Options for rugged cases - Nexus 5 Accessories

What are the current options for rugged cases which make this phone (almost) indestructible?

The i-Blason Armorbox is about the best I've seen, not too expensive too http://amzn.to/1bvBZc7

The Ballistic and Seidio cases aren't out yet, but they're going to be pretty indestructible.
I am currently using the Acase Superleggera and it's pretty beefy. Silicone core + polycarbonate shell like the Ballistic case, but no grippy corners or back so it's still pretty pocket friendly. Downside is no built-in screen protector. Feels very well made, and has already saved my phone from a 5' drop on to concrete.

This has been the only thing keeping from making the plunge on this phone.
I learned a long time ago to make sure a rugged case was available before getting a new phone.
Otterbox is not going to support it (what a surprise), so I am waiting for the next-best thing to hit the market.
The Ballistic cases look promising.

if we don't get otterbox I hope we get trident case at least

Do you guys think the "cruzerlite" video of the drop test is fake?
In my opinion, it is fake because the camera cuts out everytime they show the slow motion replay.

I'm using the Sigen slim armor check it out on eBay or amazon feels pretty dam good check it out

Torn between a few cases. Can you help me decide?

Hey guys,
I am looking into buying a case now, and after looking through some threads here, I think I will pick one of these three:
Diztronic TPU case: http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Flexible-Protector-International-Packaging/dp/B0089F49P0/ref=?ie=UTF8&m=A2HOCXU5SC35JO
Ringke Slim Lite: http://www.rearthusa.com/galaxy_s3_slim_lite_kit
Incipio Silicrylic: http://www.amazon.com/Incipio-SA-302-Silicrylic-Silicone-Samsung/dp/B0085VAP38/ref=sr_1_1_m?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1342098764&sr=1-1&keywords=galaxy+s3+incipio
The most important thing for a case to me is drop protection, followed by thinness.
I have heard good things about all these cases, so I feel that I can't go wrong, but I'm having a hard time choosing.
Also, if you know of any other cases that you really like and offer good drop protection.. let me know
Edit: Looks like I'll go with the Incipio.. Thanks for the replies

If drop protection is top on you list then take the Rearth off the list. TPU is quite hard when compared to silicone, in a drop test the Silicrylic case will not doubt be much better.

+1 I currently use the Ringke but only because it's thin and provides enough protection to prevent scratches while still preserving the beauty of the device. I also have the Diztronic tpu and it should provide enough protection for low drops.

My silicrylic and my gs3 both showed up yesterday.
The case is very nice and definitely offers drop protection. The silicone doesn't seem to attract dust and lint like I thought it would.
I used to have a seidio active on my evo 3d which is the same type of case, so I thought I knew what to expect. I have to say though the incipio case is much nicer than the seidio case was. It is very sleek for what it is and the silicone isn't at all tacky like the seidio case was. It is very smooth and slides in and out of a pocket very nicely.
The all black looks nice on my blue gs3 too which is great.
I basically bought this case for times I may want a little extra protection, but I am so happy with it I think I will use it as my primary case. Fyi I ordered from Amazon and it only cost me $17 shipped.
I'm liking that incipio
I have this casemate one because it was all I could find the second day I had the phone. They come in all black now
Definitely buy the Incipio Silicrylic.
I have actually bought all 3 types of cases for my S3 that you listed in your OP, so my opinion matters more than these other guys! j/k -- 1) TPU (Cruzerlite ($10); similar to Diztronic and $1 versions on ebay); 2) Hard polycarb shell (Rock Quicksand ($10); similar to rinke); 3) Hybrid (Incipio ($18)).
After trying all the cases on, I can only recommend the Incipio if you care anything at all about protecting your phone, while looking good, and without adding as much bulk as an otterbox. The Incipio's Silicone sides and the hard case itself is also grippier than the others, and doesn't attract lint at all like my $0.99 silicone lint magnet on my old Captivate.
(Throw the screen protector that comes with the Incipio away, though. Crap quality)
I have the incipio and like it a lot...tried a letterbox commuter but took it back because I liked the incipio that much better...

Another vote for incipio :good:
I dunno, if thinness is number 2 you should stay far away from the incipio. It is definitely a fatty.
I say just suck it up and get the ringke or diztronic and just be more careful.
Look no further!!!
Seriously... you should +1 this ish.

The Incipio is an excellent choice. I bought all three and find the Incipio to be far superior, mostly due to protection capabilities.

I love my Incipio Silicrylic White/Gray case, but I just ordered an Otterbox Defender for the times when I feel I need a little added protection.
The only thing I don't like about the Incipio Silicrylic is that it doesn't have quite as much grip on the hard shell as I expected it to. Otherwise, it looks great, seems to protect well (though I haven't dropped it yet, and don't plan to), and doesn't gather lint.
If I wasn't so afraid of the phone slipping out of my pocket, like my iPod does all the time, I wouldn't even use a case.
But, a good case is a lot cheaper than total protection insurance. It costs more over the course of 2 years with deductible than I originally paid for the phone with contract. An an Otterbox Defender only costs $30-$50.
My vote is for the incipio
If you don't mind the extra bulk and want the peace of mind stick with the defender. The bulk is not bad, and it makes the phone feel like it's made of more premium material, I own it and it's great!

Get the Incipio. The Otterbox and Trident cases can withstand more torture but let's be honest here. Going with one of them turns a beautiful phone into one ugly ass crack whore.

The perfect compromise of a small case and great protection?

Alright guys, I need your opinions and recommendations. What are your opinions on a case that maintains a small and reasonable form factor while providing great protection, far beyond other cases of a similar size. Basically what case do you think is the perfect compromise of size and durability? I'm sure that a thread like this will help more people than
Please share your opinions, personal experiences, or recommendations, or just anything that you have to offer.
I am in the same boat. Want minimal bulk, minimalist styling and some protection. I'm usually OK with just scratch protection, i.e. those < 1mm thin snap on covers but am willing to go a little thicker
I like the Rock shell cases, the Incipio Feather, and the Spigen Air cases. Something slightly more substantial or even the same would be nice it it wrapped around the top and bottom of the phone as well.
Give this one a try guys - I use this case on my last 3 Android Devices and absolutely LOVE it!

a few cases that I have considered...
I'll start by offering a few cases that I have considered purchasing, and that I can't decide between.
Otterbox Commuter Case:
http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Commuter-Series/SAM4-GALAXY-S3,default,pd.html
It seems like this case offers great protection, but I've heard that it has issues with being very slippery, difficult to press buttons, and might be a bit bulkier than cases offering similar protection.
Trident Aegis:
http://www.tridentcase.com/shop-pro...00/aegis-case-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-i9300.aspx
This case seems to offer similar protection to the Otterbox Commuter, but at a size that is easier to hold and fit in your pocket. This might be a keeper...
Incipio Silicrylic DualPro Shine:
http://www.incipio.com/Samsung-Gala...-SHINE-Hard-Shell-Case-with-Silicone-Core.asp
I just saw this case today online for the very first time. It looks amazing. It may offer slightly less protection than an Otterbox Commuter, but it looks much more pocketable, and easier to hold. It also looks like it might leave enough room to attach a Spigen Steinheil GLAS screen protector, something that I'm pretty sure can also be done with the Otterbox Commuter.
Spigen Neo Hybrid:
http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/sa...g-galaxy-s3-case-neo-hybrid-color-series.html
Everytime I see this case I practically drool over how attractive it is. It looks very easy to hold, and is extremely sleek and sexy looking. Of course, it doesn't offer nearly the amount of protection as the Trident Aegis or Otterbox Commuter, but it might still offer enough protection. Opinions?

I've tried all these cases, and in all honesty - the Seidio Active Case beats them all hands down! No Contest! http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-active-ks-case-holster-black-p/bd2-hk3ssgs3k-bk.htm <--- I highly recommend this !

I can try to get some pics- my GS3 is the only camera I've got atm though lol - hard to take a pic of the phone in its case hehe. I'll search my house and see if i cant find my long lost digi camera - no promises there!
I've got the black Active case (no kickstand) and I love it. It doesn't slip, very grippy, still easy to pocket, also has a holster that is actually quite nicely built. The active is a slim case, that still protects the corners, top, and bottom. I've had this case for almost 2 months now and its been awesome. Its easy to remove and put back on. I'm getting ready to buy the Active case with the kickstand soon...
If you just want scratch protection and slim fit goto eBay or amazon and search for mercury. I've switched to my otterbox commuter for a week but came back to my mercury. Otterbox is good for drop protection but I only worry about that if I'm hiking and taking pictures so Ill swItch when I need to.

I love all seidio cases but my absolute favorite will be the surface with holster. Yeah, it won't give you as much protection as the "active" but it adds the protection you need - or looking for.
Now that I mentioned the above, knock on wood***, should i happen to drop my phone let there be nothing wrong
I like the D3o cases that T-Mobile sells. I had a Ringke Slim case but that offered crappy drop protection. I've since bought the D3o case and it seems to offer much better protection while still keeping a similar form factor.

Which Rugged Case?

i need help deciding on a rugged case. i've read mixed reviews on all. my main concern is drop protection.
the lifeproof seems nice and slim, but i'm worried it wont provide enough drop protection
i currently have a otterbox defender on my razr maxx, and it is my favorite case. however, i've never dropped it, so i can't comment on the drop protection. i thought for sure it would be my go-to case for the s3, but i've read many people say that otterbox dropped the ball on the defender for the s3. stating that drops cause the screen to break and the screen protector is lifted too far from the screen. i'm aware that the silicone stretches out over time, and i'm ok with that. since otterbox has terrific customer service. is the defender really that bad of a case for the s3?
i also have a trident kraken for my maxx. it is a nice stylish case, but i never use it because it is very slippery and hard to hold. the s3 seems to have a different design that might not be so slippery. but i also haven't read as many reviews for it as some of the others.
i've always seen the griffin survivor cases in stores, but only for iphones. they look very nice and rugged, but i dont have any experience with one. it would seem to offer the same protection as the defender. one concern i have is the port covers seem loose. like they would come open every time you pulled the phone out of your pocket.
the ballistic hardcore seems to be the same design as the defender and survivor.
the otterbox armor seems like it would be a great case. but many drop tests on youtube show the case constantly coming open upon impact. and many reviews complain about sound quality.
i will probably also get a UAG case for weekends, but for now, i'm more concerned on more rugged cases.

Otterbox Armor gets my vote, it's a beast of a case. I've had the Griffin survivor and trident Kraken. Both great cases, but the trident case the plastic eventually broke on a drop, and the kickstand rattled like crazy. The Griffin survivor was a great case, but i got tired of opening a flap to take pictures.
As far as the Defender case it never impressed me and it's not dust proof.
In the end no case can protect your phone from every single drop. It comes down to luck.
Sent from Under water
Do you have problems with the sound quality with the armor? And how does the survivor compare to the defender? Since they use the same technology. The silicone looks a little beefier on the survivor.
Sent from my Motorola RAZR MAXX using Tapatalk 2
Sound quality for me is good enough for me, you can tell a difference but i either got use to it or it went away.
The survivor and defender are no where near the same imo. The survivor's exterior has a lot more grip to it. And as i said before the defender is not dust/dirt proof, the survivor is.
The survivor is also water resistant, meaning it could take a light rain, but not a submerging.
My armor case saved my phone from a 1 story drop onto rocks, I've taken it swimming multiple times. Also it has to be the easiest case to take on and off when needed.
But every drop is different, the only thing a case will do is provide a extra barrier. If dropped just at the right angle anything can break.
People put a lot of false hope in cases and then try to blame the manufacturer when the phone breaks.
Sent from Under water
none of the above. If i needed serious drop protection again, i would go with bodyglove toughsuit case. even the slimmer version has great protection, called the shocksuit. Ive had them both
Armor case for me as well.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
any experience with the other cases mentioned? or is the armor the only one you've tried? comparisons would be nice.
I have had the defender, commuter, ballistic SG MAXX, and Lifeproof as of now. Ballistic and defender did their job well but did not care for the silicone stretching. Commuter works well considering. Lifeproof has been great this far. No major tumbles so I cannot vouch for how well it stands up to concrete or asphalt in major drops but it is waterproof and sound quality is good.

Ballistic SG and Seidio Dilex, Neo Hybrid

I purchased the Seidio and Ballistic cases and they finally came in the mail. I'm probably done with buying cases as I think I've settled on the one I want to use most often. The others I might keep for occasional use or eventually sell the phone off and bundle it.
Along with the neo hybrid I first bought here's a mini review .
Ballistic SG vs Seidio vs Neo Hybrid.
Ballistiic SG
pros- Build quality is top notch. Ports are well accessible. Can take punishment
Cons- bulky
Seidio Dilex
Pros- decent built quality for moderate use. Kick stand is a plus. easy installation. Looks (subjective)
Cons- the polymer or rubber insert that you put the phone in first can pull/stretch so it may expose the phone if you're not careful.
Neo Hybrid-
Pros- slick looking. many compliments thinking its part of the phone. Case really hugs the phone
cons- difficult to take case off and on if you like to switch out cases. The back of case is very slippery. Overall case seems to make you want to handle it with care still. Like the Seidio, I believe it can take a few bumps and drops here and there. Can't access ear phone jack
Overall, for my preferences. I prefer the Ballisitc SG. Has a nice solid feel. It is bulky but I feel it can take some abuse and with my 2 kids wanting to occasionally use the phone, I'm pretty confident it'll survive.
Neo Hybrid comes second. I'll use it for a nice night out or to a wedding, etc.
Seidio -I'll use it the least. Probably just to change it up for the sake of it or use the kickstand when I know the kids would want to watch something as we're out and about.
If moderator can post this in the nexus 5 accessories! My bad.
I agree with your review 100%, even though I don't own a Ballistic, but out of the three, overall, I'd pick the Ballistic as well. And the Seidio, I would use that when going on a trip on a plane or something where you can use the kickstand and you or/and your kids can look at it without holding the phone. And the Spigen is the slick version of the three. Very sporty and slim, like a Corvette, compared to the Ballistic which is like a Caddy Escolade, where the Seidio equates to a F150 where you can also use it and abuse it without much thought.
I have the Ballistics case. I love it. The hard screen is a little different and what I would consider the biggest con but you could take it off and use a regular screen protector.
Sounds like you have the Ballistic SG MAXX which offers even more protection with a hard screen overlay. I've got a screen protector (Spigen version) on mine for minimal protection. None of the cases interfere with the screen protector.
Only concern is how hot the phone may get in the summer heat with these cases. The Spigen offers vented grooves in their tpu case so let's see...

Correct, The Hard Plastic is kind of overkill, but it's fine while I what for my Xtreme Guard protector to come in. I've also noticed the hard screen does settle a little nicer over the screen after some use.
Ordered my SG MAXX the other day on amazon. Hopefully it is going to come- I haven't gotten a tracking number. If anyone is trying to buy the SG MAXX, note that it appears Ballistic has renamed their cases- and what is now the "Tough Jacket Maxx" appears to be exactly the same as the sg.
Just want to mention my Ballistic case saved my phone in an accidental drop on the pavement.
Good weather meant less pockets to store my phone and more chances for a drop.
The SG hit the ground and the thick corner bumper took it like a champ. No scratches and no damage to the phone. Makes me wonder regarding my other two cases I picked up cause Ballistic is the only website to show you details in case protection.

[Q] Best case?

I bought the Nexus 5 and it's amazing. I've already got a screen protector but now I'm still looking for the right case. My first choice was the official bumper case but that isn't an option anymore because it isn't only unavailable at the moment, but most of the people also say it starts to peel off very quickly. So I kept looking for a case that could satisfy my needs. I want to have a good-looking case that delivers the protection the N5 needs, but doesn't add too much bulk so it wouldn't look like some kind of dragon. I also want to mention that I'm not looking for any kind of flip cover because a phone is a phone and not a book.
So after some research I've come down to 2 cases that both give a good impression. Spigen Case Slim Armor and Spigen Case Neo Hybrid. They both have a fairly good reputation so I really can't decide which one to get. I also don't really know the difference. I guess they are the same in thickness. The Slim Armor one probably has better protection and from what I've read isn't as slippery as the Neo Hybrid one, but that case probably also has nice features.
Which one should I get? Or are there better cases available? Thanks in advance!

I have bought like a whole load of cases and found that my favorite case is a simple TPU case like Distronic's cases (I like the black one, the white/clear/frosted design gets discolored over time) they don't make the phone overly bulky, provide pretty good drop protection and are pretty cheap. I have owned Spigen's slim armor and the slim armor with the flip cover and while they are great cases they made the phone a little more chunky than I liked.

It adds fairly good protection but less bulk than most cases(not counting hard shells). Buttons are easy to press and it looks and feels good. It's cheap too!
I've also had spigen neo hybrid but found it too bulky and slippery. Buttons and looks were nice tho.
Btw clear diztronic is out of stock and they dont sell it anymore.
I'd stay away from hard cases such as the ringke slim or spigen hard crystal shell as they scratched up my phone
+1 for soft
Go with the slim armor. One of the best cases I've had, and I've had A LOT of cases. Its a lot more comfortable to hold over the neo hybrid.

My favorite case by far is the Magpul Field. https://store.magpul.com/product/MAG474/cases
Magpul looks awesome dude. Not those clear backs. My ringke got scratched up real bad. Neo hybrid looks decent, in fact I'm getting it. Considering a diztronic as well. I-blason is decent too.
I haven't got the specific Spigen cases you're interested in but I do have the Spigen ultra fit and ultra hybrid. I have been using both cases for the past year (the ultra fit mostly because it doesn't add as much bulk as the ultra hybrid) and both are very good cases that I like. However, I recently ordered the Diztronic case and I'm waiting for it to arrive. The reason is I recently used my previous phone with a Diztronic case and it reminded me that I generally prefer good quality TPU cases more. So I decided I may as well get a Diztronic case for my Nexus 5. As you may see, I agree with the others in recommending the Diztronic case.
I have the Spigen Case Slim Armor, a Tech21 case, and a TPU case, I prefer the Tech21, as a matter of fact I dropped my phone just the other day, and it landed flat on it's back, I thought for sure the screen would be shattered, but nope, all is well.
The Tech21 seems to have more of an "Air cushion" between the case and back of the phone.

Well, I have a pretty cheap one at the moment, this one (it's indeed not a very pretty one). The case barely adds any bulk but it doesn't give the safest feeling. I'm protected for any scratches but I don't think these kind of cases absorb impact very well, so I'll probably still go for something chunkier but then I'll at least know I'm pretty safe.

From what I've read the Neo Hybrid is a bit overrated and doesn't feel very good in the hand. So yeah, I'll probably get the Slim Armor one.

These cases are probably really well-made but I don't think they protect that good if you compare it to the bulkier cases, definitely not against drops.

I thought the Spigen Slim Armor also has these air cushions?
I felt like that too until this convinced me that a TPU case is good enough.

The Cruzerlite cases are pretty similar to the Diztronic ones.

Bugdroid by Cruzerlite

I love them too. Very good feel in hand. I don't know it until I bought one. I know the Official one now unavailable but still we have a lots high quality one in eBay. Not OEM, but still very good (even similar if you ask me)
I'm using spigen case
i get it for free from Nexus gift pack
It's nice, and it feels like the original back of nexus
Had both the Neo Hybrid and the Slim Armor and prefer the Neo Hybrid.
I found that in comparison to the Neo Hybrid, the Slim Armor added too much bulk to the phone. The back of the NH feels better (rubber, a bit like the original back of the phone) while the back of the SA is more slippery (metal). The buttons on the SA required too much force to press and you don't really feel any feedback while pressing.
The only reason I would choose the SA over the NH is for the extra protection, but for me the NH offers more than enough protection (dropped it a few of times indoor and outdoor, only some minor scruffs on the corners of the case).
Didn't Spigen used to sell just the outer band for the neo hybrid? That way you can have a few different colors if you like
