Need to get back to stock 100%, may have softbricked? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello,
I've been doing the runarounds all day with my Note II. I've been around the block a few times so I'm comfortable using ADB/Odin and the like. I have the pro version of the Note II toolkit.
I'll spare all of the details, but for now I'm able to get a booted ROM, custom or stock recovery. In TWRP, i get a message "E:Unable to mount '/preload'
Is this something I can ignore? Or do I need to get a good Odin & PIT file (I have one) and reflash/repartition my device?
Thanks

Ignore twrp does not have proper mount point for preload. Does not affect anything.

Perfect, that's what I suspected, but I'm trying to start from vanilla scratch ATM.
Thanks for your prompt reply =]

Vanilla stock? Guesding from your title that would be touchwiz 4.1.2 unrooted stock recovery. I use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36388145. After flashing a few wierd things will happen but this is normal. Once it boots up you will have 100% stock mc2 phone just like it was new. Hope it helps.

Yes I frequently use that as well =]
I just had a bundle of very strange things happen today while flashing the MK4 update from platty. My Play store disappeared, literally poofed, not installed, and that started a long string of "first-timers". I decided to just go back to the beginning instead of trying to fix whatever happened. In the process I softbricked, but I'm up and running again.
Thanks for your help.

TW rom issue!

Hi everytime I flash an tw rom on first boot everything works perfectly but as soon as I reboot I get this error phone.android.com has stopped and it keeps doing it so force closing each 15 seconds..
I tried to reflash whit a full wipe various times different tw roms but it still happens??
Also while im at it dont feel like opening another thread I have cwm6 touch the latest and during a nandroid backup it says backup of /data has failed some sort of error ....
I really want to go back to tw tired of aosp any ideas?

Wipe everything and odin flash the root66 firmware. Start over from full stock rooted, but clean.
Run your nandroid again and write down the error. (Save log to sd).
Seems to me there is some corrupted data getting left behind. I'd format the external sd as well. But at least backup and delete the Android folder. (Contains 2 folders inside, data and obb). You can rename to Android-bak if you prefer. Do this before wiping and flashing root66.

Thing is I don't really have access to a laptop anymore and it's really hard I could use mobile odin I guess but this all started since I started using cwm touch might first try to go back to non touch cwm but the process will certainly require a reboot which again will give me force closes...

The data error I had too, but on twrp and it's a known thing all over recovery threads for a while now. The error thing happened to me a while back but a root66 fixed that, you should also get the other bug fixed with in the same process.

Mobile Odin isn't hard to use at all. I highly recommend using it in place of cwm and twrp, except for when a nandroid is needed.
As for the cwm touch, have you considered trting twrp? Personally I prefer it over cwm.

There's no reason at all to be nervous about trying a different recovery. Thousands of people have been using it w/o issue. Personally I think they are both really good, I just prefer twrp. Give it a shot, if you don't like it, install cwm.
It shouldn't do anything at all to your current rom. Recovery is on a completely different partition. And you can install w/o flashing. Use goo manager for twrp or rom manager for cwm.

[Q] flashing a rom without bricking?

I cant flash a rom and have it work. I have tried several ROMS like aokp, jedi, smooth, jellybeans, etc and they almost always brick. Jedi worked but google services crashed back to back to back to the point where i couldnt even use the phone. does anyone know of a 4.3 rom that works on att sgh-i317?? i basically went down the list on galaxynote2root.com and tried them all but no success.
I have root, have TWRP installed and flash the rom and it bricks. i factory reset first, then install and nothing.
any ideas?

Have they been tried on sgh-i317?
I did these exact steps:
Rooted phone and installed TWRP recovery
put AOKP Rom on SD card and booted into recovery mode
Wiped/Factory reset through recovery
rebooted into recovery
installed AOKP ROM
booted and bricked- hangs at "X" aokp bootup screen
Have you installed gapps after flashing an aosp rom? I am running carbon rom right now... Earlier today I was on aokp. I have used them all and I have a I317. An att note 2

Download your rom and gapps again using a PC...
Then place the files to your SD using a card adapter if no USB connection is possible...
Then fully wipe the device again from within the latest version of TWRP recovery and flash the new downloads ...
You may have a bad flash ...and you are not bricked...g

I did those exact steps and it did not work. i tried flashing pac man rom the last time and it got stuck in a boot loop too. I think there are some files that are corrupt or some temp files somewhere that are preventing a successful flash. my binary flash count was 9. and that was just on this run, ive tried flashing several times before. each time the only way to recover it is hooking the phone up to a pc and using kies to flash back to stock firmware. this sucks.
What version of twrp are you using? I have never had this issue you are having and I have flashed every rom on this forum for our device.

9 counts ??
Uh....yeh...not right ...
Have you messed with device partitions in ODIN ??
If so...something is definitely wrong ...
At this point ...you may want to consider a full return to stock and allow the PIT to properly restore your partitions..
Just follow the return to stock guide (sticky )...in the general section ..
Once restored to stock with a corrected flash counter you can begin again using CF auto root as your root method..
It sounds as if you have root issues and possible partition damage...
One other step you can try first is to boot into download mode and re-root using CF...
That may help....but certainly won't hurt anything...then attempt a clean flash again..
If it fails ...then the return to stock and rooting again seems prudent ...g

I used the sticky on turning your phone back to stock which used odin. I followed that list perfectly which said to flash stock using odin, root using cf then using triangle away, then super user to fully unroot. Then I installed clockword mod recovery, booted to recovery mode, cleared all cache and davlik and factory reset again, then installed the aokp and it got stuck in a boot loop

yeah i flashed Aospa, but i did do it through CWM...for some reason my SD card wouldn't work after the update so I went to downgrade back to stock. I tried flashing from ODIN with the stock image but it was failing at the boot.img part every time. Maybe I got a bad stock image? I'll search for the stock through xda and re download and try. just sucks because it took almost two hours to download. thanks again for everyone's help.

Just a few questions from a new owner.

Hi guys, my S3 has finally bit the dust and my contract isnt up so i'd have to spend an absurd amount on a new phone from sprint.
So I bought THIS!
http://swappa.com/listing/AQQ856/view
http://www.urbanarmorgear.com/collections/galaxy-note-ii/products/scout-galaxy-note-ii
And the case of course!
My question is what is the state of 4.4 roms. Because right now my S3 ( though i cant get any mobile data anymore due to hardware issues) is running 4.4 Cyanfox and it runs superbly.
Im looking for a little 4.4 in my life which roms are good? :good:

When you get it check to see if it's upgraded to 4.3. If not, don't accept the upgrade to avoid knox and happy flashing. I've also been running cyanfox (ART and HALO turned on ) with no problems.

Would you care to elaborate as to what knox and happy flashing is... I am but a mere plebeian.
Here is my ASSUMPTION:
Locked bootloader stuff they added to make XDA angry?
Edit: I read up on knox a little and it seems like I was right atleast to a degree.
IF the device is infact 4.3 what can I do to root it? Is it more difficult with 4.3 to root?
Yes you can root but Knox is not only in the ROM but the bootloader also. If it comes with 4.3 I would advise doing these steps.
1. Use Odin to flash recovery (use twrp for now you can change it later) but make sure the reboot option is NOT selected.
2. After successful Odin disconnect from PC and pull battery. Boot into recovery vol+, menu, and power button.
3. In recovery flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36388145.
4. It will reboot and show some weird things then reboot again.
5. Now you are on mc2 (4.1.2) and your Knox bootloader has also been replaced with the mc2 bootloader. If you plan on flashing a custom ROM no need to root this version. Skip to step 7.
6. Use cfauto root and you are done.
7. Now use Odin to flash your recovery of choice this time make sure the reboot option is selected.
8. It will reboot into recovery and you can flash any ROM you want. Custom Roms are already rooted unless you use Omni ROM.

Ah okay! So i can basically default back to 4.1.2, and with knox gone i can flash custom recoverys and roms.. Man knox is a punch in the Andriod Nads.
There are ways to root and remove Knox but once your Knox bootloader is tripped it can not be reset (yet). A tripped Knox can lead to service issues. So downgrading is easy and pre-knox bootloaders have flash counters that can be reset.

Mobile hotspot does not work on stock 4.3 deodexed roms without flashing the hotspot hack. You will need to find and flash the correct version hotspot hack for your rom. Ex. MA7, MC2, MK4, etc.
Do this: Flash Phil's recovery 6.0.7.9, wipe everthing, flash rom of choice (I recommend LorJay's stock deodexed MK4 without Note 3 features), upon first boot you may need to Odin flash the WiFi fix (from your PC only), then boot into recovery and flash the MK4 hotspot hack, reboot and setup phone, Success.
If for some strange reason you still get that error message when turning on mobile hotspot, I'd flash a custom AOSP ROM such as Slim ROM, Carbon ROM, etc. Those Roms have hotspot fully functioning right out of the box. Keep us posted.
Still no good. Thanks for suggestion tho. . Haven't tried asop but not a Fan. Any suggestions on wiping or formatting(how to) the internal part of phone to go from scratch.

Here you go. I recommend the Odin method.

It seems as if Sprint has done something to your phone because everything you have dine should have worked. Something isn't right. That's why I suggested trying an AOSP ROM for the time being just to test this theory. Then you can flash back to stock or whatever you choose. You could also flash a custom Touch Wiz rom that has hotspot already working. If that fails you definitely got a phone that's been altered somehow by Sprint. I've yet to ever see this but I'm sure its very possible. Just my opinion.
