i email HTC to ask if the voice to text feature was disabled on the Sim Free version of the Desire and this is the response i got....
Thank you for your enquiry about voice to text.
Well the device does have voice to search via Google, so it should do. The only thing is you'll probably have to install some apps from market on the Device, hope this helps..

So any one with the desire ATM does the above work? (i.e voice to search) i find the answer vague so i have asked for a yes or no answer to the question i asked. i quoted the desirehtc website where it states this feature will be available.
if anyone else has emailed HTC on this subject i would be interested in the response you got.
UPDATE
HTC have now resopnded with a Simple "NO" you will have to use a 3d party App.
no voice search here.
cos it's using the HTC IME, it is missing the microphone key that you get on the Android keyboard to use the voice to text functions.
whoever answered that at HTC obviously didn't have one to hand to check and was probably looking at the nexus....
Afternoon all,
After enabling the 'Voice to Text' as shown on How To Enable Voice To Text using one of the links on page 2 I have now got Google search by voice working on a T-Mobile Desire.
You don't have to change over to using the android keyboard if you don't want to use the main voice to text functionality, but now pressing and holding the search button brings up a pop-up on screen with 'Speak Now - Google Search' and a microphone symbol.
Seems to work fine to me.
works fine for me too.
Maybe it's coming in another update, this is from the htc website desirehtc dot com
" Android 2.1...
What's that all about then?
Launched in January 2010, and known in the trade as Eclair, this is basically an update to the operating system. In laymans terms, it's a sexier looking interface. But it's not quite that simple.
Now, for example, your Wallpapers can be animated, injecting your screen with a new lease of life. This works particularly well with the AMOLED screen.
Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there. "
I'm sorry but voice search has always been there...

Cheers mate... great help, 1 more reason 2 love Desire...
Back to my orignal post.....
HTC tell me the voice - search is available by default (i.e not installing any other SW) they say it has to be enabled in settings then it work when using the search key/menu?
any one confirm this?
Actually, I also got a similar answer from HTC. I'm from Singapore though. Thus, most likely it is an unlocked version. My question was:
"Does the HTC Desire support the speech-to-text function out of the box? Does it also support AVI files? Thank You."
This is what i got.
"Thanks for contacting HTC.
For HTC Desire, it does have the function for Speech-to-text, but it doesn't support AVI file.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again."
From this reply, it seems obvious what the answer is. But the truth, from those who already got the phone, are far from it. I had specifically said out of the box. But, as told by owners, you need to download apps and everything for this function. Just FYI, I do not own the Desire...yet XD
HTC says NO! to voice enabled in default.

That would make sense as Vodafone in the Netherlands are getting them 14-15th of April.
I think the screenshot in the manual is showing an early version of the desire ROM, but was later removed. The manual doesn't seem to describe it anywhere as a feature.
There's a page on slashgear (search for Desire vs Nexus, I'm a new user so can't provide link) where somebody has left a comment suggesting that voice to text is currently exclusive to the Nexus, hence I think it was there in the desire rom but had to be disabled.

There is a thread about this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650076 which includes a link to the video you refer to.
I cannot think any single reason why such feature is removed when it was there before.
As I understood, the voice to text is a standard feature of Android 2.1, and not HTC.
How about the past HTC android 2.1 devices such as HTC Legend?
Is it not compatible with the HTC sense UI?
Someone should try this custom HTC keyboard, it has voice-to-text and other enhancements:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
Btw, probably we need to email HTC and/or T-Mobile to have clarification about this once and for all.

I won't be surprised if this feature was disabled in HTC Desire and Legend. One reason comes to my mind is the lack of the extra mic for noise cancellation, as it must help in voice-to-text working properly in certain conditions.
Nevertheless, even if that was the case, I'm sure as soon as Desire roms start cooking, this will be the first thing we'll see.
But I am wondering how clicking on that "voice-to-text/settings" button would work? is it going to be a 2-clicks process to activate? that kind of sux!

Glad to be here! I'll be even gladder when Clove deliver my Sim free handset...
The vid in the link relates to a Nexus phone, so this muddies things a little. However, I've seen other vids from the MWC showing that the keyboard on the Desire did indeed at one point have the mic icon on it.
Some people are speculating that retail/sim only units with have the feature enabled, but I don't think that will happen. As said above, I think it was simply that even though V2T is a standard feature of Android 2.1, it probably wasn't very effective without the noise cancellation hardware.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see just how well the Desire can do this - I've seen some videos of the V2T in action on the Nexus and its quite impressive.
There are pics of an Australian delivered model (Telstra branded) here:
http://news.smarthouse.com.au/images/shared/2010032804133605702.jpg
You can see from the pic that the V2T button is definitely there.

ouch, .. i hope this have nothing to do with the fact that the desire doesnt have that stupid "noise cancellation".
and on the contrary, i would be delighted if the sim free version has it xP

Thats bad... Perhaps its just because of the T-Mobile Rom. But even this wouldnt make any sense.

That one is not T-Mobile version, I guess ...
The problem here is with the T-Mobile version, which does not include the voice to text "engine".
Or probably it (the engine) is disabled ... accidentally before shipping the device.

The only problem is it doesn't say how to do it, one post says read the other thread but without a link. Can some kind sole point me in the right direction as my searches don't find it.
Thanks

The thing is that even if you get a keyboard with the speech-to-text button, it won't work, because you lack the engine. However, it has been speculated that only the T-mobile version lacks this function, and that the SIM free versions will have it.
The stuff I read showed a video of it working and the handset order is a unlocked version. Will wait and see I am sure it will be one of the things most users want to do.
Thanks for your reply

What engine are you talking about? Everything is done on Google servers rather than on the phone. It worked on my G1, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on Desire.
Karolis how did you get it to work, is there a tut or instructions

I used this on G1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 but I can't install it on Desire because HTC_IME is in ROM and we have no root.
By the way, here's N1 LatinIME.apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5830176 -- I'll have to try adb method when I'm at home.
I think using that method we should be able to install either IME.
Will report back later...

I don't have the phone yet personally, but a few people on here have reported that when they try to use the v2t function, they get error messages like "Missing engine" and "Your device does not support this function" (or something like that, I can't remember exactly what they were, but you should find them in the other threads on this subject)
I installed the following app labelled "Verizon 2.1 Keyboard With Voice Input" online. Having installed it I now have voice to text on the desire! It works best just with the android keyboard but it also works with better keyboard. I have not tried elsewhere yet.

what happens when you switch the sense off? isnt the sense keyboard removed?
Sense UI and HTC_IME.apk work independently.
I have triend instaling modded HTC_IME as well as N1 keyboard via adb, but it's a no-go for a non-rooted phone
You will be disappointed when you get it i had it on my old phone the Milestone before i sold it and its not that good, doesn't get all the words right and its slow.

One solution could be to manually relaunch your partner, but that is probably a more cumbersome and less satisfying method.
Hello there, I've got a question about Google's new Android 4.1.
I am running Jelly Bean on my Galaxy Nexus GSM version without having any problems. But now I wanted to try out so called "Google Now" and ask a few questions like "What is the definition of Robot?"
In Google's demo at I/O 2012 Google Now gave an answer like Apple's Siri, spoke to the user and showed him a card with the definition of Robot.
Now my problem is, that when I ask something, google now just gives me the google search results and doesn't speak to me or give me a card.
Is anyone having the same problems?
Yeah, I'm noticing the same behavior. Sometimes it does work ("how high is the burj khalifa?"), but most of the time it just searches for it. It does work best in English, though. I switched it to German (native language) and I'm having a hard time making it do anything but search on Google.
But oh well, it's not a stable release, so you can't really expect anything. I hope they will be able to iron out most issues before JB goes public.

My native language is German, too. I also tried both, English and German, none of them worked. But well You're right it's not a final release, I am happy with it but I am looking forward to see some Siri-like application on my Nexus. I thought I've missed something in the settings but I guess I am gonna wait for the final release...
Thanks for the reply, greetings from Frankfurt ;-)
I guess I'm glad I'M not the only one with this issue. Cdma Nexus.Let's hope it works better with future development.

I'm having the same exact problem. Mine worked very well for the first few days I was using it, now however it won't talk back to me after I ask it a question. What's also odd is that half way through checking the settings the option for "Hotword Detection" vanished (found in "Google Now -> Settings -> Voice" ). I had to do a battery pull to get it to come back.
I have checked all the other language settings as the other forum post had suggested but still nothing. I'm thinking it must have been some kind of silent update or a problem on the back end because none of my other settings have changed.

I had to do a battery pull to get it to come back.
I have checked all the other language settings as the other forum post had suggested but still nothing. I'm thinking it must have been some kind of silent update or a problem on the back end because none of my other settings have changed.

I changed my language settings from German to English, everything is working perfectly for me now... Except that google now thinks that I am in Washington instead of in Germany but I guess I can figure out how thinks work.

Same for me, the talk back results worked great until today. I just saw that Google Now got ported to ICS, maybe with a ton more people using the service something got messed up on Google's end? Weird.
