tmo gn3 wifi tethering/hotspot - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Your milage may vary. (This is something that works for me and may not work for you. I found that this way works for me and does not lead me to the up sell page unlike connecting my com outer directly to my gnote 3)
P.s. not all of these steps may apply to every phone as some steps/options may be unavailable.
So I tried something yesterday. Yesterday, I took my note 10.1 2014 edition (along with my sgsiii and my other phone) and hooked it with my wife tethering from my tmo note 3.
Steps on note 3:
1. Create a new apn. Have everything copied over from the original default apn that came with the note 3 but do not copy over the field "apn type" as this will 'somehow' obstruct the tethering and will always lead you to the up sell page.
2. Download your choice of any hotspot toggles on the market(pref. A widget), that way you can enable the hotspot from your home screen and not from the settings menu.
3. Toggle the widget. There should be a dialog box that pops up saying "wait til we verify you account" or some thing. Press the home button once that dialog shows up.
Steps on hooking the computer up.
(I have also used this with another android phone and tablet that I had laying around)
If on an Android phone 2.3.7 and later,
1 connect to wifi.
2. Connect to computer via usb but do not enable the storage option if one is prompted.
3. Turn on usb tethering.
4. Profit.:victory:
Or with a tablet(I used my SGN10.1 2014)
Your tethering settings are not shown.
1. Download the app tethering settings shortcut.
2. Connect to the hotspot.
3. Press on the app icon to go into the tether settings.
4 enable the usb tether.
5. Profit.
And yes I know this is a longer way of getting Internet to my computer but hey, what works is what works.

HOW TO: Teather with AT&T Tilt 2

I thought I would post a quick how-to on getting a stock ROM WM 6.5 Tilt 2 to teather. I appologize if this has been posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything myself.
I chose to use a USB connection to teather because connecting over Wifi or Bluetooth drains phone and laptop battery. USB will keep the Tilt 2 at a decent temperature and charge.
1. Open your registry editor (or download one if you don't have one) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings
2. ForceCellConnection should be set to "AT&T ISP". Change the value to to "Media NET".
3. Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable.
4. Navigate to the "Internet Sharing" app on your start menu. (If you don't have a shortcut on your start menu, the program is located in the Windows root folder.)
5. Select USB from the drop-down menu and click connect.
6. You are now ready to surf the web.
**I am not responsible for any damages or charges incurred by using this mod.
TIPS:
-If this doesn't work on your first try, you may need to soft reset the device.
This works, but note that this is only needed on Stock Rom(s). Most chefs cook a Internet Sharing application in which you choose the connection right off the bat from within it. Thanks for the info, though.
yes if you delete forcecellconnection you get any easy drop down menu to select media net or whatever else you want. i normally do usb because its the most stable, but bluetooth is the easiest, and wifi is the most flexible. youre not limited to one option anyways.

[Q] Internet pass-through troubles

Heres the situation:
I'd like to use my computer's internet connection. So I plug in my phone and select USB internet pass-through in the popup dialog. The problem is that after about a minute or two it fails, with a popup saying that either I don't have HTC Sync installed or another phone is using it, whereas none of it is true. I do have the very latest of HTC Sync and driver installed.
I am running Vista (Home Premium) and using a USB 3G Modem. The phone is stock HTC Desire Z (EU).
Please bear in mind that I just don't have any other way to connect my phone to the computer or the internet other than the way I am trying. Also I don't want to root the phone. Not yet.
I have tried:
Installing HTC Sync & drivers through "Run as administrator".
While the phone was trying to activate the mode I tried reseting the local area connection (this shows up when you select the mode) - worked for a while, kept disconnecting me every few minutes.
I first activated the internet passthrough (somehow it activated) then connected the usb 3g modem - this worked it didn't disconnect me, but after a restart (the next day) none of the above worked. The phone seemed to be confused because in the wireless & networks it said that "connect to a pc through usb, please" - acted like its not connected at all.
I know that the phone should be ok, because at work (WinXP) it enables in a few seconds - although cannot use internet bec. android does not support proxies.
The passthrough service is running.
I have disabled the firewall.
Any ideas would be very welcome..
1.Right click on the network icon in the task bar
2.Click on Open network connections
3. There would be two local are connections. Find out your HTC mobiles connection.
4.Right Click and select properties.
5. select Internet TCP/IP and click on properties
6. Select Obtain an IP adress automatically

USB Tethering on Mac OS X

I read in the manual under the tethering chapter that USB tethering works out of the box on Windows, Mac OS X, or latest Linux distros.
Spend all day yesterday trying to get it to work on my 15" MBP running Lion 10.7.2 with no luck.
Is there anyone that can point me to the right direction to get this to work. I do not want to use third party tethering apps.
Thank you!
Not going to work ; where did you read it works on Lion?
ICS is still using NDIS based USB tether and Mac OS X (Snow Leopard thru to Lion) does not support this.
I just tested this - plugged GN to my Mac while USB tethering is on, if it was a non NDIS Mac compatible network adapter via USB it would have showed up in System Preferences, Network - it didn't
If I redirect the USB to my Windows VM on Fusion right away an NDIS adapter showed up and the Windows VM worked with tethering.
It's in the manual under the tethering. Clearly states Mac as one of the options.
"Share your phone's data connection via USB
If your computer is running Windows 7, Mac OS X, or a recent distribution of some flavors of Linux (such as Ubuntu), you can follow these instructions without any special preparation.
If you're running a version of Windows that precedes Windows 7, or some other operating system, you may need to prepare your computer to establish a network connection via USB.
1 Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.
A USB icon appears at the top of the screen, and the notification Connected as a media device or Connected as a camera appears briefly at the top of the screen. For the purposes of tethering, the type of connection doesn't matter.
2 Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Tethering & portable hotspot.
3 Check USB tethering.
Your computer is now sharing your device's data connection.
4 To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck USB tethering or disconnect the USB cable."
Have you tried something like PdaNet?

I'd like to get it to work natively without the third party apps.

Getting USB tethering working seemed like a huge hassle on my MBP, just use Bluetooth tether or hotspot is your best option

Its a big hassle to set up USB tether on OSX. It requires creating a new network config in system preferences and setting it up properly. Super annoying I ended up just WiFi tethering.

So have you seen an NDIS 10.7 driver stack - I haven't.. I don't think it's at all possible with a standard AOSP ICS device

There are a few benefits though.
- I'm on T-Mobile, so for me, I don't have to fork over another payment just for tethering.
- They've already bundled all the software you need in one neat package, so it takes most of the guess work out, especially on mac

That new config settings config is what I need. Do you mind sharing the parameters? Thanks.

Wait so nobody knows?
Just use wifi. You can still keep the phone charged over USB while doing that.

That's given and its not the point. I wanna know how to USB tether since the tutorial states that is possible on a mac os x...

The earlier poster is in error.. USB Tethering is RNDIS only = NO SUPPORT ON MAC OS X.
Unless you are planning on writing an RNDIS driver you are out of luck with the built in ICS tethering. You will need to use a 3rd party app like EasyTether or just use WiFi tethering.

I just don't understand why did Google talk about USB tethering support out of the box in International GN manual as well as in Verizon's manual. WTF?!

I have the same question.
I am not on Verizon (living in Germany), and have a GSM native GN. In the (online) manual it is clearly stated that it works with Mac and cable. But as the others have written and as I experienced, it simply does not work :-(
Please do not tell me that I should use Wifi ;-) Yes, this works, but it consumes much more battery compared to cable.
i got it easy by using HTC sensation XL it has two options windows or MAC OS tethering ,, but i cant do it here on GN there is an app can do that .ClockworkMod Tether ...
Oddly enough, if you plug a Nexus S into a Mac and do USB tethering, it works fine using RNDIS or some other witchcraft.
If anyone is still looking for the T-Mobile US settings for tethering, try this:
When you enable tethering, have an active ADB connection, and you receive a pop-up in OS X that says you have a new unconfigured network device, then you're good to enter these settings and connect:
Telephone Number: *99***1#
Username: GPRS
Password: GPRS
I got the above credentials from the T-Mobile WebConnect Manager for OS X using one of my Tablet Internet Device SIM Cards in a Rocket 3.0 USB stick. So, if Authentication fails using the above credentials, meaning that OS X dials the connection, says "Authenticating. . .", then disconnects without ever saying "Connected", then try these credentials:
Username: none
Password: none
If that still doesn't work, leave the Username and passwords blank.
Click the Advanced Button:
Modem Tab:
Notes About Which Vendor to select:
If you don't have a Samsung, Motorola or Sony Ericson Android Device, and the modem does not supply a .ccl script or nothing comes up in the Model drop down list after select other, then try choosing Generic. My LG p999 (G2x), LG v909, Dell Streak 7, HTC One X and HTC Amaze 4G, and Nexus One displayed a Model corresponding to the device that was connected when I selected Other as the Vendor.
I can verify that this works on all of my Samsung devices, when choosing Samsung as the Vendor. IK verified it on my Galaxy Nexus (GSM i9250), Nexus S, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S 4G, and Galaxy S Vibrant.
Model: GPRS (GSM/3G)
APN*: epc.tmobile.com
CID**: 1 (This is the Country ID for the US, I am not sure what countries are represented by the other CID integers).
*APN is the acronym for Access Point Name.
**CID: This should only appear when selecting Generic as the Vendor.
DNS Tab:
Leave these blank, they should fill dynamically, if they don't, try using 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 for DNS servers and tmobile.com as the search domain.
WINS Tab:
Leave blank
Proxies Tab:
Leave all unchecked, except for Use PASV FTP.
PPP Tab:
Make sure the following are not selected:
Send PPP echo packets
Make sure the following items are checked/selected:
Use TCP header compression
Use Verbose Logging (once you have gotten connected, you can probably disable this)
Redial 5 times if busy, waiting 10 seconds before redialing
Make sure Terminal script is set to None.
For resolving issues make sure to select Use verbose logging, connect using a terminal window, and Send PPP echo packets (only if the modem commands are not being displayed in the terminal window).
All the rest of the PPP options, e.g. Automatic connections and disconnecting are set to your personal preferences and security concerns.
I got it working by turning data off (on the phone)
Also works when the phone is connected to wifi
After connecting on the Mac, you can turn data on and it will stay connected

Hotspot and Wifi issues

Hi,
On my nexus starting a hotspot is fine but pc's take ages to connect says limited access for several minuets then will disconnect and reconnect several time and then work.
also every time i use it the pc treats it as a whole new network and asks to set the network location every time gets very annoying why does it do this?
Cheers
I had the same problem when I was at a friends place and they didn't have internet so I used my hotspot (we were on a windows PC). It wouldn't connect for the longest time, so I tried changing around some settings. Instead of the security being set to "open" (i.e. none) I changed it to WPA2 PSK and set some random password. Then we right clicked on the network on the computer, went to security, typed the random password, and then it connected almost instantly. Seemed like it had a problem connecting to the "open" network. IDK if this is anything that relates to your problem, just sharing my experience.
I have this to when my friend with his prepaid phone wants to connect... this is how to fix it:
1: turn on wifi on the device that needs internet
2: turn on your hotspot
3: click hotspot settings. Your hotspot will frease (the signal).
4: click ok without changing a thing
5: your hotspot will unfrease and update it's connection settings.
6: let your phone cool down for 15 seconds... the phone's creating a tunnel and setting up it's own ip-adress
7: connect your device to the hotspot
8: ?
9: WIN!

[Q] USB Tethering in CyanogenMod 9.1.0 - 3.x Kernel - Final

Hi XDA Members
I have a question about the CyanogenMod 9.1.0 - 3.x Kernel - Final on the HTC Desire Z
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492461)
I Installed it yesterday including new radio and rils.
Everything works perfectly and I really love the Mod.
There is only one thing I am fighting with, that is USB-tethering.
In android settings I can press the usb tethering button. It will have no effect, though, and the checkbox will not be checked.
If I try to hit the usb tethering button a second time, the checkbox will be checked and the second text line of the field will vanish. However this also will have no effect on the actual tethering. After leaving the settings screen and returning back, the checkbox will be unchecked again. There is also no tethering symbol on the status bar /notification drawer either.
I also tried using a tethering widget ("Tethering Widget", https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achmyr.android.froyo&hl=en)
I can use it only after hitting the USB tethering button in the Android settings. The application will confirm tethering as active. Also the symbol in the status bar /notification drawer will appear. And also the usb tethering checkbox will be checked and say: tethering. However, the device does not actually tether.
The button greys out correctly if I disconnect the USB, so I guess the device recognizes the connection.
Also Wifi tethering and USB storage works correctly.
Before I used cm 7.2 stable, with working usb-tethering.
In the dev-mod forum I can not find people complaining about similar things. I checked XDA forums and other forums for people having same issues but couldn`t find someone sharing these exact symptoms.
I did my best to describe the problem as closely as possible. Please let me know if you have any ideas about it.
Thanks for any kind of help and congratulations for the mod. I love it!
All the best
Hanswurst517
EDIT: I could get it to work on windows using this tip: http://www.theandroidsource.com/android-forum/718-cyanogenmod-usb-tethering-fix.html
Part of the problem seemed to be a windows7 driver problem.
However I can only use tethering by using the tethering widget, but not using the tethering button in the settings menu.
In order to use the widget, the tethering button in the settings menu has to be pushed once. otherwise the widget won't recognize usb connection.
here is your solution..works with any android mobile till yet i have tried..!
1.Plug in your phone via USB, enable USB tethering.
2.Open device manager (in control panel)
3.Find your phone on the list, it should be listed as RNDIS device. It will have a ? and yellow !
4.Right click on it and select 'update driver'
5.When the window pops up, select 'browse my computer for driver software'
6.Select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
7.For device type select Network adapters.
8.For manufacturer select Microsoft Corporation
9.Then select 'Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device'
10.Hit next, it will give you a warning...ignore it and hit yes.
