Hello im a long time galaxy user. I've had every device since the epic 4g on sprint. Recently due to events plan on moving to Tmobile. I own the galaxy S4 on sprint but dont want to just get the same device again. So im stuck between the two Devices.
Never owned a Note or Nexus device. My only con to the note is I feel there wont be too much dev support compared to what im used to. Then the nexus is only a 8mp camera but maybe thats not a big deal.
Would really just like some opinions and mini reviews. Ive noticed several users here own both devices

I own both
And im keeping both. I use my note 3 with the galaxy gear and it has come in handy many times, especially when your hands are full. But i also carry around my nexus 5 and use the pebble watch with it. Depending on what mood im in or what i will be doing that day, will depend on what phone I use. Dont worry about the development on the phones. Instead worry about what feels good in your hand and what will better suit your needs.
I recommend both.
Bigger (and better) screen, S-pen, the ton of software features you get with Samsungs, better camera, if it does get aosp then you now have two different OS choices, bigger battery, wifi calling if on t-mobile, I'm sure there is more but that's what I like over my N4. Don't get me wrong the Nexus program is legit but the Note is the best phone I've ever owned hands down.

Nexus 5 doesnt have a removable battery, or expandable SD storage...
Note doesnt get directly updated from google when new updates are released...
If your in to modding then I would go with the Note... personally I own the GN2 and GN3 and have purchased the N4 for my brother, sister and her husband... neither are bad devices but I prefer the Note

Note 3 takes some amazing pictures with its 13 mp cam, everytime I take a pic or someone else does and they see what this phone can do there blown away. But yea im a bit biased towards the note line, if you like faster updates id go with the nexus. The note 3 does have very great dev support tho and were all able to flash international roms as well as cross carrier roms so theres plenty of variety..

I think it comes down to size preference. I have the n3 but gf has the Nexus 5. I like how hers feels like a phone. But I like mine for certain tasks

I never used the Note, but i just wen to its website and I would prefer the Galaxy Nexus (I own one) because f many factors: The note screen is 5.3 inches big, this is not a phone. Its a small tablet nd its to bif for me. The difference seems to be more software related. Software can work on any phone, some one only have to make it.
Also, they probably sell the stylus for 50 bucks.
I would consider the galaxy nexus over the note as well. IMO the note is too big for a comfortable size phone, and still too small to watch videos.

I would personally have gone with the note, but now have a gnex because i am on verizon and the radios dont work well together.
Gnex has been great though and I certainly dont regret it. ICS is great and I think that touchwiz is really annoying personally.
The reason I wanted a note was because the screen size since I have large hands, and because the battery life.
But Gnex actually has a better screen in my opinion, cause it has a higher pixel density 316 ppi vs. Gnote's 285.
To me it really majorly depends on what will feel most comfortable in your hands, and what carrier you are on.
Also if people say the note's processor is faster they are likely comparing it with quadrant, an app not optimized for ics
Always Nexus because of Google updates and huge dev community

They might have similar specs but for me they don't serve the same market. 5,3" is so much bigger than 4,65" that it's not "pocketable" anymore for many people.
Go into a store, pick up a Note and judge for yourself if this "phone" is something you want to carry around every day. For me that was all it took to pass on the Note and buy the Nexus.
I was convinced that I was going to get the Note. I do a lot of work in documents, terminal editor, and the browser and would have loved the extra screen space. Plus, the Note has a microSD slot. Then I found out that the radio does not currently support both T-Mobile US HSPA+ bands and I would be limited to EDGE. No way...
The other concern that I had was that this is sort of a niche device and I was concerned that the ROM support would not be there like it will be for the GNex. Coming from the N1, I have to feed my crack flashing addiction.
I still have some remorse over not getting the Note, but the GNex is truly a great phone. I've been cleaning out my N1 so that the kids can use it to play games and such on wifi (sometimes tethered to my GNex) and realized how SMALL it is and how clunky the gingerbread ROM feels now.
Have the GS3. I love it. Best phone I've ever had. I'm getting the itch though. I was seriously considering N4. Reviews dont seem to be as positive as I hoped, particularly from those coming from GS3. Which made me look at the Note 2. I love that phone. But is it too big? I don't think it is but I also have the N7, so do I even need the bigger screen? I rarely use my GS3 for anything other than phone calls and texts. Am I wasting my money? I'm thinking I am...but not sure. Anyone else considering either of these phones?

IMO it's either the s3 or note2. The nexus only has 16 gb of storage with no chance of increasing, has a fragile back that will crack if dropped, and is made by lg which hasn't made many great phones. The camera is only average and also has a halo haze and its not that much faster in real world tests. As for the note, only you can decide if its too big, other than that its actually a little better than the s3.
I've pretty much ruled out the N4 at this point. I'm going to check out the Note 2 tomorrow. If I get the note would that replace my N7? Enough to give me an excuse for getting N10??

I don't wanna start a flame war and I'm not trying to diss you but I'm just curious as to were you've been getting your info from. From all the people that have gotten the phone I haven't heard them say anything of what you just posted.
From all the reviews I have read, they say it's very smooth, the camera is very good, but not as good as the S3. The back is fragile but not as fragile as people seem to believe. The hardware is very good even though its by LG (it's pretty much an Optimus G) which is a very good phone by the way.
Oh yeah and the screen on that is much better than the S3. I believe the NOTE 2 has the same screen type as the S3 (correct me if I'm wrong)
The only thing that I really see as a downside is the damn storage. I just can't believe Google thinks that 16gb is enough now days. Even though there is the cloud, carriers restrict you on data.
Overall if you just use your phone for text and call I would go with the N4, since storage isn't a priority for you. I'm sure everyone prefers the pure Google experience with timely updates. Plus it's cheap without a contract.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
You bring up some valid points...especially that I'm only using my phone for calls and texts...N4 would be perfect for that. Pure Google...would love that. I guess I was hoping I'd use my phone for a little more. Hence Note 2. As far as the screen, I hear the AMOLED is too saturated with "fake" color. I love that screen to be honest. Fake colors or not, i think they are beautiful. I've yet to see N4 in person...or Note 2. Tomorrow I'm going to the T-Mobile store..hopefully they have both. Note 2 and GS3 both have AMOLED screens.

I'm actually getting ready to switch to a Note 2 on Verizon as soon as it comes out. I love my S3, but I really want that huge screen, and extra battery life.
I've been with T Mobile for over 10 years, and their customer service is great, but I really want more reliable and consistent coverage. I'm actually rolling the dice on not being able to flash custom ROMs(or just having limited development) in exchange for a better network and LTE.
There's no way I would go with an N4, and that's only because of the 16 gigs of storage. I have a 16 gig S3 and had a 16 gig external SD card, and I still ended up having to upgrade to a 64 gig card. But if your not big into music, movies or games, then you probably don't have to worry about that.

Why would custom ROMS be limited? Is it Verizon or the Note 2 in general?

I heard VZW has locked bootloader and possibly hasn't been unlocked yet, could be wrong though

N4 is a great device in my opinion. I love the vanilla Android and assurance of updates.
However, a lack of a removable battery and expandable storage is a big grippe to me. I like having the option to increase my storage capacities.
If you're worried about the size of the Note II, simply pick one up at the T-Mobile store or anywhere they would carry one. It's definitely a large device, it felt kind of awkward to me, but then again so did the GS3 when I first got it.
The N4 has the best price to performance ratio of any phone out there today, I believe.
That's a huge sweet spot to me.
I think that you'd be happy either way. All of these phones are great and should last you a while.

Locked bootloader and even if it gets unlocked, my understanding is that there is less development on Verizon LTE phones. Might just have to do some research on porting my own ROM's, but I really think I could get used to running TW and just using a different launcher. Once we get root, we can at least do a few mods and use root apps.

I like the note 2, its a very nice phone very fast, my coworker bought it and he loves it, I wish the s3 had the quad core processor like the euro did, that would make it even better. I kinda feel as if I got a gs2 with a bigger screen. If all you are going to do is calls and text then the note 2 is overdoing it. I would stick with the s3. I love the phone and can't wait to see what's next from samsung.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I presume you have the money to upgrade. But let be honest, the N4 and Note 2 is not that different in term of overall quality compare to S3. I think you should wait till summer or so since by then something beastly and different will come out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but very few apps take advantage of dual core processing at the moment (let alone quad core) and the 2 cores on the US version are pretty fast (faster IIRC 1 for 1).
Hell tons of applications still come out for Windows that aren't multithreaded and multicore/multiprocessor systems have been around for many years now.
hardware wise
note 2>s3>n4
reality wise
s3>note 2>n4
Guys as the title says I'm just curious if this is a good move or just side stepping. Checked one out today and like it but just wasn't sure due to the specs
Same display as my nex
720p
No sd800 or 3g ram
What unlike is the big batt, big screen, I see a good amount of ROMs, benchmark scores dbl my nex.
The n5 doesn't wow me and reading about the note 3 Knox scares me as possibly no development. The lg g2 interests me but not unlockable and want a little bigger screen.
So do you n2 owners feel it would be an upgrade from my nex?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I'm probably a tad bit biased, but I would say "Absolutely"
It has/is going to have 4.3 support from samsung, so much third party development, and i am guessing it is fairly cheap now.
I never owned a GNex, however the GNote2 was a VERY worthy upgrade from my AT&T galaxy S 2. The screen is brilliant and they battery life is more than wonderful for me.
I'd say that you should watch many reviews on it, first impressions, etc. and maybe even see if a friend or coworker has one that you can hold and see if it fits your liking.
My only concern for you is whether or not you want to be on the "bleeding edge" as the device is what, a year old now? by the time of your next upgrade (if you're on AT&T's 2 year plan) it will be three years old. You probably will still be getting CM and whatnot builds by the time this device is "obsolete" for you/your contract is up, however I cannot be sure about the official builds of Sammy touchwiz or whatnot.
So, all in all, yes I PERSONALLY would recommend this device (for people like myself) however not for everyone.
I had galaxy Nexus and also Note 2. I got to say coming from Nexus, you will definitely feel that Note 2 is much faster. The size and the weight of Note 2 is noticeably bigger and heavier. Though I think it is not as bothersome to me. I do wish the screen to be just a tad smaller so it is easier to carry. Overall, it's <good upgrade. Though with new devices on the market,it is hard to promise Note 2 will get much attention in term of development. If you always want to flash roms, Nexus is always the choice. Nexus 5 has a lot of good things and should last longer. Note 2 is prob only to be able to last 1 more yr. Knox is also coming to Note 2 sadly. Looks like Samsung is going to turn a lot of people away with Knox. IF you can go to a store to play with - Note 2 to see,t yon like the size and weight, it would prob. be the best option before you made the purchase

I checked it out at the store and did like it. I liked the size too. Knox from what I've read makes dev almost a non issue and if n2 gets it....the 4.3 update will b out soon .. Will Knox b in that update? Love my nexus but want something bigger. I feel now the nex is 2 devices back everyone will b on the n4 or n5 and the gnex will be gone soon. Only other option is the g2 although I wish the body itself was a bit bigger. The HTC one but its actually smaller than the nex

Wait for note 4 boot loader / Knox situation . if it's locked and Knox situation has not changed then either get a note 3 or stay away from Samsung all together . note 4 will have that dual WiFi antenna thing which is the only feature worth getting other wise I do t see them slapping 4 g of ram of 64 GB memory . faster CPU is useless and redundant as of now specially the way google is lowering requirement for their OS. The wrap around screen thing is useless to me because my phone is always encased
OP I was in the exact situation as yours. I've been using Nexus 5 and wanting to get a bigger screen, namely a Note. I weighed in the current trend, and am convinced that Samsung isn't gonna make Note 4 super interesting, so i decided to get a Note 3.
So far I am not disappointed. Touch Wiz has matured and there is no need to deviate from stock based ROMs.

Samsung has been crap this year. I really wouldn't have my hopes up for their next upcoming flagship. After all, it's just a phone. I waited a whole year for the damn s5 and it turned out to be a disappointment. I got the note 3 instead, and I totally recommend it. It will feel huge at first, but you will eventually adapt to the point of no return. After all, it's just a phone.

Awww my good friend. Do it, do it, it'll make you feel good good good.
Really, do yourself a favor and get the 3. I did last month and oh boy, everything is great and no you don't really need to root, I did because I can't live without Viper audio and cerberus and remove bloat to clear up memory, ( not just disable them). Using a custom rom, it was wicked but I've changed to hyper drive rom, both fantastic. So long story short get it, and become happy for ever, until next year at lease.
Or do as I did and get the Note 3 and pay the extra $ for Jump! and when the Note 4 comes out switch

Had it since day one and there is nothing better out there now. No S5, HTC One (M8) or IPhone can beat this beauty and the beast phone. Only the Note 4 can surpass it when it comes out.
You will not regret getting a Note 3. May want to wait till S5 comes out in case you can get a Gear watch bundled for cheap if interested in it.

I kinda agree that there really isn't anything out there better yet. I mean things like 2k display (not needed and bigger battery drain) 2gb ram is a step backwards, and no stylus (if you use it) and the Snap Dragon 801 is only 200mhz faster with the same gpu. So at the minimum I probably wouldn't even look til the 805 SoC came out or 64 bit (which isn't even needed yet).
That not even mentioning someone has to come up with something really innovative or significantly better like the isocell with OIS. At this point, we're really at a point of saturation.
is worthed to put the money on a s5 or to wait for the note4?
Thats not an upgrade they are not the same category. Thtats more of a downgrade. Phone pbablet etc. Just dont do it wait for note 4
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I agree, if you love the Note 3 you're likely not going to like the S5. It's quite a bit smaller screen but the phone is almost the same size. No Stylus (if you use). You just aren't comparing apples to apples and i also believe it's a step down from the Note 3.
On a side note, I love having the latest and greatest but this is the first phone i had that i never am finding myself looking for an upgrade. The Note 3 is amazing and there isn't really anything out there better to the point you would even notice a difference. i mean the phone is barely 6-7 months old and the spec war is at a stand still. All the phones are about the same now spec wise. So i say just relax and enjoy your phone for awhile.
I had the S5 for about a week and was definitely unimpressed with it. Smaller size, no stylus, and the biggest killer was less RAM. 3gb to 2gb is a big difference when it comes to Android.
