I didnt really like how the microusb fits into the port at an angle and was also interested in how the new nexus 7 has qi wireless charging capabilities so i looked into the technology and found that it can be added easily to the HDX without any modifications or warranty voids. I simply plugged the receiver into my HDX and taped it to the back of my tablet. Than i place my MoKo case back on my tablet and to my amazement it was able to charge through the case. It charges somewhat slower than my 2 amp charger directly connected, which is expected. I am more than happy with the results though. If anyone wants pictures just let me know!

its not even noticeable to me. if you dont use a case then this probably would be very noticeable. Theres no way i would pay $159 for this tablet and not put a screen protector and case on it straight out of box.

Do you do all your file transfers by wifi then?
usually yes. if the file isnt large i will use ES file explorer. if the file is large i can always unplug the qi charging receiver usb from the port and plug in the data usb. I do all my movie streaming via my NAS server/networked computers and BSplayer app. BSplayer plays any media file i throw at it rather local or networked.
So it's pretty thin, eh? Wonder if it affects the magnet-sticky Origami case? Hmmm... I need my USB port on my phone for my nav dock, but I *can* try the wireless for the Kindle...
It's a buck cheaper on Amazon with shipping, BTW.

I wanted to be sure it wasnt coming from china so I ordered from ebay.
But it Blocks the USB Port...???
Stupid question / comment deleted. Didn't see the pictures.
Thanks for doing the "research and testing" for us, jeffsrawr... I just jumped on the bandwagon to do the same to our brand new HDX 8.9... your pictures and links were VERY helpful!
Is there any bulge in the back of the case, I'm just wondering if its at all noticeable that the qi reciever is stuck on the back whilst it has the case on.

If it's the Origami case you wont' even notice as that has a hard rear shell.

its super thin... like a business card thickness. i sold off my hdx because i got tired of the amazon fire os menu crap on the side. im glad i sold it as now the root is broken with the automatic update. it will be a great device once the bootloader is cracked... thats if it ever is cracked. hdx was fastest tablet i have tried but nexus 7 just has better customization and and overall experience for me.
i just moved the qi charger pad over to the nexus 7 and it works great on it too. (its 2012 version without qi built in)

The kindle menu really annoyed me aswell, luckily there is a way to remove it. https://plus.google.com/106179306926528043289/posts/3HyS7rVWEp5
The app is called GMD autohide soft keys https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys. Also there are various ways to block updates for kindle OS until the new ones are rooted.
Just some further info. I got an iBlason case for our HDX 8.9, and the wireless charger is just a tiny bit out of range to work with the thick-ish case. Too bad, as I can't charge through the case, but the wireless takes priority, so that's staying on. Our old tablet had many issues with the charge port, so keeping the port from getting worn is the bigger priority for me. Thanks again for the idea on getting this to work... I may have to do this with more devices in the future
Question for others who have done this - does your tablet make noises (squealing and clicking) when charging wirelessly like this? When the battery is low, it's louder, so I don't notice this very often, but I was just wondering. Maybe it has to do with the type of wireless charger or something?
I experienced no noises whatsoever.
What's the difference in charge speed compared to cable? About half? More than half?
Hi,

Thread is 18 months old; doubt you will get a response from an OP. The HDX does not have an embedded Qi receiver. You'd need to use something like this which still utilizes the micro USB port. It that's your problem wireless charging won't help.
Yes, sorry for the lack of reply... didn't see this post. Like Davey126 said, you need a wireless charging receiver which connects to the USB port. If your existing port isn't working, then this probably won't work either.
I taped mine to the back of the tablet, similar to what is shown here: https://community.smartthings.com/t/faq-affordable-hardware-dashboard/36044 (second-to-last picture in the article). I did this proactively since I have had tablets before that broke the USB connection, so I did this from day-1 to ensure the port wouldn't wear-out with use... and it's been working great.
I don't have charge timing information, sorry... it's actually my wife's tablet, and she only charges it when needed and usually overnight. Honestly, due to the large battery in the HDX 8.9, it doesn't seem to need charging very often, which is great...

Hey all,
This is my first post here.
Has any of you bought either of those products? They look really stylish and useful (specially the desk dock, which doubles as a USB hub and a 8 in 1 card reader).
Obviously, I can't post links yet, but you can look them up at MobileFun.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk. They are not really expensive either (around 15 pounds + shipping).
So, what are your thoughts on those products?
Many reviews i read (for the Dash Genie) said it worked well until the car got hot - then the phone slid on the tacky surface, and there was residue left on the phone. Sometimes a ring left on the dash.
Welcome to xda! Item looks useful. I wish samsung would expand their accessory line for their phones. I'd love a great windshield mount or dash mount/charger.

I'm actually pretty interested in the Desk Genie after reading about it but now you got me rethinking it. I assume you tried without a case on? I have the Amzer TPU case, which is fairly rubbery and grippy, so I wonder if that would allow the phone to stick to the surface better?
Any chance you can experiment with that if you have a TPU case lying around? Or maybe your general observations of if a TPU case would make a difference?
Also, since I assume the Desk Genie connects to the computer to charge, I assume that charging would take a bit longer due to the fact that you aren't using AC power? I assume you can still connect it to the AC adapter as that uses USB too, but then the USB ports on the side of the dock would be useless.

Thanks for the info. Do you use any type of case?
Only the "case" I made in my signature! I've tried everything to get it to stick to the aluminum battery cover, and it just won't do it, maybe it would work with certain cases, but if you're a anti-case person like me, then this won't work for you....
Great accesory!
So, I bought the Desk Genie, have been using it for about a week and I love it!
Contrary to the previous poster, I've had no problem whatsoever with it holding my phone, both in portrait and landscape mode. It even holds it with the otterbox commuter case on!
The product is very stylish and useful. Both USB ports work great and the card reader accepts Micro SD cards without adapters (I haven't run any speed tests).
It comes a mini USB-USB cable with which you connect the DG to the computer via a port in the back, and a power cable with which you charge the phone using one of the 8 provided plugs.
The phone recognizes it as charging via AC power! I found that very interesting, given that the DG is powered by the computer USB port.
All in all, I fully recommend this item. Wish I'd bought it sooner.

This means the data pins are shorted, just like in a samsung charger. Can you connect to mass storage with this dock?
Just thought that this feature has been ignored by websites and even Samsung. Seeing the specs list, I concluded that HDMI out was not supported by Galaxy Nexus.
Then I stumbled upon Modaco, and in their review they did mention this functionality.
I bought a cheap knock off MHL cable from the market, and viola! It works perfectly. I am just curious as to why this feature was not announced and anyone failed to cover it.

I agree with you that most websites have neglected to mention this function but it is pretty standard on new device releases now and in the Galaxy Nexus quick start guide it has a diagram of the phone with an arrow to the charging port the says Multifunction Jack. How is the quality of the picture?

Picture quality is superb.
One disadvantage is that the phone loses PORTRAIT mode while connected. The launcher becomes a landscape which is quite attractive. But full-screen portrait games run at a 90 degree angle.

I'm using a samsung gs2 one, you really get to see how high res the ui really is. The only thing is the density, It would be awesome if there was a "non root" way to put it into tablet mode.
Its even better with a bluetooth mouse connected
i got one of the cheap ones of ebay for mine and the pictures perfect on full HD stuff!
One problem i am having though is that now and then the screen will go black and loose sound for a second, it can happen a few times a minute or not at all for 5 mins or so but it keeps happening. Anyone else experiencing this?
I've not had chance to test on another TV yet to see if its something on there effecting it or if its the fact i got the cheapo MHL and not the Samsung one.
I did not experience it, but I hardly tried it for a few minutes.
The 'cheapo' cable I bought still ended up costing around 30 USD, so its cheap only by comparison. I strongly believe that it should be coming free inside the box since the functionality is there in the handset.
A few years ago those Nokia sets came with the TV out cable in the box. These phones cost almost twice that and yet.... There is a worrying trend to charge for peripherals - we already see wafer thin batteries in phones and then manufacturers rolling out expensive extended batteries. Next thing we know, they will be charging for chargers and headphones too.
Also would it kill Sammy if they'd just used a simple Micro-to-full HDMI cable without this MHL BS. it is a messy set up resulting in an explosion of cables under your telly, and since three sockets are involved, unreliable too.
Moto uses just a simple micro HDMI port in their sets. How hard can that be for Sammy or HTC to implement?
I brought my cheapo one for £6 on eBay, very good picture and sound, had no blackouts yet.
Hi can you share link and photo of the mhl cable that you bought?
Thanks.

Welcome to nexus. Lol. What's wrong with mhl? Micro hdmi port has its limitations too but it does have the advantage of simple mirroring without extra power being needed. Other than that advantage a messy explosion of cables is still needed to do anything serious.

1 vs 3 cables. Its all about practicality - it's irritating for me because in these days of batteries lasting barely one day, the charger is usually in the bedroom for overnight charging.
Although I did find a workaround - MicroUSB cable off the TV's USB port takes care of the charging side of MHL quite nicely . Clever me.
Also, MHL seems to be a mixed blessing for portrait apps. In HDMI mirroring the display at least switches to portrait when there is a full screen portrait game running. No such luck here. My Flick Golf looks like Angry Birds with MHL!

Completely unrelated: If someone could hack this into Android x86 as a feature, I would install it on my netbook in an instant.
I bought some random $12 MHL adaptor on eBay and while it works the reliablity isn't very great. When I plug my GN in sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it works instantly. Sometimes it works perfectly fine sometime it changes between analog looking static and black intermittently. If you're going to buy one I think you should just buy it retail as buying 2 on eBay (Assuming you get a bad one the first time like I seem to have) it will cost you the same as getting it retail.

what is the HDMI out on the gnexus like, is it basically HDMI mirroring, or are you taken into some mode (like the atrix's webtop)

Are you experiencing the phone losing battery even though it is charging? e.g. it kills more power than the USB can provide? Has anyone tried the monoprice cable with regards to this? Thanks guys.
Does using an MHL to HDMI adapter use any additional resources (RAM/CPU/GPU/etc)? I'd imagine it does since it mirrors, outputting to two sources at once (screen on the GN and the output jack). I ask this because the reason I bought one, well 90% of the reason anyway, was to use it for PSX and N64 emulators with a PS3 dual shock controller. I know those put a strain on the system in and of themselves, but it seems like they work even less well when using the MHL to HDMI adapter. There is pretty bad lag with some games, but others are okay (Mario Kart 64 was pretty bad, while F-Zero X seemed to be perfect). PSX is the same way, Intelligent Qube works well but Metal Gear Solid is almost unplayable. But when I don't use the adapter and just play it on the phone it's not as bad. The audio is choppy sometimes but game play is still smooth. Not so much the case when using the adapter...
No lag when using SNES emulator, so it's probably just the added resources needed for the more advanced emulators. Still, kind of baffling that its mostly fine without the adapter and not so fine with it.
Hi All,
I was searching for USB Dock for Note and found THIS on eBay.
for only $6.78 + Free Shipping
I saw many of THE SAME docks going for $19.99 - $24.99 on eBay and Amazon,So this is definitely a good Deal IMO.
One Another Good thing is Economy International Shipping is also cheap on this.
only $1.99 to INDIA in my case. So gifted one to my buddy!!!
I dont know if I plug in MHL cable in back and use it as HDMI Dock
That would be awesome
-----------------------------------------------What Works and What Dose not------------------------------------------------
1. MHL Cable : NO (You can not connect MHL cable behind the Dock to do HDMI out )
2. Data X'fer : YES (You can simply attach your data cable to Computer to Transfer files to/from Phone)
3. USB OTG : ??? (Dont know why anybody would do this but i will check it tonight see if it works!)

Thnx.
I ordered one of these to station on my bedside cabinet, so my note would act as a nice alarm clock. The unit is reasonably solid, but feels a little unstable out of the box (it wants to tip over backwards if placed on a less than solid surface, e.g. carpet)). However, once you plug your power cable into it this seems to help with the stability due to the location of the socket.
The unit itself has a very subtle light on the top, like a thin white crescent, to show when the unit is powered, and the contour of the aperture fits the Note's body perfectly. In fact, it holds it incredibly tightly, so I have no risk of accidentally knocking the note out of the cradle during a particularly robust "bedroom gymnastics" session with Mrs RTR, if you get my drift.
All in all, I'm more than happy with mine.
I tried a few different docks, but ultimately decided to go dock-free, simply because these docks are pretty much only usable with the Note naked, whereas I prefer leaving my Note in its case 24-7.

I've been using my phone as an alarm clock for a long time now and I can finally see the dang thing without picking it up now. Does anyone know or have experience with the other wireless charging solutions out there know how fast this charges a device?
Eh, unimpressed. Judging by Google's accessory prices this thing will run around $60.

Most cases work just fine unless you have an extra thick one. With my nexus 4 it charges at about 70 to 80% of the regular charger speed.

That's actually a very good estimate, the efficiency of these chargers are generally around 75%.

This is a bad misconception about wireless charging. Yes these were factors with the N4, which was very poor in regards to wireless charging.
The Lumia 920 however charged wirelessly without any additional heat and the pad made no noise or leds. It was a fantastic experience. It is very convenient when your going to bed/waking up in the dark not to have to deal with Micro USB. However when I purchased the N4 I was extremely disappointed with the wireless charging and went back to USB, I am hoping the N5 has improved in this regard. Another reason I WON'T be buying one of the cheap QI chargers.

You can use the lumia charger with the nexus 5. The only reason i would get the nexus pad is because of the magnets. The nexus pad should get the phone aligned perfectly.
I'm looking forward to seeing this made available to buy. As i'm in no immediate rush, it will be going on my christmas list fo sho!
Looks like this is just Not Happening?
The nokia wireless charging plate is on sale at AT&T for $25: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/accessories/chargers/sku6290260.html#fbid=W0UhtP5C8zH
I ordered one to keep at my desk, and since they're in stock at stores nearby I chose in-store pickup (no shipping fee).
And it does work with the Nexus 5: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/124...-5-works-with-a-nokia-wireless-charging-plate
I found a favorite wireless charger on Google, because I haven't used it before, so I don't have any experience. I don't know if anyone here knows if this wireless is good. You can search azdome QI-NM80 on Google and help me judge. Thanks very much!

I picked up a Samsung Convertible pad from Amazon for $29. It was a Amazon Store return and was marked as like new. There wasn't a mark on it and still had the protective plastic film on it. I love it and it charges fine through my Otterbox case. It may be worth looking at the pre-owned original chargers that Amazon sells.
I got the official charger for S9/S9+ from Samsung (Wireless Qi Fast Charge Standing Samsung EP-N5100) and it's great. It has a cooler included in case of overheating, while charging (fast or not, the phone will get hotter than charging through cable). Phone will charge slower than doing it through cable (not by much), due to some part of the energy that it's transformed into heat, so the cooler is a good idea.
I fail to see the difference between this and the S8/S8+ and S7/S7 Edge Qi chargers.
I use the Anker Fast Wireless charger downstairs for when I want a quick top up. It works great with the S9 - low profile and 100% reliable. http://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KJL4XNY/
On my bedside table I have an Elephas wireless charging stand - this one charges at normal speed, better for an overnight charge.
I love wireless charging and really missed it when I have a Pixel 2. It was one reason I moved to the S9.
