I can't take it anymore - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I get homescreen redraws - constantly. I have tried removing every widget possible, changing every setting, and all the ''keep activities etc'' unchecked, keep homescreen in memory. I need help on this. It's driving me crazy. I've tried live wallpapers, regular wallpapers. I can't think of anything else.

Redraws drive everyone crazy.
But in order to help you, we need some details like Android version, root, ROM, kernel, launcher, total apps installed, free RAM..
If you haven't rooted your phone, I'd suggest you to do it and get rid of the unwanted apps.
If you have root, try changing kernels to find out the one that suits ur ROM.
Also, you can install Greenify to restrict background apps.

My guess is that you have so many apps running in the background and eating RAM that the launcher has to be cleared out of memory. Check your available RAM.

I am running Beanstalk, 4.2.2 build. I was using the kernel that came with the rom, which I guess CM based. I was using stock launcher but switched over to the KK Launcher. Not sure about free RAM as I flashed Mopang's kernel after I read both of your responses. According to System Panel, I don't have that much running in the background. Is there a better app to use to help manage that?
Looking at "apps" it shows I have about 270mbs of RAM.

Are you still getting launcher redraws with 270mb free RAM?
And do you mean 4.2.2 or 4.4.2?
A few suggestions would be to switch to a 4.4.2 ROM now that they are almost stable.
Else try some other launcher like Nova, or Apex.

I haven't had one yet since I have installed the other kernel... I am on 4.2.2. All the KK Roms I've tried have been really choppy and slow, or don't have all the features I like. I'm open to suggestions though. I am on the Sprint network. I will try another launcher if it keeps happening. I wish I had a more definitive idea of what is causing it. My girlfriend never has these problems and is using the same launcher has me. I set up most of her phone as well.

[Q] How to get best performance out of Defy?

Hey!
I have been rooted my Defy and overclockrd it to 1Ghz. And it feels good now
But the question is, is there still something that I could do to get even more better performance out of Defy?
And yes, I know that flashing CM7 makes it faster, but Im not gonna flash anything yet coz' I have no experience about flashing. And Im bit careful with my defy.
I really want to know how to get whole performance out of this awesome device
And gaming. I've heard about "chainfire3D", will it make 3D and HD games more smoothly and better gaming experience?
Thanks in advace!
install an Applauncher like ADW Launcher to optimize the Appdrawer.
Julian
As far as I know chainfire3D improves performance only in games which are designed for Tegra GPU. Don't worry about Flashing CM7, you can always downgrade to Froyo (Btw, if you have 2.1 to improve performance you can flash 2.2 in official way using Motorola Software Update). Defy is almost unbrickable so you cannot do anything wrong.

Which is better ADW or GO luncher?
Send from my MB525 motodefy.
IMO, Go Launcher Ex is better. It is smoother and does not lag at all! Furthermore, the App Drawer is really nice , you can make it look like iOS - you'll have these tiny x's above the apps if you drag and hold your finger on them if you want to delete them or move.
ADW launcher is good, its still smooth, but go launcher is faster.

I second that.
My first launcher was ADW. It's really nice launcher but sometimes it's laggy and consumes much more CPU. GO Launcher runs smooth with any transation/effect i choose and has some nice tools like recent and running app in app drawer.
I think if you don't feel comfortable using CM7, Chainfire 3D is a no go either, it's safer but still can screw your system
You can also use Titanium Backup to "freeze" some apps you don't frequently use that still consume resources
the best launcher is launcherpro imo. it uses 3g acceleration for the animations, so it runs way smoother than other launchers, and its incredibly fast! and in launcherpro, you have the opportunity to hide apps in the app drawer. but the first step in increasing performance would definitely be to update to a 2.2 kernel than flashing cm7 (i recommend the 110909 nightly)!

The Blur Launcher runs in background and i can't be killed (in stock roms).
You can use apps like Home Manager or Home Switcher to switch between launchers

I would guess you already have 2.2 stock. If not, you're missing an easy improvement.
I also thought I needed to learn more before trying CM7 so it took me quite a while to flash it. The only thing I can say now is that it makes me appreciate even more how much faster CM7 is than stock 2.2. I wish I had tried it before.
I'm still having some problems with wifi, but I just can't go back anymore, stock is just too slow.
As for a launcher, try Zeam Launcher, pretty quick.
+1 for the Zeam Launcher. App launchers are just that. They should consume a minimal amount of resource so that the applications that really matter have more room to play with.
If you have a stock rom, it is really quite possible to take out moto's home app. You need to be rooted (and of course, you need to be careful)
Regarding the question about not seeing the original home launcher, i think the easiest thing to do is to uninstall the 3rd party app launcher. If the original home app is still installed, you *should then be able to see it again on the foreground.
For original home launcher fix go to market and search for "moto home fix". Read it and install.
And when you want to go back on original launcher, go to settings-applications-manage applications and select your current launcher.
Then click "clear defaults" and press home button.
Menu for choosing launcher will promp.

Zeam launcher has the best performance, but lacks some features. Best Alternative is LauncherPro, in my opinion.

4.2.2 The bad

Well all things were fine on 4.2.1 and then this update comes,
This is what i noticed so far,
1.Phone is EXTREMELY laggy when downloading from play store
2.Browser quick controls are bugged
3.Lots of launcher crashes
4.Alarm icon in the notification disappears while it's still active
5.Random lag spikes while navigating in de drawer or homescreen,
As far as i go, this is the laggiest jelly bean version, maybe google just got lazy, or they're working on another version of Android (fingers crossed)
EDIT: I'm not talking about custom roms and such, and i'm not willing to flash, i like stock

Flash STOCK ANDROID JB 4.2.2 (I mean stock, and not CWM flashable stock ROMs with root..)
Use stock Android launcher (Just stock, not modded or anything else)
And then Stop complaining!
I'm on cm10.1 4.2.2 and is probably the smoothest ROM I have ever been on.

1. Use a custom kernel and tweak the read ahead buffer size. With sio io scheduler and 256k buffer size i made the lag minimal for me.
3+5 : use nova launcher and it will be fine
4: it works fine here, make sure you do clean installs.
As a last advice I must say to flash the factory image via fastboot. It is absolutely fine with no issues. I installed it on 2 gnex' already and no problems with lag.

Stock android is far away from perfect now. JDQ39 is nowhere near rock stable JZO54K. My friend. Scrolling lag is not the matter of clean installation. I've tested five 4.2.2 based roms, including stock all of them lags as hell after a while - it can be one or two days or couple of hours. Actually it's been the most evident of stock and it concerns scrolling between homescreens, lockscreens, recents. A lot of people have experienced it and it's been already reported to google issue tracker. I've already tested stock, cm10.1 m2, PA 3.1 0309, XenonHD 6.0 - all of them lags after a while. At the moment I am testing Purity and I haven's seen lag for two days.
Te easiest way to reproduce the bug. Please do not reboot your devices, and do not change wallpapers for about two days.
Same here, on CM10.1 Play Store is now smooth but was bad on XenonHD.

Well I don't understand where do you see the lags. Because I don't have any lags on my nexus.
The speed also depends what kernel you are using and how much free Memory you have on your nexus..
I'm using my own ROM which is based of stock Android ROM and I have actually never experienced any lags.
Yesterday I got few apps after using apple's BT mouse and when I set up multi users.. But all the lags went away when I rebooted.

How do I do this?
Not sure if this has been discussed or not I searched and found many bugs but none that meet this specific issue.. I noticed that since I updated to the 4.2.2 leak on my Toro Nexus there have been a few issues:
Audio from the pogo pin dock stopped working.
Car mode goes off and on randomly as well as the charging bolt when the phone should be charging.
Phone goes into daydream mode even when not being charged..
Turning on bluetooth randomly reboots the phone on occasion and other random bugs.
I think I'm going to flash back to the previous OTA. I'm stock unlocked, unrooted, just the way I like my Nexus (for now). In no way is this a complaint, more my observations and a last shot in the dark to see if anyone has overcome these issues in the latest leaked "OTA."
On a side note, other than the dock and power issues, everything has been smooth. No lag etc...

Ok so I realize I don't know how to do this without resetting all data. From what I've read, the only way back includes wiping all data. Am I wrong? Is there a way for me to go back without wiping? I'm not super versed in all things Android but I think I recall flashing back to a previous OTA in the past to get another OTA to work without wiping. I can't find that thread anywhere so I'm probably mistaken. Any help?
Edit: I re-read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895 and determined that it can be done without wiping for folks that aren't noobs. I consider myself a noob at this point so I'm stuck with this 4.2.2 update until I find an easier way.

It's the same as flashing a rom! Use Titanium backup to backup the apps, and custom recovery to wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. Format /system, /data, /cache , and downgrade with the toolkit w/o format when it ask. So for less than an hour you will downgrade, and keep music, videos and photos. So the only thing you lose is programs, but you can restore them whit titanium, and that is!

Lags what I am talking about is low fps scrolling that appears after some time of normal usage. I've never experienced it on 4.1.2 or 4.2.1. It has nothing to do with the kernel. (BTW aren't we talkin about the stock one?) Problem is still present on custom kernels and even OCed CPU. It looks rather like some sort of memory leak. Reboot or changing wallpaper is a workaround solution for this issue. So yeah if you reboot your device quite often you most probably won't see this bug.
If you want to read more about this issue visit this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178962
Except this bug I really like the 4.2.2 rom, these new features. I consider it as an improvement from 4.2.1.
I agree, 4.1.2 was polished more. 4.2.2 is better then the initial 4.2 release, but still has a way to go. We'll see what IO brings soon.

Are you using custom kernel?
And which apps are running in background? E.g. Currents, Google+. FB...
And if you use custom kernel then make sure you use CPU governor that doesn't make Android slower or laggier..
I have actually never had any lags on my Nexus, I use 100% stock kernel, sometimes CM's kernel. I have free memory 2,10 GB of 13 GB (16GB GNex)..
Also I recommend to use some cleaner apps to delete unnecessary files..
For cleaning a bit my Nexus I use "Mobile Care" on Windows it is "ASC"
Which deletes e.g. Cache and junk files..

[Q] Not enough ram

Hi, I'm running Smooth Rom and I'm experiencing a lot of apps that reload when I'm multitasking. Usually when i listen to music and using the browser it crashes. Which i think means there's not enough ram. Any tips to optimize ram usage?. Usually I only have 160 mb of free ram when running nothing. THX
Did you do a clean install?
Might also be helpful to wipe cache and dalvik cache

I'm having the same kind of problem with the related ROM GalaxySBean. Just sitting around (with only Apex Launcher running) I'm down to 90-100 Mb of RAM open. Can't read a book and listen to Pandora at the same time.
Any suggestions on unneeded system apps to freeze or ROMs that are better at handling resources (how is CM10.1/SGT7 [JB-4.2.2]?) would be much appreciated.
UPDATE: After rebooting and performing the suggested Cache clearings, I started with 142 Mb open and am now at 130 open without touching anything else. The meter in the "Running" apps in the settings area shows 272 MB in use, while RAM used by the apps listed there only totals about 78. That's about 200 MB of RAM in hidden processes.
You may want to try an app called Greenify which will stop those hidden processes if you would like. It only stops the ones that you want

Thanks. I appreciate the input. I see Greenify doesn't do system apps, though, and those are more the ones I think are causing the problem. For example, I know SMS push is in there and running on GalaxySBean although, obviously, it's useless on a Kindle Fire. I got that one. The problem is the others that I am not clear on what they're doing or whether I can 86 them without consequences or not.
What's the footprint of the ROM you're using? I'm looking for a more snappy performance than what I'm getting. I realize nothing's going to be as tailored to the hardware as stock, but I should be able to read a book and listen to Pandora at the same time.

[Q] Jelly Bean App Drawer Lag LT28AT

As stated in the title I have the AT&T ion and just like everyone else I got sick of running ICS. I decided to flash the international jelly bean firmware but no matter how many times I do I keep getting the battery issue, lag within my app drawer, and the HD video recording problem (which I know can't be fixed yet). Some people say the battery settles over time or after running down but my main issue is the lag. It's extremely annoying, and I only get it when scrolling through the app drawer, not the homescreens. I tried rooting and tweaking, clean installs (even without keeping the baseband) and even using third party launchers but no matter what it still lags. In Nova launcher for example I get it while opeining the app drawer. I've searched all over about this but I've only seen one other person with this problem. I have no idea what the problem is because it's obviously not the launcher itself, or the kernel, or the firmware in general but I can't seem to get rid of it unless to use ICS. So my question is: anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance
I am running the 28i rogers with the Honami home and don't have these issues. Restoring apps from a ics Sony backup can cause problems too. With standby mode I get a day from it on average. Try a clean install of the Rogers rom and de bloat it.
U could try to supercharge it..
sent from my aoba device :3
Thanks for the responses. But like I said it's not the launcher or anything like that. I used the stock international firmware and had it rooted and debloated, and I used the honami launcher which was definitely an improvement but didn't solve the problem. The battery thing seems to be hit or miss, i would say about half of those on jelly bean seem to have it. I'll look into supercharging it. Do you have a link to anything in the forums? thanks

Still on 4.1.2

Anyone else still this far back? I'm on Eclipse 412. I want to upgrade, but I've never found a rom that works as well. Tried some of the 4.2 and 4.4 but haven't found a good one yet. Didn't try any 4.3 for some reason. I just keep going back to 412, but Google services don't work on it and I'm sick of seeing that pop up on some apps. BETTER in what way exactly?
Cause I've tested all the 4.2/4.3/4.4 ROM's and nothing seems to work any BETTER than 4.1.2 for my needs, which for me is too have as many possible controls/functions available from touching the lower half of the screen, w/out having to sacrifice any screen space for status/navi bars and while holding it w/1 hand only using thumb, be it for any quick settings or launching/switching/closing apps or typing or turning the screen on/off/unlocked.
Extended desktop in 240dpi tablet mode helps too.

Extended desktop in 240dpi tablet mode helps too.

im on resurrection remix (4.4.2) and it is so much smoother and faster than the 4.3 and older ROMs ive tried (PA and PACMAN). I heard LiquidSmooth is also great so I consider upgrading to that at some point and switch to F2FS while im at it
Plenty of roms have the option to customize that nav and status bar (including hiding it for slide in) as well as app launchers and various other features. I recommend checking out reviews of popular roms on youtube or something, to check what the are capable of and then decide on which one to pick!

time to upgrade to 4.3/4.4. they're better than 4.1.2 for sure. 4.3 is more fluid for sure. Try the stock 4.3 rom or purity 4.3 + franco. you won't be disappointed.

Skip 4.3 if you can, it is horribly slow and heavy. at least go to 4.2.2 or 4.4 would even be better in term of overall performance and device usability.

i found 4.2.2 rom sluggish. i didn't experience the memory leak bug on 4.3. even the stock launcher on 4.2.2 was little laggy
Just stick with 4.1.2 if that works best for you. 4.2 is very laggy and 4.3 and 4.4 are so-so(not as smooth as 4.1.2).
