Amzer® 3500 mAh Battery Backup Solar Charger

Anyone saw this yet? It is pretty expensive though, lol:

I saw this on Fommy.com and was thinking about getting it.
How exactly does it work?
Does it charge it's own battery if not plugged in to the phone, then later when there is no sun you can charge your phone of the charged battery?
If so, that is kinda bad ass.

Yeah I think that is how it does work. If not, than that price is not worth it, lmao. Hopefully it works as how you described it though.

That is exactly how it works. It has a 3500 mAh battery battery built in. For comparison the Vibrant comes stock with a 1500 mAh battery.
That's actually not a bad price, considering that a 2500 mAh Innocell from Seidio will cost you about the same. The Innocell is an internal battery with a replacement back cover. I was going to get one but I'll probably get the Amzer now.
For comparison shopping you can go to ThinkGeek dot com and search for "solar charger" to find the 4 or so they sell. They even have a $200 for laptops.
Follow instructions for usage. Do not overheat or overexpose the Amzer Solar Charger to direct or indirect sunlight and AC/ USB charge.

I say it depends. If I need more batteries I'd rather get them separately and have a charger specifically for it like the ones you can find on ebay.
Taking out the old battery and popping in the new one only takes a minute while charging from a solar battery could take who knows how long.

direct sunlight means lots of heat (over 100F on a good summer day), lots of heat is not good for batteries. solar charger does not mean it charges from sun.......it needs any light source.

Follow instructions for usage. Do not overheat or overexpose the Amzer Solar Charger to direct or indirect sunlight and AC/ USB charge.

mini semi scientific answer: they use heat to turn into electricity, and it's not that efficient, but it's enough to work (and gets better every year).
So sure, any light source might work, but something other than the sun will basically not work that well. Having it in a lighted room will do zero for it, for example.

yeah, but there is a battery in side as well. if it was just a solar charger then yes, more sun = better

I saw a similar product on Dealextreme for much cheaper. From the feedback the important thing is to find out if the charging current is at least 700mA. If not the Vibrant might not be charged properly.

A solar cell does NOT use heat to produce electricity, it uses light waves. Full spectrum light is the most efficient but any light source will work.
The waves impact the cell and cause a potential difference on the diode, this then creates a current in the cell. Heat is actually BAD for solar cells, the cooler they are the more current they produce. This is one of the reasons that solar panels in snowy environments can produce more electricity than cells in the south. Reflected light off the snow is another reason.

It's cheaper because you get less. 1800 MAh as compared to 3500 MAh storage.

I looked up the reviews of the Amzer solar one on amazon and it didn't look too promising.
I decided to get this one (no solar):

People, the warning is not to put it in sunlight. It is to not put it in sunlight AND have it plugged into the AC/USB charger — thus providing 'double' charging.

You might want to look for one that includes a std usb adapter so you can use it w the oem cable for whatever phone/gadget, or get an Amzer mini-to-micro usb adaper for $5 (and get an adapter for your future phone, too).
But yeah. $70 is a little steep. I'd rather get two of these. You could get 4 for that price.
Edit: Im liking this. It says the battery can be replaced, and it doesn't say with what,exactly, but it looks AA sized to me. It has all the adapters, the port you plug your phone into is usb (yeah, you could probably scrap the cable and the adapters), and it looks like it chrges via the same port. None of these parts is entirely enticing, but the stuff in the bag, not to mention the bag, is a MacGyver use-for-everything in whatever way you need package. I think part of the appeal to me is the mystery as to whether it really is as all-purpose as I think it is. I love this kind of Asian innovation. I'm very tempted to support it. If I do, I'll report back.

Well i was looking for one and i got from dealextreme , but after 3 months, its not charging properly. Not sure why?! My brother got for me one and its good, he said he got from Chinabuye, its online store from China. Good battery life. so far so good.

The owner of Amzer, basically gets Chinese manufacturers to make his junk and label it Amzer. His products are the same junk you can find on ebay for 50 cents.

For this being only your second post, it sure does look a lot like spam advertisement.

Considering the hellfire conflagration a bad Lipo Battery can cause, I would be nervous about buying cheap knock-offs. If Seido charges $70 for these and someone else charges $4, you gotta wonder what you are getting. I doubt Seido has a $66 markup on their batteries.

it's not something just a deal on a cheap. battery if you want a spare or if like me your charge port is broken and use a few batteries and wall chargers, if you want to spend $9 for the same battery with a back cover go ahead, not Spam just a good deal, show me a better deal for a cheap extended battery. like I said I don't charge the batteries using my phone so these work great, good to charge and leave in the car or plus its always have a normal sized battery in my wallet

TEP covers broken usb ports too. I got a brand new Evo when I took mine in for repair.

I bought my evo used but tried to do the Touchstone mod and messed up sodering or something and now the charging port does not work and the g sensor doesn't work, but I do not miss cord charging I got like 5 batteries and 3 external chargers, that cost me like $30 for all that off cheap ebay sellers, so I always have like 3 batteries always charged and ready to go, don't even miss cord chargers any more

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Seidio had that large of markup considering they sell cases with a holster for $50. Which of course is just two pieces of molded plastic with a bit of psuedofelt and rubber finish. And which in my case, started to fall apart within 6 months after purchase. Frankly I don't think Seidio is the slightest bit better than the cheap eBay sellers, they just make a lot more money based on the perception that the charge more so they should be better.

Exactly alot of companies leverage their name so they can sell the same thing as other suppliers at a higher markup. It's good to know that alot of "manufacturers" don't actually make their own product, they actually contract out alot of their products.

I purchased a couple things from them already off of ebay. Shipping was a couple days longer than I expected but they are reputable. My battery I got from them also works great...

Finally got around to testing it...
Charged it with the phone off, unplugged and turned it on.
Charged it until indicated green then unplugged then powered down.
Repeated this process four times until icon indicated 100% power.
So far I'm down to 11% and have been going 42 hours and 50 minutes with my normal use (texting, couple calls, light internet use, light gaming).
All in all for $4, great purchase. I was even more so surprised when the eBay seller contacted me and told me it would not fit with the stock battery door (I already knew that personally). They informed me that I would be getting a battery cover I believe, or a full refund.
I didn't mind either, so I just said whatever works.
EDIT:: Checked my inbox today, and they are sending a back cover it looks like.
"Now the battery cover in stock ,and we have send it to you for first time ,this is the tracking#:removed
Would you pls check it later on www.usps.com"
Fun grammar, so we shall see what this holds in store for me.

I made an offer for the same price as the recently accepted offers and got rejected

When I went back to purchase another, they were $104 and some change.
My thoughts are they realized they did not fit the stock EVO and they needed to revamp their posting and or include a battery door.

Do a search on ebay, I found some by a couple different posters.
I can't post links yet but they are about $10

I charge mine with an exteral wall charger just for the battery, and between my two 3500 batteries in can go two days with each battery, but I usually just swap them every morning

I received my 3500mAh chinese battery yesterday and used it until it died. I charged it over night and unplugged it at 6am this morning. When I first pulled it off the charger it immediately dropped 6%, from 100 to 94. At first I was like WTF but I know the USB/AC Charger is notorious for this so I paid it no mind. It's nearly 3pm here and my battery now has 8% life left. Almost 9 hours battery life... something my 1800mAh chinese battery was already able to do. I know I can't expect much from a $8 battery, but I thought it would put out more juice than my stock one at least.... am i missing something?

3500 batteries just take longer to charge, use an external charger or charge with the phone off

I was attempting to get it before years end, and eTech ships from New York which would usually take 3-4 days as opposed to from Hong Kong which would take 2-4 weeks

Thanks. I didn't think about using the external charger, so hopefully tomorrow's performance will be better than todays. I'm curious though, if the 3500 battery wasn't fully charged, why did it show as 100% before I unplugged it?

Well, because my cappy has such a horrible battery life, im considering buying a second battery and a battery wall charger... My question is, how fast is it supposed to charge if it was a normal charger? Im looking to buy these 2

If you don't mind.your phone being a little thicker you should look into a extended battery I have one and its great go all day and still have over 40% at the end of the night.

I have the same set as is in the second link. I'll say this, the batteries are as good as the stock one, and great for the price. Also, having the wall charger for battery is very useful. So, that would be the one I recommend!
Also, I had terrible TERRIBLE battery life in the past. I mean, 3 or 4 hours and it was dead. The best thing I have found that helps this, is custom roms. I don't know if you are using one, but you might consider looking into those options if not.
The wall charger for the battery seems to charge the battery a bit faster than just plugging the phone in. It takes 3-4 hours to charge from dead.

i do have a custom rom But the battery life only lasts like 7 hours or so. I was thnking about the extended battery, but it makes the phone thicker, which i have to say id rather avoid. One of the greatest features of the captivate to me is how thin it is .
But yeah, as you said, the battery and charger are good enough Il be purchasing those tomorrow. If anyone has any other ideas, please shoot

I don't know how thick a storm is but it adds a quarter inch to the battery witch sounds like alot but I don’t really notice it when its in my pocket . I also think it makes it alot easier to hold in my opinion plus it only cost 13 dollars at cellularfactory.com witch was cheaper than all the oem batteries I found. I just couldn't carry around two batteries then you have to switch them when one goes dead and you have to charge them both but that's just me.

get the wall charger and extra battery. it way better than adding bulk to the captivate. looks absolutely retarded adding an inch to this slim phone.

If your repair center is close just go in and ask for a new battery free of charger. Sometimes they have them in stock sometimes they have to order them and send them to you in 2 days. All depends on the luck of the draw really. I have four batteries from doing it this way.

Ahh, the OEM dock + external charger.
Wanted to get one of those.
Had the same setup as OP's the wall charger that is.
I can say, the non-OEM wall charger doesn't charge that fast.

a few posts down is a mod for the NON oem charger to make the USB charge faster. unfortuanatly you cant make the battery part charge any faster. but it WILL charge faster than you can run out a battery so its good.
for buying OEM batteries, i have been told to avoid the G7 series Samsung batteries. Find the G9 series. i bought one for $18 on ebay from an american seller in new york.

Can't find any G9's over here. Went over to a Samsung retailer.
Got myself 2 instead G7's. Last's kinda shorter than that of the G9.

What's the difference between g7 and g9? Im guessing better battery life. Where do you see what the series is on the battery?

It's at the lower right side of the battery. Near the S/N.
Kinda tiny on the G9.
HUGE on the G7.

My phone came with the G9 battery and seems decent, can't really compare it to anything as it's the only battery I have for now.
After googling the G7 vs G9, it appears that they're region codes. G7 being for Europe and G9 for the US.

yeah, im just going to buy the charger dock and battery off ebay. (the amazon one)

Ran a quick search and didn't turn up much. Does anyone have advice or know where to get a solid deal on a portable charger? I've got to spend a lot of time in the airport/on planes in the next few months so something like this would be ideal. I found this:

I'd just be nervous about the brand. Never heard of it, and it does matter as far as how long the battery is going to last, both in terms of time before the thing doesn't take a charge/only holds a small fraction of what it used to, as well as how much of the rated capacity you are really getting. This one is name brand, and would be worth the extra 20 bucks, and has some extra capacity as well. It also charges off of micro USB, though they one you linked may as well, I just didn't see it on the main page.

I've had their batteries before, and they tend to be pretty good. Much better than some of the no name stuff you can get. Plus, you can charge a third device.

I would stick with Jackery

I like Jackery batteries. They work just as well as any other portable battery out there, but they have the added bonus of just looking nice (all models come in orange, some also come in silver and black). Some of the larger capacity models also had an onboard LED flashlight function. The flashlight function isn't great (it's about as bright as a keychain flashlight), but it makes sense to add a flashlight function to something that is already a battery.

QI Charger/Power Bank

I wanted to get QI charger w/ my Nexus and ended up getting one that included a 10,000 mAh powerbank for basically the same price.
I thought it was going to feel pretty cheap, but to my surprise it seems like its pretty good quality. For 40 bucks for both a QI and a power bank in one it's pretty kick arse! So be forewarned the "IN STOCK" status is BS it ships from China so don't expect within a week; I think I got mine in 3 weeks.
Also the instructions are horrendous, not sure who translated it but its actually comedy. I think says something like... "Use it if it bulges, smells or smokes." (instead of dont) and has FAQ's that have no questions. Literally every line in the instructions does not make sense.
So you can use this as a normal QI charger. As a powerbank you can use QI or plug it in through the USB ports (2) which makes more sense so you dont have 30% power loss as with QI. Powerbank is same shape as phone just about twice as thick and slightly larger width and length. Finished material is smooth so if you have a hard plastic case it may easily slide off or not become centered well enough to charge. I have a case no issues charging through the case. It does also get a full charge and it does not get my phone more than warm (same as wall charger).

I'd be very interested in a test to see what the actual capacity of this is. Im always wary with a no name brand battery from China because they tend to always overstate their battery capacities. Wish there were some reviews, but I might give it a go anyway to test it out myself.

Its weird how almost all of the qi power banks on amazon have no reviews. Seems like something everyone should have. Ridiculously useful. I am wondering why the one posted above is a good 25% cheaper than all the others of the same 10,000 mah capacity though.
Would absolutely love for the OP to test how many full charges of the Nexus 5 he could get from the device using USB and then Wireless charging, but that would probably take a while. Also OP, when you say that the case is smooth, is it smooth like the soft touch plastic on the back of the Nexus 5 or smooth like the shiny plastic on galaxy phones?

I'm waiting for RavPower Qi Wireless Charging Pad with a built-in 4800mAh battery coming back in stock. It seems like a great fit with my Nexus 5 as I checked a review from WPCentral.

no problem but may be a few days I'm getting over a day cycle on my nexus so far. I bought it mostly for the QI charger the bank was a bonus/ I will keep a log but try and get full cycles out of it to make it easier.
As far as the smoothness it is more like the shiny plastic on the galaxy phones. My phone has a plastic case it doesn't slide to much but I could see if it got bumped it would move. I had bought a screen protector someone posted that i don't like it's kind of rubbery or tacky feel i was thinking about taking it off and putting it on the charger so it was a little more "grippy".
Give me a few days I'll put up some stats for you

Oh I know, but the ones sold under the badge of Samsung or LG are usually dead on their mah capacity ratings. Not so much for random Chinese brands I havent heard of before.

Amazons having a 50% off deal on battery packs if you buy the RAVpower qi charger. I just picked up the charger and a RAV 8400mAh pack for just over 60 bucks. I've been wanting both for a while now and this deal was just to good to pass up. I do a lot of backpacking and have been debating between a battery pack vs. a solar charger for some time now as well. The pack is actually lighter than any of the solar charges I was looking at. And for 18 bucks was a no brainer.

so here are some stats on this as a power bank not sure how much power loss over a few days is normal but after a full charge of the bank using the cable here is what I came up with:
night one charger started at 51% .49 of the full 2300 mAh nexus 5 battery = 1127 mAh
night two started at 18% .82 = 1886
night three started at 22% .78 = 1794
night four started at 28% .72 = 1656
night five started at 9% died at 32% = 529

TOTAL mAh= 6992

Interesting. And that is using the cable and not the Qi wireless charging? Its always said that Qi will have around a 30% loss in efficiency, which would make your numbers perfectly in line with what a 10,000 mah battery should do. Of course if you were using a cable it might just be that the low cost of the device translates to a less efficient transfer of energy. Still able to get roughly 3 full charges out of the power bank is pretty awesome.

Yea thats through the cable, I know even turned off there is power loss on rechargeable batteries but I don't know what is normal power degradation equates to in a percentage. I agree though roughly 3 full charges may not be a full 10,000 mAh bank, but at the price even if it equates to a 7000 bank its not bad. Throw in the QI (which is mainly what I bought this for anyway) and this is pretty sweet deal :laugh:
I'll do it again and see what I come up with for round 2

it does shut off once it gets a full charge, using the cable as a powerbank. Never tried QI as a bank doesn't make sense so don't know this way.
