Fresh out of the box last night, decided I need to root this thing. Can't believe I went almost 24 hours not doing it! Anyways... HTCDevs apparently is telling me I can't unlock this thing.. and runrummer is just cycling to the point it tells me to rerun it. Come on... I thought this was supposed to be unlockable? It's the reason why I grabbed this instead of the S4.

it is, and its easy.
I had to uninstall my antivirus to get it to work.
It took about aminute after that and I had S-off.
check to make sure you did everything right.
I don't run anti-virus software at all.
This is what I get every time.
I had to disable USB checking of apps to get mine to complete

Non usb3 port too right ?
Edit.. And you did download the correct version of rumrunner for the version software that's on your phone right ?
I see you downloaded rumrunner version .2 and you probably dont have that on the phone. Rumrunner version must match the version software on your phone so that's why this failing.

Go to your phones about version page in settings and match it. We currently have .2 (not common) .8 ( original launch) .10 (first ota) and .15 (most recent ota).
When you locate that version number then go download the correct matching rumrunner. My guess is you get it done fine after that.

Thanks, that made sense. I am on 10, so I did download that. Round 1, I did get this message though during the process (phone was laying idle on the desk while I was playing some Madden)... going to try a second time.
Second time worked! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
So I just used my upgrade to get the one after my galaxy s3 busted. I'm currently on .15 and I used the rumrunner .15 version but I keep getting "FATAL: Download updated package at ...."
Am I missing something?
::EDIT::
Alright I don't know what was going on but it finally worked... after many attempts. Regardless of the headache this caused I gotta give props to beaups and Fuses.

It took me twice as well. It is a mystery to me why nobody has done a full write up on the process. I see them all the time on here with Samsung devices but had to search elsewhere to find one for the HTC.
It took 3 different USB ports and almost 10 pours on mine but it eventually worked.

I didn't feel like browsing through a ton of pages on the rumrunner forum. And I'm posting this in the Q&A section as this is a question.
Has rumrunner been updated to work with the Verizon HTC One with OTA 4.4.2? I am aware that I probably should have rooted before I accepted the OTA 4.4.2 update, but if I knew that it'd be awhile before I was able to root, I would've rooted and installed a 4.4.2 stock ROM.
Thanks.

No it has not and it mostly likely will not untill August.
In the same vein...
In the same vein, does anyone know if Firewater is supposed to work with the same version (4.4.2, Hboot 1.56)? I haven't had any luck, but I'm not sure if that's because of my set up or just because it's not supported.

it wont work, the temp root that firewater uses was patched int he 4.4.2 release.
for firewater to work we need an unlocked bootloader from HTC (which VZW asked nicely to remove)
Going to have to wait for another exploit to surface.

Yeah I've tried every thing and nothing works, I got my HTC One exchanged a couple of weeks ago because the one I had just shut off and fried itself, I got the new one with 4.3 not realizing that it was actually rootable and I ended up taking the 4.4.2 update since I figured it wouldnt matter, sucks I was wrong and now have to wait quite a while as well. shame that something is there but they are waiting almost 5 months to do anything with it, but what can you do?
What ticks me off the most is Verizon, every other carrier has no issues with rooting the HTC One, why does Verizon care? I'll just never get it, its our fault and we void the warranty and we know this, other carriers know this and dont care, why Verizon WHY?

you could do what I'm leaning forward to doing, just call verizon and say that you have a purple camera tint problem and its really annoying, they should send u a refurbished one free or charge. of course, you have to send your current one in but it's not like they check or anything so it's pretty much full proof. got many refurbished phones that way, but it was not to get 4.3 or any other "rootable" software.the phones actually had problems.

this plan has worked for some members here. remember to tell them that you would not like them to update the software because that was the root cause to the purple tint ( not the truth but they will honor your request)

Might not be a bad idea. You can always backup the sd card before you do that.
Hi all,
I’ve searched around on a few forums for this but haven’t found a direct answer. I received my M8 on Wednesday and promptly unlocked the bootloader.*Then, like an idiot, I took the 1.54 OTA and proceeded to install TWRP/root, completely forgetting to do S-Off.
I tried the Firewater method last night several times with no success. I got the standard “whelp, this sucks…” failure message. In case it matters, I’m on the Sprint M8, but I decided to post here since the Firewater method appeared to have success with almost all variants.
ROM: rooted stock
Android 4.4.2
Sense 6.0
Kernel version 3.4.0-g255057cd
Software version: 1.54.651.8
Thanks!

As far as I'm aware version doesn't matter.
At least from what I read of the thread from when I was trying to S-Off my own. I must have tried a good 20/30 times to get mine to work. In the end I did the trick, whereby you drop a file, like a ROM or Video file (Something large) while Firewater does it business. This made mine work almost instantly, even after so many fails.
Warning: Apparently the above method could cause damage to your device.
I had issues but i think it was hw related. i have a new device. made in taiwan. got soff first try without moving files. now i just need to find thread on how to remove tampered

actually. i unlocked device with htcdev. installed phils recovery. installed SU and used stock with SuperSU installed and followed instructions at firewater site. i had very small hopes but it worked. so my wild guess is that chinamade phones like my previous was will not work due to the hardware. cause i tried with several. all made in china. this made in taiwan worked first time. flawless.

I saw several folks that were having this issue as well on Sprint thread. I got my Sprint device last night and while I didn't take the update I did chronicle the steps I took and had no issues getting s-off.
Ultimately you might try different methods of root. I just loaded ViperOne right out of the box, while it is my preferred ROM I also read in the Sprint forums that one of the MODs wasn't able to get it to work with some of the other rooted ROMs so I just started there.
While you've done the update all may not be lost. I'd try a couple different rooted ROMs, do full wipes, and see if you can make it work.

If you be on 98.18.94 do the OTA of the same name!
....98.30.1 do the OTA likewise.
More:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52716429&postcount=25
I was on 98.18.94 and updated to KK 182. I froze system apps and it refused to boot. Then i RSD'd to 98.30.1 and that gave me the KK 183. update. NOTHING on the phone changed. Bootloader still unlocked and everything. I believe they're pretty much identical and it doesnt matter which update you take.
I was kind in the same situation, I was on 98.18.94, but was rooted and couldn't take the OTA. Used House of Moto to go to 98.30.1 and then was able to take OTA. I still have the original KitKat OTA Blur_Version.98.18.94.XT907.Verizon.en.US.zip that I pulled before going to 98.30.1. Are you saying I should be using that version 182.46.10.xt907 instead of 183.46.10.xt907 since I originally had the 98.18.94? Any idea what the difference is between the 2 versions?

I no longer have a M. I did check the recoveries & they have different md5's.
There have been just too many borks associated with this neglect of name/build subtlety to ignore it.
Since I have the original OTA could I either down grade and apply the correct OTA or since I have an unlocked bootloader would I be able to reinstall the original without the down grade step?

Yes, I talked to our mutual friend about it a few days ago and was told the same thing. How stras1234 managed to acquire the FXZ so quickly is beyond me but truly amazing. We were highly skeptical when he posted that he had it on droidrzr. I guess we should have looked into it a bit further. LOL. But that's what prompted me to ask our mutual friend about it and when he said it wasn't out, my skepticism grew. Ah well. Most impressive!

Since the FXZ for KK was posted, I've updated my thread with instructions on how to use it. I'd just flash that and call it good. The whole 182 vs 183 nonsense is a red herring. There's no difference between the builds except the build number and signing keys. Personally if I still had a Moto phone I'd be sticking with the FXZ path regardless of what anyone says.

I dont now why..but i found bug with version 183..sometimes i got my phone cant turn on from lockscreen..and can only fix it using hard reboot (press vol up+vol down+power in the same time)..i hope with version 182 can be solved..and another question is after ota update my model number is XT905 NOT XT907 OR Razr M..dunno why
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
That's odd about XT905 (since neither the Electrify M, nor the Aussie Razr M got KitKat yet - they're both can be XT905 for some reason), but yes, you could try to flash again via RSD Lite for a cleaner system. It doesn't matter if it's 182 or 183 though, as it's the same version.
OT: But for the Electrify M which is XT901 an update is announced at Moto's site now.
A couple of months ago I asked if there was an upgrade path to the latest update for a non rooted completely stock Verizon HTC One. The phone belongs to my mom who uses it on Ultra Mobile. Is there anyway to upgrade it to Kitkat. Right not it's on 4.2 Jellybean.

Trying to do that. When I boot into recovery I get unable to access sd card for about 5 times and then it finally boots into recovery. When attempting to select apply from phone storage it states invalid operation and reboots the phone. Any suggestions?

Make sure fastboot is turned off, in the Rom settings before booting to recovery.

Thanks for getting back to me quickly. Fastboot is turned off in power settings and the same issue arises.

Well, this method used to work.
It may be that s-off is required to accomplish this now.
I can't really say for sure, as I haven't had a device that stayed s-on for more then a few days at most.
Wish I had a better answer for you.

Thanks for trying anyways. Greatly appreciated. I guess my mom will stay on 4.2.2 for the foreseeable future.
Just updating for any future users who may come across the thread. The solution to my initial issue is as follows:
For those not on Verizon you can still update by using HTC sync. After installing HTC Sync and connecting your phone, it will prompt you for an available upgrade. Follow the onscreen instructions and the phone will be updated to whatever the latest update is.

As long as you are stock I might add. If it reads a custom Rom you won't get offered an update. And btw, what the app knows HTC knows ?

So HTC knew I went from 4.x.x.x (while unlocked and s-off with root) down to 2.x.x.x to update to the newest through the app before going s-off and they took my phone to swap out. Cracked screen replacement. Sometimes they know but don't check.

The fuu app does not.
Some of you may remember me. Made the HTC toolkits from a few years back til about 2014.
I'm rocking the M8 right now, but I just ordered the 10. I've noticed this phone didn't even take off in the market, unfortunately. However, I am planning on bringing back my toolkit and developing one for the HTC 10.
If you don't know what my toolkit is, look in my signature. Mind you, it's been a couple years since I coded and my skills are horribly off. Luckily, I kept all my source files to reference back to.
Hasoon2000 will be back in the game!
Just received my HTC 10. Rooted it and what not.
The rooting process changed slightly from 2 years ago, but no biggie. Made a few adjustments in the code for my toolkit. Should have it uploaded by today or tomorrow.
I'm in the process of cleaning up my code and making the UI cleaner and have a better flow, compared to my old toolkits. Here's a sample of where I am at. What other commands would you like? Mind you, I have been absent from the rooting scene for 2 years, so I have no idea of what happened since. That is why I need your input!
Cool.
Will this work on the Verizon HTC 10?
Maybe firmware upgrades for both S-ON and S-OFF devices?

Now, is the process different for the Verizon model? From what I recall from my old Verizon model toolkits, Verizon phones couldn't be unlocked via HTCDev. Is that still true or can you now use HTCDev? Also, is what is the model codename for Verizon models? pfm/perfume? Got a picture of the Download Mode for me to look at?

Again, it's been a few years. Flashing update OTA/full ROM zip files should be the same for s-on and off, unless they changed something that I don't know about.
Also, who has the new ADB and Fastboot files and that can upload it for me? My files are old (what a surprise).

Did you unlock your bootloader from HTCDev normally? For TWRP, did you use the official one for the HTC 10 pfm/perfume?
What I'm trying to see is if the recovery is universal for the 10 or if they made separate ones for Verizon and for the GSM model.

I understood what you meant. My apologies on being unclear. What is the process for each way, and I'll try and make it happen.

I apologize fellas.
I have multiple of my accounts hacked the past few days. PayPal, Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo, other forums, etc. I was able to override all of the hacks and secure my accounts again.
Will need a few more days for this.
In the meantime, what features would you guys like?
I remember your toolkit. I used it with my one X a couple years ago and i found it very useful. It's really cool to see you working on it for the 10.
Also, finding and installing drivers could be a nice and useful extra.
Nice to have you back, I've used a few of your all in one kits. Started with the hox, happy days.
Man, if this makes it easier/faster to update firmware on S-Off and S-On I'm totally gonna love it!
Yeah, if it simplifies firmware installs that would be amazing.

Yeah. Still in the process. Modifying it for the HTC 10. Just started a new job, so life has been pretty hectic. I didn't forget about you guys.
