What is the difference between doing a factory data reset in the settings menu and doing the reset in recovery?
I have a T999 that is on stock 4.1.2 and rooted with CF-Auto-Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963806
I am giving this T999 to my wife and want to wipe all my stuff from it so she can start clean and add what she wants so I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this.
Also, what's the deal with the flash counter? This phone and my T999L have been rooted so they show 1 and also under settings>about device>status, it shows the device status as "Modified". Other than for warranty reasons, is there anything else to worry about with these not being on 0 and Normal?
Both phones were bought used on eBay so there is no warranty but I was just wondering if it will prevent updates or cause any other issues. Any info would be appreciated.

If you're just wanting to "reset" for your wife to use, the reset from within the phone settings is good enough. The option in recovery...gives you more options, such as deleting the contents of the internal sd.
Flash counter is, as far as I know, just for warranty purposes.

Thanks. Guess I'll go with the reset option from the phone settings.

I had the same problem, no gps signal, gps never locked!! I had to send it to samsung because it was a hardware issue and not a software issue. They did replace a part and since I got it back no problem.

If you have old nandroid backups, keep restoring different ones till the GPS works again. Then try to upgrade your ROM again. If you don't have backups then you have to restore back to stock with ODIN and upgrade from there.
It is unknown why this "feature" is triggered at this time just speculation. I've been calling the the "AT&T GPS Death" issue
Check your flash counter, reset to zero with Triangle away if need be, flash stock lg1, let the phone auto update to lh9, call att (or visit your local store), get warranty replacement

If you flash a lot of ROM's the odds are it's going to eventually happen to you again. I would personally save the warranty replacement for something else. If you keep going back for replacements they are eventually going to deny you...IMO.

so, what would you do if it were your phone?
I'm having this issue too. Not so much as a single satellite showing up in GPS Test, much less a lock.
It's always something...

If your going to play with your phone...you got to fix it when it breaks...
This code HARD factory reset my phone and it brought back up the pgs flashing icon. But no lock. Code: *2767*3855#
It's progress but I still can't get it to lock on. Plus I have no backups that work. somehow all corrupted and not working.
I dont want to send it in because it's been rooted.
factory reset in settings. Phone gps locks to a different province. damnnnnnn it
Try "GPS Status" maybe? I'm just guessing at this point

Well it shows im in a different province aswell. I've never been this stumped before. I usually have a lead to go on but GPS is just so complex.
I am where the star is.
Did you try to clear your AGPS data and reload it?
I finally got it working again.
Flashed the stock firmware tar through Odin, let it boot up and fill in your info as normal. Once you're booted to the homescreen, do a factory reset from settings, not recovery. Once I rebooted and signed back in, GPS was working correctly again. Just locked on to 18 sats after not being able to even see one for the last couple days.
Did that wipe your internal sd?

It shouldn't. even doing the HARD factory reset (which I found out only works on ICS based sammy roms) doesnt touch your ubs storage (16 n 32gb internal)

Edit- it doesn't actually have SDS yet, but it has an "insane chip" that may cause more problems in the future. It crashes about 7/8 times a day, and that's under current light use.
It's locked to a carrier called O2 (UK). Explains in the link above, and my FwRev is 0xf1.
I'm running a Odexed Pre-Rooted 4.1.2 stock touchwiz firmware.
I need to basically reset the triangle counter to 0, so I can send it back, along with making sure I use my existing carrier - o2's firmware. Which I have downloaded the correct version of.
So, please can somebody explain the details of how I should go about this? As I just really need to make sure the counter is 0 and I get a replacement so my phone doesn't have the SDS.
Really irritated by it, and I don't look forward to switching back to a cruddy iPhone 4 until they send it back.
How would I get in contact with Samsung, and what should I exactly say to them? I'm sure my carrier wouldn't help with this issue and will tell me to go directly to Samsung themselves.
Thanks in advance for any help!
If you have SDS you can't do anything other than to change motherboard. btw what exactly happened to your device?
Just having chip version FwRev 0xf1. isn't SDS.
SDS is condition where your device doesn't boot at all due to hardware failure.
I need to send it back though. And they won't fix / replace it UNLESS the flash count is 0.
Now I also want to ensure the carrier firmware is installed too before I send it off.
It just keeps on crashing and freezing, I ran the eMMC check, and it does state I have an "insane chip", which helped to point a finger at the problems I've been having.
And I don't want to experience problems in the future if I choose to keep it for another year. This dummy data file generator app fixes things for now, but I think it'll only be short term.
I don't think they will consider directly for motherboard replacement for freezing.
Anyway you should earliest switch over to stock ROM with 0 flash counter.
-Get stock recovery and kernel and flash it
-Use triangle away to reset counter
-Flash stock ROM from your carrier & country
-Wipe cache and data
After this may be your issue may get solved if it is something other than hardware issue. otherwise it will be ready to claim warranty.

It worked fine the way you suggested, and the company I got my phone with swapped it with a new one this morning. It's much better now, rooted again, and just restoring all my apps. Glad I didn't have to send it to samsung!
okay so I have a samsung galaxy s3, I updated to Android 4.3 through AT&T and my phone has been giving me problems ever since. could someone please tell me what options do I have to fix this thing? Right now I have downloads that keep coming in that have been completed months ago and my LED flash also comes on when my phone rings. I havent done any flashing or rooting since about 2 years ago with my AT&T Tilt 2. I just felt like this phone didnt need it. I've read some other articles that say if you try to root an AT&T SGS3 that it will brick after this cripling update to android 4.3. But it's just fine to do it wit other carrier smartphones. It doesnt seem like there are any fixes on the horizon, so I feel like i need to take matters into my own hands. Please help.
I'm assuming you already tried a factory reset? But as far as rooting though I don't think it's possible currently if you did the ota update. Whatever you do don't try to Odin back though, you'll hard brick.

I'm not sure if i've tried a factory reset. The only reset i've done is the option they give you when you hold the button on the upper right hand side of the phone. Where is the factory resetet option? Also, should I backup my information before I do this factory reset.

boot into recovery to clear the cache first and then try a factory reset if that does not work.
I have read of this continual download bug, but do not have it myself
If you can connect to KIES, you can back stuff up easily , but I'd just backup contacts and stuff and reinstall the apps. Yes, a factory reset will wipe your apps and contacts, but it should leave your pics in the card and in the phone alone.. back em up just in case.
Its been a while since ive been on XDA so dont kill me lol.
I have a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 SM-T800 that i rooted back in december. Well i have had horrible battery issues all along and now its cutting off without notice. I have tried to take the batter out and what not but nothing is working.
SOOOOO...I am going to send it back to Sammy to have them fix it. My question is what is the best method to unroot this thing? i currently and rooted stock lollipop with TWRP recovery. Im guessing i need to be unrooted and back to stock recovery before i send it. Any suggestions?

Flash official cf-autroot then open the supersu app and select Full unroot from settings. Done.
1. Back up any data from internal storage
2. Device settings > security > re-activation lock > disabled
3. Boot into TWRP recovery and format :
a) system
b) data
c) cache
d) dalvik-cache (advanced)
e) factory-reset for good measure
4. Re-boot directly into DOWNLOAD MODE from recovery menu
5. Flash official firmware package with Odin
All partitions will be clean and fully stock. Knox warranty void 0x1
Will Samsung still take it back after you trip Knox? Curious as to how this turns out for you as I am having the exact same issues with mine lately. Let us know what happens.
I have a tmo s4 (m919) that had been previously rooted (by someone else). Root check says it's not "rooted" but it still says Custom in status. It's running 4.4.2 and won't update because of this. When I try to wipe the cache it gives me an error. The binary counter may have not been reset when the previous owners "factory reset" it. I only know all this garbage because i did a little research and learned a little lesson in what to look for next time. ..ugh. Sooooo....I'm looking to return it to stock/warrantable condition and be able to update. I have never messed with any rooting before but am willing to learn. The reason for the post is that the method for fixing this may be different than the general guides. Thank you for your time, it is most appreciated!

Triangle away by chainfire
Can i use triangle even if the unit has been reset already to "stock" and not running whatever it was running?
Have you tried to factory reset? Warranty is gone already you can't fix it. What I would do is download the latest firmware, flash it with Odin or update with samsung smart switch, then factory reset. After that it should be back to official status

We did a factory reset when we got it. My understanding is that Triangle Away solves the modification counter, but needs to be done before unrooting it. I had no knowledge of this issue at the time so I am wondering if it would need to be rerooted to use the TA before using Odin to reflash it to stock.

I've never had to use triangle away. Probably the user before you modified something and didn't change it back, that's why it still shows modified. Reason why I suggested to flash stock firmware then factory reset. But yeah if you want you have to use triangle away when you have root access

I agree with @serio22, Odin stock, then reset. Triangle was just a bit quicker way then DL firmwares, losing data/apps etc.
OK, what I'm understanding is:
- Warrantable condition is lost even with the modification counter being reset. Obvious reason I'm guessing, but why?
- Downloading current firmware, installing with Odin/Smart Switch, and then factory resetting will reset the mod counter without using Triangle. I don't care about app loss since the user (my teen boy's first phone) hasn't used it yet or even knows of its existence (better be good, ya never know what Santa's got up his sleeve that you'll never see otherwise) so nothing to lose.
Sound about right?

Yes. Just Odin stock and reset. Check your Knox status in your bootloader just to be sure its been voided or not. Power off and then hold power and vol down buttons to get into bootloader. Look for Knox 0x0 or if void, 0x1.
