viewing angles n front cam - Sony Xperia ZL

hey are the viewing angles of this phone that bad bcoz i m going to buy this phone,i m using xperia m and i dont notice the contrast problems in it so are they good in comparison to m?and is the front cam placement really that akward and does the position of front cam really matter?plz rly i want to buy this phone!!!

Well the viewing angles are not the best, that's true. But why would you ever look at your phone from a weird angle? I like the display and have no complains.
Regarding the front cam, I don't really use it and if I do then in landscape, then the camera is in a very good spot I'd say.

Unless your trying to watch videos with several other people, the viewing angles are fine. Honestly, I never use the front cam... I can see that if you were trying to actually use your screen right handed while using the phone, it might be an issue... dunno.
It's reasonably fast... it does heat up if you use a significant amount of cpu/gpu horsepower while playing games.
Some folks have had issues with premature battery failure/shutdown...
The screen isn't quite as vivid as an amoled screen (think Samsung s4).
The camera takes decent daytime shots, but kind of falls off for low light shots.
Which carrier are you planning to use it with?

Color reproduction seems decent... It's kind of like comparing a Plasma to an LED backlit LCD display... I think you get deeper blacks with AMOLED vs what I'd classify as more of a dark grey/light black on this...
Color's look great when you have contrast and brightness turned up.
I came from a Samsung Galaxy S3 (which my wife now uses)... This is faster... the display looks pretty good... it's really sharp... it's a pretty impressive screen and if I hadn't ever had an AMOLED screen on my Galaxy S3, I'd have thought this was exceptionally awesome... it's pretty good. I should re-lock my boot loader and see if the bravia engine really does make things look better again...

U mean colour reproduction is good even without bravia engine?!

Colour reproduction is better with bravia engine set to off, bravia engine makes colours too vivid, you get more natural colours w/o bravia engine

The zl does not have a good viewing angle. But I used mine spot on. So no qualms about it. I bought it because of its compactness.
Anyway, I bought an Xperia C today, for my father. And guess what? Xperia C has better viewing angles.
I tested it. Auto brightness off, maximum brightness.
I'm wondering why the low priced Xperia C has a better viewing angle than the premium ZL.

white balance comparison between ZL and galaxy s3

I read lots of bad reviews on ZL's LCD (viewing angle, washed out color..etc)
I switched from Galaxy S3 to ZL a week ago. S3 had been a decent phone, smooth, lots of custom roms
(of course everyone uses S3..many developers)
I am a photographer and have duel monitor setting with 2560 x 1440 S-IPS panels, I use Spyder 4 pro to calibrate displays
(very sensitive to accurate and consistent color)
AMOLED was too blue and red is too much red , made my eyes tired
I agree with ppl saying ZL and Z's LCD screen has really poor viewing angle.
My girl friend actually preferred S3 because that reason.
(we often watch youtube video on S3 and it was fine)
So, basically ZL's screen is only visible for me
(cannot share with my girl friend cause of poor viewing angle) and made us very disappointed.
However, assuming viewing angle is alright, I love the accuracy of color on the screen.
White balance is good (we can even calibrate it).
I will let the picture explain. Default setting,
same browser (white background), and same bright level.
sorry for bad English, it's not my first language.
I agree! Give me LCD any day over the over saturated screen that is AMOLED. However I don't get why you included a pic of the back of both phones
Oh actually I didn't mean it.
Tried to delete the 2nd pic but xda didn't allow me(guess because i am new here )
I also wonder if the viewing angle problem is due to its pre applied screen protector.(some films often make viewing angle very limited ) anyone tried to remove the film?
(Of course hopefully sony logo will go away with the film..)

AFAIK the Sony logo is in the glass unlike on the Z where it's on the shatter proof film. I have yet to remove it though

Sony logo does not go away with the pre applied SP. And FWIW, I dont think Sony would put something that makes the screen look worse. I think you mean a privacy SP. They dont make the screen look washed out, just darken them when looked at from an angle.

yeh. I meant that privacy SP.So, I thought Sony used to have decent displays (I had Sony's z-series long ago and it had a great LCD..).
just still do not understand why sony did not put IPS level display on their flagships..
anyhow, I will be OK with that except when the phone is on my desk and want to check a notification without grabbing it.

(Q) Is display really as bad as people make it out to be?

Hello,
I'm very interested in buying an unlocked ZL, but the only thing that has me thinking twice is the display. Almost every review I've read mentions that the ZL has terrible viewing angles, and the contrast isn't very good.
I'm coming from a Nexus 4, and the viewing angles on it are great. The contrast isn't the best, but I'm not expecting AMOLED black levels here.
So, I just thought I'd check in here and hopefully get a response or two from people who actually own the phone. It's either this or Oppo Find 5, but this one will have tons more support. Thanks in advance!

Why dont you try going through a few threads here? You'll have your answer.
Short answer: Viewing angles worse than N4 even though overall screen quality is much better. If you have a habit of looking at your phones obliquely, dont buy the ZL.
I just went to a Sony store to check it out in person, I really think the display is not bad at all. you should definitely go to the store to see it on person, I am planning to get it once it will be on sale this coming week.

my old one is sony lt29i first time compare to my lt29i
it looks not very bright not colorfully but after couple days
it looks not bad at all I don't know how to say it but for me
I can accept and very good device
I have had mine for 3 weeks and I think the screen is great. Viewing angles are not great, but in my daily use and in my personal opinion the screen looks great. I don't look at my screen from odd angles so it is never an issue for me. Webpages and YouTube videos look fantastic

I personally look the device at local Market, some of Bad issue with the screen is or May be we can say Bad-luck of Sony is that the Software UI Background Color is Grey & its not in Black color, it's the main reason the screen is not looking good & everyone judge it as a washout screen,If we change the theme of Xperia Z the Screen looking Good at All.so I think its same for ZL too.
So viewing Angle are still not good as in IPS panel are, but remember the viewing angle issue is raised in just the Case of Xperia Z/ZL Cause Sony using the same TFT panel in all of their Smartphones & since than No one Complain or Raise even about A bit for the viewing angles,
Xperia T/TX are using same TFT screen Panel but no one said in their reviews that the Viewing angles are Bad & are Washout. But there is actually need to Point out the issue because poeple Spend A lot of their Hard erning Money & in result they don't Get the good thing.
In the Same sense with our TVs Picture Settings in Our Family member Set it to Vivid, some one came(suppose Papa) and set it too Standard & you like Soft or any of Factory settings given in Picture Mode of your TV.
so the point is that the Everyone have their own Preference for the Colors & look on something.
Although we all Admit that Sony should Put the IPS Panel screen in their High End Smartphone, there is no Lag or Cons in Xperia ZL either than of slightly viewing angle, Because in Some situations we must have need for Viewing Angles(not all the time), In that condition the screen Fade out is really a shame for the owner of device as well Sony too because we having a High end smartphone and the screen is Fading in some conditional bloody angles.
I'm saying again there is no any Smartphone which is Perfect in All of their Aspects.
Htc having Heavy software,as well the Htc oneX+ is A issue with its wifi by manufacture, Some People Blaming Sony for their Late Updated Schdule for Software, But remember & check the Htc is having same thing with Software updating schedule, and Samsung having their own bloatwares type software in their mobiles. The Clean and Best nearly Stock Android you Can found in Xperia Z/ZL Smartphone in Form of Jelly Bean (4.1.2).
Also the App "screen Calibration" is putted in Xperia ZL for screen Adjustment by user Preference.
Mostly the chance is that the Latest Software May set all of the issue Regarding our Concerns.
Go in your Nearly Store & check for yourself the screen how its looking to you, leave that how its looking to another person.
God Bless you
I've been using the C6506 since April 3rd and I can honestly say that I *really* love the display. Calibrating with the WB app really helped and everything looks really sharp. I couldn't care less about the viewing angles, because honestly, how many times do I really need to look at the phone off-angle? I moved from an iPhone 5 for this phone and it's far, far better.

Dynamic. Because if I wanted a dull, lifeless display with subdued color i'd buy some junker with a conventional LCD and call it a day. Super AMOLED is half the reason i'm loyal to Samsung, but color me not happy with the new, less vibrant calibrations on the N3 and S4. They definitely listened to the folks who've moaned ad nauseum over the past few years about wanting more "natural" color, obviously those people do a lot of very important photo editing and web design on their phones.
Luckily there's still a good amount (relative to LCD) of color saturation in dynamic mode which is especially excellent for games, something people actually do on a device like the N3.
Professional photo. Colors on the screen look amazing now!

Yeah AMD your screen is gonna look like crap from the psychedelic ad nauseum. Your oled sub pixels are going to burn out much quicker and then you're gonna wonder why your videos and games look like a washed out LCD. Not to mention your phone will use more juice for the extra saturation causing more heat and potential burnout of your CPU/GPU.
Btw, op it is best to use movie for accuracy and battery life. The professional photo mode is a second good option.
Sent from my SM900T.
Granted i'm not a electronics engineer, but i'm not sure if saturation plays a part in burn-out as much as brightness. It would be interesting to know though whether or not higher saturation actually draws more power and causes accelerated dimming of pixels given identical overall light output - Displaymate didn't cover that in their review.

Dynamic, because thats the whole point of a SAMOLED screen.
Standard seems a happy medium. Prefer movie myself, do a lot reading and it doesnt strain my eyes in dark room.
I had it on auto mode, just changed to dynamic. Not worried too much about the screen burning. Jump program... N4!!! I never keep phones that long anyway, might as well get the most out of them while you have them.

Screen question

I currently have a Note 3 and I was looking to replace it with the G3. My only problem is that I'm really used to the awesome look of a Super AMOLED screen and I was wondering if anyone has compared the Note 3's screen to the G3 and can tell me if the WQHD IPS panel has the same if not better look and contrast to it. I'm just tired of my phone and its annoying physical home button on the front, and I would much rather have a G3 because it looks better and its almost the same screen size. I know that Samsung will be keeping their annoying button because of their fingerprint sensor so I want something different. If no one has compared them, are there any places state side that have a demo model to look at yet? thanks in advance.
Here are the numbers, the Note 3 isn't included but you can get an idea

Given the AMOLED will always retain deeper blacks and whites is the G3 that much worse? I'm not that familar with the meaning of the numbers in terms of how each one looks on the screen.
No IPS panel is gonna beat Amoled in contrast since Amoled shows pure black. The issues that I have with Amoled are, pentile matrix and ghosting

I'm aware of that, but does it still have good contrast? I have IPS panels in devices and and I am not very impressed with their images. I haven't encountered any ghosting on my AMOLED yet but I think a change can be good. My N7's screen is noticeably worse than that of my note when I compare them side by side as is my now dead G Pad. From what I have read people are generally happy with the G3's screen, but since 100% of the time you are on your phone you look at the screen, I want to make sure that it looks as nice as it sounds and can provide deeper saturation depending on what I am doing (games, movies or just on xda of course) as the AMOLED does. I havent had a IPS panel phone in quite sometime, but rather other devices of sorts so I don't know how a smaller screen would look in these scenarios.

According to the gsmarena review. The contrast is lacking compared to other IPS panels. Specially the g2's panel. I'm with you I love the deep blacks that you get on Amoled screens. I could not stand the contrast of my m8 and it was the main reason why I returned it. The g2 screen is the only IPS panel that has truly impressed me. In fact I thought the phone had an Amoled screen the first time I saw it

Display white warmth

Hi
I have just received my 32GB european G3, stunning phone in hand, speakers seems really good, but out of everything that I am let down by it is surprisingly the screen I wanted to be blown away and unfortunately I'm not.
I have the Z2 at the moment and I am in no way sticking up for the Z2 it's horrible, uncomfortable in hand, slippy, the vibrate is annoying, the camera isn't overly impressive on auto mode, BUT the screen seems a lot better than the G3 the whites are a lot cooler and the blacks look blacker
So is there anyway to adjust the screen colours on the G3? And I'd there a mod to disable that 90% brightness cap?
Thanks

Here's one for the brightness http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790759 but no way to change the whites yet but I'm sure someone will port it with a custom kernel
Maybe its the glue that you have to let settle in? I've seen some g3 on video and I like the warmth of the whites. But that's how white looks naturally lol
