Hi all,
A family member is giving me a galaxy nexus in the next week. They bought it from and have been using it on the Rogers network. They told me that it only works on rogers.
I was under the understanding that the Galaxy Nexus are not carrier locked, could this be the case?
My family member is not too keen when it comes to cell phones, so I think that the Rogers rep told them something that wasn't true.
Thanks
Heeter
can unlock it

You can unlock it but you wont be able to useit on a cdma network which is bell, wind, virgin......basically has to be a gsm network, which rogers uses.
^
All nexus phones are sold unlocked.
So it will work on all GSM mobile networks (including bell/wind/virgin/Telus/Koodo/mobilicity), only public mobile uses CDMA.
Agreed with the person above.
I own a Galaxy Nexus, which was purchased directly from Rogers. It was always unlocked, and I've used it on Bell and another provider in Singapore.
Bell/Telus/Wind use UMTS (HSPA), so the phone will work fine.
Galaxy Nexus are not sold unlocked every time, mine was locked on SFR (French carrier) and I had to unlock it for the one I'm using.

Awesome, Thanks for all your responses guys,
This was purchased and used on rogers, but when it gets here, I plan on using it on my virgin GSM network, (Which I currently have three SGS3's on it).
Thanks all, again

Thanks
Heeter

Hello every one... i am waiting too get my galaxy nexus from 3... is there any way I can unlock it to all network as I am willing to use it overseas while traveling.
To my knowledge (north American) galaxy nexi are nit carrier locked unless you have the CDMA version if your gnex has a sim card it should support any card you put in it that uses the same network frequencies as the device
You can find the frequencies here http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_nexus-4219.php
Worst case scenario once you root and flash a custom rom I doubt there would be any simlock... .. but you shouldn't have to go that far

Thank you mate..
If it's on 3 UK it'll probably be locked at this point. There were only a few from the first batch that weren't. Try calling cust. support and ask them, O2 provided me with one for free. If not then you can get a code via eBay for about £10.

I purchased mine from a three UK high street shop just before Christmas and it is not locked to 3.I have only tried an orange sim and it worked perfectly.

Got mine from 4uphones on Vodafone as an upgrade, no lock or carrier spam. Hope the 3 one is the same
There's few operators that will lock the sim.
I bought my nexus on PAYG from three, I've been using my T-mobile sim in it since. They are sim free from three.

I am going to order a nexus from Rogers in Canada. Is the nexus unlocked from the start, just wondering? Or can carriers lock it?
They're "locked" out of the box, but to unlock it I just used a simple program available on the development boards. You'll also need the ADB drivers to connect.
FYI mine is a CDMA Verizon phone. Very easy to unlock.

Yours shipped with an unlocked bootloader ? Was it a test device? Or are you referring to a sim lock?

I bought my Galaxy Nexus from Rogers, and its unlocked. Just tossed in my MTS sim card, put in my APN settings, and voila! Works like a charm.
Yous are confusing each other. The GSM version is unlocked in the aspect of network compatibility. Meaning you can throw a AT&T/Tmobile sim in it & make calls/data etc. Now the bootloader is locked wich is unlocked with fastboot after installing the adb drivers. The reason for unlocking the bootloader is to flash a recovery image so you can root.

You don't need to flash a new recovery to root. That's what makes the Nexus-phones so awesome. You can boot them from code hosted outside the phone, be it for development-purposes, recovery-purposes, or like for most people, rooting.
Otherwise not debating your point. But this is a common misconception, so I thought I'd correct it.
every GSM version are not sim-locked
My first one from O2 was unlocked. The two warranty replacements from the same shop were locked. Go figure.

Okay, newbie here. Will be buying my first smartphone and I've decided on the galaxy nexus. First, some important info: I'm from Canada. Bell has the phone on a three year contract with a $50 plan, which I don't want. So I'm looking at buying an unlocked version so there won't be contracts and I can use which ever carrier I want.
NegriElectronics seems to sell it unlocked. (aww.....can't post links.)
However, when I asked the guy, he said that it was the GSM version so will only work with gsm networks. But from my research online and a similar post on this forum, it seems that any and all galaxy nexus phones have quadband gsm and pentaband hspa so will work with all carriers?
So I'm currently confused as to which one is correct. I really want to make sure. Since I'm new to this, any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Both are correct. The GNex is a quadband GSM phone, and thus will operate in all GSM networks.
Canadian carriers already killed cdma, so you can use it on basically any carrier you want on Canada. Only if it's not lte SIM card or anything like that

Thank you very much to both for clarifying. So wait, what if I buy the galaxy nexus from either windmobile or mobilicity as they both allow you to buy it outright without contract? Will I still be able to use the phone with other carriers or will it be locked to the company I bought it from?

I have a SIII bought when I was in Canada. The exact model is i747m.
Now I'm back to italy and I can't use it because it prompt for network unlock code.
Is there any way to get it or to unlock the phone for a free use - like debranding or flashing some italian rom?
Thanks in advance

You will need to contact the original carrier for an unlock code (Rogers, Telus, Bell, ect...) Once you insert an Italian SIM card it will ask for the unlock code that the carrier provided. There are also pay services online
to obtain an unlock code for a fee.
Lastly, you can never flash international ROMs to the i747m. You must stick with ROMs that were designed for that specific model which can be found in this forum. Flashing an international ROM could cause the device to hard brick.

So, the only two things I can do are contact Telus or paying some other service for the code?
Will Telus make me play?

That is correct.
Generally the carrier (Telus in your case) will not make you pay. But they can say no if the phone never completed its original contract, was stolen or anything like that. If that is the case your only alternative is a paid service.

You can unlock it for free yourself. But you need to be on stock ROM in order for this to work.

since you bought the phone in canada, buy an unlock code from mobileincanada.com - you'll need to know which provider this phone is / was for. it'll cost you $20 plus tax. oh and this is permanent unlock.
good luck.
