Troubleshooting Custom ROM installation issues - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends,
We all love Custom ROMs. Proof of brilliance of Developers on XDA. Many people don't know the correct way of flashing ROM and face various errors during or after ROM flashing. Even most advanced users can face such errors and need to troubleshoot their device.
Since I have been reading a whole lot of such issues here I decided to open a thread to troubleshoot such issues with help of everybody here. So lets get started.......
Before we start
I am trying to help you with best I can (with good experience) and shall not be responsible for any damage you do to your device.
Before flashing anything to your device read, read and read a lot about your device in your device forum especially about
How to recover device from Soft-brick
Bootloaders
Recoveries
Next download most recommended Stock firmware for your device to Computer.
Most important thing here is Bootloader (although most of the times you don't need to touch it at all). This thing can Brick your device . Be very very very cautious about flashing it. Don't if it is not absolutely necessary.
How to flash a Custom ROM
- If you are a new comer (Welcome)
1. Download and install Samsung USB drivers to your PC. Reboot. Connect your phone and check your phone is recognized.
2. Download ODIN 3.09
3. Download PhilZ Recovery 5.15 (Most recommended Recovery right now)
4. Open ODIN. Put Recovery tar.md5 file in PDA tab. Only "F.Reset" will be TICKED and nothing else.
5. Switch Off phone.
6. Put Phone into download Mode by pressing and holding "Vol down + Center (Home) key + Power On"
7. Now connect phone to PC. It will install drivers for your phone. In ODIN it will show connected as Yellow Box with some number.
8. Hit START.
9. After few seconds it will show PASS.
10. Remove your device.
11. Remove battery from phone. Re-insert battery.
12. Now press and hold "Vol Up + Centre (Home) key + Power On". You will enter in Recovery. Congrats :good:
13. Now Reboot System. If it asks if you want to disable Recovery Flash, hit Yes (otherwise on next boot Stock Recovery will come back)
- if you already have Custom Recovery
1. Place the ROM that you want to flash on SDCard (External is recommended)
2. Boot into Recovery
3. a) If you have PhilZ recovery
- Go to Wipe Data/Factory reset
- Clean to install new ROM. Thats it.
b) If you are on TWRP or CWM
- Format all these : /system /data /cache /preload /dalvik-cache
4. Flash the ROM
5. Don't reboot. Clear cache and dalvik cache and then reboot. (not necessary but recommended)
If you need to flash some MOD or OTA update after ROM flashing then
1. Flash the ROM after data wipe
2. Don't reboot to ROM
3. Reboot back to Recovery
4. Flash MOD or Updates
5. Clear Cache and Dalvik cache
6. Reboot System (ROM)
Enjoy the Brilliance of Awesome Developers at XDA :good:

Custom ROM flashing Issues and Solutions
Issues and Solutions:
Aroma installer freezes while flashing ROM or at the end of flashing
Use PhilZ Recovery 5.15. PhilZ v6 is reported to be having issues with Aroma.
Stock Recovery comes back after flashing PhilZ (or any) Recovery in ODIN
Follow the above mentioned method as it is and your problem will be solved. Actually Samsung Stock firmware checks Custom Recovery on reboot and re-write it with Stock recovery. That's why the above mentioned process. It will remove the script (install-recovery.sh) that does it.
I am on MK4 or MKD bootloader. Now what?
If you have flashed Official OTA or MK4 Stock firmware then you are on MK4 or later bootloader which is NOT DOWNGRADABLE (you can't flash any prior dated bootloaders like MJ5). Doing so can permanently brick your device. Although you can flash any Custom ROM that you want and should not face any issues.
Based on your reported issues I will keep updating this thread.

thank you very much for the great help

Of course it will still be stuck, you didn't clean the mess in your /system folder. ) You now have 2.3.6 and 4.1 having wild fun over there.
So, I assume, at this point, you have the stock ROM, with the stock recovery. So, what I suggest is that you read the little tutorial below and follow it exactly as it was written.
1. Download CWM for Samsung Galaxy Wonder from here. (It's also available in the development section here.)
2. Flash it via ODIN, by following exactly the same steps as for the ROM flashing.
3. Enter CWM and:
clear data (factory reset)
clear dalvik cache (under "advanced" menu)
go back one step and under "mounts & storage menu -> select "format /system" option. This step is crucial for a clean install!! Especially when changing Android versions.
under the same menu, go ahead and format /sdcard. (Be careful NOT to format /external_sd !)
At this point, you can choose if you want to flash the Samsung stock ROM again via ODIN or flash CM10 again (If you choose to flash CM10, I would suggest the latest version).
Now, if you want to reinstall the stock ROM:
4. exit from there and put your phone into Download Mode again (Home button + Volume DOWN + Power Button).
5. flash the stock ROM via ODIN
If you want to reinstall CM10:
4. go back to the main screen in CWM
5. go to "install zip from sdcard"
6. browse to the location of your CM ROM and flash it
7. flash the correct Gapps for your ROM
8. reboot
That's all. Good luck!
just wanna add one more thing in the end, if u wanna re install cm10 then install the alpha7 version so u can apply the combined mod which will work only on cm10 alpha7

2 things indicate that your system partition is messed up.
Only boots to recovery
CWM ask to flash root
CWM will ask to flash root, only if it can't find the "root" files in the system partition. If it asks every time, then it isn't able to properly install those root files for some reason.
Download the stock firmware from sammobile.com.
Do a format of your system and data partitions in recovery.
Then, boot into download mode and use Odin to reflash the stock firmware.

T700 Soft Brick

Looks I've managed a soft brick. I've been able to get it back into recovery and I've been able to push stock recovery (and also just tried TRWP). Odin seems to work and the T700 appears to accept the recovery. Following reboot I'm still getting stuck back to the Samsung boot animation but then I'm stuck at the boot screen; nothing past that.
I'm not sure if this should help any, but while in recovery mode the upper corner reads the following:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-T700
CURRENT BINARY: Custom (after flashing TRWP, when flashed with stock it said 'Samsung Official')
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
I would appreciate any assistance and thanks in advance! This is my first soft brick since Eclair!
Have you tried flashing stock firmware with odin? Or restoring your twrp backup?
Firmware, yes. I flashed TRWP to see if I could restore a backup, but after the initial reboot after the TRWP flash the device still returns to the Samsung logo.
Try download mode then restore to stock using Odin and then go into stock recovery and reset then wipe cache and reboot.
Sent from my SM-T800
I've tried that but perhaps I'm not following the proper set of instructions. Would you point me in the proper direction? I won't be offended by 3 year old instruction sets.
(This is stock recovery)
Reboot your tablet into Recovery Mode
Next, take the following steps using the Recovery Options:
– Wipe data/factory reset
– Wipe cache partition
Back to main menu and reboot using the option reboot system now.
If that doesn't do it then I dunno. I know it helped me after messing around with flashing and whatnot.
I don't even bother doing it anymore. I just root stock and add/remove the stuff I don't want.

I decided to walk away from it for a day and some change. In the meantime that allowed for the battery to run out. It shouldn't have had a bearing on the fix, mostly because - well it just doesn't make sense - but after charging full following the drain it took a firmware flash to stock.
I appreciate the sanity check!

[GUIDE] Reflash LEX727 With Stock ROM After LEX720 Update

I flashed the latest 20s Chinese ROM to unlock my bootloader and had trouble getting back to LEX727 19s ROM with a working SIM card, this what I did to fix it.
Goal: Get LEX727 back to 727 ROM from any Chineese Variant (LEX720) with a working sim card.
Logic: We need to get the phone back to as stock as possible so that we can flash dr4stic's ROM That will update from CN5.8.018s to US5.8.019s. First we need to install CN5.8.018s, but we need to do it from stock recovery, to get stock recovery back we use a TWRP backup made by suhridkhan, then copy the CN5.8.018s zip, rename it to update.zip and allow the phone to do it's thing It will take quite awhile to flash the stock CN5.8.018s ROM, but when its done we can then install dr4stic's ROM, but first we need custom recovery again, since we flashed stock recovery when we used the TWRP backup. So we reflash custom recovery (I recommend GrossoShop's TWRP as that is what worked for me, however others may work). Reboot into fastboot, fastboot flash recovery the GrossoShop TWRP, then we go back to recovery. Now we can install the upgrade ROM. Once the upgrade ROM is installed, we can reboot and we'll have a completely stock version of the LEX727 ROM with Stock Recovery. (oobe state)
STEP 1 INSTALL WORKING ROM
1. You will need a working ROM to copy the TWRP unzipped files to the phone (figure this out on your own, but you should already have something that works)
STEP 2 STOCK RECOVERY
1. Restore this TWRP backup
1. Send the unzipped files to your phone in TWRP/BACKUP/<Device_ID>/TWRP. (You need a working ROM to do this with USB, you can try adb pushing the .zip and adb shell unzipping but I had permisison errors. and found it easier to just move the files unzipped)
2. Reboot into recovery, Advanced Wipe everything except Internal Storage (where your backup is)
3. Restore from the TWRP backup, before restarting, do a factory reset wipe and dalivik.
4. Reboot, and you SHOULD be in the LEX727 Rom, however your sim card will not be recognized depending on the modem firmware you came from.
STEP 3 GETTING DOWN TO CN5.8.018s
1. Since we have stock recovery, we can now use it to flash down to the right Chineese ROM version for dr4astic's ROM update to work.
2. Setup the phone, and copy LE_ZL1_LEX720_CN_5.8.018S.zip, then rename it to update.zip
3. Install the update through the phone settings or browser. (It will take quite a while 15ish minutes)
4. The phone may reboot into an endless boot loop where it just keeps redoing the same startup flash, To get past this reboot into recovery and perform a "Clear data" wipe.
5. You should now be in the stock version of LEX 720 5.8.018s
STEP 4 USING THE UPDATE ROM
1. We need to flash a custom recovery again (I recommend GrossoShop's as that is what worked for me, however others may work)
2. Reboot into fastboot and flash your recovery software
3. Wipe everything, data included and reboot back into recovery.
4. adb push the update ROM and install it, wipe dalvik and do a factory reset wipe before restarting.
5. When you tap restart system from TWRP the phone will vibrate for about 7ish seconds, dont do anything, just let it do its thing. It will reboot and go to a black screen, then finish rebooting.
(this is perhaps the most risky step as we are returning to a stock ROM with stock recovery and might loose our unlocked bootloader)
6. You should get everything back to stock ROM with working SIM card and an unlocked bootloader.
note: I will be saving local copies of all the files required indefinitely, so if any of the above links break, I will re-upload.

{GUIDE} - fix for being stuck at samsung boot screen due to rollback protection

Hi all I have been tinkering away and destrying my setup left right and centre to sort this process out but if you're unable to run the latest TWRP for your note from Ian and get stuck at SAMSUNG screen on boot then this process will fix that if followed correctly. This is due to the device's roll back protection.
This process will reset everything back to current date and get everything working on the new Oneui 2.1 base
Process for getting round SAMSUNG screen issue - please read through first and get the files you need before starting. I did this on my N976B but in theory it should work for other 10-range devices, notes indeed!
UNLESS YOUR RUNNING CRUEL KERNEL OR A SPIN OFF, YOU'LL NEED VOL UP AND POWER TO ACTIVATE MAGISK ON EACH BOOT
Needed:
Stock firnware
Magisk app
Twrp image
Pc and odin also patience and a brain lol
-Return to stock by flashing AP/BL/CP&CSC in odin
-Reboot and confirm oem unlocking greyed out, install magisk app and patch twrp image from Ian, also patch your ap file.
-reboot to download, meanwhile get the magisk_patched.tar and insert TWRP renamed as recovery.img in place of the stock patched recovery (keep this one for later)
-In download mode and with auto reboot off in odin, flash BL, Magisk_patched.tar(with the TWRP from Ian in), CP & HOMECSC.
-When flashing is complete exit download mode and immediately hold power and vol up and hold until on TWRP slider screen. swipe to allow modifications, format internal storage and flash multidisabler.
-Reboot TWRP and backup your current patched stock rom. FLASH THE STOCK PATCHED RECOVERY YOU SAVED EARLIER AND THEN FLASH MULTIDISABLER (THIS IS IMPORTANT AS YOU WILL THEN BE ABLE TO INSTALL TWRP VIA THE APP WITHOUT HAVING TO REFORMAT INTERNAL)
-Reboot straight to stock recovery (reboot from TWRP and hold Vol up and power until in stock recovery) and factory reset then reboot.
-You should now boot up as normal, setup your device, in particular have TWRP app and Magisk set up and running.
-Flash the Unpatched TWRP for your device in the TWRP app - reboot TWRP and check the box to kill that annoying swipe to allow modifications and then you are good to flash whatever rom or kernel you want for your device!

Excellent, thanks for testing!!!!!!!
@askmydas
you may find this useful - follow this to get your sec date reset then follow the process spelt out in the thread of the rom you want to use as you may need a different TWRP depending on what sec date the chef of your chosen rom uses.
Hey, when I get to " FLASH THE STOCK PATCHED RECOVERY YOU SAVED EARLIER" I try to do this and it tells me I don't have enough space. Any ideas?

I worked it out, I was trying to install "recovery.img" to boot partition, "recovery.img" needs to be installed to RECOVERY partition. Silly me. Fixed it now, but have a new issue:
After I flash unpatched twrp image through the app, now my phone will only boot into TWRP. I don't even boot with recovery button presses, but it will still boot into TWRP only. Any ideas?
I know this is an old thread, but it may be that my solution could help someone who is locked on the outside of the device (softbrick)
TD,DR: If you have softbrick and you can't boot the device at all, try flashing via Odin the BL, CP, CSC from a stock rom and the AP of another completely different stock rom.
I had an IMEI 0000 issue on my Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950F), using Hades Rom (custom), and I needed to install the stock rom. As I was on the F(15) binary, there were only two roms (SamMobile and Stockrom.net) available for my country (Brazil) with this binary:
N950FXXUFDUD6_N950FOXMFDUD6_ZTO
stockrom.net_N950FXXUFDUG5_N950FOXMFDUG4_ZTO
And a via Frija:
SM-N950F_1_20210717024140_0wmgsx8iwf_fac
And no Combination Rom for that binary
After flashing these roms several times, I was always stuck on the “Powered by Google” screen, even doing cache wipe and factory reset through stock recovery several times. So I flashed the N950FOXMFDUD6, flashed the CF-Auto-Root and was able to boot the device. Once inside I noticed that it didn't solve the problem of IMEI 0000. I tried a few more procedures, ended up restarting to install TWRP, and the OEM is closed!!! (OEM OFF, Prenormal). I start getting the message “only official binaries are allowed to be flashed(recovery)”. I flash the stock rom, but it gets stuck on “Powered by Google” again. I tryed to install CF-Auto-Root and I get the message “only official binaries…” I can't log into the device anymore. So after four days of desperation, trying every technique possible, trying to create the Combination Rom by unzipping the AP file from the stock Rom and modifying the files inside, without success, I finally try a procedure I haven't seen anywhere else: I go to the modified Odin: Odin3_v3.14.1_3B_PatcheD, I selected the BL, CP, CSC files from the N950FOXMFDUD6 rom and the AP file from the rom SM-N950F_1_20210717024140_0wmgsx8iwf_fac
And it worked! I can boot the device
