Nandroid b/u vs copying everything to pc - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I'm just trying to understand.
I know how to make a Nandroid backup using TWRP. And I know I can use this b/u to restore the system.
If, instead of the Nandroid, I copy every thing on the Nexus 7 to my pc, including the root drive, would recopying all those files back to the tablet restore the system in the same way, or not?
How is the Nandroid b/u different?
Thanks.

Help with Nandroid files.

I'm just looking for a clarification here.
I understand that by doing an Nandroid backup, it backs up EVERYthing, from Rom, to apps, to data, all they way down to texts and every intimate detail about settings. I was wondering, when I do a Nandroid backup, and it saves the "nandroid" folder on my SD card, is this EVERYTHING I need?
Reason being is this.
I WAS running CyanogenMod6. I have a nandroid backup on my SD Card of it.
I switched to Ava's froyo rom.
I want to go back to Cyanogen using my nandroid.
Could I:
Transfer the Nandroid from my SD to my computer then create a NEW nandroid on my SD of AVA and have these be two complete backups of everything minus the special folders on my SD that isn't a Nandroid folder?
I guess in easier terms im asking, is the ENTIRE nandroid backup stored in the nandroid folder and contain just the
boot/data/system images along w/ the md5 file?
What recovery are you running? If you're on AmonRa you can just make another nandroid backup of your current ROM, then go into restore and pick the prior backup (they're catalogued by date/time of backup).
I'm not sure how ClockworkMod recovery works, if it's the same or not.
I have something like 7 backups on my SD card. I need to pare that down though so I just have my original stock 2.1 ROM setup and then my current ROM as those are the only two I really need.

I'm Running CWM right now for recovery. Kind of wanted to switch to the AmonRa, searching on how to do that.

[Q] Recover data from a nandroid backup?

I made a backup when i first decided to flash a ROM on my phone, but i didn't know about apps like titanium backup at that time, where i can just backup an app or game and also backup the data along with it.
is there a way to get into any of the image files from the nandroid backup and retrieve data like game saves/data and stuff?
You could always backup your current ROM, restore the old ROM, install titanium, restore your current ROM and use titanium to get back the old stuff.

Do a search for a tool like unyaffs. You can use it to extract the data partition from your nandroid backup. Then you can grab the data from whatever apps you are trying to restore individually and copy the files back to your phone.

[Q] How to update a ROM and keep apps/game saves etc?

Hi, I'm new to rooting and to this forum. I have a HTC Desire that I am using that I rooted yesterday. The process was quite simple and I installed the Evervolv 3.0.0p10 - Jelly bean for HTC Desire yesterday and everything seems to run smoothly (apart from the camera but that's because its still pre-alpha) but when a new version comes out I don't know how to flash the next update without losing all my apps and game saves. I understand that you need to go into boot into Recovery mode then go into Clockwork Recovery but how do I backup all my apps? What I don't want is to restore to an older ROM with the apps on but what I do hope will work is somehow I can get the apps back on the new version of the ROM. Can someone help a noob here on how to do so please
Thanks!
Use titanium backup or mybackup from playstore to backup apps+data then save the backup on ur computer.

also, before you flash any rom update, or any flashable zip, make sure you nandroid backup!
in clockworkmod: backup and restore -> backup
nandroid backup saves your phone's EXACT state: apps, contacts, texts, homescreens everything, so you have a safe point to restore to in case something goes wrong.
these are stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup, you can also move these on PC for safekeeping (plus they start to take up a lot of space).

Thanks I did install Titanium backup and I redid backups for everything (I think) because it says "1 backup" underneath all the apps. What I don't understand is how I can save it onto the computer and how to restore everything, such as the apps onto the new ROM I have flashed onto the phone?

Plug ur phone into computer, select connect as disk drive and u can browse through ur files on sdcard and just copy the backup to computer or if u have a card reader, use that and do the same. To restore the apps on new rom just put the backup back on ur sdcard and download titanium backup from playstore then u can restore them. Never used titanium backup but im sure its pretty straight forward. Maybe eddiehk6 will give better instructions.

nandroid backup & dropbox suggestion

Hello,
Right now, I am saving my nandroid backup to dropbox. I am doing it the long way.
First, I do a nandroid backup to my phone. Then I connect my phone to my computer then drag and drop the nandroid backup file to the dropbox in the computer.
Then, If I want to restore a specific nandroid backup, I connect my phone again to the computer and then drag whatever nandroid backup file I want back to the phone. After I do this, i do the restore.
Is there a way to make this less of a hassle?
thank you in advance,

[Q] Restoring nandroid (TWRP) backup from one phone to another?

Old phones input mic is broken, getting a new one. Both are 16gb ones, backed up everything with Titanium and created a nandroid backup, then copied everything from the storage to a USB stick.
I know it's not as simple as installing TWRP on the new phone and restoring it because the serial is different, but is there any way to modify the old backup so it can restore on the new phone? For example if I create a nandroid backup on the new phone and copy certain files/dirs from the old phones backup to the new one, will the restore work? Or am I just gonna have to unlock / root / install new factory images / rom / gapps / kernel blabla from scratch and then restore with titanium backup and copy the storage folder over?
Thanks in advance.
