Hi,
Is there an alternative method of navigating on the Note 10.1 2014? The hard wired back and home buttons are hard to get used to (came from N10 which had soft back and home buttons that automatically oriented themselves to the screen layout.)
I use taskarou , an app in the play store, to give myself soft buttons on both the bottom and right sides. You swipe from the edge and they appear, then disappear upon release. The way the app is set up initially is way too confusing for me, with multiple sub menus, but now that I have just back, recents and home it is much better. There is no way to get the menu bytton without root on any app like this, but overall I haven't missed it to much.

I purchased an Android bluetooth keyboard made by Motorola that has all of the Android buttons (home, menu, Gmail, messaging, internet etc..) but only about half of them will control the Tab (home, volume, back, and internet). Does anyone know of a way to program the buttons to the correct commands?

It's a bit involved (you need to be rooted, be able to edit some system files, ...) but maybe this link can get you started: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336114 ?
I have the same keyboard. I had to follow the directions in the post above to customize a couple of the keys.
However, the keys at the top that launch applications just repeat search key combos. for instance, the contacts key produces "search+c". You can change what app is associated with "search+c" in the quick launch settings menu under "Applications". I have contacts bring up google talk instead of the contacts up.
Hey guys. I have this same keyboard and I have a small problem... I think. When the case is closed with the keyboard and tab inside it seems that the rubber pieces are pressing pretty hard on the screen. I have a screen protecter on my tab, and when I open the case back up, the rubber pieces leave imprints on the screen. Does anyone know if there is a way to relieve some of the pressure that the case is putting on my screen? Is anyone else having this problem? Thanks guys. Merry Christmas!

Hello,
I've been using my new note 2 for two weeks now.. and I like it so much
I also used sgs2 and 3 before.
I'm not new to android.. I flashed roms, know every single setting in the device, rooted my sgs2 and tried lots of apps to customize them.
Regarding my issue, I like to set my device to none screen security because I always manually lock it with a press on the lock screen button after I do whatever I want to do with it, and to unlock I always press Home button to get back to where I was immediately without the need to swipe the lock screen.
The problem is when I lock it and there is an app running and then press the home button the screen goes to home default screen and do not just unlock the screen and keep it there where I was last, this was not the case with my sgs2 or sgs3.
If I press the lock screen button instead it does what I want but I prefer to use home button because its much easier.
Its not a big issue but its annoying sometimes because sometimes I get popup notification windows while the phone is locked (whatsapp for example) and I press the home button to see it and instead of just turning on the screen to see the window it goes back to home screen and the popup is gone, or in cases where I'am writing an email or reading something and meanwhile talking to somebody, if the screen gets locked, If I press the home button everything is gone. So I have to switch tasks to open my activity again.
I don't know if this is a jellybean issue or hardware (homebutton).
I know its not a big deal but I would appreciate if somebody can help get around this

It seems to be a jellybean feature no way around unless a mod comes out...
All jellybean roms in Note I had this feature and i remember seeing this thing on SGS III jellybean too
Just install the S Voice app , "voicetalk_NLI.apk".
In S Voice, set "double click active S Voice" will fix the issue.
This actually worked! Thanks
But the problem is that i use another app (home2) to control home button which makes me able to control what app runs when double clicking home or even use a combination of home with back or menu.
Its a very good app if you want to try it.
This leaves me with trying to deal with my original issue tho or just return to old factory setting

edit. There's one slight problem, now it lags a bit to return back to the home screen..
Hello, n00b here!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-T989 T-Mobile), that has four 'hard softkeys', that is, touchbuttons (menu, home, back, search) outside the display area [no physical clicky Home button], and can't for the life of me, or with bad google-fu, figure out how to make the Home button take me right back to the home screen (launcher). When I press it once I just get a haptic 'bzz', and nothing at all happens. When I double-click it, as I have set in the settings, it goes to Task Switcher, from where I then can reach the home screen by tapping outside the miniaturized windows of running apps.
But, how to I make a single click go directly to the home screen?
Ideally I'd like to have the four buttons be menu=menu, home=homescreen, back=back, search=taskswitcher. Installing a specific app for it (that preferably won't eat up screen real estate with on-display softkeys), another launcher, another Settings app etc, is all okay by me as long as it fixes this major nag.
I don't get to choose other than a preset list in Settings, though. :/
System info is SAMSUNG-SGH-T989, CyanogenMod 11-20140506-NIGHTLY-hercules, Kernel 3.0.101-DIABLO-3.3, launcher Trebuchet 1.0.
(As a little gripe and boo, CM-11 on the Kindle Fire worked wonderfully, where the three on-display softkeys for taskswitch/home/back did just what I wanted them to. I can't see any reason why a JB'd phone would be unable to remap the keys to a select very few options just because they happen to be outside the actual display area. Especially as Home doesn't lead to the Home Screen. :/ )
Tons of grapefruitgrateful for any help here!
-Henrik
Problem solved, good enough for me - installing Hellybean and getting rid of all KitKat related junk.
Suddenly the phone works like it's supposed to, whee!

SGH-T989 Galaxy S II. Home keys aren't working. Sent phone in for charging port repairs. Sent phone back to replace touch keypad flex cable. Buttons have worked intermittently since. They also light up intermittently. I was hoping this was software related. Kies says the firmware is the latest. Any suggestions? The phone is for my 10yr old. Don't really want to invest in something new for her right now, just for games!

I've had an opportunity to play with a display model of the Note Edge recently and ultimately decided to buy one. It'll arrive on Tuesday.
The one thing that I really disliked (coming from a Note2) - is the awkward placement of the Note Edge's power button. So I was wondering if there'd be a way to add a soft power button to the edge/ticker screen -
I found a couple of options to play with which I've linked below.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.kixx.tool.offwidget
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.suriv.suscreen
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.android.smartscreenonlite
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/wakeup-turns-on-your-screen-without-the-power-button/
That mostly addresses the 'off' part but 'on' looks relegated to being triggered by motion or the proximity sensor (because why would you want a 'screen on' app/button on any other phone - because the screen is... off).
I didn't play extensively with the Edge but if the edge/ticker screen is always on (or in a stand-by clock mode) then can someone make something that detects a swipe down and wakes the main screen? Or swipes to a shortcut that wakes the main screen?

Hey! Glad you decided to join us edge users! About your question I'm personally using screen off and lock. I've had no problems and its working beautifully. Got it on my list of apps on the edge and even with the edge on just using it to control my music i click the button for it to turn off the screen and it does just that. It has some nice features as far as animations which i like. As far as the other apps I haven't tried them yet. Hope this helps. Have a good day
easy to do, already sorta included..... with screen off swipe up/down(one motion, do not lift finger between) on the edge screen the edge clock will activate, then swipe from right to left to pull up the app shortcuts cocktail, tap any app in the list and it will wake the main screen and app will be launched and waiting behind lock screen

Oh, sweet. Thanks for this! I kept accidentally activating that and couldn't figure out what I was doing. Heh. I love this phone, I keep finding new things.
The easiest way around the poor power button placement is just to buy the official case so it turns on and off when you open and close the case. It really should of just came with the phone. They belong together. I bought it. It really is like a piece of the phone.

I use greenify. I long press the home button and it hibernates and turns off the screen. I've found it so much nicer than trying to mess with the power button location.

Screen off and lock has this capability add well.
I don't mind having the power button on top, it's the switched back button and last used buttons I still can't get used to. Oh and I don't like how the home key doesn't respond to the pen without press, fail.
Lately I've set GMD gesture control to double tap for screen off. Just have to blacklist a few apps (like calculator) and keyboard where a rapid set of taps will shut screen off when you are trying to do something else. Would be nice if there was a double tap to turn screen on! Some phones can do this. But, for now, I'm fine with just pressing home button for that.
I purchased a new Nexus 7 (2013) a couple of weeks ago, and if I could return it, I would. I have a couple of user issues I just hate. I've been searching around for solutions, and I think there may be some, but I'm new to all of this, and I need some help and advise.
My first issue, and this is huge for me, is waking the tablet up. I primarily use the tablet to control my music server (Bubble DS Next). I'm frequently on the tablet while listening, but not always. The problem is that when the tablet sleeps, I have to use the power button to wake it up. I find the power button difficult to press, and it's just a pain. I have a Samsung S5 phone, and I love the physical home button for waking up the phone. I wish the Nexus 7 had the same button. I saw where someone was able to double tap the screen to wake up the Nexus 7. Is this part of some custom ROM? How could I get this feature?
My second issue relates to the on screen back, home, and apps buttons. I HATE that the home button is right below the space bar where I constantly seem to hit it while typing. I solved this issue while browsing the internet by using Dolphin as a browser in full screen mode. Is there a way to always hide these buttons unless you swipe up from the bottom?
I'm prepared to unlock and root the tablet, but I want to be certain I'm doing it for the right reasons. I'm not a power user of any kind, so other than wanting these 2 fixes, I'm fine with everything else about the tablet.
Thanks.

I decided since I can't return the thing, I might as well jump in and make it work better. I unlocked, rooted, TWRP'd, and flashed ElementalX ROM for Lollipop. I'm also using APEX Launcher mostly to get the tablet UI. At least I got the double tap to wake function now.
Thanks
