hi all,
ive been searching all night for help with this issue but I don't know what to do.
this is an SGH-t999 currently the phone is soft bricked stuck on the kies screen after I tried to root the phone using a root method that was supposed to work..-_- anyway,
im currently trying to download the latest stock image but it will take about 5 hours to download. im hoping that maybe within that time someone can point me in the right direction.
when im on download mode the phone says custome binary 3 counts. any help would be gladly appreciated.

When you launch Odin, you still able to communicate with your phone? If are, then you can try to reflash back using the Stock 4.1.2 image. My phone is still having issues too so I'm just trying to go back to something that I know will work.

I'm pretty sure you ran into the same problem as me. I've been working on this ALL DAY and it's my birthday. You have no idea how stressed out I've been since I woke up lol. Anyways, I think I figured out what happened.
When I was flashing the stock image of 4.3 via Odin, my phone never actually cleaned out the previous system image. I confirmed this by flashing TWRP via Odin and performed a factory reset/system wipe. Once I confirmed that this was actually executed, then I reflashed my phone using the Official 4.3 stock. I read in another thread that you're supposed to uncheck Auto-Reboot but I forgot to (I don't think this step matters very much). Anyways, once the image was downloaded, I left the USB cable plugged in and made sure that Odin changes the status from RESET to PASS. Once it reports this status, it shouldn't take more than 5 min for it to go pass the boot screen (Samsung Logo).
I'm speaking of this purely from my experience today. Believe me, I've been working on this for the last 6 hours researching and reflashing my phone. I tripped the warranty counter and my flash counter is at 9. Best of luck to you
@ibuddha, @wesc16, After you odin a stock md5 img or a root66 md5 img you need to factory reset or wipe data from the stock recovery. You can do this by pressing the volume up and the home button while powering up. Then you can reboot and boot up just fine.
If you odin to 4.3 dont try to odin to anything lower it could brick your device.
I have this issue. I was using CyanogenMod latest update. I tried using Odin to reinstall the stock tmobile rom (wanted wifi calling), now my phone wont boot past the Samsung logo. I can get into booting mode , but holding volume up, power, home screen phone will not go into recovery. I tried multiple roms (forgot them all) Odin will pass them all, still wont boot.
Try flashing cwm or twrp recovery, then reboot to recovery as instructed by sswb27 above.

I'm getting this in Odin
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid
<OSM> openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-d2tmo.tar.md5 is invalid.
<OSM> End...
I've downloaded 2 different TWRP .tar files
Its failing the md5 checksum indicating a corrupted download. I just uploaded some new ones last night. Try twrp 2 8.0.1 or 2.7.1.0.

I know this is an older thread but I have similar issue with wife's SGH-T999L but it soft bricked itself after factory reset now stuck in boot loop on tmo logo animation . It has done this multiple times before. we've always had problems with this device I have to factory reset it every time she fills up with photos. The device never recognizes that the pics have been backed up and deleted will say it has insufficient memory please delete until it gets reset. First time it magically figured itself out, second time I just flashed stock firmware let the boot-loop kill the battery charged it up and it booted fine. tried again last night no go. I will try it again tonight with TWRP. It's time to finally root will probably root66 at the same time since i cant boot the phone up to use towelroot. Trying to find a efficient ROM for the T999L if anyone has any ideas.

Really hope somebody can help.
I have had a galaxy note 2 for about 6 months on Vodafone UK N7100.
Today while i was at work i felt something hot in my pocket, my phone was very hot (i was not doing anything with it) The phone was stuck on the Samsung boot screen.
After a few minutes of looking at this i realised it was stuck and removed the battery. SInce then i have been unable to get past the boot screen, i can't get into download mode or reboot mode. The only things to note. When i turn my phone on a red light flashes. When i plug my charger in the charge icon appears on screen but it does not charge.
Really hoping somebody can help.
I had rooted my phone if that helps (it did not cause this problem and has been functioning rooted for months)
Update
Just managed to get to a screen which warned me about installing custom software and did i want to continue. I said yes and it is now downloading something
How did you get to that screen?

this would be your last hope http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32273406&postcount=5 follow the guide properly marked in red and remember to tick re partition in odin, if this doesnt work then your phone has been affected by sds due to 4.1.1 rom so u need to take it to service for motherboard replacement which is borne by samsung so no worries, and remember never to use a 4.1.1 rom in note 2 get the 4.1.2 rom or rather they will install that only this time and in future just go through dr.ketan thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696 here it will guide you perfect instead following some untidy guides

Thanks for the advice i am downloading the file now.
I did not manage to install the rom i suggested i was using so i don't think that could have been the issue. My phone just seemed to get hot then stop working, i hope as you suggested it is not my motherboard. Did you say that i should still be covered by the warrenty even though i had rooted my device?

well your reply is quite confusing
1.did you manage to flash the rom with pit in odin. was it successful or you get any errors
2.does your phone start now
3.if not then your phone has died and it needs to be taken to service guys ,but just check what the status of your phone in download mode is it official or custom . if its official then no worries just go ahead and take it to service guys and tell them abt your issue that the phone stopped working while in pocket dont info them that you rooted it ever just make them blv that it was a sds caused by 4.1.1 rom so they replace it free.
i mean your motherboard
Sorry if i am confusing matters.
I did not manage to flash anything it was just coming up with failed no PIT partition.
Current binary samsung official
My system status is custom
Are these ok to return my phone with?
I decided to take the advice offered and download the recovery but got confused.
Do i need all of the files from that link or just 1?
I downloaded the first one N7100XXDMB2_Factory
It contained
boot
cache
hidden
modem.bin
recovery
sboot.bin
system
tz
None of these are the md5 format
i am now thinking i should have downloaded XXDLJ2_OXA_Factory
Is that correct or was i right with the first file. If i was right downloading the first file then where do i get the md5 files required for odin to do my factory restore.
Know these are very noobish questions just doint want to do anything wrong
In answers to your questions....
1) Did i manage to flash the rom with it in odin
No
I got confused which files i should be using and did not want to do anything without being sure
2) My phone does not start
3) When i am in download mode my phone shows
Current binary Samsung official
My system status is custom

If your phone doesn't have a partition map, then no, you can't.
You can try, as a last resort, using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43760271&postcount=22
I had a similar problem not too long ago (although it started with all apps crashing and then stuck at bootscreen) and managed to fix my phone.

EFS is a part of the system that stores your serial number, IMEI and everything related to your phone specifically. You are generally able to back it up using a custom recovery or using software on your PC while the phone is rooted and booted on the android OS. Since you cannot boot into recovery and also can't boot into android itself, I don't think you would be able to back it up.
If you ever installed a custom rom with AROMA, there is a chance you have it backed up already. But if you don't explicitly remember...

Noob here, please be patient.
Samsung SGH-T989D was running CM 9. Did a factory reset as I was planing to sell the phone, but once I did that the phone was stuck in a loop at the boot logo.
Tried upgrading via recovery mode to the new CM 10, but was still stuck in boot loop.
Tried clearing cache, etc...but nothing would work.
So I downloaded the newest stock Telus ROM, put the phone into download mode and used Odin to flash - however Odin failed.
Now the phone won't start and I immediately get the following message: "Firmware upgrade encounted an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again".
I tried Kies recovery mode but it does not see my phone. Odin still sees it, but wont flash it.
I found this thread for the S2 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458.
But I have not been able to find one for the S2x.. Where would I find the bootloader and kernel to flash as it explains in the above guide...
Or maybe someone has other advice?
Thanks for your help!!

Lots of stuff the t989 there. Just be sure you actually have the t989 or t989d.
Or look through our dev section for probably more up to date stuff.

All u need to do is download Odin 1.85 to ur PC, then go to http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and download the twrp 2.6.6.0.tar.md5 to ur PC, power ur phone on in download mode, the same screen will come up "firmware...issue", kids will do nothing for this and u will need to make sure kids is NOT RUNNING. Odin will not see the device if kies is running at all, now open the Odin program and connect the phone to PC using OEM factory USB cable, on Odin it should say "added", now click the box PDA, find the twrp file u downloaded b4, click on that file and then hit start in Odin, DO NOT CHECK ANYTHING ELSE... Let Odin do its thing and u will be fine, Odin will reboot the phone and u will now have twrp recovery, boot to recovery to finish rooting process

I wasnt going to use the files from the other thread, I just assumed I could try this procedure once I got the correct files for the SGH-T989D:
Recovering a soft bricked phone
1) Grab the Recovery Package, and you'll see a bunch of .tar files. Take a look at the names. You'll see CODE, MODEM, CSC and .PIT. Put each one in its place.
2) Turn off your phone. Enter Download mode by presing Volume Down + Home + Power button.
3) Plug in your phone. It will show you, in a yellow box in ODIN, ID:COMx (x being the number displayed, sometimes displays 7, sometimes displays 9)
Now here, take a breath
First try flashing WITHOUT the .PIT and re-partition. And only if it DOESN'T WORK OR FIX then you flash with the .PIT and Re-Partition ticked.
4) Once ready and done all your prayers, press Start. Wait patiently. It usually takes 5 minutes to flash.
Have you done everything correctly until now? Then...
Congratulations on recovering your phone!
You deserve some cake afterwards, and some rest
Now, if your problem is the NAND rw coruption, and wasn't fixed by the above fix, then follow these steps :
5) Download the Kernel. Flash it in PDA. Without ticking Re-Partitioning
6) Successful? Nice, hope is still present.
7) Flash the recovery package, following steps 1-4 This should fix your issue. If it does not, then :
WARNING : FLASHING A BOOTLOADER IS DANGEROUS. FLASH WITH EXTREME CAUTION.
8) Download the Bootloader. Flash it as PDA or Bootloader in ODIN. Without ticking Re-Partitioning
9) Flash the Kernel, as in step 5
10) Flash the recovery package, like in steps 1-4 And that will fix any of your issues
11) After you have recovered your phone, I advise you to have your phone completely up to date by browsing and downloading the firmware for your version through SamMobile!

I tried to flash a CM 10.2 ROM coming from Carbon 4.3. The phone is stuck in a boot loop and when I try to turn off and boot into recovery it shows the blue recovery message in the top left corner but then continues to boot and goes right back to the boot loop. I have tried multiple times and cannot get into recovery. What do i do now?
Try for download mode.

Download the stock rom for your phone and put the phone in download mode, run odin, flash the proper firmware for your device. If you look around on here, you will find a pre-rooted one or goto sammobile.com, or samsung-updates.com and download what you need. I would have posted links but on mobile and dont have a lot of time.

OK I tried to use odin to flash the stock rooted firmware. When I opened the file with PDA it took a few seconds to check md5 and said valid, then I hit start and it only took about 2 seconds and gave this message
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
I updated to a newer samsung driver i found and rebooted the computer and tried flashing with odin again and it finally seems to have worked. now the phone rebooted and is on the samsung logo and has been for a while. Do i need to wait for it to boot or reboot? How long should it take?
Well I finally got tired of waiting and pulled the battery. I was then able to boot to recovery and do a factory reset and reboot into the stock firmware that I flashed via Odin. Now back to flashing cm10.2!
Please Note: I am not a complete Noob.
I was running the Root 666 Odin Flashed Stock Rom. I was already rooted and everything was fine, I wanted to update with a Tmobile OTA. The Phone said it was ready to upgrade, I went ahead and did the upgrade. when I was in recovery I pushed the back botton to go back to a previuos screen. However the phone rebooted, when the phone came on: It gave me a message that the upgrade was unseccesfuly.
Now the phone has lost Super User (app still there but no files to support it, so it closes automaticly), lost my custom recovery, and I am still on 4.1.1
when I tried to ODIN flash the new Root 666, the phone goes into a Manuel Stock Recovery. (there is no triangle anymore)
Odin recognizes the phone, but does not flash. The lines inside Odin, shows when the phone is connected. I clicked the PDA botton, and then Start. HOWEVER - Odin says it has compeleted, but takes less than 1 second; And the final line say ( completed 0 / Failed 0)
there is no change after I reboot, I don't know what else to try. I also tried to use Terminal Elmulator and the recovery file, but was also unseccesful with this method.
can someone please help, I need Root for various reasons. I don't want to lose it. PLEASE HELP!
Can you flash Custom Recovery and then flash SuperSU zip that way.
If you are planning on flashing Root66, flash the 4.1.1 Root66 alone. Don't flash the latest 4.3 Root66 unless you know what you are getting into. ( Read Knox, Efuse and Warranty Bit)
Where doni find the zip files, will u please send me a link. Or name the thread where i can go to. Very much appreciate the advise, btw.

Check my Sig for links.
Hello Doc, I tried to flash the files from your signature. However I got an error message for both the cwm and su files. I picked the latest ones on ur page. While in stock recovery. The phone said failed to verify whole signature file.
Should I have picked an older file? And if so how do I know which one is the correct file for my phone. I have a Tmobile T999 running 4.1.1

You flash CWM or TWRP with Odin or Mobile Odin. Once that's successful, THEN you flash the SuperSU zip file after booting into CWM or TWRP.
Neither can be flashed with Stock Recovery.
@Perseus71 - I am having a problem with ODIN, its not flashing my phone (with all due respect) I had stated that in the original question. Mobile Odin says i need Root to work. I lost both CWM and SU when I tried to upgrade. Im still running 4.1.1. the first time i rooted the phone all i did was pick the file with the PDA button the hit start.
I tried flashing root 666, i tried flashing the recovery file by its self. Odin says:
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> CWM_Touch_6.0.4.5.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
nothing happens after that. no change.
1. Make sure you have Odin version 3.07 or newer.
2. Make sure the Phone was in Download mode when you plugged in. If it was in download mode, check your drivers. Doc's signature has correct drivers.
Greetings from the land of 4.3 rooted . I want to thank u all for advise. I finally figured out what in was doing wrong. Thanks again!!

Well I was going into recovery, when I should have been going into download mode. I know its retarded (complete noob move)
Download mode is = volume DOWN + home + power
Recovery mode is = volume UP + home + power
it took me a while to notice, maybe because I flash a lot of roms. I would automatically went straight to Recovery, I read the post over and over Until I noticed there was a difference between the two. I already had root, you would of thought th second time around it would be easier. Just another example of why WE (noobs) all need to read and follow directions carefully.
thanks again.
Thanks for the explanation! Trust me you are not the first and wont be the last to make a similar mistake! So that post may end up helping others. Glad you figured it out!

Ok the backround. about 5 days ago the software update started. All seemed ok but then I was getting reboots 4-5 times a day. Brought it to AT&T and they tried to reflash. After backing up info I signed the release form holding them not liable for bricking the phone. Asked the tech how many have bricked on him and he said none. Sorry I was his first...maybe. Screen asking for Kies program to repair. AT&T tech not allowed to use Kies. I downloaded Kies but no luck.
Got the bugger to go to the Boot screen of "Warning...a custom OS....". Then the "Downloading, do not turn of target" screen. It is stuck there or I should say I have left it there. Top of screen says Odin Mode (in red), Produce Name: SGH-I747, Current Binary: Samsung Official, Qualcomm SecureBoot: Enabled, Warranty Bit: 0, Bootloader Ap SWREV: 3.
I have downloaded Odin 3.09. I have the USB drivers installed. I want to restore last known version of AT&T android 4.2.2 or the upgrade 4.3 that didn't seem to take. I am not sure which version it was running before the crash. My wife's S3 is running 4.3.
What Next? Where do I get the file to upload to the phone? Thanks.
So your s3 was trying to upgrade from 4.1.2 or 4.3?

Not sure. I think I checked the build version after the install and it read 4.2.2. Can't be absolutely certain when i saw that build number. Would make sense to check it after the install assuming the install happened at all. But again the wife and I bought the two S3's at the same time and hers is running 4.3.
If you got the ota a few days ago, and judging from the SWREV (Software Revision), you are currently on 4.4.2 firmware (NE4). This means you cannot flash older firmware on Odin (or any other way, OT it'll really brick). From now on you can only flash NE4 firmware.
You can, however, flash older roms.
If you haven't already, try factory resetting from recovery. (This will wipe all your data including the internal sdcard)
If that doesnt work, my only other suggestion is to flash TWRP via Odin, then boot TWRP recovery and flash the stock NE4 rom from enewman17.

I can't get to the factory reset screen, only the warning screen before pressing volume up to load a custom OS. I'm confused....well on may levels but I digress. I thought ROM and firmware were the same thing.
Also the TWRP site has two files, same file I Assume, in different formats, md5 and tar. Are they the same file? Do I use one over the other? To flash TWRP using Odin what screen should I start with on the S3? thanks.
To boot recovery hold volume up, home and power. When it vibrates release power only.
A rom (as we use it here) is just the O/S on the /system partition and is usually flashed in recovery. They also include kernels most of the time. The firmware is this, and more. It includes images for multiple partitions. (aboot, sbl2, sbl3, tz, rpm, modem, recovery, boot, system, cache)
Around here you'll see a lot of folks refer to this as just the bootloaders, but they are talking about the base firmware. Sorry if I confuse anyone with that btw, I try to remember to call it the bootloaders, but am just used to using the term firmware.
As for flashing twrp from odin, it must be a .tar or .tar.md5. Both are used by odin. The .md5 extension just tells odin a hash value is included. It will then run an md5 checksum to verify the file about to be flashed is valid, or not corrupted. Either one will work, but the .tar.md5 is safer. If the download gets corrupted somehow, odin will catch it and refuse to flash.
When flashing anything in odin you need to be in Download mode.

Thanks Doc, when I try the boot recovery hold volume up, home and power I get the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." message. If I use the hold volume down, home and power combo I get to the "Warning!! A custom Os can cause....." screen. If I press volume up it goes to the "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!" screen. If I press volume down it reboots to the "Kies" screen. Which screen mode should I be in when attempting to flash the TWRP file with Odin? thanks.
OK I tried to flash the TWRP file. Put S3 in download mode, Opened Odin, plugged in S3, Odin showed "added", tried to load the TWRP file into Odin but it freezes Odin. Non responsive Odin. Tried 4 times with and without plugging in phone. any clues?
Try downloading the file again. Could be a corrupted download. Also, what version of Odin are you using?
Oh, and kies interferes with Odin. Uninstall it and try odin again.

Thanks I tried 3.09 first then 3.07. 3.09 hangs right away. 3.07 doesn't say "not responding" but nothing happens. Looks like it will but no. I wait for about 45 min. I will try everything from scratch. I did uninstall Kies with no help. Kies can't find the device - generic code 43.
Is it the Bootloader ap SWREV: 3 that indicates I need 4.4.2?
If its an older version such as 4.3 can i/should I still install 4.4.2?
Where do I find 4.4.2. Thanks for all your help because this is like finding a specific needle in a stack of needles without even fulling understanding what a needle is! God I miss DOS.
I've been doing all the above without sim or sd card installed. Does that make any difference.

IT's BACK ALIVE! Now what?
What happened? None of the .MD5 files would load and would just lock the Odin. Since I had nothing to loose I used a 2.6 version of the .tar file without the .MD5 check. It loaded fine, rebooted and there is my phone screen with all my apps and info. I'm afraid to even unplug it from the cable (silly I know). Checked the version and it reads 4.4.2., baseband version I747UCUFNE4, Kernel version 3.4.0-1514807, build number KOT49H.I171UCUFNE4, SE for Android status Enforcing SEPF_SAMSUNG-SGH-I747_4.4.2_0016.
Am I done? Is it safe to put back in service or should I do something else? thanks
Weird! Sounds like something on your system didn't like the md5sum. Never seen that before!
But if it appeared to flash ok, rebooted and it says PASS in Odin, you should be good to go.
First though, what exactly did you flash? Can you link to it? To my knowledge there is no NE4 firmware package available. Ive been trying to make one but it hasn't worked yet....

Just flashed the TWRP http://true-android.blogspot.com/2014/01/install-twrp-recovery-2631-on-at-galaxy.html. It passed it and phone rebooted to the normal reboot and my old screen. Weird? I do weird all the time. I used Odin 3.09. I have run it through some of its apps. I will wait 24 hours to see if it reboots by itself.
Cool, sounds like it should be ok then. Hopefully it'll make it through your testing period!

Well it's functioning but we are back to the reboots 4-5 x a day. I can get to the recovery screen now. Anyone have a guess of my best next option?
Not sure, could be a faulty power switch though. Lots of these have been going bad in recent months, but it usually happens all the time, not just a few times a day.

Just a F/U. The reboot was getting to be a problem. Also had a problem with back up and restore apps. Found one that worked so I did a factory reset. All is good again. Love my S3 again. Still not happy with how AT&T handled the problem though.
