The magenets were just not strong enough in my opinion to handle the bumps I would encounter on the road. I drive an older Jeep Wrangler, it has a very "active" ride and the bumps can be a bit interesting.
So I did some cutting to take off the top of the case so that it is only being used as a ledge to support the Nexus while mounted. Combined with the magnets this provides enough "bump resistance" for me.
I took the front plate off the iOttie and trimmed the back plate down to fit the back of the Wireless Charger. I made it kind of stealthy as you really cannot see the back plate as it hidden behind the locking ring.
It is all held together by SuperGlue and happy thoughts.
Now I just need to find a car lighter plug / cord to power the charger and combined with Bluetooh I will never need to mess with cords while in my car again!

Very cool.
Are those screw holes on the bottom of the charging pad assuming you removed the sticky silicon foot? Did you get a chance to peek inside the charging pad?

Thanks. The screws are hidden under the sticky foot indeed. I didn't take it apart. Thought about it, but decided that I would pass. Hasn't anyone done a breakdown of one of them yet?

Looks good.
How hard was it to take the plate off the front?? Are the magnets really not good enough to hold??

It was a struggle to take apart the iOttie. It is a really well put together car mount.
The magnets might be good enough to hold in a regular passenger car, but not my Jeep Wrangler no. The suspension is too rough and some road bumps can be a bit... fun. Like that dime I ran over the other day. I think it was minted in 1956. The ones from that year are brutal. Surprised I did not break something!

[Q] HTC Elf, Fake Leather Cases and Magnets.. O.o Help?

That subject line sounds almost kinky... Lol. Anyway, before I get off-topic, I just got a cover for my Elf from eBay. Unfortunately, it isn't the best quality, but for what I paid ($9.99 excl postage) it was definitely worth it. With currency conversion and shipping to SA, it came to about R120 where as a local equivalent would be close to R300.....
Anyway, the front flap folds down, hinged at the bottom behind the USB connector, and with a clip that goes over the top of the speaker and over to the back. The clip, however, is not in the right place and so it's very tight. I don't have a camera handy, but here is an image of what the cover looks like:

(please excuse the 'eWWT' name on it, this image is from an eBay listing by Easy World Wide Trading)
I'm thinking about trying to remove the clip that goes over the top in favour of having either two small magnets or two small pieces of velcro to hold the flap shut. Only thing is, either way it would need to go on the front above the screen, one in each corner.
What I'd like to know is this, are those small magnetic pads on the belt pouches (where you must remove the device to use it) strong enough to cause a problem being that close to the device all the time? Another thing to keep in mind is I only have one arm thanks to a motorbike accident, so having a tight clip around the back makes things difficult..
I have a similar Leather case even I would like to know whether the magnet at the back side cause any battery drain or harm the speakers anything..pls Reply
The price is attractive, but the outlook and the design looks outdated

Lol.. Leooooooo, this is a rather old thread... In the end I just cut the flap off and I use it like that. May be considered an 'outdated design', but it's practical and I like it. Still using the same pouch today and I'm happy with it.

I think I found the perfect stand!

http://placewiz.com/Stand.php
Just got it set up with my GT 10.1. The beauty of the stand is the fact that I can have my Samsung Book Cover Case installed on the tab, have the charging cable plugged into the bottom of the tab, and have the tablet on the stand with the volume controls and 3.5 jack on the top. Almost every stand I have found did not have enough room for the connector to be installed while placed on the stand, but this one fixed that for me, at a grand total of $10 on ebay!

Galaxy Tab with stand, charging.
wow that is so awesome!
seems nice... how sturdy is it? did you try any other stands or was this the first one you got?
personally I dont need the ability to charge it while on the stand, so sturdiness is the name of the game for me, so i've been thinking about the Arkon but maybe this is even better... just curious if you tried the Arkon out also?
Regarding how sturdy it is... for me, it's perfectly fine. The problem I found is I keep my desk clean with pledge, which makes the surface too slippery and the stand itself doesn't have any way to grip. I think I will just stop down at the local hobby store and find some sort of rubber strip I can put on the feet of the stand to have it stop sliding. Besides that, I only get a minor wobble when tapping the screen, but only at the top, and only if I press abnormally hard. For $10 you can't beat it.
nice 10char
Just bought one.
That looks really nice.

I have the Arkon, it's very sturdy, very adjustable. It's made of some sort of hard plastic/polymer, with foam cushion layer on the bottom so it doesn't slide and where it touches the tablet. The only issue is the tablet sits too low for the charge connector in landscape mode.
lol, it is a rabbit

Nexus S dock mod for GNex

I'm a long time lurker on XDA and appreciate all the work the developers have done on all the great ROMs. I recently dropped my SGS II and decided to replace it with a GSM Galaxy Nexus and must say I love it.
My son decided to use the damaged SGS II and no longer needed his Nexus S. I noticed the desktop dock he had looked close to the curvature of the GNex. The micro USB connector was about an 1/8" low and needed to move back about the same. I went to work on dis-assembling the dock to make the modifications. Below I have a few pics but I didn't document the actual mod process, if there are any questions let me know.
The back cover of the dock will pull off with work and there are a few screws holding everything together. Once these are removed the dock will pop apart at the seam on the front of the dock. Modding the micro USB is actually pretty easy. A larger opening will be needed to move the connection towards the back and top of the dock.
The GNex will fit in the dock without any other modifications but there will be a small gap between the dock and the phone on the connector side. I wanted a more factory look and decided to thin the plastic a little so the GNex would fit snuggly next to the dock with no gaps. I did this with a fin grit sand paper and a buffing wheel on a dremel tool.
These docks can be found as cheap as $5.00 on Amazon. I purchased this dock at Best Buy for $20.
Hope these help explain what I did.

Shot of how nicely the GNex fits in the dock.
You can see that the phone is charging in the dock.
Modded the opening for the micro USB connector.
A little more sanding and the dock would look factory.
These were taken with the phone while working on the dock.
The bracket at the top holds the micro USB connector in place. A few mods were needed to make it fit the GNex.
Nice!
i just ordered one of these docks from amazon for 7 bucks used. hopefully i can mod it successfully so i can dock my galaxy nexus like u did. very good job though modding it.
Edit: I screwed up my dock bad so it no longer works lol. Oh well. Now I know why I don't do stuff myself lol. Plus I didn't have the drill thing u had.

$10 DIY Car Mount

I just started driving for Lyft so yeah, N7 in car. I'm planning on permanently installing the tablet in place of the head unit, but until I get all the parts I need, I came up with a temp solution.
Total cost of materials is around $10, but with it you get a bag of cereal and a lot of leftover tape. If you happen to have a cereal box and some ductape or Gorilla tape, you can pull this off for around $0. I've made two of them now (improving the design) and i'd guess it'd take 10-15 minutes to make once you have the materials.
Materials:
1 Cereal box
1 roll Gorilla or similar tape
Scissors or X acto knife
Assembly:
1) Cut out a rectangle from the cereal box +2in wide and +1in tall
2) place tablet on cardboard so it is centered horizontally and aligned on the top edge.
3) fold the bottom of the cardboard up.
4) fold the sides of the cardboard over.
5) remove tablet.
6) tape cardboard to retain shape
7) cut out slots for the charger and headphone jack.
8) check fit and make adjustments as needed.
9) Tape newly created mount to car.
10) celebrate with beers.
I'll be honest, it looks like what you'd expect a free car mount to look like, but at night, when I'm driving, you can't tell. I used it last night and it worked great and it's awesome having a tablet in the car. I am using the 200mb free from T-Mobile, so I downloaded all my music at home, and used the LTE for the maps only. Also, it's super easy to remove the tablet, so I can lock it in the glove box or bring it inside to use it.
I'll post some pics later of the tablet mounted in the car.
I'm thinking of connecting the mount to the dash using some straps or Velcro and removing the covering for the headunit. If anyone has any other suggestions on how to mount the mount to the car without using tape, I'm all ears.

Some pictures as the above link don't work
Sorry about that. They show up fine for me. I'll attach them when I get off work.
Slimport, HDMI splitter with fiber audio out put, then a 5.1 decoder with fiber in and sets of rca jacks . I have all of these just got to install with amps and speakers as soon as my mechanical issues are limed up.

Can I mount the phone to a magnetic car mount with no magnet?

I've read the S8 versions are pretty magnetic and doesn't need to stick an extra magnet on the back. Is this true for the S9/+?
most likely. my s8 sticks without a metal plate on the phone. im pretty sure its the wireless charging coil in the phone that is magnetic and allows the car mount to work without a case or metal plate added. since the s9 will have wireless charging it should be the same way.

I have one of the cheap ball type ones, this type is definitely not strong enough and my S9 glides right off (with or without slim case). Maybe a more expensive one with better magnets would hold it.

I have a S9 case, which has metal plates embedded so that I don't need to stick anything on the phone back and use magnetic car mount, also it's wireless charging friendly.

Yes https://www.ipitaka.com/collections...m_source=XDA&utm_medium=lily&utm_term=S9 case, to be honest, it's my favorite case so far.
Seconded on the ipitaka case - I just got it and Love it, before I had a SUPCASE ($15 off amazon) with the metal ring in between the phone and the case and it bulged the case out a bit. The ipitaka case has a very premium feel, I like it a lot better, and it sticks to my wireless charger MUCH better
If you do want to order it you can get 10% off by using my referral link - http://pitaka.refr.cc/christophervincent
