Hi,
I am facing performance problems after upgrading to 4.3. The battery life too has reduced after upgrading to 4.3. I am running stock version and everything was working fine with original version (i think 4.1). Has anyone seen performance/battery issues with stock 4.3?
I am using company phone and one of the requirement is to have no root access for receiving emails. Is it possible to install root -> Install custom ROM -> and then un-root? Will custom ROM work without root access?
Usually the bloatware causes the battery drains. As far as I know you cannot use a custom ROM and then un-root.

Hi I just upgraded to 4.3 yesterday and I noticed there is a faster battery drain. Right now I changed the display and some configurations to see if it works.
I noticed also that it became slow and the RAM usage has gone past 1.3gb and I've turned off the sync and back ground apps. Even after restarting it.
Anyone else noticed this?

performance issues on note 2 shv-e250s 4.3 version
after upgrading to 4.3 JB on note 2, the ram is consumed always up to 80%, and after taking a picture with camera it takes forever to view the last picture taken, battery life depletes faster than previous 4.1.2.. anyone found a fix? will try a hard reset today..
---------- Post added at 09:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:31 AM ----------
gallery transition issue from camera lag fixed with Hard reset, now i dont know how to remove bloatware and the startup carrier screen, please help, ram is at 65% with no apps, just bloatware
So it looks I am not alone. The lag is noticeable and frequent. I planned to root and custom ROM however the root did not work
Well... if you guys prefer a Rooted stock ROM, I suggest you guys get it root and remove all the bloatware using system app remover or something. It's available in Google Play. After that, if you afraid the other apps might drain the battery, try Greenify app. For the app's details please refer the descriptions in Google Play... sorry. You also can try One Power Guard app to improve battery life.
I used this way to maintain my battery life. Of course I also mod everything possible to save more battery life.
For those who really want some kick ass battery saving method, try flash a custom kernel and undervolt the device.
I have tried many things after a year using note 2. If you guys interested to know more about what I've done, welcome to reply or pm me.

takumibunta, thanks for the info and the willingness to help!
I'm kind of new to rooting and android tempering, so sorry if my questions seem stupid. I have a Note II and made an OTA upgrade to 4.3. I have the same issue as the thread starter, battery drainage is awful. Everything else is fine, but the battery drainage is just a dealbreaker.
I've read quite a few threads about downgrading or rooting Note II, and they made me all the more confused. I understand that the upgrade to 4.3 includes Knox, which doesn't allow rooting/flashing. Some actually say that trying to root or flash another recovery on Knox can brick the phone.
Do you possible know a step-by-step guide to downgrading and/or rooting a Note II with 4.3 and Knox, or is there another practical solution that can improve battery life without rooting?
usually after a major update like this, i'd suggest doing a factory wipe/ reset. that seems to work on my other devices (with major updates).
ya, it can be a pain having to reinstall stuffs, etc... but usually, that works.
mydragoon, thanks for the input, I've tried that, but I'm afraid it only wiped all the files & settings. Still stuck with android 4.3 and poor battery life... Any other ideas?

I think there is a method to root Android 4.3 without triggering the knox count. And yes, I did see a topic which showed step by step instructions about rooting the phone. I will find the post again and share... Lastly, if you trying to improve battery life without rooting the phone, I think you'll get these answers such as lower the brightness, turn off Wi-Fi and 3G when you are not using the phone bla bla bla. I'm sorry if I offended, but I think there is 'nothing' you can do to improve batter life without rooting...

Thanks takumibunta, got it!
That is because Sammy has included even more bloatware into Stock Android 4.3. The KNOX itself will suck a lot of battery juice.

ya, that reset only wipes data. but usually, that helps reduce the battery drain. it should drain less than before wipe.
as for downgrading... not very sure myself... still reading up, especially the KNOX part. and yes, i'm also not too happy about 4.3

this is definitely a good idea. i'm kinda disappointed that Samsung removed pop-up browser on 4.3. i really love that. so far, i found the APK from somewhere else, but its not the one i'm used to. the one I am used to (before the 4.3 update) was a resizeable one. *sigh*
there are also other little issues that i have with 4.3 update. in summary, its a lousy update. lost some nice selling points (heck, pop-up browser was a marketed feature and i'm upset that this has been removed) and the update din give us any new note3 s pen features.

My GS3 is still 100% stock, I have not even installed the T-mobile pushed update yet, I keep postponing it. So I'm 100% ICS 4.0.4 stock out of the box. I've added a bunch of widgets and stuff like that, but I have not rooted.
I had been using an iPhone(s) for the last 4+ years, dabbling with the occasional Android device, until I got the GS3 from T-mobile, and getting 4G speeds is amazing, especially after being in EDGE LIMBO on the iPhone for so long.
So the core of my question is WHY ROOT. Rooting is NOT like Jailbreaking an iPhone, since it seems like I can pretty much do 99% of anything with the phone without rooting. To me, seems that rooting only offers the AdBlock feature and WiFi tether option, then the ability to flash roms - and it seems like Flashing roms on this device can introduce problems like loss of IMEI and I've seen some reports of 4G no longer working or slowing down from the stock speeds.
Forgive me, because I know iPhone chatter gets peoples blood boiling over here, but that's what I have to compare against, my experience with rooted android devices are pretty limited.
SO: Without making this message long and boring - What are the serious advantages to rooting? And is it worth it? And at the risk of sounding like a jerk, I'm not a phone noob, just an android noob. I've had smart phones for A LONG TIME, all the way back to the Nokia Symbian phones...................
Some information if anyone cares, and just in case this info influences the information.
I'm in T-mobile USA. I've got the unlimited data/1st 2Gb at 4g plan.
Stock out of the box GS3 16gb model (32gb sdcard)
Primarily a Widnows user, but my MacBook air is dual bootcamped - but I use Windows 7 99% of the time
On my previous android phone (LG Thrill/optimus) which I rooted, the adblock thingy prevented me from viewing many of my emails which I do browse - like Newegg, Amazon, Groupon. They were all considered spam/ad's I guess?
I don't *THINK* having a Wifi hotspot would be something I'd ever use, but you never know.
My T-mobile plan was ancient until last year when I switched to a more modern plan that offered 4G instead of only t-zones, and I do not have the hotspot option - so I can't do hotspot without rooting (at least I think I can't)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of rooting, just wondering if there is any significant advantage? While I like the idea of flashing roms, most of the time I'm not a fan of beta testing stuff... like I heard CM10 was awesome, but apparently there were issues with the camera app not working 100% of the time........ that's not acceptable to me, especially since I have a new grandbaby and snap TONS of pictures now a days.
On another phone I had, which was a Samsung galaxy S 4g (small tiny t-mobile phone) and as I recall the LG thrill too, by modifying the build prop you could increase the hsdpa+ settings and get better data access at faster rates.......? Not sure if there is any way to get faster data speeds on the GS3?
Well, I guess that's enough for now............................. Any help would be appreciated.
I found jailbreaking iOS to be pointless. But feel the opposite about rooting Android. But the thing I like the most about Android doesn't even require root; flashing new firmware. Today I'm running CM10, tomorrow I'm running AOKP. Because I can. Rooting facilitates my addiction.
If you root, Android is your playground. Titanium Backup is amazing if you like to flash new firmware (I use it differently from CWM nandroids). Root Explorer gives you total control over your file system. AdFree to block ads, as you mentioned. Terminal Emulator (all the fun commands require su). Making a fully touch-based game work with an XBox360 controller.
Maybe rooting isn't right for you. But it takes two minutes and has zero downsides. Back up your IMEI before you start flashing (Terminal Emulator > su > reboot nvbackup).
With root u can control things like cpu speed, and voltage table (and if you have a custom kernel you can overclock)
You can also freeze apps you don't need, access files you normally wouldn't be able to like /etc/hosts to block ads.
You can also install some fun apps that require root like dsploit and droidsheep lol
Rooting opens up your phone to do a lot more.

It gives you more options. Such as switching between touchwiz ROMs and CM10/AOSP/AOPK. Flashing custom kernels & radios for better performance/battery life.
So you can back up your stars in bad piggies. And delete stupid system apps.
***REMOVE BLOATWARE****....main reason I rooted ..and still stock LOL
To gain full control over the android device.
With everything else said above I'd like to add "the ability to install custom members apps that do more" and other apps in the app store that require root such as call blockers which I love.
Not really. I've been back and forth between stock and pretty much every rom. Currently I got tired of f'ing with my phone and I'm on stock and I plan to stay there until CM10 is stable and has better battery life.
When I first got my s3 I to didn't see a huge gain in rooting since they came out with apps like Foxfi that allow wireless tethering without root and having the latest ICS was great but having the options too use titanium backup to backup all of my apps and their data and upload it to a cloud service and using other root apps like CPU sleeper and ROM tool box to under clock my CPU so I can save my battery rooting your phone is just for more convenient controls over the normal if you feel like you don't need to root then don't you still have a great phone

You need some punctuation in your life.
I've tried a few custom roms on this phone, don't really see a need for them though. They all have one issue or another with them. Might go back to stock to compare battery life.

Really.
Well i rooted mine because I wanted to disable a few bloatware, and also some apps in market will not fully function without root. I'm not much of a flashaholic, I've stayed with just a rooted stock..
I'm just sayin!
Flashing wicked v6 is worth rooting alone. Also for better phone performance as said earlier. But devices are finally getting good enough where you dont need to root necessarily. This is the first phone Ive had in a while where I didnt root immediately because it was very nice stock.

Rooting doesn't do anything magical, it just gives you super-user permissions. No, you don't get a cape with that.
Don't root it unless you have a reason. If you have a reason, go right on ahead as long as you understand the risks.
I only rooted my phone because I wanted to install Google Wallet. I'm rooting my TF101 because I want to try out non-stock ROMs for it.
Since I need TW's wifi calling, I'm happy with a launcher instead of a totally new ROM. I've used some apps that needed SU, but it wasn't really for anything 100% vital and I probably wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't for Google Wallet.
Don't have a reason, why bother ? Rooting doesn't do anything except get you root. It doesn't make the phone more awesomer.
The question should be "What can't you do with a rooted S3"

there are a lot of bugs when rooting. navigation doesnt work very well. sometimes not at all....you'll be stuck on searching for location for 10 mins before you decide to exit out. it has a huge homescreen wakeup issue. sometimes you need to press the home button 4 times to wake up the phone. battery life is a bit better
there is no reason to root unless you get bored of how your phone looks. ive flashed almost every rom and their basically the same.
to sum it all up......if you want themes, make your phone look cool. have the phone run not as smooth then go ahead and root it.
my suggestion is root your phone install a custom rom for a week to see how you like it. you can always unroot it and go back to stock
If you have to ask you probably should just stay stock. Root comes with a lot of responsibility.

I used to have serious gps issues with a lot of ROMs on my SG2, but haven't encountered any yet with my SG3. No lock screen issues, and but to answer the man's question. What can you do with root? Whatever the f***k you want! Lol. Seriously though do some research. I just rooted my first phone a few months ago and now it's like an obsession trying out new ROMs, themes, and trying all kinds of stuff. It definitely comes with its dangers though. You really gotta read carefully and tread lightly. Hard Bricking your shiny new super expensive toy be a tragedy. Luckily I've never experienced that but with plenty of soft bricks (more than I'd care to admit) under my belt I will say if your not too great at trouble shooting then really think about if it's for you. As far as technical knowledge, I had none really. Rooted my SG2 2 weeks after I got it, and it was the very first android phone I had even ever used. There have been plenty of nights too where I spent half the night trying to fix my soft bricks, lol. Overall though I'm super glad I did root. Opened up a whole new past time for me, and the technological knowledge I'm gaining is just another skill to add to my market value. Hope that big ramble helps I some way at least

I'm not going to lie, I like knowing that when my s3 is over clocked, its faster than everyone else's around me but truth is, under clocking to 1.2ghz the phone will still be speedy and as time goes on you can over clock to get good performance from non Samsung supported ROMs. I rooted because I like tweaking phones. And I like aosp. So I have a custom tw ROM and a aosp to satisfy my needs. Also having tweaks too like gwallet, sound mods, edit build.prop and other things.

Rooting does not impair any functions of the phone, nor does it cause hardware buttons to be unresponsive when pressed while the screen is off. The term "root" (when referring to Android) is perhaps the most misused term on the internet. Many people know exactly what root is, but few people correct someone when they misuse the term. This leads to a massive spread of misinformation that's impossible to stop.

Once you root your phone, you can back up all your apps as well as the data within the apps. If you need to factory reset your phone, then all your data is there. You can also:
1. Change your boot screen to please your taste.
2. Get Tethering going for free.
3. Add Google Wallet and pay for things just by swiping your phone onthe register (where available).
4. Change the way your Gallery/Camera looks.
5. Back up your entire ROM just the way you like it.
6. Tweak your phone's setting in more ways I could mention (Like changing the position/color of the clock, battery, and other icons.
7. Try different modems to see which one works best in your area.
8. Many other things Imay have forgotten.
You'll be able to use your phone the way its meant to be used.

well worth it if you just want to extend your battery life. try to JB Frost rom.
What are the cons for flashing a custom rom?
For an example:
Does it mess with your phone if you flash a lot?
Those sort of questions!
ALSO, on my last phone, the HTC amaze, I used flash custom roms and over time it would just have an issue after issue. It kept rebooting randomly and it was just crazy.
Because of that problem, I actually moved to this phone! I'm afraid that the same problem will occur if I flash custom roms again... This phone was expensive compared to my previous phone and plus my mom would kill me if it starts having problems.
OR
Is it possible for me to stay with the stock rom and just install most of the mods from custom roms? If I could find them, but that'll be time consuming and I might mess up since I know nothing of developing and mods, just flashing
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Everything is a CON if you don't have root access. LOL
You will not be able to flash hardly any mods, themes or any other really
useful apps not even rom manager or titanium backup without root access.
Both of which are now a very basic app since they have become so useful.
Without ROOT your phone will be LOCKED and crippled into only being able
to use and install those apps at the playstore which do not require root.
99.9% of any mods, themes or anything else found in these custom roms will
not be possible to use, install or flash without having root access.
There is only one reason I can think of why some people don't want to root their phones and that is they are simply
satisfied with their phones and don't want to change anything in it, but those people don't really belong here in XDA.
Believe it or not but XDA was intended for those people who like to have endless possibilities, features, functions and
modifications so they can enjoy their phones to the fullest extent rather than simply having a $650 crippled stock phone.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

if want to use custom roms and install the mods, you have to have root access. if it's a warranty issue, even if you flash a custom rom without having root access, that's still voiding your warranty because i changes the samsung official to custom in download mode. so, you have to chose one side. no root, no mods, no custom roms, but having a warranty if something goes wrong, or root, mods, custom roms, but no warranty. you can always revert back to full stock without root for warranty issues, but it's not that easy if you aren't that familiar with phones and rooting. before triangle away, what i would do to go to full stock without root for warranty issues, was that i went to samsung kies. and i clicked on emergency firmware recovery, and i put my model number of phone (SGH-M919) then, my serial number of the phone, and then, i plugged the phone in, and booted into recovery, and i went back to full stock and could return it.
The only cons I've found so far is finding which ROM I want to use as a daily driver...

full wipe if you're flashing roms, you dont have to if you restore. it does it for you, and i've done restores without wiping anything without any immediate or long term hiccups
Only real cons of custom Roms is that in some circumstances there may be a couple things that aren't quite as stable as being stock would be, but a lot of those issues are taken care of if you do a full wipe before flashing a new rom. Just follow the OP instructions, and you're usually good to go. I've used Wicked V3 and Darthstalker S4 V3 with no issues at all. Just read through the threads, and you'll be able to get somewhat of a consensus on what is and isn't working properly in a Rom.
The biggest con of rooting and flashing custom roms is that everyone will see how super awesome your phone is and want to be just like you. People will form fan clubs to celebrate your greatness. Women will throw themselves at you becase rooted phones scream "Alpha male". You will have to do occasional autograph appearances and ribbon cutting ceremonies for various business and park openings as a result.
After a while all the added responcibility and living in the public spotlight might start to wear you down. That's the biggest con.
But due to your increased popularity you will get more phone calls and text messages. And every time you answer one you will do it on your rooted phone and you will be reminded of how much cooler you are than everyone else because of the nifty mod you flashed earlier that day:good:, and you will remember that it's all worth it.
Also you get to change the color of the clock and stuff. So that's super cool. :good:

Holy crap, I need whatever app it is that YOU use.
I've read tons of issues with KitKat on the Note 3. People have been complaining about:
1) Battery drains
2) Constant restarts
3) Issues with WiFi calling
4) Trouble getting flash to work
5) Problems with non-Samsung Window Cases
6) Major issues getting non-OEM apps to write to the SD Card
7) Changes to the bootloader making it impossible to revert back to Jellybean if you wanted to
With all that known what are the ADVANATGES of updating? I read the font is different and you get full screen art on the lock screen for the music player. Why would somone update to KitKat when you lose so much and gain so little?
I agree kitkat is a sellout compared to jellybean.

I've only had issues with #1.
#4, flash, I'm assuming you're talking that antiquated, discontinued web crap by adobe. Not an issue or concern for me.
2,3 I've not had issues with.
5? I don't have any like that, but supposedly there's a fix if you're rooted.
6, if you're rooted, there's a very simple fix.
7, yeah but don't care.
Advantages... Cause it's there. it's the latest and greatest... LOL, ok, so it's not a real advantage I guess.
I have had no issues with my Note 3 except for #6, which is a Google thing...
My note 3 came with KK out of the box, tho. Dunno if that makes a difference.
Question about #6. Is that like, if you have a 3rd party Camera app...it won't save the pics to the external SD? Like there is an option in the app...but it just won't save? Also, it is a KK on Note 3 problem?
OP is misleading. Only the Jizzer kitkat roms are sucky. CM, BeanStalk, GE and others are fine - no excess battery drain, full signal, no random reboots, no Samsung crapware all over the place. KitKat is a huge success aside from those Samsung TW abominations.

Tell those people complaining on the T-Mobile Forums that took and installed the OTA KitKat upgrade that their issues are just in their heads. If you have to root your phone to gain back functionality that was on the phone before you updated then the update is horrible. They are calling it the KitKat virus. But I am sure they are just crazy. Take two non-rooted phones. One on Jelly Bean one on KitKat. Which one will let your third party apps write to the sd card and which one will not. Now tell me which version of Android is better.
There are no advantages. At times you could say perhaps it's more secure to avoid viruses. But that's about it. It's junk.
...As I was just about to go kk...upon reading numerous posts all throughout....there are no practical advantages Lol. Why why why release such a crap update? At least make it worth while. What a waste of such a great name kk on a useless release.

Um, he mentioned AOSP ROMs as being huge successes. KitKat is amazing when it comes to AOSP, and TW as always is ****. The issues aren't in their heads, they're real, but it's not hard to fix it.

CM/AOSP KitKat roms don't have the issues you're complaining about. OTA Samsung crapware is still Samsung crapware. Reading comprehension ftw.

I am specifically talking about unrooted unmodified Jelly bean on the Note seeing how you don't have to do anything to enable the ability to write to the sd card on a stock note 3 where you do on the a stock kitkat note 3. Allow me to quote myself:

If you have to root the phone and modifiy it to get back functionality lost that is a problem. Sounds like you need some reading comprehension yourself. :good:
KitKat was more of a prank for Note 3 owners than an upgrade.
Reduced functionality, zero benefit.

Download Total Commander and it will allow you to write/rename to the SD Card.
How can us kitkat users go back to the previous version? I'd like to have vpn working again plus i'd like to not have tethering use up my limited tethering data.
I am rooted right now and adjusting the dun string settings.db doesn't fix it. Whenever i tether with another device even using another phone or googlebots it still goes up and data is counted as mobile hotspot usage.
15% faster

I'm not trying to be a jerk either but I think you're confusing forums: this is Q&A help/troubleshooting forum, title says nothing about mods, there are separate forums for Android development and mods, so he is in the right place and you're completely missing the point, which is: why does he have to root the phone just to get back the functionality he had before upgrade. I'm not against rooting and modding, I'm rooted myself, but the fact is Google messed KK big time for no reason. Some people, myself among them, choose Note 3 for its SD as one of selling points and frankly I could not care less about even 15 % speed increase (like Note 3 wasn't fast enough), if I couldn't use extra memory. Another problem with KK is that rooting without tripping Knox is much more difficult now and we are still not clear what tripping Knox means as far as warranty goes. Is Android becoming another Crapple and everybody will need to wait for jailbreak to actually use their phone to it's potential?

Thank you Pete my sentiments exactly! I was also curious what KK does that actually IMPROVES the user experience. Taking away SD Card access doesn't seem to accompllish that goal so I was wondering if I was missing something. I appreciate everyones imput.
I've asked this a number of times, but I like to check back once in a while....
I am currently JB rooted stock and have chosen to not upgrade or even flash another ROM. I'm 0x0 but I'm willing to trip for a number of reasons...
Data goes in and out,
battery life is diminishing,
Buggy
Want a change
So should I upgrade to 4.4? Or now I see there's an update to KK?
I'm most likely jumping to the g3 once it launches cuz I have some screen displacement in one corner of my screen cuz tech21 cases blow. So idk if I'll even get around to it.... Convince me please

Current KitKat is 4.4.2, with 4.4.3 supposed to come before 4.4.4 is released for the phone later this summer.
My brother in law just got 4.4.4 on his Nexus 5 a few days ago.

I upgraded a long time ago and have not regretted it. You gain many features like Download booster (from Galaxy S5), Kid mode, multiple users, and the new voice over LTE (High Definition). You also gain a new, more efficient modem on your phone (In my experience). You don't even have to blow your Knox e-fuse anymore. Here is what I did.
I upgraded to version 4.4.2 by downloading n900TUVUDNF1 and flashing through Odin. Since it is stock, you will not trip Knox. It will remain 0x0.
Then root using Towelroot from here --> http://towelroot.com/ .It is a simple one click root app that will preserve Knox 0x0 as well and takes less than 30 seconds.
Then, once rooted, update your SuperUser Binaries through the playstore and you can install Wanam Xposed framework from which you can quickly and effortlessly tweak hundreds of settings in your phone. It's a win-win situation.
You can also flash the Sdcard file fix or gain access to your SD card functions though Xposed changes.
Don't think about it twice. It's like giving your phone a much needed transfusion which turns it into a completely different device with upgraded capabilities. If you ever decide to sell your phone, just flash unrooted stock back and you are set. Intact Knox 0x0 and it's back to being like new.
If you need VPN, no. There are serious bugs introduced in 4.4 that still aren't fixed in 4.4.4. Selective routing does not work, period, as well as some other bugs. It cripples Android as a VPN business tool. I and a lot of others are ticked. Lots of info via Google searches on this subject.

If you're going to get a G3 I wouldn't update. Your note 3 might be worth more being in 4.3 since currently there is no way to go back if you upgrade to KK. There is no benifit to 4.4.2 IMO and if you read there are more complaints on it. I still get data drops or disconnects even though it says I have signal. Toggling airplane mode on and off brings my connection back.

Thank you for this information! I used Open VPN and Tunnel Bear heavily. Upgrading to KK will make me sell this phone if VPN no longer works!
One link on the VPN bugs:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62714#c140
What is really astonishing is that a Goog rep got into the conversation saying they knew of the problems, but here we are at 4.4.4 and they're still unfixed. The VPN subsystem doesn't even properly update iptables on selective connections! Ridiculous.
