[Q] Amazon Appstore on Rooted Kindle - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently installed CM11 (Kitkat) on my rooted Kindle Fire, coming from
the MoDaco Rom which hadn't been updated in a year or so. Anyway,
the Rom is working fine, except that for some reason I cannot get the
Amazon Appstore (the app from the Amazon Website, not the version
installed on the Kindle Fire) to open. I can download it from the site,
and install it, but when I try to open it, I get the message "Unfortunately,
Appstore has stopped" and it closes down. I tried downloading it a couple
of times, same result. I also tried grabbing a titanium backup that works on my
phone which is also rooted with CM11, putting it in the titanium backup folder on
the KF, and restoring it; same result. I also checked on the Amazon website and
deregistered a couple of devices that are no longer used. Not sure what else to
do now. Before posting this, I looked at other threads relating and tried following
their suggestions, not of them have resolved this situation.
This is a twofold problem; not only can I not open the appstore, but back in the
day when Amazon was giving away a lot of decent apps in their free apps of the
day (instead of now when they are mostly games) I downloaded a lot of apps from
there. Don't wish to pay for them now.
So can anyone suggest how to fix this?

Same issue with the appstore, and also Kindle app
Recently I've also flashed the CM11 (with SGT7 mod i think), and encountered the problem. There are already 2 other guys asked the same thing in that thread. I consulted Amazon, all they can do is deregister the device. I'm not sure what caused it. Maybe need to re flash everything?

I finally got it to open, and the way I did it was that I tried again with the old version of the appstore backed up from TItanium backup, and I this time it ran. I'm not sure what I did differently from before. Anyway, I can open that one; but I cannot update it, when I try to do that, it won't open anymore, and I find I have restore from Titanium again.

I use the method saw in the other thread, " flashing the Like-Nexus-7.zip". then it solved the problem.
but I just have another question , maybe should be another thread. Does any rom for Kindle Fire now has the usb host function?

[Q] Paid Apps from Google Play?

I have looked around this site and the entirety of the world wide web and haven't found an answer for this. Maybe I looked two hard and missed the forest for the trees, but I don't know. So, here goes:
I have rooted my Kindle Fire and installed Google Play/Android Market. It works great and I am able to download free apps at will. When ever I try to purchase an app, however, I get the message "Error. An error occurred. Please try again." This goes for new apps purchased directly from the market and for apps which link to the market for purchase (Avengers Live Wallpaper, for example).
I am able to purchase apps using my computer and they download to my Kindle just fine, but that process won't work with the Avengers wallpaper, for example. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks.
Just a shot in the dark here...have never seen or heard of this one...
Did you set up a payment method in Google Wallet? If not, just go to your Gmail account on a PC, click More at the top and select Wallet. From there you can manage your payment method and enter a credit card number, etc., or update an expiration date, etc.
If you already did that, about the only thing I can think for you to try is to go into Settings | Apps | Google Play and Clear cache. If that doesn't work, I would go back in and Clear data (and cache if it has something in it again).
At least if you haven't seen it before, there is a good chance I didn't miss something about this problem.
1) My Google Wallet is set up and works fine from my computer. I even tried changing my credit card just to see if that helped; no such luck. Google Wallet is not the problem.
2) I have tried to clear the cache, tried clearing data and cache, and then restarted. Tried again and had the same error. Cleared everything again, tried again; no luck. Did it a third time, including another restart: still have the problem.
Thanks, but any other ideas out there?
Next question...and more shot in the dark stuff...
I take it you have not loaded a custom rom, so you grabbed Google Play (vendor.apk) and the Google Services Framework .apk and side loaded it to your KF. Before I loaded a custom rom, I did the same thing. Which version of the Google Framework did you load? I know that when I did it, I was careful to grab the GingerBread version, since the Amazon Stock KF OS is GB based. If you grabbed the ICS version, perhaps the payment processing is different between the two, but they are close enough that you can download free apps.
Perhaps you used the Kindle Fire Utility, so you may have no clue as to what I am talking about! I don't think KFU did the market install back then, I had to to it manually.
Unfortunately, I cannot remember if I actually bought a Google Android app and downloaded it when I was still stock. I did download paid apps, but they were processed on another device prior to that. If I had tried to pay and download, I might very well have gotten the same error as you.
Shots in the dark are still better than what I've got so far.
You are correct in that I have not installed a custom ROM and that I installed the Google stuff using the Kindle Fire Utility, (and that I have no idea about the differences). I would assume that the software used by the KFU developer was the GB based Google Services Framework (since you said the Fire is based on GB).
What's annoying is that I don't really buy many paid apps, and the few I do, I can buy from my PC. The main thing I want to do is get the unlocked Avengers Live Wallpaper (my 4 and 5-year old boys keep asking why they can't see Capt. America and Iron Man). To get the $.99 unlocked wallpaper, you have to link from the app (no direct paid download), so I can't get around this problem.
I appreciate the help and if you have any more shots in the dark, I'd love to hear them.
You can try to install this zip thru TWRP. This is what I have setup on my modified stock 6.3.1. This is the latest Google Play version.
I tired several more ideas, all to no avail. Thankfully, though, I reset my Kindle and started over and now it works.
Don't know what was wrong, but grateful for the help.

[Q] HBO GO no longer working

Forgive me if this has already been gone over but I cannot seem to find any other discussion about it. I am running the energy ICS rom for my kindle fire and I can no longer run HBO GO since the last play store update.
I uninstalled the play store app and tried to get the app from amazon but it of course says my device is not compatible. I tried side loading an apk for the amazon store version and it does finally launch, but force closes shortly after. I've been trying to find a more updated version of the amazon store HBO GO apk but no luck. I figured maybe if I could get the newest apk that might work. Anyone else with this problem? What am I missing here? Any help would be much appreciated.
You should get gederom. It works with gederom I think.

I'll try that. Is this a nice looking rom like energy? Eh I'll just give it a shot. Can always go back.
No luck on gederom either. HBOGO just says "HBOGO has stopped working" when you try to launch. If you try to do a report you get "Google Play store has stopped responding".
Any other suggestions? I wonder if someone could get the latest apk for HBO go on kindle from the amazon store if that would work. Is there any one that can point me in the direction or maybe somehow rip the latest version apk. The one out for download that I have seen before is outdated and also force closes.
EDIT: Any way to make the Amazon app store think I am running stock kindle fire? I'm just amazed I cannot find anyone else asking about this issue. I can't be the only person with a custom rom kindle fire that wants to use HBOGO can I?
EDIT2: Going to try using IMEI Generator to get amazon app store to let me load the app. Hope this works.

I've been having this issue since they made it official for JB. It ran while I was using twa_priv's JB ROM, but not so much on any other ROM. There's a permissions issue that's causing the app to crash on a lot of JB ROMs, but there's a patch/hack that needs to be applied to it for it to work. It's currently above my smarts range just looking at the coding, but I'm sure one of the devs will figure it out way before I even crack the surface on changing code level permissions.

Well I didn't get Amazon App store to recognize my custom rom Kindle as a stock Kindle, but it didn't matter after all. The following fix makes the Google Play store HBOGO app work again. Credit goes to user diesteldorf for helping me figure this out.
"First, your Kindle Fire has to be rooted but I assume it is. Second, you must have an app called Root Explorer installed.
The file you want to edit is the build.prop file. Go into the Root Explorer app and search for it. It will usually be somewhere in the system directory.
Next you'll want to edit the file. Root Explorer should keep a backup of the original build.prop file but you may want to keep a backup just in case.
Here is a link to what should be the stock build.prop for the Kindle Fire. You'll want to read it using a text editor or MS Office.
Here are the settings you'll be interested in changing:
ro.product.model=Full Android on Blaze or SDP
ro.product.brand=generic
ro.product.name=blaze
ro.product.device=blaze
ro.product.manufacturer=TI
Then Save the changes to the build.prop file and reboot your device."
Once you have done this simply uninstall the HBOGO app from your device if you haven't already and reinstall. Should fire up like normal now.
Once again thank you diesteldorf. I was about to pull my hair out(okay not really).
EDIT: One other thing of note, I actually went back to my backup of energy rom so I am assuming this method should work for any ICS rom but can't be 100% sure of course.
I am having this same problem using hashcodes jb rom. I will give this a try and hopefully this will solve my problem. I need my HBO fix!

The funny thing I found out is doing this fix makes the MAX GO app stop working. I gotta say if someone knows an easy fix that wouldn't interfere with this HBO GO fix i'll take it, but to be honest I really don't care about MAX GO at this point.
Also my feeling is that MAX GO will probably get the same store update that HBO GO got and maybe it will just start working again anyways.

[Q] Putting Amazon Kindle Fire Apps onto JellyBean?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I had a hard time searching for an answer.
There aren't too many people out there looking to put apps designed for Kindle's UI on Jelly Bean.
I'll keep it brief:
- Rooted my GF's Kindle Fire
- Plan on flashing JB rom
- Want to port paid Amazon Kindle fire apps onto JB
For example: She purchased the game of Life app for her Kindle through Amazon's app store. If JB is flashed, will I be able to download that same app directly from Amazon's website onto her JB flashed Kindle? I don't know what compatibility issues I could run into, nor the easiest way to do it if at all possible.
Can I make an .apk and side load them onto JB? Amazon's Fire UI is built off Android 2.3 (GB), correct? Her Kindle is running 6.3.1.
Figured I'd ask before flashing the JB Rom... I backed up everything on her Fire, I just didn't want to go through the hassle of re-doing something if I didn't have to
Anyway, you guys are brilliant here - thanks for any help I might receive.

It is hard to say for 100% about that specific app (Game of life). You can install the Amazon App store on Jelly Bean and you can install all the apps you have purchased onto any flavor of Android. It is already known that the Amazon Prime Video app will only run in a non rooted ROM based on the original install. If the app is one that is labeled as a "Kindle Table Addition" it may not run if your JB rom has been changed to represent as a Nexus or other tablet to gain more Google Play store exposure.

This is what I was afraid of. I don't want to repurchase that app $5... Are there any apps available through Amazon's App Store that will allow me to create an .apk of that app so I can try and see if it works sideloading it onto JB?

You could use Titanium backup to backup the app and restore it onto JB. If you already Rooted the KF you should have no problem loading TiBu.
---------- Post added at 05:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 PM ----------
Another option you could try would be to dual boot between a JB rom and MoDoCo. MoDoCo has a alternative install version and you could dual boot between JB and MoDoCo (A rooted and tweeked version of the original KF install). I did this for a long time so that I could still use the Amazon Video player. I got tired of playing with JB and went back to a single install of MoDoCo with a new launcher. Once you get past the Amazon launcher and you have played with JB long enough to be content the Fire works pretty decently.
You wouldnt have to if you sign into the same amazon acount. i have some apps like quickoffice pro ($15)on my stock kf, then i rooted it flashed jellybean, then installed amazon appstore signed into my account, and quickoffice pro was there in my downloaded apps
right, but in this case I believe the question is about kindle fire specific apps. The ones in the Amazon App Store that are labeled "Kindle Fire Edition"

Wow, why didn't I think of trying that... I should have.
I got impatient and installed JB. KF edition apps are not compatible.
I made backups of all the data that was on prior with TWRP... Is there a way to make a .apk with any of that data without re-installing KF?

I'll try dual booting with MoDoCo - how easy should it be to restore data with TWRP? I'm so used to CWMR that everything feels foreign.
So now i guess I plan on installing MoDoCo, restore the data from KF, side load TiBu, make backups of KF edition apps, boot into JB and restore KF apps there - is that sound logic, guys?
That process should work to get the apps installed on jb but there is still no guarantee that they will work. Try it and let us know how it turns out

Sure enough if you just back up your app before you upgrade, then you can install them on JB. I just did it for three different kindle only apps. The odd thing is when I tried to install them through the app store, I was blocked. Now why would amazon deny a piece of revenue?

ok. I am kind of in the same boat as you. I changed to jellybean using Twa_Priv's CM10 MOD back in August, and for a while I was able to use KF-specific apps. I switched a lot between jellybean and stock, because there were some things that I liked about the Stock firmware. Anyway, I quit that, restored to factory, and installed the latest build at the time of Twa_Priv's ROM. I did not cloak it to resemble the Google Nexus or anything else, yet now I have a different amazon appstore, and it won't let me get KF apps. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of going back and using Titanium Backup to save any KF apps.
what do I do?

[Q] Kindle App on 4.4 ROM stopped working

Merry Xmas to all
My Kindle Fire 1st Generation is rooted and now boasting JB 4.4 ROM. Everything worked perfectly until last night when Kindle App stopped working ("Unfortunately, Amazon Kindle has stoped" message). I have tried to reinstall the ROM, wipe the cache and dalvik, install 4.4.2 ROM, downgrade to 4.3 ROM and nothing has worked. Everything else is working fine.
Any ideas or similar experiences?
Cheers everybody.

Yes, I had the same problem, but I was able to get it to work by downloading Build.prop Editor from the Play store and using it to change the ro.product.manufacturer line from Amazon to Samsung. I'm guessing Amazon intentionally stop their non-stock apps from working on Amazon devices to avoid people using non-stock apps by mistake, but hopefully changing this workaround will work for you.

I, too, had the same problem, and your fix with Build.prop editor worked for me! Thanks, thanks, thanks.
There is also a "change to nexus7" zip file in the cm11 thread that probably does the same thing. This is nice because you just add it into the rom/gapps flash. The cm11 rom was the last one I tried to fix this issue before I found "the fix". Now I have to go back and setup HellFire because I haven't found a way to remove the lock screen in CM11.

It turns our non working Kindle app was the least of the problems I had. Shortly after that problem I started getting message SystemUI stopped working and then the screen would flash. 5 or 6 reinstallments, full wipes and the likes later I realised that the ROM was the culprit as after installing HellKat 4.4.2, problem seems to be gone. As for Kindle App, I think problem was latest update which was not compatible with 4.4. I stopped the app from getting new updates and its working for now. Had a glance in quite few Kindle related forums and its seems people agree with that as so many complained of app stoping after getting the update.
As for now, Kindle Fire is happily running HellKat 4.4.2 with lovely red theme. We will see how it goes.

So I just installed CM 10.1.3 and now my kindle app, amazon mp3 app and HBO go apps all crash. I had previously changed the build.prob file to enable access the HBO go, but the amazon apps always worked fine. I just tried to edit build.prob andi I keep getting told that the file is read only. I have tried root explorer and file expert. Any ideas?

Need Netflix apk compatible with AFTV Gen 1 Please

Hi! I have an non-rooted first generation Fire TV, and a 3 weeks ago when I started it up, I painfully discovered that pretty much everything other than the main Amazon app were simply GONE. I haven't the faintest clue as to why this happened, but after several attempts to recover the missing apps, etc, I finally resorted to a factory reset. I then re-installed all my previous apps, but only one of them failed every time I ran it: Netflix for AFTV!
Netflix invariably now immediately reports the "UI-800-3" error and it never stops. I followed all the instructions about how to resolve this problem, but it never works. One possibly critical issue is that, after uninstalling Netflix, when I use the main Amazon interface to attempt to re-download it -- or ANY other app! -- any click on any app to download it is totally ignored! No click sound, no response whatsoever!
So I used the "Apk Extractor" app on the Netflix app on my Second Generation Fire TV, and then installed it on the first AFTV using ADBLink, which completed without error. From then on the "UI-800-3" error nightmare began.
So what I need is a Netflix for AFTV apk that's compatible with First Gen Fire TVs running FireOS v5.2.1.1 -- Does anyone have such?
I've seen recommendations to use the APK for Netflix for Android TV, but that hasn't worked out for me.
Kindly help me. Thanks!
I've tried using ADBLink to install the following Netflix apks: Netflix_3.3.5.apk and Netflix_4.0.5.apk
The latter reports that it is incompatible with first generation Fire TVs, so I uninstalled it.
The former tries to run, but again gets infinite "UI-800-3" errors.
So I removed all the DNS blocks that were preventing Amazon updates, and went ahead (very reluctantly) and upgraded to the latest system, v5.4.2 (if I'm recalling it correctly). But Netflix still refuses to run without eternal "UI-800-3" errors!
Furthermore, when I manually navigate around the main Fire TV app looking to download Netflix, it's nowhere to be found! Every other app shows up and allows downloading EXCEPT Netflix!
What the hell is going on?

Happened a while back. Netflix is only allowing the most recent version of their app to access their service. And those more recent versions only run on FIreOS 5. So you need to look thru this forum to the numerous ways to upgrade your FTV1 to FireOS 5. It's that simple.
I performed yet ANOTHER full reset and ANOTHER system update until no further updates were available, and finally, Netflix appeared and installed fine. Happily, it works fine!
I haven't submitted enough posts yet that I'm allowed to post external links, but I will be posting the working Netflix apk in another thread, here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/netflix-apk-compatible-aftv-gen-1-please-t3628174
I updated to the latest prerooted rom by rbox (jan 8 2018) on fire tv 1 and now can't find Netflix.
I had it before upgrading I was way back at os3, 51.1.1.0 or something and saw it under settings all apps, cleared it's cache and data, then uninstalled. Now when I search for netflix it doesn't find anything. Tried resyncing my purchased stuff under my account and still don't see it. Should I try and reflash the rom now that I've removed my old netflix apk?

I had it before upgrading I was way back at os3, 51.1.1.0 or something and saw it under settings all apps, cleared it's cache and data, then uninstalled. Now when I search for netflix it doesn't find anything. Tried resyncing my purchased stuff under my account and still don't see it. Should I try and reflash the rom now that I've removed my old netflix apk?

An update: I got my answer in a similar board from @Sizzlechest :
"I just installed Netflix on my rooted Fire TV 1 with the latest OS and Netflix works fine.
EDIT: Here's a link to my Netflix APK: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjlFvM-kUCwh_VrvNbHA-1xdlIx0 "
