It's a shame really, since I love EVERYTHING else about this watch - good price, snappy processor, GPS, WiFi (not even sure what that will bring eventually), NFC.
But with this thing serving primarily as a watch on my wrist, I just can't stand the ambient screen. From pretty much any angle it is a low-contrast, mustard-y yellow.
I'm looking at the LG R watch now. It's $50 more, and is missing a bunch of features, but the screen is GREAT. :'-(
I really wanted to like this watch! Please XDA, talk me into keeping it!!

The LG P-OLED screen can burn in... Otherwise I possibly had bought it aswell.
I love the sw3 and especially the ambient mode screen and GPS. Its looks like a compromise between a e-ink and LCD..
But maybe it's a kind of different tastes.

Good point about the burn-in. I just searched over on the LG R watch forums and there's some horror stories of burn-in after just a week. :-o That may be a deal-breaker for me.
Hah! You may have talked me into staying on SW3 just as I requested - thanks! :highfive:
It's a garbage screen on a first-gen looking product. I returned mine for the same reason.

I haven't gotten mine yet but have played with it in store. I wouldn't say it's garbage. Is it on par with other android wear devices? Probably not. However, just as another user stated above, its sort of a mix between e ink and color. It seems to be helping to deliver great battery life with it too. Also, with the update it seems you guys can turn off the feature of activating the screen arm movement. So with this screen you can leave it on always on mode and still be able to see the screen without killing battery. All the android wear devices are first gen tech, but the Sony SW 3 still offers so much more than any of the other watches. For that, I can certainly deal with the screen negatives. Even though it does offer positives so its not completely bad, therefore back to my point that I wouldn't call it garbage.
I like the screen...in my office or while outdoor, I can look at it at any time and almost any angle and can see the time w/o artifiially tilting my arm, or pressing a button. The screen is always on and I get easly 2 days...that is worth a lot to me. My 2 cents....
No matter how you look at it the pro's outweigh the con's.And if you can't live with then just return it and I'll keep mine.

Good point. It's a major flaw of OLED screen. SW3's transflective screen is the perfect choice for ambient mode. It's more readable in bright sunlight. Honestly, transflective LCD is born for outside activities.
I got my first SW3. The screen is too yellow with a small dark spot at the bottom of the screen. I returned it immediately and now the 2nd one is really good.
I disagree. Try taking your smartphone and let the sun shine on the screen (or a bright lamp) and lower the brightness. The whites and blacks will be very similar in color to the SW3's screen. I'm currently using the Odyssey watchface and sometimes it takes a while for the full watchface to turn on so I get the opportunity to seen the ambient screen with the backlight on. Whites are white on it. What I would like is for the ambient light sensor to turn on the backlight at minimal brightness in low light conditions.
my device is very white. It is of course no OLED screen that are over saturated mostly but i definetly see no yellow tint there on white (maybe a really tiny bit more yellowish but really nothing i notice at all in normal use).
And having the watch always on is such a huge + in my opinion. Yes you can't see the screen in low light situations. But honestly.
People are never happy. When the backlight would be always on some people would complain that the watch is always making light in the dark.
(which would annoy me probably more)
If you want correctly displayed colors you would need to calibrate your screens.
Who does that for home usage here?
It's definitely not first gen. I had first gen smartwatch from Sony, this one is ten times better
I would like the option for a low backlight on low light (current low backlight settings are too bright to begin with). I suppose that's what custom ROMs/root apps are for.
I like it on mine. The default faces are pretty bad on it in ambient mode, but I built ones for it on Facer that make it really easy to read.

I'm not sure if you had something like this in mind ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57615301 ) ...but I'm using this app and it lets me lower the brightness down to where it's much more comfortable for using my watch in bed at night. The developer is letting us try it out for free until 12/21... but I went ahead and bought it for a buck from the Play Store.
Grown to love ambient mode, except for complete darkness I can read the watch fine.
I have a Gear Live, try to go out in the sun and read the time, this watch no problem.
I purchased Facer, made myself a digital watch face with huge numbers that makes the watch even more visible in direct sun

Agreed! I live in Florida (the sunshine state) and spend lots of time outdoors. Our days are long, it's almost always sunny, and the sun is INTENSE! I got this watch specifically because of this display. Try reading an OLED display outdoors in Florida sun. Even my Note4 with its high-brightness outdoor mode is barely readable. Yet my SW3 is clear as day, with or without the backlight. Yes, it definitely doesn't look as pretty indoors as the OLED screens, but for my use its perfect. Not like I'm watching movies on it or anything. I'm glad Sony decided to carry over the transflective tech from the SW2...it was a bold move but it's one of the things that sets this product apart. If you don't like it, there are plenty of competing products on the market.
I just wish there was a way to disable the backlight under any ambient light conditions, like my SW2. One of the firmware updates for the SW2 introduced a smarter backlight that stayed off, even when in use, when there was enough ambient light, like outdoors. While it makes no difference in appearance, it helps conserve battery.

Transflective screens are also installed on all Garmin outdoor standalone GPS: if you want a well readable screen on EVERY situation you need a transfective.... NOT a AMOLED.
Amoled is much contrasted and wonderful on artificial light or on low natural light, but is a pain during summer outdoor activity (and need maximum power consumption to be barely readable)

The transflective display is one of the big selling points of this watch if you ask me. It's visible in pretty much any light except very low. I don't have to turn the backlight on to see it (saves battery) and it's viewable in direct sunlight. This is a huge plus for anyone taking this thing out for runs or bike rides. I'm a long distance runner and use this watch exclusively for tracking and music, it works great!
The screen on the Sony Smartwatch 3 is the best, hands the fak down!! Always on and viewable, just as watch suppose to be.
Its comical sporting a watch thats turned off until you put it up in front of your grill to turn ON...gayness to the fullest.
How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the LG G5's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.

will never be as good as oled but surprisingly does a pretty good job
Well it gets the job done could be better
Compared to my G3 its miles better. and compared to that over saturated piece of garbage i would say job well done LG.
May not compete with the S7 OLED in terms of black levels but I'm pretty certain the colours are more natural and realistic.
The colors are more natural and the contrast (black levels) is just too damn good compared to my G3. Well done LG!

I tried a side by side comparison with my G3 at full brightness, the G3 screen has a red tint to the white, while the G5 has a turquoise tint... I wonder which one is actually closer to real colours

All I can really say is the black is pretty good for a non amoled screen, if you want to compare it a amoled screen, may be in a few years time, at present nothing comes close to amoled.

Thanks! I guess colour accuracy is very subjective when it is not on paper
I found the white a bit more white at full brightness, but a bit bluish at lower brightness, if only we could correct it! haha, Lg has this strange tendency to make cooler displays since the G4 (the V10 has it too) They go around 7800-8000k instead of the ideal 6700k
If i let a brigth image for ~10 minutes the pixels stuck in this image for ~30 minutes and for that time i can see in grey that image.
Guys, do you have screen bleed on black with your G5s?

The display is definitely better than what weve had on the previous OnePlus phones. I did find the color saturation a bit weird coming from the LCD of the OnePlus One to the OAMOLED of the OP3, but it's a pretty beautiful display to look at.
I haven't been able to compare with another AMOLED screen, but compared to my LG G3 at full brightness, the OnePlus 3 screen colours doesn't seem as vibrant as an AMOLED screen should be. One other thing is that I've been so used to QHD on the G3, I can really notice the drop back to HD. Nonetheless, the OnePlus 3 is bang for buck no matter which way you look at it.
I just have one word. Gorgeous.
The display is sharp enough, bright enough and the color saturation is good. And definetly better than previous OP screens

You notice because it has PenTile arrangement, not because it's FHD.
I've gotten used to it now, the screen is still quite amazing on the OP3. Tbh, I've always found it funny how phone manufacturers are sucked into the res race given some of the drawbacks of pushing a larger amount of pixels.
I'm moving from my Moto X (2014) to OP3, and trust me the white balance is WAY off towards the blue end. I read a review which did display tests on both the AMOLEDs of X and OP3, and apart from the white balance, OP3 has a slightly better screen and/or screen calibration than the X (which is 2 years old).
Overall I still find it blue after I switch from the X, but it's a beautiful screen nonetheless.

Yep, thanks! Did that but forgot to mention. Though be careful when you change the slider, there's no reset option in case you want it as it came (not a biggie but a reset option would've been helpful).

That's a bummer. Didn't know it'd turn out this bad.
I really hope I had a defective piece though. Text looks really bad on it. It ruins the experience of using a premium phone.
Guess I'm really bothered by it because my previous phones were the 6P and Note 4 and I use a retina MacBook Pro; all three had/have excellent displays).
I was very worried about the display when I have heard many saying that it is not sharp due to the pentile arrangement.
Just got mine few hours ago, and here is my personal opinion:
The display looked sharp and crisp, the pentile matrix is hardly visible unless you look at the screen very closely, but under normal usage distance, the display is excellent.
It is true that true resolution on any pentile display is less than the ideal, and this artcile explains it: https://medium.com/@suyashsrijan/1080p-pentile-is-not-true-1080p-9951b9e5c2ee#.w8v3hh7vz
According to it, the effective resolution becomes 326ppi rather than 401ppi.
FYI, resolution of iphone 6s is also 326ppi.
To me the screen of OP3 is way better than the OP2. Everything just looks nice. My OP2 was calibrated with kcal and OP3 has similar calibration. Only the dark grey is a little on the blue/green side.
Disappointed with pixelation caused by the PenTile matrix. Sure, the display is great (much more vibrant and brighter than my outgoing iPhone 6 Plus) but with my perfect near vision small text and edges of icons etc all appear slightly jagged. From a normal distance it's not too bothersome but I can always see it. The 1080p RGB matrix panel on the iPhone appears instantly sharper in comparison but I still wouldn't say its a match as the colour, contrast and brightness are all far better on the OP3.
Resolution is too low for VR, but for everyday tasks is perfect.
I am hesitating to buy a 1+3 device mainly for the mixed comments about screen/display quality.
Can any owner of 1+3 post some pictures of any classical webpage (bbc, cnn, xda, ...) magnified gradually, up to the maximum (125%, 150%, ..., 300%, ..)?
Thanks

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.

Same, custom mode with full warm is my fav so far. Whites in other modes looks little blueish to me.
At first I thought S-RGB mode to be very bland in comparison with the default's vibrant colours. But after trying out the S-RGB for a day straight I don't want the default anymore xD
Everything seems much more realistic, accurate, not overly saturated, and even soothing/calmer with S-RGB. Default now gives off a wacky vibe, like I'm high or something
Edit: Tried custom full warm like the posts above, but I don't like it during the day. At night it is good, but still prefer the S-RGB for most of the day.
I really dislike the screen of the OP3T and I'm probably going to return mine because of it.
Unfortauntely I can't post an image comparison I made but you can probably see it for yourself: get some app with sharp edges in the UI and black on white text (Now for reddit, for example), you'll notice a bit of color fringing around the text, typically some green above and purple below the characters' lines. This makes text look somewhat out of focus and uncomfortable to read.
It really sucks compared to my Nexus 5's IPS screen, sure more vibrant colors but what use is that if it can't display text in a readable form?
Too bad, I really like the rest of the phone. Now I'll have to go back and look for another affordable dual sim high-spec phone.
(This is my second OP3T after I returned the first one believing this was a manufacturing defect, after some looking around it seems to be a result of the screen being a PenTile AMOLED display at a too low resolution for the size)
i now have a huawei p9 with 1080p ips lcd and 5,2". i like the uniformity and the "sharp edges" (no pentile matrix) of the display.
anyone in the same boat and did a "downgrade" to the OP3T amoled screen?
i`m a little bit afraid of uneven gray level (yellow on one side) and fuzzy fonts which are not so comfortable readable as on a lcd display.
l like the phone specs but worried about the low resolution screen - anyone have this and the s7 edge and can compare the screens ?
sRGB mode is really great in my opinion --> the calibration in this mode is great, so you can be sure, that everything on the web and in apps looks as the creator intended, as sRGB is for the time being the "standard" color profile.
I have no problem with the pentile matrix and 1080p resolution --> while I can notice a difference in sharpness compared to the OPO with its 1080p IPS display, the display of the OP3T is all around great. I would put the sharpness of the OP3T around the sharpness of the iPhone7 (non plus) with its 326ppi.
The sRGB mode on the OP3 is way better.. The OP3T sRGB mode is definitely pretty washed out with a lot more yellow tint..
I'm sure one plus can tweak that.. Nothing inherently wrong with the screen coz I think they're the same..

I'm calling BS on this one. Smells like a troll...
I just got OnePlus 3t for a week. The screen sharpness look okay to me, I have s6 and s7 edge to compare and I can't see any pixel in these phone except both samsungs look sharper. The only complaint here is that the screen panel doesn't look very black when see in daylight and not as vivid/warm, compare to my iPhone 6s. But custom setting to nearly full warm help a lot.
I use to be afraid of the pentile 1080p too, but now I can say it look very great.
I'm disappointed in the clarity of the screen, it looks quite pixelated and grainy to me. I can't understand why OP didn't go for a QHD in the 3T
I preffer 1920x1080 in my 3T, the screen has a lot of quality in my opinion, I don't want anymore.
I don't like the screen at all, it just isn't as sharp as other phones compared to today's standards its not great. Im quite let down by it.

It's decent in my opinion
I came from Galaxy S6 and its (well, let's face it) outstanding quad HD display and actually the downgrade in resolution is in fact noticeable for me. Not a big deal though, it may be just me being crazy about some minor details

Agreed, I'm used to using 2k screen phones and I'm perhaps being a bit OCD about it. The 3T screen isn't bad by any means, I can just see the difference from my old 2k phones which is annoying me. I'm also noticing the PWM on the screen and that's something I've not noticed in phones since I had my old Note 4.

Exactly, I totally agree with you
Such an amazing phone but the 1080 pentile is ugly, you're only getting an effective resolution of around 900p because of it. I feel the phone is spoiled a lot because of this.
sRGB mode is a must also on this panel.
Coming from a Moto X Pure, which has a 1440p display, I can definitely tell the difference, especially when I resize my desktop icons using Nova Launcher, with the display set to small on Nougat. This phone however is blazing fast compared to the Pure, so I'll be getting used to the display and set my icons to a somewhat smaller size (120% instead of 130%.)
I have no reason to root this thing either, except for a custom kernel with KCAL support and using Kernel Adiutor-Mod. None of the sRGB settings are good enough for me. I need Samsung-like bleeding color settings.
EDIT: Solved the blurry icons with Nova by disabling the "Normalize icon size" option.
