[Q] Surface 2 Bluetooth problem - Windows RT General

On Christmas I bought my girlfriend a Surface 2, although I'm not a big fan of MS (using Linux on desktop for about 10 years now), but she wanted it. I was really surprised - it's working very fast with amazing battery life.
The only bad thing I found about yet is Bluetooth - I just can't send anything to the tablet via BT. It seems that some settings refuse a connection to RT. So I tried to send something to another device from the tablet - this works without any problems, so I think there are some strange restrictions to send anything to the Surface. I tried with 3 devices: SGS3 (i9300, stock firmware 4.3 MK6), SGS3 (i9300, custom ROM: Temasek KitKat v26) and Nexus 7 (flo, custom ROM: Dirty Unicorns 5.0 latest OmniROM base). With none of the devices I could send anything from the device to the Surface 2, but easily from Surface to any of the devices. I can't find any extended options for Bluetooth in Surface options - there is only on/off switch and connected devices.
Can anyone help, please? Thank you in advance.

Yup, I had that problem too. Actually you have to
1. Activate the Bluetooth
2. Pair devices
3. Go to desktop and click on the Bluetooth icon on the bottom right
4. When the window with options pop-up, you have to go to "receive file"
5. Send your file
I didn't found an easier way to receive files tho..
Tell me if it did work
For 1st and 2nd step -> open the chams (right swipe from off the screen) then parameter - (bottom of the right screen) change pc settings - PC and peripherals - Bluetooth
Sorry if some textes are not correct, my Surface is in french and my english is not perfect.

Works! Thanks a lot! I wonder why MS makes it such complicated and that you have to do it on classic desktop, while they don't want it to be used but prefer Metro to do things. Well, it works, that's the most important thing.
Tapagetalkt via Dirty Unicorns 5.0 vom Nexus 7 (flo)

I share your opinion on that. receiving files should be automatic... If you pair devices, it means you trust the paired device so why would you need to do that crazy stuff ?
Maybe MS didn't thought about people who still use Bluetooth to send and receive files. I think it should be reported to add Bluetooth to the share cham (it would be easier to send files) and add automatic receive.
Glad I could help

I think just the charm would suffice personally. Automatic file receiving I dont think is the best idea in the world, even between previously paired devices.

Maybe. It would be nice if some dialog would appear that asks if you want to receive files if a file is sent from a paired device with an option always / once. That would be much more comfortable.

What I meant by automatic file receive is I would like to see a notifications that says "xxx wants to send you yyy.zzz. Do you accept ? "
Rather than just ignoring the request. Something that is already present on android devices

Main disadvantages
No system-wide file manager only a disadvantage to people like us, most people don't care
No videocalling
Limited third-party apps availability
No Bluetooth file transfers Without the file manager this is kinda pointless
No USB mass storage mode see previous answer
No multitasking it is there in a limited fashion, though right now only for the windows stuff (Zune, IE etc) but may be opened up to others in the future
No copy/paste slated to be in the first update in early (Jan) 2011
Too dependent on Zune software for computer file management and syncing I actually like this one, Zune can handle pictures, music, video, podcasts...what more do you need really?
No music player equalisers I'm sure someone will come up with an app.
No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser it will be there eventually.
No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far I hope this comes along soon, rumor is in the first update in Jan.
No DivX/XviD video support I'm not even sure what these file formats are as I have never needed them.
No internet tethering support this will probably have to be through an app from the carrier sadly.
New ringtones available only through the Marketplace I don't know where people heard this one...
Swapping memory card requires hard reset; cards not readable by computer from what I hear this is true, the memory is exandable, but not removable...
Which is true with is faulse ?
Which will fixed by later updates ?

alot of your answers hinge on things coming in the future. And on that note most done even have an exact release date.
this is true, but it is confirmed about the copy/paste, rumored about the nav. MS wanted to have a nice stable solid base OS before they went crazy with the options I am guessing.
can i record calls & sounds?

The only "file manager" is the zune desktop app which manages media. There is no way to access files/folders on the phone. Each app has it's own isolated file system.
Email/SMS. I've never heard of anyone ever using bluetooth file transfers.

On rare occasion I have done BT file transfer, usually when I am sending a .cab from my phone to my sisters or something, but that is a rarity.
You're joking right? I use BT file transfers pretty regularly. From my phone to my laptops and other phones. In fact last time I used it was just a few days ago to send some ring tones to a friend's mobile.
So I guess by saying there is no BT transfers means MS have gone down the Apple route of locking down the BT to just headsets and handsfree kits or am I mistaken in that assumption?
Never used it, never had the inclination to use it, never heard of anyone using it. Why not just email or SMS whatever it is you're trying to send?

I think a major disadvantage is the fact that they have not even integrated HTML5 into their browser as even the iPhone has that. Hopefully more sites will use HTML5 instead of Flash as I have an Android device and I find flash to be quite slow and buggy at times. Its good that they have announced that they will be bringing c&p as thats a needed feature.

I am sure the html5 and silverlight will make it's way into the browser, they just want to get it functional and solid first. Can't have EVERYTHING right away. I think what is there now is a great foundation.

I don't see how that's a major disadvantage given that we live in real reality and not Job's reality. HTML 5 will be important one day...today isn't that day. It's not ready for primetime. IE9 will start to be ported over into wp7, I'd be shocked if it's not up by the end of next year, and HTML5 still won't be a prevalent force on the web by then either.
Also, once they expand the API or allow other browser developers to get native access, then we may very well see HTML5 via those browsers.
I wonder what kind of security apps Microsoft will allow. I would like an app like Throttle lock on my phone over a pin # lock.
No USB mass storage or being able to swap out sd cards without hard resetting is an inconvenience. I'm often at a friend house and may want a file that's too big to email. It's easier to insert my card into their laptop, drag & drop a 5 gb file in the proper place on my sd card & take it home to place on my pc later. If some takes a long hd video with a flip cam, I rather them place it on my sd card than have them burn it to disc or shrink it & email it.
Copy & Paste is supposed to be available by the time Sprint gets a WM7 phone so I cant complain about that.
Too dependant on Zune software is an issue when wanting files from someone else PC that doesnt have Zune software.
No internet tethering support is a big issue for me.
Flash support isn't an issue if they allow 3rd party browsers, I would use Skyfire for WM7 if there is one available by the Sprint launch.
Dvix/Xvid support would be a plus but not a deal breaker.
Silverlight would be a plus as well but not a deal breaker either.
With no system wide file explorer, does that mean there will be no way to hide certain pics & videos from being found by someone else looking into the phone?
USB mass storage and file explorer are very important on my list. This is quite a disappointment.

Lack of multitasking to crazy extent - 3rd party apps are OFF even after just lockscreen.
Apps are also buggy, the ones from Marketplace.

Sorry mate but what kind of idiotic argument it is??!!
If I stand next to somebody or next to my own computer and want to send a file
why the hell should I email this?! I send it by BT! It's simpler, faster and OBVIOUS SINCE WE HAVE 2010, and bluetooth is known for ages!
It's hilarious you're trying to justify every stupid limitation by MS,
and if you're not having argument than you say you don't use it.
Knock knock. Most of the people never had inclination to use a smartphone,
should we abandon this?

I hear what you are saying, thought about that too. Not sure the method to google/motorola madness. If it was that simple, the 2way mic'd headset would work. (tried it and it sadly does not) Keep in mind that our devices are one of the first tabs (old school - but great!) and were not designed to make or receive voice calls (with out help). With that thought ... some pieces of the puzzle may not have been installed. Who knows lol. There is a lot more going on for native support. This has nothing to do with SIP calls, we all know that SIP, Google Voice Skype Video Chat/calls, bluetooth blah blah blah .... work. I'm talking about straight up native outgoing/incoming voice calls via usb voice/data modem. Directly from the device. A couple of us are looking into it. There are so many unanswered questions with this device, makes your head spin.

[MOD REQUEST] Auto popup keyboard on desktop

Is there anyway to mod windows 8 so that when you are using a tablet and touch a text entry field in desktop mode the keyboard automatically pops up (even better if it auto closes when you hit enter)? This is the most annoying "feature" of Windows 8 in desktop mode, when using a touch device (tablet).
I second the motion.
This would be an excellent mod if someone would do it for us.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium HD app
it would be pretty sweet if someone could get the same type of auto-keyboard on desktop as in metro. it would remove 25% of my touch
I'm in for this. Even win7 has a popup feature when you put the cursor on a text box.
I might be mistaken, but I think in one of the betas the keyboard worked like that on my Acer W500, but not anymore...

May this be one of that things that Microsoft disables from registry, but it's still accessible?
I'd be happy if I could get the behaviour from Windows 7 back where when I clicked on a text field there was a floating button for the keyboard next to the input.
Please... I already fixed ff w/ user chrome to make the url bar bigger and tablet friendly.
This is one of the last tweaks I need to do.
I'm sure if the feature can't be re-enabled someone can replicate launching the keyboard automatically with autohotkey?
Yes please. Can someone do this mid? Its really annoying to manually invoke and dismiss keyboard everytime in desktop mode

This lil bit of AutoIt code works pretty well for me to automatically pop up the keyboard..
It polls the mouse cursor every 750ms to see if the cursor is an i-beam, and if so then it launches the keyboard (TabTip.exe).
Code:
While 1
$cursor = MouseGetCursor()
If $cursor = 5 Then ShellExecute('"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink\TabTip.exe"')
Sleep(750)
WEnd
Simple, but seems to fulfill my immediate needs for now. Hope you find it useful as well.
Hmm, I'd never heard of autoit before. Unfortunately, it looks unlikely to run on Windows RT (at least without us getting our hands on the source...) so I wonder if there's a way to do it with one of Windows' several built-in scripting languages...

Wow - thanks for this! I'm not running RT (traded my Surface RT for a Samsung ATIIV running Win8 Pro that has similar goofy windows 8 issues. So to GoodaytoDie (and other devs) I hope you can find a way to port AutoIT to Win RT - it has already saved me many hours of frustration and I am going to donate to the AutoIt team.

Just remember that I am running Win 8, not RT.. Anyway, I downloaded and installed AutoIt 3 from the AutoIt website (autoitscript.com). Then I copied tj!2k7's script into notepad, and named it keyboard.au3 ( saved as type *.txt but with the au3 extension). Then just right click on the au3 file, open with AutoIt and it will run the script - whenever you position the cursor in a text box, i.e., you see the cursor change to an I-beam, the keyboard will pop up - it's brilliant. Ther keyboard does not autopop down but I found if you hit the enter key it disappears.

Bluetooth Mouse functionality questions

For those of you with the 2014 edition who have used a bluetooth mouse, what does the right click do?
Hey all,
I posted the following question on another thread about a specific bluetooth mouse, and didn't get a response so I figured I'd give it another try with a general post.
I use my samsung devices (Galaxy S1, Tab 10 v1, Note 10 2012 edition, and lately an S4) for connecting to work using the citrix thin client. (In addition to all the other things that make the samsung devices great)
One of the problems I've had since samsung moved to jellybean and beyond is the mouse support. Ice cream and prior, when using a bt mouse, the right click seemed to be ignored by the os, or didn't do anything different than the left click unless you were in a app that supported it. Specifically, passing on a right click command in remote desktop to the session.
After JB, the right click on a mouse seems to have been mapped at the OS level to the 'back' function. This makes using a samsung android device as my thin terminal very difficult, as you still need right click on a lot of standard desktop apps. When I'm connected to my remote desktop, and use the right-click the applications prompts to exit. I don't think the right click ever even gets passed along.
(If you want to know irony, pre JB the mouse worked fine, but CTRL and ALT keypresses were ignored by the Os. try going without easy cut and paste for a day when you work with spreadsheets a lot. )
Anyway, my question is, for those of you with the 2014 edition who have used a bluetooth mouse, what does the right click do?
I'm sending in my 2012 edition to amazon for a trade in, and I'm seriously thinking about getting the 2014 10 or the new 12.2 monster, but if the 12.2 is going to be $1k, I might as well go with a surface pro device for now.
If you're still reading, thanks, I know I've gone on a bit. I've struggled with this issue for a while and it makes it very difficult for me to travel lightly. I can use my android devices in a pinch, but man does it drive me nuts when I need to right click on something and can't Try it sometime. You'll throw your mouse across the godderned room. If you happen to know of any other workarounds for this issue, feel free to make my day.
Right click brings me back, it is annoying when I'm browsing the Web and I want to open a link in a new tab.
I do use "jump" for rdp and it does pass the right click through the session. I have "pocket cloud" as well if you would like me to check that as well.

Thank you, unfortunately I don't have a choice for my remote desktop client as it's a corporate thing. So it appears that the jump client you are using is blocking that default function and forcing the right click.. interesting. I would be interested to know if pocket cloud does the same, but only anecdotally.
I hate the 'back' functionality of google's mouse support. I cannot find any way to adjust it. Heck, turning it off would be an improvement.

Switching to W10M from iOS/Android//BB's Domain

Dears,
days ago I purchased a Lumia 950XL Dual SIM after playing for years BBOS and Android and I want trust in it (I am awaiting so much the Elite X3).
The device is awesome and now updated with that releases Firmware: 16082.36013 OS: 14379.0
With me G5, Passport, iPhone 6... I felt all the enviro with pro and cons as most of you.
If the administrators/moderators agree we can stick that topic and make it for people want try that OS not for fun but as daily working unique wingman.
I have some hot questions:
-) Did we have application AirDroid/Pushbullet like to manage the phone directly from the PC/Mac/Linux?
-) Does it is possible to have quick link in the Start menu to call/send sms/send group sms like the Android widget?
-) Does it is possible to import directly the SMS without follow the onedrive way from an Android phone?
Below a VS I did Lumia 950XL and LG G5 (the previous used working phone) with v10g:

And the first meet with Continuum as a geek or as XDA docet. Next gallery, promise, you will have to look for Sherlock (Apple or the Original of Baker Street it's up to you) to see where a single wired cable is!

1. Have you tried Pushile http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/pushile/c72b5765-58ad-4952-b7f9-6fbdfdad677a ?
2. You can pin a contact to the start menu, if that's what you mean.
3. contacts+message backup https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/contacts-message-backup/9nblgggz57gm
Why are you impressed with this Continuum scam?

Hello and thank you as first!
About the points:
1. Thanks it looks promising, but I need a system with Windows 10 (desktop) to install the client? I will check the docs inside the page.
2. I can create a pin to the name of the people but not to the number or the service inside is profile. E.g. If for Mr.X I what pin his mobile number to send an SMS, I have to access to his profile to tap on "send message" not directly like with a widget.
3. Thanks! I will try.
About Continuum it was an idea to manage the phone looking forward for a full implementation with the X3 from Elite. Which device did you have now?
Cheers,
