Do you use your G Pad as an ebook reader? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking of buying myself a Kindle Paperwhite, but for a bit more money I could get a LG G Pad or Nexus 7. So, is anyone using his/hers G Pad for reading ebook? Could it be a valid substitute for the Paperwhite?
Should I be concerned with the battery life of the G Pad when reading only ebooks, and is the Nexus 7 having better battery life?

I have both the g pad and a kindle. Personally for normal books Id use the kindle over the g pad all day long. However if you read comics or manga then the g pad is much better for that. So it really depends on what your going to do with it. If your just reading standard text only books just save some money and get a kindle.

I had a kindle paperwhite, which I gave away. I have a kindle with e-ink that I use for reading outside in full sunlight, but never touch otherwise.
I prefer a tablet. When reading e-books I prefer white text on a black background. I have both Kindle and Nook books and can read both on the same device, along with non-drm books.
I really enjoy using the GPad as an e-reader.

I got my g-pad to replace my old nook 1st edition and I use the Aldiko app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aldiko.android&hl=en) which allows you to do white-on-black or black-on-white and allows you to customize many other aspects of your reading experience.

And are you happy with the battery life when reading? It seems that's the weak spot of the GPad. Does the Nexus 7 have better battery life?

Playing games for hours on end will kill the battery in about 6-8 hours, reading (combined with some idle time) the battery has lasted 18 or so hours. And just plain idle time I have had mine last 24+ hours. So I'm very happy with the battery life. The way I typically use it I end up charging it over night about every night and it lasts the whole day. (combined reading, games, browsing, etc). Note this is also while it has a constant bluetooth connection going to my phone for qpair.

That sounds great. I read a lot of people around here are not getting more than 6 hours, which sounded like a deal breaker.

I have heard that as well, I think it depends on what ROM you are using. Some people have the stock LGE Rom running 4.2.2, some have the GPE stock Rom running 4.4.2. And some (like me) have a custom rom such as Cyanogenmod or other non-stock roms out there.

If battery life is what you're looking for you should definitely go for the paperwhite.
Have you done any research, are you aware of the differences between screens of a normal tablet and that of a paperwhite?
It's a totally different reading experience.

I bought ezPDF Reader and I use white text on a black background.
It's very comfortable, although it's not an e-ink display.

I do the same (+ Aldiko Sync) and battery life is pretty awesome. I do prefer tablets to read that e-ink technologies.
Any suggestions for a good Comic reading app?
Cheers.

ComicRack is the only one I use and it's great. The free version doesn't have many limitations other than you can't sync wirelessly from your computer.

AMAZING battery life on gsm Gnex

This is from my first full charge cycle. Completely stock. Amazing! This is 3.5 hours screen on and 2 hours voice calls. It's not letting me upload those screen shots for some reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
thats pretty good!
Yeah mine has been pretty solid as well. Yesterday after 17hrs I was still at 35% which is better than most Android phones I've had.
I really think that galaxy nexus standby is amazing but the screen is the only thing that really drains the battery. So if you don't use it heavily, you should be fine. I use my nexus moderately and I still get through a day with about 40% left.

Pretty good... i find voice calls and cell signal to be main battery drain cause on Sprint's turtle 3G network.
With 2100mah extended battery, 15% juice left unplugged at 8:30am, replugging in at 10pm, 2.5hr screen, 1hr gps, 30min voice
2nd full charge cycle
Here are the results from my 2nd full charge cycle:
40+ hours off charger; 4.5 hours screen-on time. Remarkably good.
How are you getting such good battery life? i can't seem to even last a whole work day, requiring me to charge before I leave the office.
I just got my replacement, so hopefully it will be better this time around.

I use 30-40% brightness. Black wallpaper. Other than that, nothing special. I only have 1 gmail account syncing, unlike some of the people on here that have 3 or 4 email accounts syncing. I also only have like 2-3 widgets running (beautiful widgets smaller home, audiomanager pro, astrid, and maybe one or two others). And most of the screen on time is doing relatively simple tasks like web browsing, reading xda, google talk, etc. Nothing too terribly intensive like video.
Based on my experience though it seems like pretty much anybody except the heaviest of users should be able to get at least a full day's use out of it, and lighter users should easily be able to get 2.
Is yours GSM? I hear the Vzw/Sprint ones get far worse battery life.

I agree. I ended a day with ~70% battery left, and most of my usage was the screen (~30 minutes or something). I haven't had any issues with my battery dying on me yet. If I left the screen off all day, I could probably use 10-15%.

I'm guessing it isn't using LTE. If I only connect by wifi and turn off data syncing then I can get more than a day too (with moderate use).
LTE really drains the battery.

Correct it is gsm, not lte.
That's impressive! Stock rom allows you to get at least 20 hours of WiFi/3G with 3-4 hrs of screen. Auto brightness. Here in Europe we don't have LTE, so our batteries could last a little bit more.
avarage battery use is over 13 hours (cm9+franco kernel).
10 hours and 53 min it dropped to 94% worth mentioning I didn't even touch the phone, can't seem to post a screen shot of it
Right now I am at 45% and I used it quiet heavily today
I didn't charge the phone even if it sems like it

Some of the best I've seen so far from my phone (about two weeks old) is posted here. Almost 36 hours of uptime! Wifi on the whole time, had a signal for most of it too, but guarantee there were some times that I didn't (because I was trying to use the phone then). This includes time spent playing some games as well. I've fired up Osmos HD, Everlands, Swords and Soldiers, and Draw Something at some point during that charge for at least a few iterations of play on each game. Decent amount of browsing, including hits from Google Shopper for some price comparisons. I'm syncing one Google account and one Exchange account, with black wallpaper, auto brightness (not tuned) and the calendar, news and weather, settings, and prepaid usage widgets. Stock ICS and unrooted.
i have ext battery and can run (what seems like) forever

Fire HD 8.9 battery life after CM10/10.1 installation

Since there is no Q&A sub-forum for HD 8.9, posting here.
I am planning to buy Fire HD 8.9 for my parents and was wondering about battery life. How much of an impact do you guys see with CM10 or CM10.1 over stock with regular use?
I have an HP Touchpad with CM10 and battery life is really bad compared to original WebOS, which is okay with me as a power user but my parents might not like charging a tablet twice every day.
Thanks.

No. Never more than 9 hours here. Usually I read stories with about 10% screen brightness for about 5 hours and 3 hours for web surfing before I see battery low. I renamed phone.apk and phoneprovider.apk as I saw cell standby is listed number 1 in battery usage. Some people say they don't affect battery but I disabled them anyay. The good thing is this one charges faster than ipad.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD using Tapatalk 2
from my experience, battery life is good on normal use, on par with stock OS(less than 10%/hour on reading/web).
however, horrible battery drain happens on standby, about 0.5%-1% per hour -- the tablet loses 1-2 hours usable time each day when its in idle.
to compare, on stock OS stock settings, its about 3% per day,
and once I disabled most amazon services, the standby power usage is unnoticeable, sometimes I even see a battery increase when wake up....
Thanks. The battery drain on idle is an issue for my Touchpads as well with CM10, never lasts more than 30 hrs with just WiFi on and everything else off, including screen.
Since CM / ROMs are for power users I don't think battery optimization is much of a priority to the devs. My father isn't going to use it more than 2-3 hours in 2-3 days and then it doesn't turn on at all after 3 days even if it was 100% when he put it down, he might get alarmed.
Thanks, I'll stick to the stock if I go with HD 8.9.

I think his answer was perfect. There's good battery and bad battery, it's as simple as that. X hours of playing/watching X by somebody tells me nothing about a gazillion other factors playing a role (or not). This tab has a not so good battery but it isn't terrible either.

I think your right i was going for longer battery life in the end. the yoga suppose to get 10 hr of video time or more bet gamming probally be 6-8 hour range of midlle of the road games.
I use it for reading, web browsing, email and such. The occasional puzzle game or chess. I'm getting about 3 days out of it. So it's not great but as I use it at home and the charger is always close by, screen resolution was the more important point for me. Before I had the yoga for about 2 weeks before exchanging it for the g pad. The yogas battery life was just amazing compared to the g pad, but the screen has 100 ppi less, which made reading really straining to the eyes in my case. Just to give one of hopefully many examples that can help you decide based on your own usage patterns.

I've rooted and stuck Madhi rom (4.4.2) on mine. Using it for nearly a week now, but the battery isn't brilliant. Had a China 8" tab before which also wasn't good with battery (and an awful ppi for that matter).
Roughly my usage is similar, or just a bit better than erwaso's. I get a bit more on certain things like video playback as I've optimised the Build.prop to save on battery. Also I've used an app to stop all major wakelocks and throttled the cpus to run slightly lower clock speed and on demand.
Personally I don't like any Apple products, but you can't beat there tablets for battery life; Android is too power hungry!

Yea, i don't read i never learned lol no i don't read anything other than an article on the web. I wanted it for movies and light gaming via fpse and other emulator's so the yoga's long battery life was what i was going for. The toshiba has slightly better cpu and screen but the battery life reports on review varies alot 200 250 was my price range also considering the nook hd plus get decent battery life on the reviews and has full hd screen. I
'm leaning towards that 180 i can pick it up tomorrow. The other's i have to order online. Ty for your feedback.
I also saw microsoft store has dell venue 8 pro on sale for 230 it can play older pc games like cod modern warfare and such it get 8hr battery life. Its the last tablet for me for awhile my wifes cutting me off bounced around tablet to tablet and phone to phone. lol so i'm sure as soon i buy 1 I'm going to wish i would bought a different 1 lol

What battery issues?

Reading all the reviews and comparisons of this phone to other flagships before I bought it, I thought I was going to be settling for sub-par battery life. I bought an extra charger for work so that I could make sure I had enough juice throughout the day.
But now, I feel like I've been lied to. This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a stock ROM. I'm never below 70% at the end of the day, and I average about 4-5 hours of screen-on time. My battery usage screen usually estimates that I'll get between 28-36 hours of life out of my battery. I charge it every night, so I haven't tested that.
Am I the only one? Did I get lucky? I really don't understand all the fuss I've seen about the battery.
I've only had mine a couple of days but it seems okay to me, better than my HTC One (m7). I ran it down to 20% last night after loading programs and playing with it all day, several phone calls, streaming Rhapsody for a couple of hours. I didn't check the stats but it was off the charger for about 14 1/2 hours. I have marginal cell service in the building where I work and that has always contributed to excessive battery drain. Overall I'm pleased, haven't had an LG phone since the flip days.
I think many people having battery problems are with T-Mobile. They've got a piece of support bloatware that kills the battery, and people in areas of poor coverage (T-Mobile!) will consume a lot also. Plus, both these things heat the phone up so it will charge slower.
My battery drains a lot faster when I setup few things.
In smart lock set trusted places. (this keep on checking for location every few minutes)
Enabled google now for all screens .
With these two the battery drained like open tap; disabled both of em and its very good for such a screen.
My G2 had much better battery life than the G4 . I've debloated , factory restored, turned off location, lowered brightness etc... My free battery will be coming shortly so I hope it is better
This should help answer your question. I have the worst screen on time with this phone, I hit over 3 hours maybe twice. 2 hr 30 mins is usually all i get. I attached 1000 screenshots to prove that lol. Get 4 hrs SOT easy on my M9 and Nexus 6. Fortunately, standby time is glorious on this phone.

Definitely not the g2 battery, but more than sufficient. Usually charge every other night 3-4 hours of sot. Minor debloating done.

I get the same battery usage with the G4 "stock" as I did with the G2 "ROM'd and Rooted" which I would assume after the G4 is ROM'd and Rooted it will be better.
I went almost 4 days at one point with out charging my G2. Granted it was lighter use, but still.

This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a smartphone, period. And although I haven't been around for awhile, my first rooted smartphone was the HTC Evo, and there have literally been hundreds in between then, and now. So it's safe to say, that I've got my experience to be able to judge what's good and what's not. And although it's just my personal opinion, or I just got LG's one and only "super" smartphone that no one else got, and my battery is unlike anyone else's, it's highly unlikely. This battery is the shiznit, hands down. Not to mention, the LG G Pad X8.3, not to be confused with the older LG G pad 8.3, also has amazing battery life, and pretty much is just awesome all around. No lag, excellent wifi connection, excellent cellular reception, and, the specs are up to date if not advanced. Lg doing their thing right now, we just need to figure out a bootloader unlock and root, and we're good to go.

Yeah, this sounds like the kind of experience I'm having, which doesn't seem to be typical from what I've read. Maybe we're just lucky.
the only time I get crappy battery life is when I am at work and that's a weak signal area. While I'm at home I easily get 4 hours screen time and still have around 20% battery left. Very happy with the battery life.
Battery life reports are always going to be subjective. You never know the full use of a device. Most people focus on data, WiFi, brightness, sot, GPS, and Bluetooth. Never really here much about what apps and what's running in the background.

Agreed. I average only 2hr 30 mins SOT, but then, I keep my brightness on 100%, wi-fi always off. I go same settings on other phones, but get like 4 hrs, but weaker standy-by time
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've been so surprised with all the people screaming about battery life and I'm like really? Because I haven't been able to kill this thing in a day yet. I am rarely below the 40's % mark at worst when I go to bed. I got the spare battery kit from LG but I haven't had to use it once. I suppose I'm just not as much of a power user as I once thought lol.
For those getting great battery life with 4+ hours SOT, out of curiosity, what screen brightness are you guys using? Do you have auto-brightness enabled? What apps are you actually using? etc. etc. etc.
I have found that the battery life on this phone, so far for me has been about average. No worse or better than I expected. I typically keep my brightness around 50%, have wifi on, and play a fair amount of games. I think the games running are what kills it for me for the most part. If I'm not gaming I can't possibly see using 4+ hours SOT. I get bored of reading things fairly easily.
That being said I just killed a bunch of bloatware verizon had manifested into my phone for no other reason than to make us angry. I also installed greenify to stop some background apps from running. I'm very interested to see if it gets better going forward.
Use lux from the app store for auto brightness. You can tailor to your preference.

Is this mobile phone going to suit my needs ?

Hello everyone, for about 2 years I was on iPhone, now I'm going back to Android. I'm seriously considering buying LG G4, but I'm not completely sure that it is right choice, so I would like to have feedback from real users, as I believe they're much more accurate than reviews on portals, magazines etc. So here is what I'm looking for ordered by importance:
1. Most important thing for me is that mobile is reliable, that it doesn't crash often, doesn't heat much in normal usage (I don't plan to play HC games on mobile, but I might form time to time), etc.
2. Battery life - I'd like to squeeze out 24hrs of usage, or at least 16hrs. By that I mean I'd like to while going to work listen to music surf on 3g, or watch youtube video, and when I'm returning from work I'd like to do those same things without fearing that battery will die. (during work I don't use mobile that much)
3. I'd like my mobile to be good enough 1.5/2 years from now. I don't expect it to be excellent or anything like that, but I'd like to have mobile which in 2 years from now will be ok for let's say baisc day to day usage (by basic I mean listening to music, reading emails, browsing the net, watching youtube etc.)
4. Screen quality
My biggest concerns with G4 are battery life and screen size (which is too big for me, but this one is personal, I can live with it). Also while browsing XDA I found this tread with many users complianing about boot loops, what's with that ? As I understood first versions of LG have this problem (the ones with 505-509 in their SN).
So based on my needs / preferences do you think I'll be satisfied with G4 ? Also what are your general thoughts about this mobile phone after using it for a while, do you like it ?
No reboots or bootloops here. I've not experienced any drastic heat. My last check of battery stats showed 38hrs with 5 and a half hrs screen SOT. It has quick charge as well in case you do drain the battery quickly so doesn't take long at all to get back to fully charged
Thanks for your answer In the end I'm probably gonna go with Samsung S6 Edge
