4.3 data drop and Airave blocking texts - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi.
I'm sure this has been a topic that has come up before, but I've exhausted my Google searches. I just received a new (refurb) Gnex three days ago due to dropping mine on the cement. Everything seems fine with it except for two things.
1) It came with 4.3 on it. Great, that was nice. However, I have noticed that coming from 4g to 3g I will lose data completely unless I toggle the mobile data. It LOOKS like I am still connected...blue bars etc. But I'm not. Makes this phone useless. I had this problem on my old Gnex when testing Kit Kat roms. I thought it was cause the KK roms were still a wip. Any help?
2) While connected to my Airave at home I can't send one single text. I have tried everything. PRL updates, profile updates, resetting Airave, turning on and off. Everything I could think of. My old phone NEVER had this issue.
Did I get a lemon?

I have been having the same issues with my phone recently. I just started slowly, texts not going through here and then.. but then it started snowballing to the point that I cannot currently make/receive phone calls or texts. I get 3g/4g data.. and sometimes, just sometimes, I can get texts when I'm outside. I've tried to flash a ton of different radios and I have even opened up my phone to see if anything was disconnected.. Nothing appears to be wrong at the moment.

[Q] 3g connection will not stay up

So for the past 2 weeks I am having issues that basically render my phone unusable for 99% of the reasons I bought it. Posted a thread before but I think it got lost when the forums were having some instability around that time...
My 3g connection will NOT stay up. I did nothing to provoke this. No system changes. The sequence of events:
-Went out of the country with my phone on airplane mode the whole time
-Got back, a day or two later had an incorrect timestamp on my incoming SMS (they were showing up +3 hours)
-Called customer service, she activated a tester phone and confirmed that it was a system-side issue on the incoming SMS (somehow they were getting a timestamp from the system where my number is located, in Eastern time, while I am actually located in Pacific nowadays).
-Put in a trouble ticket after 2 hours trying to solve the SMS issue over the phone.
-Next day, my 3g connection begins dropping CONSTANTLY. As it stands, it won't stay connected more than 30 seconds. It will cycle to 1x sometimes, and then drop to a basic-service-only.
-Tried reinstalling my ROM several times to no effect.
-Started experiencing some very strange noises in SOME calls, such as it sounding like a chainsaw when the other person is talking. Happens very sporadically.
-Just today I found some instructions here for correcting my NAM settings, which were actually messed up as it turns out, but didn't fix anything.
At this point I actually have the phone unrooted and back to factory default everything, with no change. I've got a warranty replacement phone coming in shortly, but I'd still rather keep this one if I'm able to.
Is there anything I haven't tried that might be the case on my end? Has anyone seen this problem before? Has my phone antenna simply gone belly-up, or is this something that might still be fixed at some deep system-setting level, or with further calls to tech support?
So... I guess that's a no?

Had the same problem with my phone before I rooted my phone and starting to apply ROM's. I havent had a problem since. But when I had that problem, I would just keep turning on and off the 3g and it would stay for a while. It was just a quick fix but it worked. Off subject how did you unroot your phone and put it back top stock?
My phone just started doing this this yesterday. Whenever I reboot it, it'll come up, switch to 1x mode. After a while it'll try to switch to 3g mode, fail, switch to no service, and then either go to just basic voice with no data or back into 1x mode. I've tried updating the radio, switching roms, dialing *228, nothing seems to help.
Jager, instructions on a full reset are right here under section 6. I'm not sure why it's struck out. Definitely suggest poking around more first.
New phone's in and still having major connectivity issues. The SMS timestamp remains as it was, and I can't get (steadily) more than like 35kbps. I'll occasionally bump to 500kbps for a quick spurt, and then my connection will drop entirely and struggle to get back up to 35kbps. My wife's Incredible works perfectly fine in the exact same locations, too, so this is something that absolutely has to be on Verizon's side, specific to my line.
Me too
My phone has also been experiencing the loss of 3G service as well. I checked my wife's Moto Droid 1 and it was also having difficulty connecting as well. I called Verizon and they were absolutely no help whatsoever. I am either getting nothing or 1X in places where I have always had 3G. This is very frustrating. I have flashed 3 different ROMs (all of which have worked fine in the past), but the result always seems to be the same. Anyone else out there with this issue?

Someone help! Same issue! I can no longer get data....PERIOD. I have to stay connected to wifi, or I don't get my emails, internet, etc.
Need to fix this!
3G connection issues
I just got off the phone with Verizon Tech support. They are CONVINCED that it is an issue with my phone (and my wife's). Gee, how can 2 different phones, from different manufacturers have the SAME issue at the SAME time? Hmm, doesn't sound very promising to me.
They are sending out a replacement for my wife's Moto Droid to see if it is a phone issue (she has been having other issues with it anyway...). If hers improves, I may send mine back, but I don't want to have to unroot, etc. Plus I like the Super-Amoled screen . When did trouble-shooting turn to "replace the hardware first" ???
Regards!
This happened to me recently as well and was fixed with a factory reset.
I am rooted with S-off, so a normal factory reset via Menu->Settings->SD & Phone Storage-> Factory Data Reset didn't go well for me. Not sure of the exact reason, but I just followed the instructions in this post to restore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436
Programming your phone by dialing *228 is necessary afterwards as well, as khukman states below. Thanks for pointing that out.
After I completed this, I redid root, restored my nandroid backup and didn't lose a thing, plus my 3G is working again!
*A fair warning: Doing this formats the internal storage (emmc). I'd recommend backing up any photos, music, etc that you have stored on emmc before doing this!

So I tried the above suggestion about going back to completely stock 2.2 and I have the same results. On one hand, I am now back to S-ON and stock Froyo, so if I want to send it back to Verizon, they are none the wiser that I was rooted, but on the other hand I STILL HAVE CRAPPY 3G SERVICE!!! Man, I feel like I'm on AT&T or something LOL! I'll keep an eye on it for the rest of the day and see how it does and report back.
Back in 3G!!!!!
After getting back to stock Froyo, as described in the previous post, I was still unable to get a good 3G lock. I read in another thread where someone did a 'Factory Data Reset' and it took care of it. When you do this, you have to dial #228 and let it program your phone as it did the first time when you got it. Once I did this, I had (and still have) a solid lock on 3G like I used to. I think that it was one of the Sprint ROMs that screwed this up in the first place (the OP states that you have to backup your PRLs, etc. before installing, then re-install them afterwards). I can't remember if I did this or not, so it may be my fault after all, but regardless, I am thrilled that once again I have a connected smartphone thanks to the resources contained on XDA!
Regards!
I myself am now rocking a refurb that has no trouble at all... A complete revert to stock did absolutely nothing to resolve my trouble.
Though I didn't try doing a factory reset AFTER reinstalling the stock ROM. Hmm. Maybe there was something in the cache still. I suppose in my case I'll never really know, but I'm glad you guys were able to resolve the situation with your original hardware.

Did you follow the steps in the thread I posted above? Doing that should completely format and re-image your phone. Much more than just installing a stock ROM. I myself tried so many different variations of ROMs, radios, etc and nothing did the trick until I followed that thread.

Random Dropping mobile network connection...

I rooted my Evo a while back. No problems. After a few months I started getting these weird problems where I would get no 3g network at all. I was running Caulkins ROM and now MikFROYO ROM. Still the same problems, on both.
Flashed the bundle radio update pack (comb) from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Still have this intermitten issue. Nothing regarding the internet or even calls would work. I can't make phone calls, get on the internet, facebook apps stop syncing everything. The bars on top become all empty. Not 1 bar at all.
I try restarting and even shutdown and turn the phone back on but none of this works... I even did my prl/profile etc. updates and still. The only way to get everything back up is to wait. After a while everything kicks back in and it's working again.
Can anyone help me with this? It's really frustrating and I've had this phone from release day. It only started this recently and it's intermittent and hard to pinpoint anything structured with why and when this would happen...
No one else has ever had this problem?

Phone is consistantly "searching for service". HELP.

Hey guys. I just got a Galaxy Nexus from Best Buy yesterday and I was pretty excited until I walked out the door. I tried texting my friend and the phone could hardly send texts, most of them caused a red exclamation to pop up next to them. I also tried sending out calls and the phone would just be silent for a couple seconds and then it would automatically hang up. I also was dropping 4g when I tried to use it (but I did have it intermittantly). I tried dialing *228, but a message always popped up saying "Call not sent" when I did so.
Having these issues, I went back to Best Buy. They said it was probably because it was taking awhile for the phone to fully be on the 4g network, but they troubleshooted anyways. They tried updating the PRL (which didn't work). They tried doing software and hardware resets. They also ended up going through 4 different sim cards that all did not work, so they had to call Verizon to try and fix it. Verizon said that the phone wasn't even shown as activated on their system. So what they did was activate a sim card before putting it in my phone. My phone activated fairly quickly after this and seemed to be working well. My signal had full bars, my 4g was working. They did test calls and texts and it worked perfect. So, they gave me the phone and told me I should be all set. 5 minutes down the road I start trying to use it, and my signal was cutting in an out. So I tried making calls and texts and they worked, and I went on my 4g and it worked. But slowly as the day progressed the service got worse and worse and now today, my phone is even worse than how it was when I started. It is constantly "searching for service" and now I never have a signal. I don't know whats wrong with this phone. Is it software? Hardware?
I checked and I am on a software revision 10 phone, which from reading I thought was supposed to fix many of these problems. I am also on the latest software and baseband update.

[Q] Text messages and calls not being received

I've been having a problem with receiving texts sometimes and I recently noticed that it happens with call apparently. The issue is that I'm texting people back and forth and then all of a sudden I wont receive messages for a long time (couple hours). At some point, someone's text message will push through all of the other ones all at the same time. Sometimes when I assume i'm having this issue, I will send a text to myself and it will push the other ones through as well. Recently though I was made aware that during this "outage", I also was not able to receive phone calls at all. The signal is strong at all times (3-4 bars). Also happens when I'm home all day and not changing locations when it will suddenly stop getting texts and calls. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I restarted the phone and changed cell towers with the Airplane mode many times and the issue continues to happen at random times. It is really inconvenient. Suggestions?
Technical details: I use the stock 4.1.1 Rom that comes with AT&T S3. I do have LTE in my area.
And now it has happened 3 days in a row but at different times of day. This is a huge problem for me as I use my phone a lot. Any help would be appreciated
You still have your IMEI number via settings -> about phone -> status?

TRy making sure yiur not in airplane mode. i was stuck in airplane for a week ._____________.:cyclops:
That's weird. Re-seat your SIM card, if that doesn't do anything then take a trip to your nearest AT&T store/dealer and have them swap out your SIM card and see if it still occurs after that.
I had a similar problem a while back and it happened to be a network problem with my carrier. Gave them a call and all is fine now.

It happend to me too. I went to att store and get new sim. No problem for last 15-20 days. Looks like i got stronger signal too.
Just to give anyone interested in this an update:
I went to the AT&T store today and told them my issue so they told me to go to the nearest AT&T device support center (which was really far away). People over there told me they heard about this issue many times over the past couple of months. The guy working there had a S3 and said he has the same problem. They received an email from the higher-ups this morning specifically talking about this random outage thing I have and that they are currently working on it. They were told to not exchange phones or sim cards because of this since it wont help. The issue involves a combination of Network and Jelly Bean software problems and happens on all new LTE devices that have Jelly Bean from AT&T. They told me to check periodically if there is a solution.
I guess I just gotta wait. Unless someone recommends a ROM that is not based on the latest AT&T jelly bean?
Bumping it up, both me and my wife have had this happen. From what im read its a pretty widespread deal.
Anyone know of a work around at least until they fix it?
Keep us updated
Same problem here - switched from Verizon to AT&T last month and started noticing this problem a few weeks ago. Back then a Google search didn't find much on it, but this thread looks promising.
Just to add my two cents: I'm on a rooted S3 with task650's AOKP (4.2.1) build 12.23.2012 (link). Made sure to flash the modem for my phone (I747UCLI5 from here). Problem: phone randomly won't receive calls or texts. Sometimes calling someone will fix it.
I read somewhere that on AT&T, calls and texts are received over 3G and sometimes phones have difficulty switching from 4G. Anyone know if this is true?
Do a full wipe /system, /data, /cache, /dalvik cache. And your problems should be gone 9 times out of 10 that's usually everybodys problem

Seems to still be working fine.
I started a thread on this also and just yesterday received some info from AT&T tech.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123974
guys,
it is an ATT issue,
here is a temp solution for a fix:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect

[Q] Data Connetion

Hello all!
I am having constant data issues all day where I go to use an app that needs it, it says that no data connection can be found or something. I turn the radio off, turn it back on and then it works. It's a good work-around but it does get very annoying. I've tried multiple 4.4.2 roms but no avail. I tried a different kernel but I couldn't even use the phone. Any ideas?
Same for me; I'm rooted now but it happened before root and after the JB ota updates. Annoying but otherwise I love this phone
I think this has been a known issue since ICS (I could be wrong though).
If anyone knows a fix that would be cool (I have GSM google play gnex)
My issues started late last night, lost data connection and it didn't come back. On my way home, it connected then lost again at home. Went to Verizon today and they couldn't figure it out, said possibly the radio is taking a crap.
On my way to work, it connects then gone. I tried flashing the radio, pulled battery, booted without sim, formatted cache and delvic. I have tried everything and think it's the end of the line for it
I've been rooted since the day I got it and had the issue once a while back but it straightened out and has been great since.
Certain CyanogenMod ROMs have trouble with the Network Modes sticking. Which carrier are you using? For my carrier, I had to have the correct APNs set to get 4G and MMS working. It might be that this is the problem in most cases, especially when the phone switches between 4G and 3G in spotty areas.
