I looked into the user manual that was uploaded by user "redmongoose":

And see what I found (see attached image).
I think this will be enabled on HTC retail version, but not on T-Mobile version.
Probably ...
PS: To get the manual: Connect you phone to a PC, Mount the SD Card and there you will find the manual

That would make sense as Vodafone in the Netherlands are getting them 14-15th of April.
I think the screenshot in the manual is showing an early version of the desire ROM, but was later removed. The manual doesn't seem to describe it anywhere as a feature.
There's a page on slashgear (search for Desire vs Nexus, I'm a new user so can't provide link) where somebody has left a comment suggesting that voice to text is currently exclusive to the Nexus, hence I think it was there in the desire rom but had to be disabled.

Welcome aboard!
There is a thread about this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650076 which includes a link to the video you refer to.
I cannot think any single reason why such feature is removed when it was there before.
As I understood, the voice to text is a standard feature of Android 2.1, and not HTC.
How about the past HTC android 2.1 devices such as HTC Legend?
Is it not compatible with the HTC sense UI?
Someone should try this custom HTC keyboard, it has voice-to-text and other enhancements:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
Btw, probably we need to email HTC and/or T-Mobile to have clarification about this once and for all.

I won't be surprised if this feature was disabled in HTC Desire and Legend. One reason comes to my mind is the lack of the extra mic for noise cancellation, as it must help in voice-to-text working properly in certain conditions.
Nevertheless, even if that was the case, I'm sure as soon as Desire roms start cooking, this will be the first thing we'll see.
But I am wondering how clicking on that "voice-to-text/settings" button would work? is it going to be a 2-clicks process to activate? that kind of sux!

Glad to be here! I'll be even gladder when Clove deliver my Sim free handset...
The vid in the link relates to a Nexus phone, so this muddies things a little. However, I've seen other vids from the MWC showing that the keyboard on the Desire did indeed at one point have the mic icon on it.
Some people are speculating that retail/sim only units with have the feature enabled, but I don't think that will happen. As said above, I think it was simply that even though V2T is a standard feature of Android 2.1, it probably wasn't very effective without the noise cancellation hardware.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see just how well the Desire can do this - I've seen some videos of the V2T in action on the Nexus and its quite impressive.
There are pics of an Australian delivered model (Telstra branded) here:
http://news.smarthouse.com.au/images/shared/2010032804133605702.jpg
You can see from the pic that the V2T button is definitely there.

Just tried Better Keyboard. When i press the speech button i get:

I'll be a little annoyed if the sim free version has it.

ouch, .. i hope this have nothing to do with the fact that the desire doesnt have that stupid "noise cancellation".
and on the contrary, i would be delighted if the sim free version has it xP
If the retail unlocked version does not have it, then I will be very annoyed because they advertised it:

Thats bad... Perhaps its just because of the T-Mobile Rom. But even this wouldnt make any sense.

Check this out.
That one is not T-Mobile version, I guess ...
The problem here is with the T-Mobile version, which does not include the voice to text "engine".
Or probably it (the engine) is disabled ... accidentally before shipping the device.

That's why im posting it. They probably left it out on the t-mobile version..
i email HTC to ask if the voice to text feature was disabled on the Sim Free version of the Desire and this is the response i got....
Thank you for your enquiry about voice to text.
Well the device does have voice to search via Google, so it should do. The only thing is you'll probably have to install some apps from market on the Device, hope this helps..

So any one with the desire ATM does the above work? (i.e voice to search) i find the answer vague so i have asked for a yes or no answer to the question i asked. i quoted the desirehtc website where it states this feature will be available.
if anyone else has emailed HTC on this subject i would be interested in the response you got.
UPDATE
HTC have now resopnded with a Simple "NO" you will have to use a 3d party App.
no voice search here.
cos it's using the HTC IME, it is missing the microphone key that you get on the Android keyboard to use the voice to text functions.
whoever answered that at HTC obviously didn't have one to hand to check and was probably looking at the nexus....
Afternoon all,
After enabling the 'Voice to Text' as shown on How To Enable Voice To Text using one of the links on page 2 I have now got Google search by voice working on a T-Mobile Desire.
You don't have to change over to using the android keyboard if you don't want to use the main voice to text functionality, but now pressing and holding the search button brings up a pop-up on screen with 'Speak Now - Google Search' and a microphone symbol.
Seems to work fine to me.
works fine for me too.
Maybe it's coming in another update, this is from the htc website desirehtc dot com
" Android 2.1...
What's that all about then?
Launched in January 2010, and known in the trade as Eclair, this is basically an update to the operating system. In laymans terms, it's a sexier looking interface. But it's not quite that simple.
Now, for example, your Wallpapers can be animated, injecting your screen with a new lease of life. This works particularly well with the AMOLED screen.
Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there. "
I'm sorry but voice search has always been there...

Cheers mate... great help, 1 more reason 2 love Desire...
Back to my orignal post.....
HTC tell me the voice - search is available by default (i.e not installing any other SW) they say it has to be enabled in settings then it work when using the search key/menu?
any one confirm this?
Actually, I also got a similar answer from HTC. I'm from Singapore though. Thus, most likely it is an unlocked version. My question was:
"Does the HTC Desire support the speech-to-text function out of the box? Does it also support AVI files? Thank You."
This is what i got.
"Thanks for contacting HTC.
For HTC Desire, it does have the function for Speech-to-text, but it doesn't support AVI file.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again."
From this reply, it seems obvious what the answer is. But the truth, from those who already got the phone, are far from it. I had specifically said out of the box. But, as told by owners, you need to download apps and everything for this function. Just FYI, I do not own the Desire...yet XD
HTC says NO! to voice enabled in default.
Hi
Does the galaxy havesmart dialing?
It is one of the things i loved about my Sensation. i could start typing a few letters (numbers) and all the coressponding contacts were shown.
from what i can see from all the videos this may not be possible in stock android 4.0?
Can anyone relay my fears
Cant remeber the last i didnt have that feature even going back to my nokia e71.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
the X10i Sony doesn't have it and i'm worried the nexus doesn't
i use it a lot when using the htc dialer
No idea how to load my google contacts into emulator... if there's an easy way to do that I can try for you.
i have tried it in the emulator.
it will not work under the dialer itself.
however it will work under the search bar.
when you start to type the number under the search, it will appear all the related contacts.
You can always use a 3rd party app such as Dialer One or TouchPal Dialer (free on the market) which has the feature you desire.
Mark.

Android SDK
Takes about 10-15 mins to get up and running purely dependent on connection of course. But emulator takes few mins to boot and is really sluggish. Still no clue how anyone develops on that.
I made myself as a contact..dialer did not show what you asked. But unless I get full contact list in there cant say for sure. But the layout itself doesnt seem appropriate for it.
This is one of my concerns aswell, I love the smart dial feature on the HTC dialer and heavily rely on it. I don't want to have to get an alternate dialer I want a nice clean pure android experience.
It's crazy to me that people still look up names by numbers instead of names.

you can use the search bar to search for numbers. it will appear with the contact that match the numbers.
just like it has already happening in honeycomb table. just that no ones use honeycomb to make phone calls.
It's a change it might not.
I no longer have it on my device after switching over to CM7

Smart Dialling appears so backwards to me. I have internalized only a few phone numbers and that's because it'S always easier and faster to just use the contacts feature instead of "dialling".

It only works from the start of a phone number though.
So if you know the number ends in 5423, if you try searching for that it won't match it.
HTC's dialer will match anywhere in the number.
Balls, much faster to start typing a name on the keypad and results are refined as you go. Every phone for the last 15 years had t9 dialling. So stupid Apple dropped it and Google following along.

Dual sim is important feature for me also.
It's quad band on both radios, so it will work fine in Italy.
It costs around $915. Not a good price.

is there any section here dedicated about this phone, for custom rom and other mods?
I think that with the dual sim feature I can't flash the custom rom with omega and more, right?

No, you can't flash existing custom roms. Whether there will be dev support for this phone is what I can't tell. since its only to be sold in the chinese market, I doubt if it will receive as much community support as the international counterpart
Android question for China GNII
I'm also in the market to buy a dual SIM phone and am quite keen to buy the N7102. I heard however China Android phones have limitations to access Google services like Gmail, Google maps etc. I also heard there is no way to access the Google Play store to download apps. Can anyone verify this? I don't live in China so these limitations will keep me from buying this model. Thanks everyone.
Mochiware, your gonna use the phone outside China? No problem downloading those apps & using western internet access.
Yes, i want this phone also, I'm happy to have dual sim & DC HSPA+ & forget LTE for now
$890 is alot of money & its going to be cheaper than that for me to buy it, 3rd December release date onwards should see it reduce a bit hopefully.

Pat, can you provide more details about access Google Play, signing into Google accounts etc? I heard from a friend living in China that there are restrictions that prevent Google access. Do you mean outside of China these restrictions don't apply over wifi and/or 3G? I can live without LTE so long as I can use dual-SIM so both my work and personal numbers can be on the same device. I carry 2 mobiles now and that can be annoying sometimes. Thanks in advance.
I've been using dual sim adaptors for many years & can't imagine only having one sim but i would like to have calls & SMS coming in from both numbers as well.
Yes your Sims wont be Chinese will they so your network will give you the same access you get on any other 2g/3g phone you currently use.
If you think about it, the Chinese restrictions are going to be applied through the network/carrier otherwise nothing would stop them buying non Chinese handsets to avoid the blocks, it would be to easy.
Any apps missing on the software you can download. "Play store" is a downloadable app ...

It won't have the standard google apps out of box. The software is a modified version of android with pretty much all google service removed. There s no way using gmail google play maps or YouTube apps without root.
I can't verify this but I don't think it comes with German language UI either.

Just received my Korean LG G4, everything worked well except one issue and I have to fix.
Making a call is annoying for example when I need to place a call I have to remove the international code for example +97150******* will give me invalid number so I have to edit each number in my contact list by removing +971 and just start with 05********
One more thing my G4 always act like I'm in korea, weather app and the widget on the look screen there are 2 o'clock my country (UAE) and Korea.
Any solution for these problems?

BTW, where did you buy the phone from? Crazydeals? How much?
1. For the international code problem something looks wrong, what happens when u need to call abroad?
Are your numbers synced with Google contacts?
Try the suggested fix in the reply by skr
2. Did you try changing the settings to obtain clock data from network? Or set by u to fix the time issue?
If it's the weather app Switch GPS on and let it aquire ur location, that should fix weather and clock.

It says this phone is unlocked but for some reason it's stuck with korea like the weather app and widget clock. GPS is turned on and more over i did a full reset twice while my sim inside incase this will solve it but it still.

It says
