Bad news, everyone! I have an SGH-T999 that I rooted using hxxp://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/
Now I am trying to unroot it using hxxp://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-unroot/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/ so I can get the TMo OTA JellyBean update.
The phone is in download mode but Odin3 v1.85 is stuck at recovery.img and nothing has happened for 10 minutes. I verified the files all matched their published checksums and followed the steps exactly in the rooting and unrooting processes. How do I get out of this without bricking my phone?
Have you tried doing a battery pull and rebooting your phone in download mode?
DONT PULL OUT THE BATTERY, YOU CAN BRICK IT! Hold the power button for 10 sec. And it will safely get you out of download mode. Redownload the files again and try the unroot process all over again.

OMW
Thanks for the replies -- I was able to escape download mode by holding the power button. I booted to CWM with Up Vol, Home, and Power, and did a reset which got me back to factory. However, CWM still causes a failure when trying to process the OTA update? Where do I go from here to install the OTA update from TMo?
You have to install using odin.
Custom recoveries won't work..

I tried the unroot process using Odin -- same process as in the first post -- on my other computer and it fails even earlier at writing boot.img. No idea what to do at this point. Is there a way to remove CWM and replace it with whatever was there before?
Try using mobile odin to revert to stock if your having problems. Flash the stock firmware and itll revery you to stock including recovery I believe.

Thanks, I got Mobile Odin and was able to flash the SGH-T999 ROM from stockroms.net. Stupidly, I thought the JB update from TMo was already being pushed OTA since there was a big update from them that kept failing. Apparently, I was wrong. Guess I will try flashing the leaked ROM, though there is speculation the official release will be pushed in the coming week. Thanks again for the help everyone.
Thanks very much

Can you share how to unroot S3 T999 step by step for the newbie, thank a lot!
I bought a T-Mobile Galaxy S 3 LTE with model number SGH-T999L. I used Odin V3 1.85 to flash TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 10.0.0.
Everything went well but my camera doesn't work. On launching the camera, I get a "Can't connect to camera" error and it quits. The same behavior is observed when using other camera apps. I tried the instructions in this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239414) but it did not fix my problem. I now want to go back to my stock ROM. I successfully downloaded and flashed stock recovery using Odin. However, Odin fails when I try to flash the stock ROM obtained from the samsung website. It gives me a "write failed" error and stops. Any tips or suggestions to help me out would be appreciated. Thanks
Is it supposed to use T999 firmware?
Only odin flash T999L firmware. I dont see it released yet at samsing-updates.com though.
Maybe samfirmware.com? I can look later.

Why not reflash the stock ODIN flash rom and make sure it all works ok for you, that will tell you exactly what the problem is.
If the stock rom is working properly, then there is only one thing left which is the culprit and that is the CM10/AOKP/AOSP
or PORTED roms which many people seem to like flashing.
The CM10/AOKP/AOSP and ported roms are excellent if you are a developer or if you like to do a lot of experimentation with your phone.
So the thing to do now is reboot your phone to recovery mode, do a "Factory Reset", "Wipe Cache", "Wipe System" and "Wipe Dalvik".
When that's done Open Odin and put the stock rooted T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 into Odin's PDA slot, go into download mode
and once you see Odin is connected to the phone start the flash. Have patience for the phone to boot after its done flashing.
Here is the stock rooted Odin flash T999 Tmobile Jellybean 4.1.2 rom that you can download if you like: T999_UVDMD5
Official JB Firmware - Latest JB 4.1.2 Firmware
My suggestion to you is to only flash Samsung T999 Tmobile stock based Jellybean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 roms in the future.
But who am I to say whats best..... This is just my personal opinion...... Which usually is not worth a dime. LOL
Sorry, but untill we know more about it, I would not flash T999 firmware onto the T999L.

I am a newbie. I thought the T999 was the same as the T999L. That would explain why Odin doesnt flash stock T999 onto my device. Can anyone here post a link to the stock SGH-T999L ROM?
Just did a quick check and I dont see that the firmware has been made available for download yet.
If you want stock I would flash one of the stock based custom roms via recovery for now.
Out of curiosity, what is your current baseband version?

I had the same issue with the same phone. Got it 2 weeks ago haha. Did you happen to make a backup first using CWM Recovery? If so, you can just restore that backup and you'll have your camera functionality back. It's pretty annoying switching back and forth from CM10.1 back to stock just to take pictures but Rom manager makes it pretty quick and effortless.
Actually now that I think of it, they prob wont release the original firmware. Seems like the first build is never available, only when an update is released do we get firmware we csn download.
I am working with another member on getting something going for the T999L, but right now we are stuck until a verified safe method of rooting is found. (Dont want to flash a recovery or cf autoroot w/o knowing it wont screw something up)
Itll happen, but we just gotta be patient.
Just reread the op and see that you say you flashed TWRP. So you were able to initially gain root without any problems?

I used Odin to flash Clockwork Mod recovery first. I did not like Clockwork Mod's interface and reflashed with TWRP. I had no problems to gain root with either of these methods. I also tried Cyanogenmod stable 10.0.0 and then 10.1 RC2 without any problems. As far as I can tell, all apps work except for the camera. One word of caution though. As you can see from my posts, I am new and dont know what I am doing. I might have just gotten lucky since my device is still unbricked. I had only one "scary" moment during the entire process. I used TWRP to wipe my phone clean and was stuck with no OS install file. ADB sideload did not work since it could not recognize the device at that point. Luckily, I had a micro SD card lying around and was able to put in a new OS install file using my laptop and then TWRP was able to handle it.

Wish I had made a backup! Could you zip up the files contained inside "/system/cameradata/" folder and post a link here? It would help me and anyone else with the same problem restore the camera's functionality. Mine was failing with this same error. I reverted back to stock, re rooted, then downloaded the flash directly to the phones internal storage. Worked like a champ. I think in my case, there is an issue with the SD card, its kind of old.

I tried to downgrade after the update and failed. My phone was totally bricked, I tried flashing TWRP, Philz touch, and CWN and could not get into recovery or anything. I came home and opened sboot.bin with a hex editor and found that SEAndroid in 4.3 is what allows everything to boot and it is write protected, so what i did was copied the sboot.bin into a MC2 Flashable tar and flashed it with Odin, and it worked. I then flashed the update, flashed Phils touch recovery and rooted my fone, now I am on a completely rooted 4.3
Here is a link to the file I used to Unbrick/Downgrade: http://myfavoritecontractors.com/4.3_Unbrick.tar
Several other people have verified they were having the same problem and flashed this and it worked, they also told me to start this thread so others could fix their fone
im on 4.3 stock i tried rooting with auto root using Odin but it didnt want to root the phone, it worked on 4.1.2 stock but not on this 4.3.. which sucks because i want to go on a custom ROM right now like paranoid android but cant cause i dont know how to root my phone since its 4.3 stock :crying: lol smh
Download twrp tar file and flash it in Odin then flash a stock ROM. That's what I did .

Thank you for this, this is the only rom I can use to get away from the dreaded Kies error screen. However, I'm now stuck on the Samsung glowing boot screen. Any suggestions on how to fix?
Thank you
I have a MK4 tar that is flash able in Odin for those still looking to unbrick (and those who tried getting to my suspended Dropbox. ..) http://www.mediafire.com/download/7viivd985s7cp8l/L900VPUBMK4_L900SPTBMK4_HOME.tar.zip
After flashing a ROM or using Odin to flash firmware I highly suggest a data/cache wipe in recovery. 99.9% of the time it'll fix a bootloop (unless you've gone and corrupted partitions you had no business touching).

You should be able to flash a custom recovery, flash twrp, then go into twrp recovery and flash (mc2 back to stock unrooted with counter reset) you should be able to find that pretty easy and download it
Other than that, if you get the failed update screen, you can use kies

Hello,
So, I have the T-Mobile S4, obviously, and I updated to 4.3 using Kies. Well, long story short, after the updated I couldn't use WiFi at all. I ended up using Odin and putting the stock firmware back on, and that fixed everything.
Now, I rooted it using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980683 but, the SuperSU root isn't letting me use OBackup, now. Before, when I had Superuser, it let me use it just fine.
Is there any way to switch from SuperSU to Superuser? I've been reading a few threads but they are all for 4.2.2 and I'm not sure if it'll work on 4.3. I read on one of the threads to use "CWM recovery" and use Odin and that would work, but again, that's 4.2.2.
Any ideas would be great.
Have you tried downloading it from the playstore?

The easiest way to solve the problem is to re-odin flash stock 4.2.2 firmware.
After that download CF-AUTOROOT and odin flash it.
After that you will be fully rooted and all apps which require root will work again.
Here is the direct download link for cf-autoroot: http://download.chainfire.eu/328/CF...jfltetmo-jfltetmo-sghm919.zip?retrieve_file=1
p.s. you might need to re-flash cwm or twrp custom recovery.
Good luck!

Yeah; I tried downloading it from the playstore, but all it tells me once I open it is that the it is oudated and needs to update. I hit "Update" and then it crashes the app, and restarts the phone into recovery mode with no prompts except "reboot phone".
And the thing is I do NOT want to go back to 4.2.2. I want to find a way back to Superuser instead of SuperSU.

In an attempt to unroot and return to stock for 4.4 OTA I flashed stock firmware and unrooted my device in the process, so far so good.
I reboot my phone after to initiate the OTA but of course I can't download the OTA because my device status is still custom and without root I can't triangle away or do anything.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get root back onto my phone from my phone since I don't have access to a computer where I'm at. I'm basically just screwed and also stuck on MDL baseband with a MK2 build running 4.3 stock so I'm getting no downloads at all. XDA the app itself too 10min to download

A stock firmware package makes the phone all stock. MDL baseband on an MK2 build means you didn't flash a stock firmware. Which 'stock' firmware did you flash?
As to root, did this 'stock' firmware also flash recovery? if it didn't you can download the recovery flashable supersu zip from chainfire's website into the phone and do it that way. Otherwise, I don't think there is a way to get root access from the OS itself, unless you find an exploit that grants su access so you can make system writable and push supersu.

I'm can't remember where I got this firmware from but, it was from a thread within the general section which stated it was stock so I'm just unsure on that part. I will try to root using your information given. This did return to stock recovery as well but when I try to flash anything through it I get a signature verification failure. I've never had this happen where baseband and build didn't match after returning to a stock firmware. My guess is that I just used something I shouldn't have. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, rooting or installing custom recovery needs to be done through a computer. As of this moment, there are no root exploits that can be done via the phone itself. I'm sorry.

That's because you need a custom recovery, it's why I asked whether the firmware you flashed replaced recovery or not.
As vigz said, you need a computer to at least flash cf root with odin.
