Hello N5 owners! I had a curiosity recently of using a Kenu Airframe and a Nexus 5 Wireless Charger as my car mount build. I went and bought the products and finally as soon as they arrive and test them, I can proudly say this TRULY works as a daily driver!
Here are some pics of how it would look and hold up the N5 charger:
This is a video demo I uploaded so you can see how it would look in action:
Sorry for the poor quality.

i really wish there was something similar in functionality and ease of use, but doesn't cover the air vent. i hate covering up the air vent.
Thanks for the review. I have the Kenu I've been using. Looks like I have to get the Nexus charger. I already have 3 of the Nokia. I hope my Diztronic case is thin enough.
Where are you getting power to feed the charger. Does USB provide enough juice??
Use the same N5 wireless charger, but a different mount:

Great thinking! I was toying with something like this and you already did it! lol My only question is if any cases would work or not. I do not have the new wireless charger, now you gave me a reason to buy one and test it!
Nice solution.
Can easily be modified with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Nok...3091?pt=UK_Holders_Mounts&hash=item5401f82763
But are stock magnets strong enough to hold phone on rough road?
thanks for the comments. I gave it a test drive today. Where I live, the roads are pretty messed up, so it managed its grip nicely.

This is a pretty awesome idea, this is pretty much exactly what I want. Hesitant over the air vent though.
Asking for one of these for christmas: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IOQ3K6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl
But this is an awesome alternative, would feel bad ditching that mount though. The charging for it is an awesome idea but albeit a bit more on the expensive side.
This is really great clean and simple.
Beat me to it OP! I found elsewhere someone modded a qi car mount and it gave me an idea to do exactly this with my airframe! Unfortunately I don't have the Google charger yet lol. How well does the magnet hold the phone? I would like to be able to drive without issue, but with my case on as well. I drive on smooth roads but occasionally bump here and there (I dont slow down comoletely for speed bumps)

i have an airframe already (the best in car holder ive ever invested in) and aiming to get the wireless charger in the new year. Now providing the USB cable gets enough charge from the car its an amazing, no-worry way of chargin whilst on long journeys, plus it will ensure that i dont forget a charger again (i'm notorious for leaving chargers at home when going away)

I know, it's not an official bike mount, but I have this for all-purpose holder.
And its really holding quite good.
I use it on my desk, in the car and sometimes holding my compact camera on a pole.
I bought it on e-bay (slight cheaper than from them).

I'm looking for a bicycle holder that is waterproof, has a firm grip on my Galaxy SII which has an extended battery (this one), and that optionally opens easily for touch-screen use (might be far-fetched already).
It needs a very very tight grip, so I can also use it on scooter/motorcycle on very bumpy roads...
Most interesting so far is this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004Q4Q6QS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=stdscaba-21
I think the extended battery will fit and it won't shake off my steering wheel.
Any other suggestions?
I bought that mount from Amazon as I was also looking for a waterproof bike mount. It was absolute rubish and I returned it for a refund. About 3 times too big, just completely not designed for the SGS2.
You could get a baby seat for it and strap it in the back?

No its not. I bought that dealextreme mount and don't recommend it. It snaps on quite tightly to the S2 screen and could cause scratches (maybe if you have a screen protector it will be OK).
However I have this one from utimate addons and its very good.

The downside is the battery will only last for rides up to +/- 1.5 hours. so you'll need a modified charging cable and an external battery.
Im looking for a cheapo mount for my EVO for my patrol truck...... Stumbled across this chinese thing on ebay...

It's been my experience that cheap car mounts just suck, whether it's the vibration and makes the phone bounce up and down, or the thing just falling apart.
I went ahead and bought the HTC official car dock for the EVO and I absolutely love it. Keeps the phone perfectly still and automatically launches the car application when inserted. It's pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for.

If you can spare the CD player slot of your car, you might want to consider the CD slot mount from Mountek:
www.mountek.com
It's very inventive and works fine.
I got one each for my girlfriend (who has an EVO 4G), her sister (EVO 4G), and my sister (iPhone 4), and they all love it.
I am using the Scoth Reusable rubber sheet. A small 1x1inch piece holds the phone on the flat surface, and with a bigger "pad" it will provide greater security. Plus its not ugly or complicated, just a piece of adhesive rubber that wont leave any residue on the phone.

I have a Mountek MT5000, the build feels cheap but it works as advertised. If the ride starts to get rough, expect the phone to jump off the cradle. What I do , is I use the charging cable, loop it on the phone to hold it in place. Ghetto but works.

Just received my Exomount last night. It really works like it shows on the video. I had it mounted on my windshield on the way to work and right now I have it suctioned to my laminate desk at work holding my Evo while I listen to Google Music. I bought mine from one of the sellers on Amazon for about $25 shipped. My coworker saw it this morning and is going to order one as well.
I turned a few corners at moderate speed and went over some pretty big bumps... the thing did not move one bit.

As you know the car dock also use the pogo pins, so maybe that also true for that dock, and again the OTA stopped from what I understand till the fix for signal issue in sleep mode.

No pogo charging, but I've got two and they are by far the best dock I've used so far. Also cheaper than dirt.
Arkon's Mobile grip is a good choice for the GNEX, they have a variety of mount bases (dash, windshield, lighter socket, cupholder, etc) and they're reasonably priced.

Magnet Mount
Magnet mount. I can't post an outside link but search for magnet mount at harbor freight to see it.
$4.99 at Harbor Freight. Small, Unobtrusive and works great. You can even put the little metal phone piece in between the phone and a case.
I hate those bulky plastic things.
I got the one from Verizon store and love it! Its perfect, fit and design. It don't vibrate when driving like all the ones I had in the past.

I'll try and get a video today. It's pretty sturdy so I don't think it'll be an issue even in my rough riding off road vehicle, but we'll see. I had concerns before I ordered it, but I figured for around $10, it was worth a shot.

How's the build quality? I bought a random car mount from a chinese website, after 2 weeks of usage, the suction cup broke off the car mount.
Very pleased with it. I bought two versions; the "short" one and the "long" one. If you poke around the sellers store you'll see. The short one is better IMHO. The long one can jiggle just a little do to the way the arm adjusts. The short one is pretty solid. Suction cup part is beefy and not going anywhere. I did break the little tab off the top/side you are supposed to push to help get the phone out, but that's because I was being unreasonable on how hard I was pushing it. I tried shaving the crap out of the holder to make it fit the extended battery, then shoe-horned it in there. Then it was stuck LOL. I broke the tab getting it out, but it's still very usable, and I was pushing too hard.

i have an arkon mount now, it's just a little too small for the gnex in a case, but it fits. it's a PITA to get in and out of the mount, but, i will say that the suction cup and mount itself are excellent quality and work great. i have had this mount for about a year and it has fit 3 different devices now, been through a few harsh seasons and i have never had it fall off. the arkon mounts are very much worth it. i think i paid $14 for my mount.
i have the diztronic case and arkon flat mount and it is snug but works great. a pogo pin mod for this setup would be awesome. please share if you get it done!

I was also looking for a minimalistic mount for my phone. I hate those suction cup and dashboard mounts so I got the tetrax xway and I love it. It mounts nicely on my dash near and blends into my stereo. Having the little metal nipple on my phone is a bit annoying but the convenience of quickly and securely attaching my phone to my car is worth it.

They are using different kind of technology that doesn't create strong magnetic field. Each holder has 4 tiny magnets.

I've been using these magnet mounts in my car for a couple years. They have worked great on:
HTC Wildfire
Optimus 2X
Galaxy S3
Navigon SATNAV (much heavier than a smartphone)
Walkman MP3 Player
Anything with metal in it like a pen!
Nothing has ever fallen off even over potholes and rough country tracks. All wifi 3g bluetooth are unaffected but cant verify NFC as I dont use it.
The only glitch I spotted was that the orientation sensor on the wildfire didnt respond (if I turned the phone from portrait to landscape whilst attached it wouldnt rotate the screen), but the other phones didnt have that problem.
I love it. Even though my magnet is larger (about the size of a 50p), its discreet and effective. I would recommend to anyone.
I have always used the stick on ones not the clip on, but as long as they clip ok to your vent and you dont blast hot air directly to the phone it should be ok.
I use their X-Way model as part of my near perfect car mount solution.
So obviously, it all starts with the Tetrax X-Way. I mounted that directly to one of the vents in the middle of my car. It does block the vest quite a bit, but it's the perfect spot for me and doesn't involve any adhesive on my dash. At first, I tried attaching one of the little nipple things to the back of my phone directly. While this worked, it drove me nuts that I couldn't lay my phone flat on a table anymore. This became a problem when I accidentally bumped my S3 while it was sitting on a table and since there was less friction now, the thing went flying. So not good.
My solution was to pick up a dirt cheep slim case. That's how I ended up with the elago G5 Slim Fit Case. With the nipple attached to that, I could just slip my phone in/out of that and leave the case sitting in my arm rest compartment when not in use. Now I had the awesome form factor of my S3 and the ability to mount. So the next issue was the connection.
Like almost everyone else, I was using the cigarette lighter along with a curly charging cord that was 5x longer than it needed to be. Worse, the giant power wart that was now sticking out of my dash. Not only was this ugly, it was a pain in the but to store. What I really wanted to use was a small USB cable, 6-8 inches long, that could fit with my new case in my arm rest and a way to ditch the giant dash wart. The cable is easy enough to find, but how do I plug it in? With the Griffin Powerjolt Dual! While there are a bunch of USB port adaptors floating aorund, this was the first I found that would actually sit flush against the dash. This means I wouldn't have any stupid wart thing to deal with, the look of my dash wouldn't be thrown off, and since I don't smoke, I could just leave it in full time.
The big win in all of this is two fold. First, I could ditch the bulky plastic car mount garbage for a few thin and easy to store version. Second, I did the same thing (but with a different case) for my wife's Galaxy Nexus. Now we can both use the same mount depending on who's driving (or if we pick up a second X-Way, we can both charge and mount at the same time thanks to the dual ports on the Powerjolt) and save even more room in the car since we didn't need two giant device specific car mounts. The other minor bonus here is that the X-Way came with enough of those attachment nipples that I should be able to roll along for a few years using the same mounting system across multiple new devices.

My friend has this solution for his BB and loves it. I wasn't willing to pay the price the local Best Buy wanted. I found a different magnet system at my local Bell store.
Something similar to this. I stuck the large magnet to my dash and the other magnet is on my case. I've had zero issues with NFC. Bash cash mount kit imo.
Hoping to receive mine soon! Anyone else using it and has more thoughts to share?

So I got the vent mount version and it works great in my car. In my truck the clip does not fit the vent. I placed the circle towards the top of the phone like it says and it hangs in portrait. In the video it shows it going between portrait and landscape, it doesn't do that. You get one orientation unless you put the connector in the middle I would guess. Other than that it is perfect.

Does anyone have a design for a stand that you can attach the Nexus Wireless Charger to?? I want to get one printed but have no clue how to design it myself
EDIT: Found what I'm looking for

It took me about 3 hrs to hunt down that design because I had no clue where to look. You can always commission someone to design it for you
Nah I got the design and have access to a few different 3d printers in class. Post your results of what you get when it's done!

Found a guy on Reddit who has access to a printer in his lab. Working on details to get one printed! Will post back once it's all done and received.
That looks great!
I'm also curious if anyone's created a version like this for the car.
I just got my Nexus Wireless Charger recently and have been looking at different options on how to mount it to my car dashboard without doing any permanent modifications. This printed dock/stand looks like the right idea.
I got a quote for this thing this morning and they want $300 to print it because it's a solid model rather than shelled.
Something to keep in mind before you guys get your hopes up.
Might contact the creator and see if he can edit to make it hollow?

Hey Guys,
We have a Makerbot 2X. Happy to help prototype anything you need!
I'm sure the higher up's wouldn't mind.

Thanks Weston, I found a friend local who has one and I'm getting a lesson on how to use it Saturday to print my own. Once I do that, a designer friend of mine are going to sit down and refine the design to clean it up and make the stand as stable as possible
I just had one printed by a co-worker and love it. The most difficult part is getting the cable through and it cuts 6-8 inches off of the cable which is already rather short for the official nexus charger. Just keep that in mind.

prototyping right now and it looks like the angle is a bit steep but I'm just doing a rough draft
ive been thinking and i think it would look better and be cheaper if i could redesign it like the guy who made his own wood charger. buy some strong magnets for the nexus 5 back and use a cheap disassembled generic qi charger. then you wouldnt have to buy the expensive nexus 5 charger
