Kernel wakelock mdm_hsic_pm0 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I've been having this kernel wakelock for a while already AND it's been happening even after getting a new note 2 from T-Mobile (using warranty).
Basically I think I narrowed it down to it happening whenever I receive a new notification (missed call or new text) and I don't check it back right away.
This causes the wakelock mdm_hsic_pm0 to keep my phone awake UNTIL I do a battery pull.
Now, this wakelock sometimes also appears randomly, so I'm not exactly sure that the notifications keeping it awake is the only trigger. I am on stock 4.3 but it was also happening on 4.1.2 on 2 different phones. This could also mean one of my apps may be triggering it, but I would like to rule out other stuff before I do a hard reset
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I ordered an extended battery but I would like that to be my last resort.
Thank you in advance.

I got that on my Note 2 too. As you already knew, it was totally unpredictable. One day I got a few minutes out of a few hours of total time. Other days it kept my phone fully awake. I searched and read and asked and nobody seemed to know...
I got an extended battery (6200 mA) and forget about it...

I have (had) similar problem that my note stayed awake all the time. My solution is to manually shut down some apps what I don't use but they run in background like whats up, facebook, blink and more. On top of that a manually shut down all google services, samsung push, and more. I noticed that most of those services are automatically reloaded but note2 can go into deep sleep. Another thing I noticed that maxton browser once is used, keep my note awake even after shutting it down via application manager and I need to reboot my phone to preserve battery.

Hi, thanks for replying. I just received my 6200 battery and, unfortunately I guess I'm going to have to do the same.
If anyone else can chime in that'd be awesome. I will see how it goes.

I have gotten this wakelock on the last phone I had (skyrocket) as well as my current Note 2 when using most custom roms. It appears to most often be caused by running gentle alarm on my phone all night while the phone is charging. I would check it an hour or two after unplugging to see if the wakelock was there (with BBS), and if it was, I would reboot, which always fixed it. I am currently using the Skynote Air rom for AT&T (a touchwiz rom) and have not experienced it.

Well it's been a month now and I still have the wakelock. I do have a 6200mah battery now but my OCD still makes me check for it and if I see it I will do a system reboot just to get rid of it for a few hours.
I really don't want to have to resort to rooting especially since I don't know if it voids warranty or whatever. I haven't been into the modding scene since I got my note.
Hopefully someone else can chime in. This sucks

Hi!
I had the same issue on DN3 ROM and Devil Kernel 2.3.2 but I found my own solution:
1. Download the newest modem for my device (Vodafone N7105BUUEMK2)
2. Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
3. Flash new modem
4. WiFi extended settings, switch to never at standby
5. Disable Google to use Wifi to locate position while Wifi is off
After that, phone is sleeping like a baby!

Hi I remember you provided me with a list of modems for s3 LTE.. Those modems were based on regions.. Should I flash the one for my region or any latest ones?
I remember I had the no imei issue while trying to flash a rom and had to fix that by flashing some modem.. I guess after that I am having this issue.

I've come to the conclusion that it is related to Google services. Sometimes my phone will run at 200Mhz and not deep sleep. I checked BBM and no wakelock present... I changed kernels and same problem. I changed to aosp rom and still had the issue. This is related to Google services on this phone... I'm just going to wait it out until the LG g2 pro comes out... Bye bye Samsung.

Well I have a Galaxy S2 which is running MIUI, also based on android 4.3. Only difference is it uses some other version of gapps specific to MIUI roms.. So it's definitely some particular gapp.

So switching roms won't help? I like TW since I have the gear, but battery life is horrid. Sometimes I have to just pull my battery out for a temporary fix after unplugging from the charger. So annoying.

This happened to me when I flashed 4.3 through Odin and then flash Jedi Master x2. Battery was draining 15-20% per hour.
I decided to downgrade back to 4.1.2 following Zephr5 instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566303 by flashing stock 4.1.2 through Odin. My battery life is back to normal now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your test. I followed your steps and it solved the drain. However, when I need to use Google maps it takes a while before the phone detects your location with allowing only the GPS to access your location. Though this is the only solution to avoid the drain unless you want to restart it every time you see the drain appear and have ocd like me to check BBS and wake lock detector to make sure the phone is in deep sleep.

get the better battery stats app and see what's causing your phone to stay awake. Something is causing it to stay awake because your awake time is high even with the screen off. You can also get system panel and monitor it over a few days and see what's causing it. There is definitely an app or process going on that's not allowing the phone to sleep even with the screen off
Also, don't forget to uncheck "use wireless network" in the location menu in the settings. It is a huge battery drainer

Lol..ok. I deleted Social Hub and the Facebook and Twitter tied to it, Maps, and the Sprint bloat. I installed the inverted Twitter and Facebook instead. Maps I just install if I need it. I am using stock email (2 accounts) set to sync at an hour. Like I posted earlier, I don't have sync turned off. I still have the Network Location on as well. Really that's it. The last 2 should work against me but they havent been so I keep them on. The battery drain on Wifi is really low on this phone especially when not in use so I always leave that on at home.

Well, its subjective but with these SAMOLED screens the more black you have, the better. I also turn off auto brightness because you can manually adjust brightness with it off by holding your finger on the status bar and sliding it left or right. I keep that low unless I need it. I will post a link to those inverted apps. There is a nice black Dropbox and Dolphin Mini browser as well.

Honestly, I got my phone on launch day and messed with the 2 finger zoom in and out and I don't think I have used it 5 times since. I use Opera and Dolphin Mini all of the time. So if you use your task manager to kill everything it is automatically loading processes? This could be a reason why there is such a wide span of battery marks. If you can, try to get some screenshots of the processes that are running. What is your setup? I check my task manager regularly and Widget Locker is the only thing running ....but I want it to be.

Deep sleep issue?

I've had this phone for 3 weeks now from a vibrant, and so far the battery hasn't balanced itself out. I get maybe a full days use out of it. From what I've read that's pretty good for this phone, but I'd like to be able to get consistent use.
I got a little more curious and decided to install cpu spy and discovered the phone isn't deep sleeping. So my question is, is there an app I should look out for that could possibly be running in the background? I've un installed all bloat that came with the phone, turned off sync, etc.
Any ideas? Or any roms that are touchwiz based that are battery friendly?

Heck your running processes to see if anything is running that shouldn't be. Also, there is an app called Watchdog (not the data meter) that can be setup to alert you when an all is using more processes than it should be using.

Yeah fully stock before the ota that was sent out.
I have the same apps I had on my vibrant with an extra game or two.
Mainly gapps, dead trigger, light flow, roku, Nike Running, etc.
I read somewhere that light flow was causing issues when the phone was first released, but so far I haven't seen major drain from that app alone. I turned off accessibility in the respect to light flow just to see if maybe that was the issue a d nothing.
Currently it sits right at 384mz. No idea why.

I forgot about that app. Just installed, I'll try this out and see what I can find.
This app should help you determine what exactly is keeping your device awake and preventing deep sleep.
Not sure what it is as this so the first day I have had this issue but it appears my phone has not gone into deep sleep at all today either. Weird.

Hm, just checked my phone, was interested that maybe the app wasn't reading it correctly.
I remember in the Vibrant, some kernels didn't allow apps to read the correct Deep Sleep stats.

THe difference between sprint version and AT&T should really be the LTE radio that is about it. they have Wifi on all the time so their radio is mostly standby. mine does the same too. I can not believe - with the same apps - how can Sprint version (2 of them) get twice as much batter as mine !
we all bought the phone the same weekend. I even have AT&T and most samsung services Disabled. Looking at the wakelocks - there is something insanely wrong with way GOogle implemented for AT&T vs Sprint. I guess AT&T version is hogging much more esp with JB
by the way, the same comparison exists for IDLE scenario (bed time)

I agree. but not using google now and location services somehoe defeats JB purpose (apart from project butter
the thing that is puzzling is why Sprint implementation with same or even more options has twie as battery life

Actually has nothing to do with AT&T vs Sprint phones. Although, if your phone isn't debloated, then yes, it will impact.
But like I mentioned, 2 identical S3 is impossible. The best example to this, one will handle OC/UV and the other won't (that being 1 example outta 100s). Which also makes it that 2 S3 side by side running the exact same thing with the exact same apps and settings will give different stats.

you should have mentioned this at the beginning. a lot of device issues arise after this firmware update. not that this is a guaranteed fix, but i'd wipe the phone. my wife's s3 began having gps, wifi and other issues after the update. boot into the stock revovery to wipe data and cache. of course this will reset the phone but i'd rather take 30 minutes to restore backups/reinstall apps than deal with update bugs for days on end. my wife hasnt had any problems since i reset it. actually, i went a step further by wiping data/cache, flashing the latest firmware via odin and wiping data/cache again in stock recovery. boom...

I follow this post everytime I install a new ROM. It's a link from Better Battery Stats discussion forum on XDA. It's solved my maps battery drain problem:

Can I Downgrade?

Been searching threads and keep coming across different answers so im not entirely sure of the answer... im currently on the NB4 modem, since ive installed it my battery life has been horrendouuuuus! Phone literally will not last more than 5 hours (if i wanted that id have got an Iphone lol) and thats with very light usage since im at work most of the day... I know its not the Rom im on (INsane Kitkat) cuz ive tried different roms and its the same problem, and the only thing that has changed has been moving to NB4... is it possible to go back to whatever the modem before this one was (no clue which it is) or am i stuck with NB4?

Did you take the OTA 4.4 or are you still on the MDL bootloader with nb4 modem? We need to know this to see if you can downgrade.

Have you tried a different kernel to address your battery issue?
Settings/More about device. If you have done everything manually then you can flash another modem. Flash mk2 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612 ONLY flash the mk2 modem. Open Odin, uncheck auto-reboot and load the modem in the phone slot. Put phone in download mode plug it in and flash the modem. Once it pass comes up unplug phone and pull battery. Go back to download mode and reflash the modem. Reboot and you should be good to go.

You need to do some detective work to find the culprit, I had a similar issue once and was able to track it down to the phone staying awake for ever, like 14+ hrs when I wasn't using it.
One was Ipservice, other was wifi on while on data network.
You can find these when looking at your battery history in settings.
Settings - more - battery - tap battery graph at top to see the battery history.
It will look like these samples, here are some before and after screen shots.
Also d/l CPU Spy, it will help track your cpu usage vs deep sleep mode.

That's the battery hog you want to tackle.
Make sure in wifi advance settings that wifi in never on unless plugged in.
If you have it checked off already toggle it on then off.
If that doesn't do it with wifi turned off do a battery pull for one minute, then replace battery start phone and let it sit for a while, then check your battery history and see if it's still running.
There may also be an app or setting in Google location that's keeping it on.

Try reflashing your Rom, or try Fenny's stock base Rom just so you can troubleshoot your issues.
I'm on Fenny's v. 1.2 with no mods. On a heavy day with milk music playing for 2 hrs I'll get 12 to 16 hrs, on light days 20+ always have battery to spare.

Sure way to get sound back is to go back yo 4.2 stock and root again then flash the mk2 modem only. Don't worry about voiding your warranty. You will be fine till you decide to reset everything.

It was happening to a lot of us when we updated to the mk2 modem with the mdl bootloader. You'll get your sound back when you back get to stock. All you have to do after that is flash the mk2 modem twice and I also recommend Ktoonzes kernel.

Download and flash the mk2 modem.bin only. Flash twice so it sticks. You should have working sound.

OK. I'm going to look into it right now and get back to you shortly. I remember other people having the same issue as you. I can't remember exactly how they fixed it but the bootloader is tied to it all. Try flashing the MDL bootloader only. It should be included in the root MDL thread.

Good ol rooting questions

Hi guys
I dont mean to ask questions that have been answered or sound like a total noob. I have a stock s III with 4.4.2 and the gps is just GARBAGE. Im so mad at it. I saw a smiliar thread on this but my situation is a little different. I want to fix it. Whats the best rom to run on my phone that wont require a lot of work/maintenance. I had the OG epic and was constantly working on it to keep it tolerable before i got this. is 4.4.4 safe and mostly bug free? Please let me know and thanks for the help. Links with instructions or youtube videos are much appreciated.

If you're on the ND8 modem, try NDC. Or vice versa. I'll get back to you with the name of an app that *could* help.
Have you tried in the stock dialer ##72786# and then update PRL and Profile?
Those are about the only thing that might change your GPS performance unless you get into experimental file tweaking, but I can't help you there.
Is it the actual GPS that's the problem or the mobile data? If your mobile data is weak, Google Maps won't work with or without a GPS signal.
Personally, I doubt if any other ROM would make a difference.

I read some crazy stuff about GPS issues on the Web, when they first started being posted on XDA. One being that the issue related to loose screws. Said to take the back off the s3 and tighten the screws in the back (like 6?). Didn't bother to check into it, but stranger things I've seen/heard...

Im stock so idk what my modem is. Ive tried the prl and profile update several times. Its not the mobile data network cuz its ****ty even with wifi. It started acting up as soon as the phone updated to 4.4.2. "GPS" was changed to "Location" and everything related to the two just works like crap. Ive seen a lot of other ppl with the issues.

yes GPS was changed to Location but you have the option to use high accuracy, power saving or only the gps....and you will know what modem you have even on stock if you have sprint its ND8 if you have boost or virgin you have NDC
Ok. I have sprint. And ive tried all those settings. I guess to be more specific. It has no problem finding me. It has problems following me. So itll find me and set my route but when i hit start navigation itll take the arrow thingy that represents u and jump to another spot. Like itll put me in the middle of a field. And it wont matter if im driving or what my signal is. Itll stay in one spot. ive uninstalled app dates. Uninstalled google maps it self. Tried other navigation apps. And nothing.

just look at the additional options part when you make a reply...there is attach files and manage attachments button....and this is on the computer once you click manage attachments you can upload basically any file but some can be "to big" for the file type and wont upload but once you upload the pic press close window text and then submit your reply or preview it just to make sure it's there

I would do what I and others have suggested several times in extreme weird situations like this. Start back completely fresh:
Assuming you have a 16GB SPH-L710.
1. Backup everything you want to keep from your phone and internal storage to your SD card or computer.
2. Download the stock ND8 tar in the development thread (non-original). Extract the tar from the zip you download. Doubly check the MD5 hash of the tar to make sure what you downloaded matches what it's supposed to. You might need to run a search on that thread for MD5 to find it.
3. Download Odin v3.07 and the most recently available tar.md5 of Philz Touch Recovery.
4. Charge the phone full, turn off your phone and eject the SD card. Keep the SD card out for the rest of this.
5. Put your phone in Download mode: hold Home and Volume Down, and press and hold the power button at the same time until you see anything on the screen, then let go of all of them. It should say on the screen to press Volume Up "to continue". Do this.
6. Run Odin v3.07 on your Windows PC.
7. Plug the phone into the PC with a known good USB cable. After drivers load, Odin should show something like COM: 5, meaning it sees your phone.
8. Click PDA in Odin and direct it to the stock ND8 tar.
9. Uncheck Reboot in Odin.
10. Click Start. This'll take 5-10 minutes.
11. After done (Odin will say successful) unplug phone from cable and remove the phone battery to turn it off. Put the battery back in.
12. If you want to be able to root and make and restore backups, repeat steps 5 through 11 for the Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5.
13. If you want to root, boot into recovery (same as booting into Download mode but Volume Up instead of Down), click Advanced in Philz, and click the re-root option.
14. Before you do anything else with the phone including before putting the SD card in or installing apps, test the mobile data and GPS.
If any problems with mobile data, ##72786# in the stock TouchWiz dialer and then update PRL and Profile. That happens sometimes after Odining a stock tar or flashing a ROM.
If your problem is solved I would backup everything from your external SD card that's still removed and reformat it. That has solved some weird issues for myself and others, too.

I read a few other posts about terrible GPS, and it sounded like a bear to resolve. Never had a problem with GPS. Works perfectly (knock on wood). I went back through the posts and someone had mentioned that they fixed it by turning off Google location (in Google settings). They later turned Google location back on and (still) no longer had the problem...
Wondering if you had tried that?
