Hello there! I came here hoping to find some good answers. This account may be new, but I am definitely familiar with this site and what it can offer. So hello and thanks in advance
So recently I purchased the Nexus 7 2013, rooted it, and all the good stuff. I have the older Nexus 7 as well, and still a wonderful device. The issue I am having with this new Nexus 7 is the OTG support is quite strange. With the older Nexus 7, I would plug in my OTG cable, attach my device(s) and it would work on the fly every time. This new nexus 7 is a different story..
While I can get OTG to work, this is what I have to do. If I attach the OTG cable with a device while it is on, nothing happens. I have used the OTG Troubleshooter app correctly, and I get this message..
Warning: Expected 0, but found 1 hubs. Did you disconnect your OTG?

Yet if I attach the OTG Cable and my device while the Nexus 7 is turned off, then turn it on, everything works as it should, StickMount detects and mounts the drive properly and all is dandy, but if I remove the OTG and attach again, I would have to reboot in order to use it. I also cannot access OTG devices in recovery, only when I fully boot the Android OS.
Any help on this would be appreciated. If you are wondering, I am using the ElementalX Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389022) 1.8 on Android 4.3 (even had the same issues when using 4.4, but worse), but even before I installed this Kernel, I had the exact same issue. I have a feeling I just have a wonky device unlike others, but I'd like to see if I can get some answers here anyway. Thank you for your time.

Perfectly is a big word.
There are dozens of users in other threads complaining that OTG doesn't work.
I tryed my logitech mouse and my pen drive and it does not work and I'm using the genuine Samsung cable.
I need to try this tonite to decide who's mad
But I heard 4.0.3 has otg support including USB stick using stick mount

Read somewhere the pen drive must be a 'green' drive (as in power saving). Can't for the life of me find where I read it, though
Has to be the most useless add-on IMO

I have dozens of pen drive no one works.
I'm thinking that people who says that USB Host works well on 4.0.2 are using modded kernel.
Read somewhere that Stickmount (on the Market) was required to make usb storage work.
My USB OTG cable and MicroSD card reader have yet to come in so I have yet to confirm thus myself.

4.0.3 + StickMount + cheapy cable + any old USB stick or uSD card reader I can find == WIN on my GN.
Can't comment on 4.0.2.

Yes, USB OTG works on 4.0.2 (ICL53F), try a USB mouse or keyboard. But there is a problem with external (pen) drives as the phone won't mount them. So although USB OTG "works" you can't use it with pen drives.
Your phone needs to be rooted and if it is, get "StickMount" from chainfire from the market. That will solve that problem.
Do you have to have a new ROM or can you just run Stickmount on the stock but rooted phone?

Powered off the phone, connected the Logitech Unifying receiver, booted the phone.
Works both mouse and keyboard at the same time.
Now we need to wait for pen drive support.
you need stickmount and you need to have root, then pendrives should work
as an aside, i'm completely stock 4.0.2 on gsm, and my ps3 controller totally works in shadowgun now!

Is it my cable?
I updated to 4.0.2 and I have a USB Host cable (http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/24267949/-/Product.html). I tried plugging in a mouse to test, but nothing happens.
What am I suppose to see? a pointer?
Also tried 2 thumb drives with stickmount, but nothing detected.
Trying to work out if it's the cable or the things I'm testing are not compatible.
Thanks

Hi I am new to this forum and i just purchased and unlocked my Optimus G. Now I'm looking into a OTG cable that may work on this phone as the sprint version, as you all know, does not support Micro SD cards for extra data storage. Now i know they have wireless HDD's that you can carry to store information and Bluetooth keyboards and mice that you can connect to the phone out of the box. But i had External HDD drives that are not wireless and a Wireless keyboard/mouse USB combo all that i would like to run on the phone at a cheap rate. I have read some places that OTG is possibly not capable on this phone. Can anyone verify that this is not possible. Again i am very tech savy and my phone is rooted and unlocked, so if all i need to do is change a kernel or install some files i can definately figure out how to do that. Can anyone clarify this for me and if it is possible put links to cables and tuts on how to do this? i couldn't necessarily find it when i was looking on XDA earlier, and its the only site i really trust for information about my phone.
"USB host", or what is commonly referred to as OTG, is not supported on this device. I'm not sure of the usb controller so I cannot say as to whether or not this is a hardware or software limitation. Either way, I consider this a serious shortcoming, especially on a flagship device.
I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Well if that is the case, can anyone verify if this is not possible because of the software or hardware. If it is because of the software is anyone trying to develop anything for this right now? Thanks again for the verification^

the nexus 4 "doesnt support otg" yet people have modified a kernel to add the feature in. the device does NOT support 5v so you will need to power the hard drive or w/e with external power using a y-cable.
if we have the same usb controller as the nexus 4 then i would assume we'd have to do the exact same thing... custom kernel + y cable for external power. so try and get some kernel devs together and work on on getting that project started for the LS970 device if you really wanna see it happen.

I built in USB host and USB otg support and a art user reported it wasn't working. However I can through up a 3.4 kernel if someone has the cable and power to test it.

That's up to your kernel devs. I outlined everything required for the N4 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38906771&postcount=2
That said, I once took a look at the kernel files for the Optimus G and it looks like the code for otg/host mode is far more complete than that of the N4. I'm curious if it's able to read the ID pin in its current state..

This is what they had to say on the other forum so far. I don't know any dev's, but if any of you are reading this it sounds like there is a lot of Source Code developed for this already on the Nexus 4. If anyone reading this knows someone capable of doing this if you could forward it to them, because I'm sure I'm not the only person who would like OTG or "USB Host" be available for this phone.
I guess nobody has tried to work this yet? I still haven't seen any kind of development.

Any news so far? In april, it seemed there wan't any modiefied kerned which allowed, as well as in nexus 4, to get the USB host function through an external powered usb hub, is there any now?
usb otg support on LG optimus g 970
I am running an Optimus G 970 and I was attempting to gain support of an external USB DAC called "HiFimediy Sabre".
My first project is to attempt to gain some usb otg functionality.
I created a cable to test since the native 5vdc power out function is not there.
I used my computer to power the cable with 5vdc which was verified by the phone "slow charging".
I ran the "usb host diagnostics". This is a diagnostic tool and it looks at the functionality of the usb port.
Note the following.
1. Phone is rooted.
2. Phone is running all stock software and firmware.
I was asked to reboot to apply a firmware fix by the app after allowing it rooted access.
The app was run one more time following the instructions on the screen and plugging in my pny 16gb usb drive.
It was not able to connect.
I received the following unique code: 188704.
I will follow up when I know more.

Did this ever go anywhere???
Just curious.
Hi guys.
I'm needing to connect my Gnex to the internet, on a wired-only network. Cellular data is not an option. Wifi is not an option. Bluetooth is not an option.
I've tried dabbling with reverse USB tethering - and it was working for a while - but now, for some reason, it's just not working reliably for me.
So I'm wondering if there's a working micro USB -> Ethernet adapter solution out there?
Do I need some OTG adapter and then an adapter like this connecting to it? Thanks if anyone knows what definitely works (hopefully from your own experience or knowledge of solid accounts of it!) - just don't want to waste money buying something that actually might not work.
My rooted gnex has CM11 stable 4.4.2 on it, if that helps.
Thanks
I bit the bullet and I can confirm, that it is working just fine, absolutely just fine!!! I'm so happy!!!
Even with Google Play Store, app updating is no problem! (it might be because I have the 'hack connectivity' app installed but I'm not sure...I don't think so...I think that only runs when doing reverse USB tethering, which I'm obviously not doing now...)
So, some information to report so it helps anyone else ever embarking on the same quest as me:
- If you're on stock Jelly Bean or above, drivers for some or most common Ethernet->USB adapters (such as the famous AX88772 chip), are ready to go, built-in. It will simply work right away, Internet working, plug and play Internet.
- But luckily, it works also with CM11 February 2014 build and up (and maybe much easier too, but my current build is a February installer build)! Hooray for that, no custom kernel hacking/driver installing needed!!
- Certainly one Ethernet adapter that now has multiple documented reports of success (at least with the gnex), is the Apple Ethernet->USB ('for Macbook Air') adapter. There's a youtube video here and a twitter post here. They're both with stock JB on the gnex, but mine is with CM 11 4.2.2. And yes, I decided to err on the side of superstition and got the same apple adapter, even if it was more than double the price of other perfectly great AX88772 adapters out there...hey, at least it works! And then as for OTG adapter, I just got a random $2 generic black one from ebay. Seems to be working fine, speed seems pretty ok, certainly faster than my WiFi used to be!
- Another bit of into: I read somewhere, that 'Make sure you plug everything into the adapter/OTG cable BEFORE plugging it into your [Android device]. While using a mouse/keyboard/hub I noticed if you plug the OTG cable in first and then a peripheral, the N7 won't recognize it.' But I can report, with the Apple Ethernet adapter, plugging it in after plugging the OTG cable in, works just fine . I just wait about 10-15 seconds to make sure it gets DHCP and away we go .
Hope this helps someone out there, thanks for listening!

It's not mine, just a suggestion. I believe you will need to root your tablet for this to work. And, there are plenty of threads here for rooting. The Nexus Root Toolkit is my choice. Search the forums and\or wugfresh. It's free and works perfectly.
I have that problem found, i needed ro connect my device to a pc.

Hello to all. I am emperiencing a number of problems on my deb. Some are listed below. These problems were not experienced in the first 3 months:
1) THE BATTERY
I cannot use the tablet while charging. It does not charge i.e. It needs to be in a specific position to charge.
Also, I am experiencing Huge Battery Drain. It charges 5-15% in 2:30 hours. This happened after I used the PA 4.5 beta 1(Using MultiROM. This stayed even after I deleted the ROM And reverted back to stock.
2) THE SIM CARD
I don't know when it happened but the sim was working fine before. I didn't use the sim very often except for validating whatsapp. But as I tried to validate, no messages arrived at my nexus. I thought that the sim had become defective. But it worked just fine in other phones!
I even contacted Asus about this but they asked me to first factory reset it. I decided it was too big a deal and did not.
3)THE OTG CABLE
My Nexus recognized the otg usb drive at first. When I tried to use it again, It just wouldn't recognize it. Tried using a mouse too (had worked before). Did not work. Tried on different roms. Nope.
4) USB COMPUTER CONNECTIONS
I had used it before to copy files from my laptop to my nexus. It worked fine. After some time, I tried to do it again, the pc would recognize it sometimes say it was unknown sometimes say it was Nexus 7 but wouldn't install drivers. Tried using Wug's to no avail.
Today, I tried using it on my other pc. The drivers installed just fine, but there was no sign of it in My Computers. In Wug's, the device was able to operate fully! It tried using various backup commands, and they worked! But the push/pull command did not work. Though that turned out to be a problem of the toolkit as I pulled the files I need with ADB PULL command in cmd.
So, as some of these problems are hardware related, I am thinking of giving it back to Asus. I am rooted and performing The Wug's Flash Stock +Unroot Option Now. Please if you have any advice, post it here.
THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Judging from the symptoms, you likely have a bad usb port. I wouldn't say the cable since your otg cable yielded the same result. According to some, it's really fragile when you handle it rough. The port is soldered to the I/O board so either you (1) try to bend back the inside pins; or (2) replace it if you're skillful enough with your iron; or (3) replace the board (ouch!). It's a shame if you have to choose (3) since that means throwing the board away for just one bad component. Litter.
1) The inside pin is fine. The cable just seems really loose. Though the other cables have the same effect.
2)I dont have the skill.
3)Why should I waste any money if It is under warranty?
And usb otg should come at least once, as the tab does charge once maintained in a specific condition.
And As the tablet charges when its connected to a pc, its not a problem of bad usb port

I didn't realize your tab was still under warranty. Nevertheless, the fact that the cables fit loosely suggest that the housing is not in good condition and the pins, in turn, while not damaged, make poor connection (to wit, the tab charged only if held in a certain position). If the tab consistently charges while connected to a PC, then you're right, the fault lies elsewhere, like a jarred battery connector, or the other USB end, or the charger itself. This, however, leaves the OTG issue unexplained. Warranty seems your best bet for the moment, however. Good luck.
I don't think it can be a mistake of mine, so Asus will definitely have to replace it.
Thanks for your support though!
