Hi
I was wondering is there a way or an app to watch youtube videos in 720p, not just HQ? Thanks.

I think it also has something to do with the quality of the video. If the quality is low, the video wont have a HD option.
Hope this helps.

It's not the video, I think. I have ogYoutube and official Youtube apps. Same thing with both of them. I have H+ connection btw.
I saw a tweak in custom rom to make youtube videos play in hd. Is there a way to do this with mobile data connection too?

Youtube HAS got a HQ option, it is already in HD
Settings -> About Phone -> System Update
But, I wouldn't really use stock, without rooting ^^ You NEED these Xtra options ^^
Oh so youtube HQ is 720p HD? I did not know that....

In a way... But, what I ment was; That the phone itself, is running in a HD resolution, (720*1135) and Youtube is basically forced, to provide HD...
Or better, it chooses, which is best, for your current bandwidth

Not to jack his thread, but does that mean that you can't see 480p and lower videos or am I just misinterpreting what you are saying?

You can, but you won't notice, because of the HD screen... It basically runs in HD, all the time...
To explain it better:
You have (as an example) a Windows-PC. You open Youtube. Click on a video, let's say, that your reolution is aboout 1440 by 720...
You put the video full-screen. It runs in HD, because of your screen resolution, even if the file is running at a lower resolution. When you click HD, it just multiplies the amount of logical pixels, in a physical pixel, causing the effect of sharper corners, brighter pictures, etc...
And the app, basically just renders the video, to do the same thing, as on a PC... It only renders the picture, at a doubled rate. And when the bandwidth is high (1000kb/s or higher) it doesn't need to render, because Youtube automatically sends the video in HD...
The HD option appears on wifi. When on cellular data this changes to HQ quality, not quite as good. HD on wifi is the best quality by far.
anyway to make it HD on data as well? I have seen other phones where they have modified youtube app that lets them watch HD on data 3g

I think maybe on a custom rom, but I haven't searched specifically. It definitely would be painful over cellular unless you have Verizon lte. The HD versions really are high quality and huge data.

You have to enable HD in the settings of the app...it doesn't play HD by default...and it will play in HD no matter what data you have 2g, 3g, 4g or wifi...but obviously if you are watching a video in HD on 2g its gonna take forever to load

Just found this out today while watching Youtube videos on Data connection.
- If you open HD video in landscape mode on the GNex, it will go into HQ mode
- If you open HD video in portrait mode to start, then when the video is loading in portrait mode, change the orientation to landscape, it will go into HD mode (and quality is much much better than HQ mode, I would say real HD quality)
I tested this on 4.0.4 GNex GSM with the same youtube video on data connection. After this test, I realized HQ is no where close to HD quality.
Hope this helps =)
Hi,
I've been looking (for a while) why we can't update to the new youtube.apk with the HD feature. Since the youtube HQ is really a ****ty quality on phones, I tried to get some kind of "real'' 720 p videos.
On my googling, I finally found this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715
It's really better now.
Hope it helped.

This is caused because the official youtube app plays at 480p resolution and you cant change it to hd quality. Either watch your videos from a browser that can play flash videos ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579795) or use an alternative youtube app like this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715

I experienced the same issue in KitKat but its lagging in every quality. I heard that some people got für same problem in für G2. Maybe its caused by a too low CPU frequency vor something like this. Using cm solves the Problem on the g2 so I'm thinking about switching to cm, has anyone with these issues tested how it works on cm?
Thanks in advance
Good day,
I just noticed that the youtube videos in app only go up to 360p. This is horrible. Is anyone else have the same problem? Is it just version related?
Thanks

That how the default YouTube app for Android. If you want higher, you need to root the phone and use a modded version of youtube.

In that case I would say that a Google problem? In any case, there are modded youtube app on XDA that allows 720/1080p.
It sx, I might take a look to modded apps or mod this one myself, if I find how.

If you're rooted change your android version in build.prop to 4.4.2 or 4.4.4. Then reboot and 480p will appear. 720p or higher are useless on a qHD screen.
If you want to have 720p, install app settings and then edit screen option for youtube to 600x1024, it will appear 720p option
(for better result use dpi 220 and font scale 90 too)
On xda you can find a modded Youtube version that supports 720p & 1080p. It also supports "play while screen off" = the best feature ever! Works great on my S4 Mini!

The video has to be uploaded to a higher quality, most videos on YouTube are not higher than 1080p.
I have no issue seeing the 2K resolution when on a video that was uploaded in 2K. See attached photo.
Try the same video I did.

Have you updated your YouTube app?
If so, then the blame falls on Google. I know they have some lists for specific devices and being able to do such capabilities like VP9 playback.
If you are rooted, check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-patched-youtube-vp9-60fps-playback-t3418216
It's the one I am using, I had no idea it had an effect on 2K resolution too.
I am not rooted stock and waiting for nougar update....okay i will try contacting google fkr a possible sollution
Solveddddd.......i just uninstalled the installed updates to the youtube app
In other words uninstalling youtube from playstore and then trying playing a 2k video give me 2k resolution.. Updated to latest version again....and working
