How to get YouTube to rotate to landscape. - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi folks. Finally got my new 2013 Nexus 7.
One problem I'm facing is when I have rotation locked to portrait, and use the YouTube app, whenever I full screen it, it scales to a portrait version.
I normally watch videos in bed and lay on my side, with the device held in portrait mode. When YouTube does that, things are messed up.
I hope you know what I mean.
How do I get it to automatically display full screen using all pixels when I have orientation locked?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

I don't think it's possible. You need to turn on rotation if you want to watch YouTube videos in full screen. If you are in bed, turn on rotation, then rotate your device and lock it again.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it seems really annoying to have to resort to this. While it works, its cumbersome.
They should have an option to toggle landscape mode while orientation locked, like most media players.

I don't think that's how it supposed to work. Same with my iPad.

There is an app for that: GMD Smart Rotate

Screen rotation issues

My HTC Desire suddenly decided to stop allowing me to rotate the screen to landscape from portrait earlier. Really annoying as it means I now have to use the portrait keyboard rather than the landscape one and have to view all webpages/videos in portrait too..
However apps that rely on the accelerometer such as Teeter work perfectly.
So is this a hardware or software problem?
Thanks for your help
This may be a very simple problem to solve cos I've experienced the same thing. Dont forget that the desire only rotates Anti-clockwise, so the buttons are on the right.

Have you checked that the orientation setting is checked in Menu->Settings->Sound & Display?

[Q] Dim soft buttons during video?

Hi
I've tried with MX Player and Moboplayer but both will keep soft buttons illuminated when a video is playing in a dark room.
Any way to fix this as the apps settings don't affect it.
The buttons aren't illuminated if the room is bright so it's a One X light sensor issue I think.

afaik there is not a native option/solution to this, however, i used to use a 3rd party app called 'Screen filter' in my Desire in the past. It has this option along with adjustable dim for screen (perfect for watching film in the dark) but "enable/disable soft-keys backlight" option is not functioning with OneX. Hope the developer updates it to let it work with OneX.
For e-reading at night this is also an issue...

I'be been looking for a solution for this as well. FBReader has a setting to turn the buttons off, but it doesn't seem to work on the HOX...

Found a fix! Requires root, works great on my AT&T HOX...
search Play for 'Keyboard backlight controller' or copy/paste: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deskangel.kblight&hl=en

4.2 camera rotation lag

Does anyone else have lag when rotating the new camera in 4.2? Its really annoying and it seems ridiculous that google would release it like this.

They only had to rotate 2 little icons... can't understand why they had to apply fullscreen rotation to camera.

Exactly, i thought it was just a bug when i tried the 4.2 apk. I just figured it was due to it being for the nexus 4, i was pissed when i saw that it carried over to the official release.
Please star this issue in to get it recognized by Google:

Android Dev about this:
"Unfortunately this is working correctly. The new app has to let the system rotate so that when you swipe over to view recently taken pictures the status bar, action bar, and navigation bar are in the correct orientation. Otherwise you have the bad transition into/out of camera that was in 4.1. We will try to make it faster and more responsive, certainly, but currently this is a "lesser of two evils" sort of thing."

Well lets hope the magic google devs make the animation faster without seeing laggy animation.
This is extremely boneheaded and annoying. The stock Samsung camera -- and every other intelligently coded camera -- only rotates the HUD, not the damn preview image.
Just. Plain. Stupid.
Maybe the new boss of Android will realize this...
Yeah, its the first thing i noticed.
Can i just flash the camera apk from JB 4.1 on 4.2.2?
I turned off auto rotation and it fixes the laggy camera rotation problem. But if you want to view your photo in landscape you have to turn the Auto Rotation back on. I dont use my phone in landscape very often, if at all. So leaving the auto rotation off hasnt been a big deal for me. If there was a way to just turn the rotation off in the camera only, that would be nice.
Glad I'm not the only one noticing this.

This is stupid, how the hell can you take landscape photos?

I always have auto-rotation off.
I can confirm 100% that the camera still takes landscape photos, as it still senses which way is down. But you don't get the rotation animation which slows the app.
The worst thing is that it doesn't need to lag that badly. The nexus 4 is quite quick in rotating the camera app. Thought it is just raw procwssor power at first, but my nexus 10 also is slow as hell in that category. Well, guess we will have to hope that key lime pie will not end in the 4.2 fiasco...

nexus 7 rotates pretty damn quick even though it's just the front camera. that's odd the N10 is slow.

[Q] Portrait or Landscape

Do you tend to hold your Nexus in portrait orientation or landscape?

Seriously, who uses it in landscape, except for video. That's just weird.
Agreed. I use portrait if I'm watching something or in rare occasions want to read something in landscape. It's too hard to type in landscape.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I use mine mostly for watching videos and surfing the net so it's always in landscape mode.
Interesting. I came from a 10 inch tab that was setup for landscape. I grew accustomed to it and carried it over to the Nexus. Now holding it in portrait seems weird. .
Landscape ... Potrait us way too wierd.....

custom wallpaper movies

I like the MIUI wallpaper movie feature but would prefer the option of using custom movies. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything online, so in case anyone else is wondering.....
/sdcard/MIUI/.videowallpaper/
Copy and paste your homemade vids in there and then enable via the themes app. I was concerned the 4k vid might not work or even cause an issue like the sRGB one mentioned earlier, but I spun the wheel and I'm still here. Also, I'm on A9 MIUI 10 so there's a good chance it works on newer firmwares as well.
Thank you so much man! You're a real legend [emoji123][emoji108]!....I am using Seán Doran's The Pearl 4k here.

@wang1chung Themes app stops abruptly upon applying the video wallpaper now. Previously so far it was working perfectly. How to resolve?

I've noticed it's a little glitchy, specifically if you try to have one vid for the lock screen and another for the home screen. The resolution gets stretched instead of cropped.
What did you change since it worked? Does it crash with all vids, even the stock ones? Maybe try clearing the app data and starting again. Are you on A9? I'm using themes app v1.5.09

So I was able to successfully two different videos as my lock and home screens respectively (I edited the Lunasa 4k video which was originally in 1080x1080, into 2340x1080 i.e. my current screen resolution) but the problem with the lock screen one is that it restarts with every screen wake-up which is kinda annoying. I wished it would keep running in the background when the screen's turned off. That'd be what I want.
As for the Themes app version, it's v1.6.0.6. I'm on A10, MIUI 11.0.4. Global.

The video restart issue makes sense for battery saving but if you don't mind that, I wonder if it the AOD mod might help?
I think the resolution changes might be causing issues as the ones available through the themes app are 1080x1920.

How do I execute the AOD Mod and where to get it? I have the AOD Pro v4.4.8 btw but that's not the one u referring to here, right? Please help me run the video in b/g.
Nah, my screen resolution is 1080x2340 so 90% of themes (if not all) are optimized for this resolution only as the wallpapers fit perfectly on my screen top to bottom.

I remembered having a weird issue when I enabled ambient displays "always on mode" along with the lock screen movie. I thought it was what you were asking for but I just re-did it to confirm and it's not. The lock screen video is resuming where it last was right before it powered off. You said you didn't like it restarting, how about pausing?

Yea, my current lock and home screen video (which is the same) are already pausing when I turn off screen (and AOD turns on or even when it's off) and resuming from there when I come to home screen or lock screen which is perfectly fine as it should be and that's what I want actually. I don't want a single second of this beautiful ISS video to be gone during screen off. Although, the problem arises, somehow, when I try to select different videos for each of the screens. Then the lock screen one restarts and the home screen keeps pausing and resuming as it should. I'll try again once more else I'll keep this already-perfect single video aka "The Pearl 4k" by Seán Doran. [emoji847]
