But 100aint bad for a gnex

Tried and tried what? If you aren't specific in what you have done, what are we supposed to do, guess? Be detailed and be specific when asking for help.
You aren't in bad shape at all if you have recovery and can mount SD. Just put a software 1.x based ROM on the SD and flash it in TWRP.

Just use the XDA search function, and search "adb beginner" to find a number of good adb/fastboot tutorials aimed at just that, beginners.
But if you've used fastboot to install recovery, the other commands aren't any harder. Its just a matter of just knowing what commands to use for a given situation.
If you can mount SD, I don't even think you need adb. But its a very valuable tool to know, and can help in a lot of situations.
Thanks for the response, well i tried a stock rom im not sure where i went wrong tbh i put it on the internal sd and the file would not show up inTWRP i then had a back up and copied and pasted the files from the Stock rom into the back up and tried to install it and thats where it messed up i am crap at this kind of thing i rooted it no problem i thought unrooting would be easier, adb is a bit confusing with me if there was a way i could put a file onto my sd card in zip format and open it i just tried the original one i downloaded to get loads of red commmads saying

You sentence structure (or lack of it) is still making it hard to understand what you are trying to tell us. If you can't even be bothered to type a proper sentence; how do you expect us to take the time to help you? Honestly, most other requests for help on this forum get much more response. I think many folks are just walking away from this thread without helping, because they can't understand you due to your writing style.
Your lack of specificity also makes it crippling to try to help. What stock ROM, and where did you get it from?
If you got a stock nandroid, you then need to extract the files from the zip and place them in exactly the right folder, otherwise TWRP won't see it. And you do not use the TWRP "INSTALL" function with a stock nandroid, you use the "RESTORE" function.
A flashable ROM zip, in contrast to a nandroid, can be placed anywhere on internal storage or removable SD, and TWRP will see it and flash it using the INSTALL function.
Its very easy to push a ROM zip to the phone with adb. I already told you how to find BEGINNER tutorials on how to use adb. Don't expect to be spoonfed information that is already readily available on XDA. If you have a specific question regarding adb, ask it. Otherwise just saying "adb is confusing" is not going to help you.

Your firmware files aren't "corrupt". They are just outdated, and don't match the ROM your flashed.
OTAs are available for your version. An option if you don't want to s-off, is to return to stock ROM and recovery, and OTA to update the firmware. It seems you are having problems installing the stock nandroids, but I think you just need to properly follow the instructions from the stock nandroid collection thread.
Otherwise, you are stuck running ROMs that are based on 1.x software. Running anything more recent will result in long boot times and broken WiFI, as you've experienced.
Dammit i know excatly where i went wrong and what you meant by you have to open the file up and adb the right files to the right places............ $%$% i have now fully ruined the phone i think i turn it on i get a White screen the phone then goes full black screen and does nothing...... i have connected the phone via usb to the laptop, the laptop notices the phone and usb i click on the phone in my computer nothing is there when it opens i have also gone onto adb and done the "adb devices" and it does not show on the list, is there anything i can do with this now, i am very gratefull for the help even though i haven't been specific and guessed my way through alot of it like a nob,
adb only works when booted into OS or in recovery.
Alternately, if you have an SD card reader, use it to load a ROM zip onto the SD from your computer. Then place SD in the phone, boot TWRP, and flash the ROM.

@redpoint73: I'm in his exact same position...hopefully, I can communicate this a little better...at least I'll try. LOL
Background: Rooted, S-Off (via Sunshine), , TWRP 2.8.1.0, was running CleanROM (on the 444 firmware) and tried installing Vanir 444. I did a factory reset and I'm pretty sure I might have went into Advanced and wiped System as well (from the reading I've done, I shouldn't have done that) ROM installed no problem, Gapps installed no problem, installed SuperSU 2.40 at the end and rebooted. When the phone went to reboot, it went to the usual white HTC screen, then went black and never moved past that point.
As you advised in an earlier post, I held down Power/Vol up until the white HTC screen appears. I waited until the screen went black then held Vol down for several minutes but bootloader never came up.
My computer recognizes the phone when I plug it in, Windows explorer shows both "Internal" and "SD card", with Internal basically empty and SD card showing all my files. Since I can't get into bootloader, "adb devices" doesn't bring anything back.
Any suggestions you might have would be hugely appreciated - hoping to avoid having to head to a local Verizon store and see what they can do! If I missed any background or details, let me know and I'll elaborate.
TIA!

I can't imagine it being any worse than the previous guy!
Seriously though, your post would have been better served in its own thread, or almost any other relevant thread. Couple reasons for this:
1) My experience, when folks say they are "in the exact same position", "I have the same problem", etc. they are in fact virtually never the exact same condition. There are far too many variables (M8 variant, hboot version, software/firmware version, how you got to the current condition, and many more) for your condition to be "exactly the same". And for that matter, when folks say they have the "same problem" it in fact is most often a completely different cause, and different fix. Do yourself a favor, and don't say "me too" when posting a problem.
2) The OP basically chased everyone away with his horrible diction. Help threads in this section normally get considerable traffic and assistance. I'm the only one helping this guy, because apparently I'm the only one patient enough to try to decipher his ramblings. By attaching your post to his, you've pretty much cursed your issue to obscurity as well.

If you got this from a post of mine in another thread, its (normally) accompanied with the statement that failure to get into bootloader is virtually always a matter of user error (not getting the timing right). Simply stated, if the screen still comes on, you can get into bootloader. So just repeat the steps until the bootloader screen comes up. You either didn't start pressing vol down fast enough; or let go of it too early (don't let go until the bootloader screen appears).

Once you get the timing right to get into bootloader, and from there recovery, we should be in good shape.
You can likely recover by transferring a known good ROM to the SD card, and just flashing from custom recovery. Or just restore your nandroid.

I doubt Verizon can help. And since the phone was put into this situation by your own actions (mods you performed) its really your responsibility to fix it, not theirs.

Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate it. I was able to get it working (after dozens of attempts) and you're absolutely correct...it's all in the timing.
