I was on stock, un-rooted firmware version MD5. Went ahead with the official 4.3 upgrade through KIES. Don't like it, want to go back to stock MD5. Trying to ODIN back with official FW file (not the first time I've used this) and when I start, it fails and what is weird is that it appears the bootloader is changed as well from the 4.3 update. It has 2 new lines in the upper left corner (Warranty Bit: 0 and BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 1) Now, once the ODIN failed, another line, in all red letters on the download screen underneath those previous mentioned lines, states
SW REV CHECK FAIL : Fused 1 > Binary 0. Any ideas? Phone works 100% on this new 4.3 from TMO, just cant seem to ODIN back to 4.1.2. Any help would be super. Thanks!

Is not possible for right now, until devs will create a new root app or something like superSU or I don't know ! :crying: Same to me ...
Your Boot loader is probably secured.
Try Root66 image and get back to UVDMD5 Rooted. From there, use Doc Holiday's thread to get 4.3 upgrade.
As it stands, right now if you flashed the official firmware or OTA, you will not be able to Odin flash any previous firmware. Maybe if you were never rooted....
For now though, you shoukd still be able to flash cwm/twrp and flash another rom. you will be limited to the 4.3 modem, but otherwise should be ok to run a 4.1.2 rom.

How/ What did you do you fix it? I'm stuck in a rut :l
I was trying to few things. But essentially I was trying to get back to a custom recovery so that I can flash a compatible rom. try flashing a recovery in Odin, stay away from the CWM. Flash to TW RP or something like that. I will try to help out more as soon as I get to my laptop

Hm... Interestingly enough it worked! I flashed CWM 6.3.0 though, sent me straight into stock hehe :good::good: Though I'm still curious how long until I can root it

Boot recovery, then reboot system. It should ssk if you want to root.
Better yet, flash one of our roms. Or, download the supersu zip file from chainfires thread. (Or in my sig, but its not up to date)

There are several ways to root. But if you don't get rid of knox iits almost pointless.
Co-author root didn't work, and nor did Root66

This is why everyone should try to search for information on anything and everything before flashing it to your device. Even if its an official update.
As stated many, many times, once you flash the 4.3 update, you cannot flash older firmware again. Roms are ok, older firmware can brick you. Your weird folder is androids implementation of user profiles if I understand it right. May as well get used to it now, I don't think its going away.
And for those interested, the root66 firmware works fine now as far as I can tell.
If you experience instability, you need to factory reset.

If I did softbrick it, is there anyway to restore it?
You can try first wiping just dalvik and cache, then try factory reset.

Thank you Doc , It has been said ..Over and over and over.. OTA 4.3 update means you cannot flash older firmware again! I was one of the lucky that waited and installed you ROM and it has been stable . I placed a few Mods like Apps For 4.3 TW
For those just refused to READ and have NOT done a OTA update to 4.3 Like DocHoliday77 and and many have said .. here goes one more time..

You can still run these roms and gain every advantage, with none of the problems!
There so many other 4.3 ROMs to play with DocHolidays, Sarahai, mrRobinson and now aamir123. . YOu just to READ before run in head first into the OTA.
I have been trying to keep up with all the 4.3 update stuff but its just so hard with 15 different threads and it being updated everyday. I stupidly updated OTA 4.3 before coming on here and reading and it blows! Samsung is stupid for releasing such a unpolished update. But besides the point, I have been having a problem with out going calls, and battery life. When I will press to call someone the call ends instantly and I have to restart phone for it to allow me to call out. Has anyone else had this problem?
Also, are we any closer to getting 4.3 rooted? I know developers are having problems with Knox etc? If not is there anything I can do to make this update better or do I just have to suck it up? Thanks for the help guys.

1. Uninstall KNOX with Titanium.
2. Flash CWM twice (first one failed), Now I have CWM.
3. Download T999UVDMD5 (Deodexed)
4. Flash it via CWM.
5. Voilà !!
Now It has the partition as it comes from Factory !.
It's there a version similar to this one, running on Android 4.3 (Stock Deodexed, Without KNOX) ?

So I have a question Doc, I know I posted about this in the CM11 unofficial thread as well, but I am running your Non-Knox, CiQ free version and I have CWM installed, and I'm perfectly rooted after I updated SuperSU from the Play Store, but when I try to CWM Flash a rom it throws an error about the ro.bootloader and it lists out all the older bootloaders. So what I guess I'm getting to is what would it take to use the new bootloaders with any of the ROMs?

If you have updated to official 4.3 by any means then don't try to downgrade your boot loader and rom as it may brick device
If you have not taken official update then it depends what is your current boot loader and what rom you are trying to flash
So if you are sure that you haven't gone for official update then you flash dmd5 firmware then try to flash rom
Be sure before doing anything

Hello, I'm having a strange issue with my GS4. I have rooted it and flashed a couple different custom ROMS on it, but I decided to go back to stock so that I could get the 4.3 OTA. I did the triangle away and then flashed stock 4.2.2 software through odin. However, when I go to search for the update, I get the following message " Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.". In fact my device status still says CUSTOM under device status in about phone. Could this be because the flash counter is still tripped, or did I flash a bad stock firmware download?
Also strange: I've noticed that the sound my phone makes when I lock it is not the stock sound, it's still the lock sound from wicked V8 Rom.
Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just my personal experience, but whenever using Odin to revert back to stock, it always works right if I flash a non-TouchWiz ROM via TWRM/CWM THEN use Odin to revert. When reverting via Odin from a modified TW something always tends to stick around.
As far as returning to official status, you should be able to use Triangle-away on a rooted/stock firmware then temporarily unroot to install the OTA. Just a question though; why do the official OTA which introduces the Knox counter? There are CWM-flashable pre-rooted, non-Knox 4.3 TMO TW ROMs out already...

Thanks for quick response. So you're saying I should root, then flash a stock aosp or gpe rom, and flash stock rom from there? I actually did have a gpe rom on my phone the last time I went back to stock, but I had wicked V8 first and went back to stock in between.
Another question would be if that small thing like the lock sound would be what's making me not be able to get the ota, or is it because the flash counter is tripped still and it's saying that I'm still custom?

The reason you can't OTA is because your flash counter is still tripped. If it says you are on a custom firmware then you won't be able to update via OTA.
No need to re-root. Just use Odin to flash a custom recovery. Once there, I'd flash whatever non-TouchWiz ROM you have on-hand... Wicked, the TouchWiz Infamous ROMs, GPe ROMs (maybe, I don't know about these) I would avoid. If you already have CM10.x-11, ParanoidAndroid, Liquid, etc readily available, say, on your SD card I'd flash one of them. No need to flash the gapps, kernel, whatever, just the base ROM itself. Once that's done, use Odin to flash the Stock MDL .tar. After that, I'd say flash CF-Auto Root, run Triangle Away, then in the superuser App there should be an option to unroot (or temporarily unroot). Once that's done, you should be able to update via OTA.

Ah, okay. I think I understand that, I'll give that a try. Thanks for all your help.
Okay, so I tried doing everything you told me to do and got some weird results and thought I'd post them for anyone else that may run into this problem.
I flashed a custom recovery through Odin, then flashed the AOSP Liquid Rom like you said. I then flashe the stock MD5 file through Odin and let it do its thing. Once it was done, that's where the weird stuff started. The phone rebooted as it should, but then it got hung on the white T-mobile screen. It just sat there for a very long time. Now I've done this enough times to know when its taking too long and there's a problem.
So I did something that I know probably shouldn't have done and I held down the power button until it turned off. I then tried to boot it again to no avail, same thing.
After this I booted into the stock recovery and decided to do a factory data reset from there. (I was pretty sure there was nothing wrong with the stock Rom as I've used it before; there must have been something still there from the Liquid Rom causing problems.) When I rebooted from the recovery this way, it finally booted right up.
I now thought that I needed to flash CF-AutoRoot and then triangle away, but no, for some strange reason my device status now reads OFFICIAL!
I searched for the update and it is now in the process of downloading.
(Strangely enough though, the lock sound from wicked V8, is STILL there. I don't get it and I don't even want to know anymore.)
Sorry for the super long post, but I thought that if anyone else was having my same problem they should see this.

I got a new note 2 in india with latest android 4.3. It apparently has MJ9 bootloader. Is it that I cannot install a custom rom on this at the moment? I tried installing through ODIN but it failed and the phone showed the message "unsupported version". Then I had to recover using Kies.
Please let me know the current solution available.

You can do any customization on your phone like a normal phone, but customizing it means that you have triggered the KNOX counter to 1. Thus on a stock rom you can never use KNOX if KNOX reads 1.
FYI the MK4 (bootloader) or MJ9 (babseband version) has blocked installation of any custom roms on our n7100s via odin. You cannot even downgrade to 4.1.2 official via odin, So flashing via recoveries is the only way left.
And also it is recommended that you install custom roms via Philz/TWRP/CWM recoveries to flash custom roms and everything.

Thanks, but I would need ODIN to install recovery also right (remember its a new phone so dont have a recovery installed)....would that be possible?...considering knox just blocks out odin

alrights guys I didn't see this anywhere in ur forum so here it is, after exchanging my s4 for a replacement, I got it with 4.3 and all this Knox nonsense already installed, Now I don't really care that much for samsung's warranty but I went out and look for a way to root our latest without triggering Knox counter just head on to the thread below and check it out... it has a catch but I would say it's worth the trade off.

Anyways... I've used this Verizon method on my buddies ATT Galaxy S4 with a locked bootloader on a 4.3 MK2 baseband. It does not trip the KNOX flag. There are no "trade-offs." It functions well. Chainfires AutoRoot works as well.
So with this method you cannot make a nandroid backup OR even restore one?

I have not tried to make a nandroid with a locked BL and will try tomorrow (damn sure it won't work). Best bet is to try Online Nandroid Manager. Nandroid backups require a custom recovery, it has nothing to do with having root.

No, this will only root your phone (give your apps su/superuser access). You will still need to flash a custom recovery (i.e., PhilZ, TWRP, CWM) to flash roms like a custom Vanilla ROM. If you are on 4.2.2 bootloader, you can simply flash a custom recovery and flash the ROM. If you are on 4.3, you will be on the KNOX bootloader and if you flash a custom recovery to flash the ROM, you will void your KNOX warranty. If you don't care about the warranty or has expired, there is no difference.
1) Download Vanilla Rom,
2) Flash custom recovery tar (i.e., PhilZ, TWRP, CWM).
3) Go into recovery and flash rom.

I dont really care about the warranty, if its samsung and not t mobile.. But that isnt a def answer yet.

Well, even some of the T-Mobile apps now recognize if you have root and could possibly use that as proof that you voided your warranty. Tmobile/Samsung, vice versa, won't be much difference. You'd just have to find a store person that isn't knowledgeable on the subject and get a replacement. Good luck.

Yea I notice after I posted LOL.. a and here I was thinking I found the "holy grail" of rooting LOL!! but anyway those that Need to know just like it has been said.. this will get u rooted with out triggering Knox. this only applies to those that upgraded OTA or got their S4 already with JB 4.3 in it.. like I did after a warranty exchange... HOWEVER if u install any Custom Recovery u will trigger the counter VOIDING ur warranty FOREVER!!! LOL well maybe not but at least til someone (and who knows if someone ever will) figures Knox out. So think twice before you do anything, cause no here will take responsability for your actions...

IFAIK, until I plan to flash a custom ROM I shouldn't need a full Nandroid. I can always flash a stock ROM, and between the Google Backup/Restore and TiB, I should get almost everything back. Music/Video, etc are all on the MicroSD.
Unless I'm sadly mistaken. This is my first foray into messing with the SGS4. I was very active flashing on my HTC HD2, starting with various builds for WM6.5, and then moving on to SD builds of Android and then NativeSD with cLK, etc. I was running Tytung's KitKat until I got this phone in December. I work for a small company and the SGS4 was my Christmas Bonus. The HD2 was just too long in tooth to keep up with all the advances in Android. But, since you could flash everything - radios, bootloaders, recoveries, builds, etc., I could change out/update my version of Android almost daily.

The beauty of a nandroid backup is that it takes a snapshot of your phone as it stands. Within five to eight minutes, you can restore your phone as it stood before it messed up. No re-downloading apps, changing settings, replacing system apps (i.e., installing Note 3 My Files and Gallery), etc. It saves the hassles of slow TiB/Helium restoration, especially if you have hundreds of apps. Sure, you can start fresh and manually restore things, but having it done within eight minutes without lifting a finger is extremely nice to have in your arsenal. Has come in handy several times for me since I test ROMs very frequently.
Congrats on your bonus, a very nice bonus indeed. It is a great phone. I was thinking about switching to a Note 3 or waiting for the S5 but this phone is perfect for my hands. Note 3 with an Otterbox Defender case is too big for my taste and the S5 is still a ways off. Plus, the development for this phone has far exceeded my expectations so I'm a happy camper for now.

What method did you use to install a custom recovery? I saw this in the thread:

If you fail to read this, you will be taunted.
1. You can't install custom recovery and custom ROMs using this technique. See Safestrap for a way to install some custom ROMs.
2. Resetting the "Custom" and open padlock indication during boot can be worked around using the Xposed Framwork and Wanam Xposed. Get those two from the Play Store.
In Wanam, tick "Security Hacks", "Fake System Status".

Did you use the safestrap like he suggested? I just got a replacement from t-mobile, i can't be stuck on tw lol.
root is still better then no root lol thank you for the info.
This is all great info, on rooting 4.3....
but how do you UNROOT ?

Go into SuperSU, then click permanent cleanup.
You have to make sure busy box is removed as well, or system will show custom

If the only mod you did was to follow the instructions in this thread, then you aren't changing the ROM, you are only giving yourself Root privileges.
To Unroot, go to the thread in the original post, and look at the second message in that thread.
Here's the link to that exact message:

You will be
1) removing BusyBox
2) Using SuperSU to "Full Unroot"
If you've done more than was laid out in the original message in that thread, then you will probably need to
3) Remove any Custom Recovery
4) Flash an original ROM

I need help asap! I tried using the video on this website to root my tmobile S4. I downloaded Kies, Odin 3.07, ROOT_M919UVUAMDL.zip, and CWM as recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-jfltetmo.tar, I did NOT install triangle away( i forgot). I went through the steps and passed in Odin. then, when I pulled the battery and booted in CWM i couldnt find the file so i went to the store to buy a sdcard. when I came home i re-ran through Odin and found the root zip on the external sdcard. I successfully installed the root zip and clicked reboot. my problem arose when it showed a "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" in red, and a "SET WARANTY BIT: KERNEL" in yellow. it seems to be frozen in this screen and i can only use the CWM and Download mode. I have tried re-using Odin .
Please help!!
That's an old root method. You can either
1) flash a custom ROM and go about your business
2) Odin back to stock firmware and root with cf-auto root or towelroot

1) You can find tons of Custom ROMs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/development
You usually flash them to your phone via a Custom Recovery such as CWM or TWRP. Or, is some cases you can use ODIN. Read, Read, Read, Read before your flash. It is very easy to do, but you need to understand what you are doing. All Custom ROMs come pre-rooted.
2) You can download a stock ROM from here:

Or, you can use Kies to download and install the most recent firmware for your phone.
TowelRoot is a new option for rooting stock ROMs that are version 4.4.2 (KitKat). This method of rooting doesn't trip the Knox flag.

Thanks for replying however, you do not flash custom ROMs via Odin, you need a custom recovery like twrp or cwm.. Stock firmware you do flash via Odin.. And their Knox flag is already tripped, wouldn't matter

Thanks for correcting me that most of the time you flash Custom ROMs via a Custom Recovery on the S4.
But, if I'm not mistaken you can flash Custom ROMs via ODIN as long as in the right format and you select the correct partition.
However, most of my Custom ROM history is with a HTC device, so I may be mistaken.

It is possible but 99% of custom ROMs are not made to be flashed with Odin, in the past two years I've only seen about 1. And it is also inconvenient
