stock apk? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I hope this is the right section as it is related to development of the stock apk for the t889.
I have decided to get rid of much of the stuff I don't need in a similar fashion to this gent....basically removing all the bs I don't need on my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2367947
Now I don't wanna just go removing stuff and I ah a free used of TI backup so I can't freeze and test that way....
SO what id like is a list similar to this for 4.1.2 but more detailed about what does what. I think eventually I want to make my own rom. I have looked at android kitchen...LOL looked at...any way.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
This all started when I wanted to remove the Dlna.apk and I was concerned about what it may do... based on this...
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?subaction=showfull&id=1329146247
I don't think Ill use that service, but I do use the "share" option when I highlight words to define or speek words I don't know how to say. It is ver helpful and something about the ios devices I miss dearly. DOes anyone know if this apk will affect the share option? I am usint ti backup for full backu pat the moment then im gonna delete it reboot and see what happens. If I had cash I would buy TI and freeze it...I guess there is other options too, but I still want to know what these things do..curiosity killed the cat? satisfaction brought it back..
I bet this is kinda "stupid" to most of you and goes unanswered but thats cool.
Merry metal day! i mean christmas.

Backing Up Everything

Apologies if this appears elsewhere but I have looked without success. If it does then a link to the solution would be great.
Basically I found this site a few weeks ago and since then have been tinkering with my phone. I've tried various roms, added different programs, played about with the settings and so on. Today I have finally got it just how I want it. It is overclocked to run quickly but safely. The today screen is perfect. It contains everything I need including my huge list of contacts. And my theme is spot-on. However usually in life when everything is right something big and hairy appears out of nowhere and dumps on you. Its got to the point where I panic every time I turn it on just in case it crashes and I need to start all over again.
My question therefore is if anyone knows of a utility (or can give detailed instructions) to completely back up the phone. Right down to the user settings, theme and contacts. If possible maybe even to create a rom image of my phone so that if it does ever crash I can reinstall the whole thing from one simple file. I assume this sort of thing must be possible because Kavana and Ricky produce such wonderful roms with various programs, etc pre-installed.
Can it be done? And if so - can it be done by an enthusiastic amateur or do you need to be a tech guru? I should add I don't mind paying if I need to buy a piece of commercial software to achieve this.
GS
Did you even bother to search google for "smartphone backup" ? The very first link that comes up, takes you right to the software you say you need. I apologize for being harsh, but I hate the lack of common sense...
An option
Not sure about the cooked 6.1 Roms. Maybe someone else might know or have tried.
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
I use this and it's well worth it.
if u just mean the saved registry values and what not u can always export the registry so that way if u have to hard reset the phone or if a new amazingly wowlike rom is released and u NEED to flash u can always import the registry values of the chomes and it'll be the way u left it (thats what I do for my myfaves and my programs)

No problem, and you are entitled to your opinion. however its replies like that which stop people making posts to forums like this. Everyone has to start somewhere, and one man's obvious "common sense" answer is another man's dilemma.
As for using google... yep I could have done that but google links to hundreds of pages, some owned by people trying to sell software which obviously means they won't be objective. Others have methods which could damage a phone and because I don't know the writers how do I know which methods to trust? Ergo I decided to come to site I know, with people whose technical knowhow I trust, and to search the forum and then ask them for advice. To me, that is common sense. Isn't that one of the reasons that places like this exist? So non techheads can ask guys like you for help?
No offence intended and, for what its worth, you are one of the guys whose advice on this forum has helped me countless times. So thank you for that no matter what. Without your posts I'd never have got this far in the first place! I mean that.
As for the other replies... thanks guys. I will look into the registry stuff. And I will certainly check out the software link. If I do find some info on google, I hope you folks will help me pick the best method to use and avoid bad advice.
Thanks again.
GS
Okay the Sprite software is perfect. And now I've checked it out maybe my question was a stupid one. Still, its nice to have a recommendation from an independent source. I've been burnt in the past by bad google advice.
Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.

I downloaded the Android Cab file on TIlt 2, n luvn it

I wish all the customs roms that chefs cook up were this easy to do. I was reading on the forum last night about this and came across the cab file version of this install. Its soo easy its pathetic. by the way i have Att Tilt 2 stock rom windows.v.72001a(or somethin) windows mobile 6.5 manilla v.2.1. doing this install made me realize two things. How fast att actually can be at times. this was basically a 90mb. file. I downloaded it with opera mobile 10 on regular service in like 5 mins. Thats pretty fast to me for a phone. i can just imagine if i used opera mini but mini doesnt let store files downloaded to your storage card. which is still cool because cut and paste puts it wherever u want. Second thing i noticed is how much more Informative this forum is. That google android cab is a brilliant piece of work. i dont know how they exactly did it but it works pretty damn good to be not the final version yet. i was skeptical doing this type of modding, since it is complex and looks like your rom being reflashed or something..lol i was like ohhh lord, what i do now..lol but to much surprise, just like the instructions say, it loaded flawlessy, basically. Knowing me, i tried testing all the capabilities of it seeing how far itll let me go. I like the android set up and interface. There are still some things i noticed wasnt working yet. like the wifi. or the keyboard light doesnt come on. it still works though. i havent tried the bluetooth yet. i didnt like that my programs didnt carry over but no biggie since i guess its another format or something the phone is running. Its really cool how the install kicks windows or liniux off and boots up this android rom or whatever. they say its not an emulator or a full blown rom. seems like one to me by how good it works. Also the g sensor needs better way to calibrate. it doesnt rotate really like it should or not fast enough. When u on this though, u are limited to whats on this install. Meaning only using the programs that come on it. Knowing me, i tried going to the app store to see if itll let me download some prgrams. i got all the way to the end pressing download and an error came up on the screen. Maybe its not set up yet in this version to let u add android programs and stuff. which wouldve been insane. But hey, this is free. I definitely have to say how talented the people are that put this together. This is just like running any program really. and when i want go back to windows mobile or touch flo, just soft reset and bam, u back no problems. the first time installing is the longest, not too long though. any time after that, it boots up faster since all folders and whateva were already made. So after soft rest, i can just load it up anytime with the Haret icon just like i would load up Opera Mini. Thats just too cool. Ima fool my friends telling them i got new AnDroid Phone from HTC to mess wit their heads. Im definitely gonna read up alot more on these threads and see if any way to load or download android programs. i wanted the free opera mini 5 one so badly but error came up. force out or something. all in all, Im really liking the setup and the widgets. plus u can change backgrounds with preloaded ones, which seem high quality. just as clear as on tf3d with hdwalls. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to rant and let any skeptical people with Tilt 2 like mines know this is One Install You definitely want to check out. I still have to test somemore on how far the capabilities go when in android mode. Ill keep ya posted.

i gotcha..lol
thanks for the post demandarin
i too am running the htc tilt2 and am rather new to all of this. so it was great to share your experience and concern. so with this android rom you saw that some things are not working. will you let me know when they get all the kinks worked out? please. i am interested. i have my phone dialed in the way i want it now with all that i have learned here, so i dont want to put anything on that doesnt have all the funtionality. so please if you remember hit me back when it is 110percent. thanks!
Doing this install/mod still enables you to use windows. you can now choose which Operating system. if u tired of windows and want to mess around with Android os, then this enables you to. this is still in developement so of course not every single function wrking. its good enough for now. i can make calls, recieve them, go online, go to android app store and download new android programs. I see what you are saying on not wanting to mess up your phone. the install cant get no easier than for this one. basically a new os/ROM without having to flash device. All i do is press Haret exe., like any other program, and it boots XDAndroid up everytime. im still amazed on having it. soon after enough reading and research, i might flash a rom or 2..lol All info needed is right here in the forum. ill keep ya posted, but this is a working version that u can text and make calls, etc...im glad i downloaded it.

Rooting?

Could anyone point me to the correct tutorial to root your HTC Touch Pro 2 ?
I'v been reading up on the android builds past few days. I'm totally new to this.
I got android to work with the project android build. And i want to use Whatsapp.
But it won't let me open Whatsapp. 3rd party task manager is killing it. So i guess its ATK ? But i can't just uninstall it trough settings>applications etc. Same trough android market. I read somewhere you'd have to root it then. But i don't know how. Any help would be appreciated alot !!!.
If i'm not suppose to post this, because i haven't looked or w/e, fine delete this. But i did look. And if been reading alot of topics and iv seen alot of flaming just because of asking a question. might have been a stupid one, but still, people just want some help. Why not help out ? We all start somewhere. And im starting right here. haha.
Oh and if im totally off map by saying rooting, let me know how i can get whatsapp to work. Iv seen it works for others so im just waiting to fix mine. haha.
Anyway, great job on the forum and great builds for TP2.
Peace,
from the spacestronaut.
It is already rooted. Next time spend some time reading

well you didnt search enough nor read enough...and i started by reading and searching (only 2 posts in first year as member)
Like i said before, i did search the past few days, and i did read, but its not like theres a topic out there called "TP2 rooting". Or "how to get rid of preinstalled apps". So cool it. And help me out. That would be greatly appreciated it. i knew i shouldn't expect a mature response...

Well that's the problem, XDAndroid is rooted - but don't expect every app that works on native Android phones to work on these - this isn't exactly an approved or sanctioned port.

im not using the XDandroid build, im using the project android build. And i read somewhere in order for whatsapp to be working you need to get rid of ATK by rooting your phone and then get rid of the app (ATK). So, some are saying it should be rooted. And it's not like no one is running whatsapp on a HTC android mod. it should be working. but i can't seem to get rid of ATK. iv read other could just get rid of it trough settings>applications but i can only delete the updates. Please some real anwsers instead of saying things i allready know.
Hey,
first of all welcome to the xda-developers forum...
like u and i guess everyone i hate answers like some of the ones you got..
i think a froum is made to ask questiuons however that might be about...
and it took me month back in my old htc kaiser days to get the whole android thing.
so when you want to install apps that are not from the store then u have to check one checkbox first.
ull find it under settings->applications-> and there should be a checkbox that says unsigned apps or untrusted apps...something like that.
normally this page should pop up if u click on a app that u have on the sd card...
i hope that is what u asked for...
and the phone is already rooted whatever build u are using
and if u have any questions but dont want to ask them in the forum cuz u might think that u get answers that dont suit ure question just pm me

Hi, i appreciate your response. Thanks alot.
So it's allready rooted. Ok cool. Let me explain. I want to use Whatsapp. But when i open it, i get the 3rd party task manager is blocking it. And im guessing its the ATK. but i can't get rid of it. I know how to install unsigned and untrusted apps. But now i want to get rid of it. haha. Anyway, i shoot you a message maybe tomorrow to explain more i guess. A mod can close this, as i proberly won't get a straight answers anyway.

Your right, i don't know, that's why im asking... smh at the ignorance at this forum.
hey,
ok now i got what ure asking...
so then it is important what method u are using? do you have a system.ext2 file that you load with haret?
or do you have a partioned sd card with the android system on a ext2 partition.
when you have the whole system in a system.ext2 file you would need to unpack it, delete the .apk of the app, and then pack it into a .ext2 file again...
when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

I just sent you a pm. i don't load anything, i start winmo, open up, project android, hit boot, android starts... that's all i do. i don't have a system.ext2 file on my sd. if this method is "wrong" or dated, let me know where to get the newest build. seems like that is the problem ?
hm...so you have to have some files that are behind that...
and i would think that you have a system.ext2 file somewhere...
should be in the andboot folder on your sd card.
but in builds that are used now here that task manager you want to get rid of isnt used anymore...so i would suggest just try the xdandroid build and kernels or the neopeek version which is very fast and you have all files on a spare partition on your sd card.
if you want to get started with the neopeek build just check neopeek.com and then the forum. there are all the build he has developed and instructions how to install. if u have any questions about that just let me know...
i guess art your point it would be the easiest to switch to another build

Listen, i understand your point of view. Iv been reading up on alot of threads in the Touch Pro 2 section. And i saw alot of normal questions being asked. And there was alot of flaming just because of those questions. That's disrespect in my opinion. Because you guys now, just point a newb to the right place. I mean it's not that hard... or is it ? That might not have been in my OP but im sure you understand by now, i do want to learn. I guess if your whole issue is ATK, then just use a newer build. I don't think ATK has been included in any of the 2.2 builds, but it hasn't been in a build for a while. So I'm guessing your build is old if you still have ATK on there.

its a double-edged sword this kinda thing, because its easy for both sides it is just tedious and requires an abnormal amount of patience which some of us (like myself) have little of to begin with
also there are times, like this, that a noob cant simply be pointed in the right direction
all that said i agree with nick, just use xdandroid for tp2 especially since that is what the people around here are most accustomed to
So I am new with the Android world.
I got Blazn up and running, but that's all where I am at lol.
So i see all those extra information that I am not knowledgeable about (not ignorant so people don't start flaming) , so I am going to call myself a NOOB when it comes to Android and learning bit by bit everyday.
So long story short, You guys got WhatsApp up and running properly?
Because I heard back in the 2.1 eclair , WhatsApp was not working correctly.
If working, what alterations have you guys done to make it run (if any needed).

[Q] What do these APKs give us?

Trying to find out what the exact functionality of the following APKs are. Googling/XDA'ing didn't get me anywhere, hopefully you can!
CheckinProvider.apk
CustomizationSetup.apk
CSPeopleSyncService.apk
DownloadProvider.apk
GSD.apk: *#*#INFO#*#* Testing App? Would be nice to remove, since it shows WiFi PEAP/MsChapV2 passwords
HtcDMC.apk: Digital Media Controller, part of DLNA
HtcDirect.apk: HTC Hub?
HtcHubSyncProvider.apk: HTC Hub
MediaProvider.apk
MediaUploader.apk
MessageTabPlugin.apk
MyHTC.apk: HTC Hub
MyReportAgent.apk
OnlineAssetDetails.apk
PCSCII.apk: Connect to PC?
Don't mess with most of them, unless you want to be posting problems later.
Kudos, that you asked us first.
Some things, in Laymans terms, are core OS files. Yeah, in some cases, you can delete them. But..... when you boot again, you're gonna come crying to us.
APK's, are usually programs. Keep in mind, that one APK may be dependant on another. So if you delete one, you may cause another program to crash. Delete the wrong one, and you'll find yourself in a Boot-Loop.
Thx for the reply. I'd like to know as much as possible about all the components, so it would be really cool to have some info on the individual apps. It's not 'just' that I want to remove everything I don't use, I just want to know what it's for.
Boot-loop isn't that bad, though, never had a boot-loop in which I couldn't just reboot it into recovery, e.g. via Android Commander+USB connection.
Well, Ill take a gander, and guess that they are Proprietary, AKA, don't mess with them.
I'm sure some developers know what they do.
CIP; Lgscrhm.apk
Don't mess with it. It's the LG home screen, and if youre not rooted, and you delete it (God knows don't ask, and no I didn't), Basically you go into a frozen HTC screen. Seems LG didn't put any life saving prevention in their code.
Say what? You're talking about the LG homescreen on an HTC device? Either you've found it somewhere and installed it yourself then, or it's not there at all... In the first case, you can remove it all you want, no prob. Doesn't make sense what you're saying. Furthermore, it's not possible to have a non-rooted device and then remove an app from /system/app... And - in case of _a lot_ HTC devies - if rooted, but S-OFF, you'd simply have the old state back after a reboot (doing stuff in /system or whatever on the internal phone memory is not persistent.

Would rather not , but, what I do know, is you just can't go deleting core OS files, just because you can. You're asking for trouble.
A lot of small kids here, who toss their words like spittle in a bucket. Nothing specific mind you, but just spittle. Grannies need to put the nappies back on them
I hear you about the "greater way" , I have PM. Anytime.

[Q] Adding phone functionality to "inactive phone rom"

Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions. First off as you can see from my post count I'm a lurker. I can remove/install ROMs, the basics, but never have I tried to add/remove apps or functions to one. So I've found a ROM I love, but it was designed with inactive phones in mind, to make them into second life usable music/video players. It has no phone functionality because of this. The one I'm interested in is by frickinjerms - Ubersonic - I hope I can modify others work for my personal use. Guess that should be a question too.
Would it be ok to add in phone functionality or would it be easier to find one with that already and just remove the fluff I don't want and add what I do?
As I understand it, I can just add it back in, but I'm unsure what files go back in. Is there a resource that outlines that anywhere, or can anyone throw me a bone?
Is it ok to modify the work of others for your personal use without asking, or should you seek approval first out of proper etiquette?
I've been searching through XDA and other sites looking for some basic beginners stuff for cooking up ROMs, but have only come across limited collections. I'm toying with dsixda's Android Kitchen right now, but would love to find other resources. So any pointers to learning resources would be great too.
Thanks!
For the last one, I personally believe that its not necessary to ask before modifying a rom thats for your personal use because only you will know about it anyway, and people do it all the time
You only need to ask for permission if you're reposting your personal version of someone elses rom

I figured that was likely the case I just wanted to clarify it for myself. I know people put in a lot of work on some of their ROMs and don't want to step on toes.
Thanks for the response.
You know you could use a rom that does have phone functionality. Just throwing that out there.

Whats the point of flavors if you're forced to pick the one you don't like? Just throwing that out there.
I don't think my questions were unreasonable either. I'm not asking for someone to build me something, I'm asking for the fishing pole, not the fish.
