4.2 camera rotation lag - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone else have lag when rotating the new camera in 4.2? Its really annoying and it seems ridiculous that google would release it like this.

They only had to rotate 2 little icons... can't understand why they had to apply fullscreen rotation to camera.

Exactly, i thought it was just a bug when i tried the 4.2 apk. I just figured it was due to it being for the nexus 4, i was pissed when i saw that it carried over to the official release.

Android Dev about this:
"Unfortunately this is working correctly. The new app has to let the system rotate so that when you swipe over to view recently taken pictures the status bar, action bar, and navigation bar are in the correct orientation. Otherwise you have the bad transition into/out of camera that was in 4.1. We will try to make it faster and more responsive, certainly, but currently this is a "lesser of two evils" sort of thing."

Well lets hope the magic google devs make the animation faster without seeing laggy animation.

This is extremely boneheaded and annoying. The stock Samsung camera -- and every other intelligently coded camera -- only rotates the HUD, not the damn preview image.
Just. Plain. Stupid.
Maybe the new boss of Android will realize this...

Yeah, its the first thing i noticed.
Can i just flash the camera apk from JB 4.1 on 4.2.2?

I turned off auto rotation and it fixes the laggy camera rotation problem. But if you want to view your photo in landscape you have to turn the Auto Rotation back on. I dont use my phone in landscape very often, if at all. So leaving the auto rotation off hasnt been a big deal for me. If there was a way to just turn the rotation off in the camera only, that would be nice.

Glad I'm not the only one noticing this.

This is stupid, how the hell can you take landscape photos?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I always have auto-rotation off.
I can confirm 100% that the camera still takes landscape photos, as it still senses which way is down. But you don't get the rotation animation which slows the app.

The worst thing is that it doesn't need to lag that badly. The nexus 4 is quite quick in rotating the camera app. Thought it is just raw procwssor power at first, but my nexus 10 also is slow as hell in that category. Well, guess we will have to hope that key lime pie will not end in the 4.2 fiasco...

nexus 7 rotates pretty damn quick even though it's just the front camera. that's odd the N10 is slow.

[REQ] N9 lockscreen mod

Hey guys!
I recently sent my Nexus in for repairs, and borrowed a Nokia N9 from a friend to use meanwhile. Now I've got my Nexus back, and there's one thing in particular that I miss about the N9 - the clock and notifications on the locked screen.
If you haven't used or seen an N9 in action, this feature is really, really useful - and something I think could be ported to (at least) the GNex.. See attached images
When the user locks the screen, usually on other phones it just goes plain black. On the N9 however (because of the AMOLED screen) the screen is mainly black but with the clock still visible! It also shows small icons to alert the user of new messages and such. To avoid burn ins, the N9 changes the position of the clock and notification icons randomly. It also uses the proximity sensor to "know" when it's in a pocket, and then turns of the screen completely.
So devs, can this be done?

Well, to be honest it probably would create burn ins if the screen were on 24/7.. But Nokia has (seemingly) thought about this! (And I have failed to mention it in the 1st post )

Well, using the stock clock on ICS, you can set the phone into a very dim low power mode (as you mentioned). I am pretty sure the clock periodically moves around the screen to avoid burning too. It also hides the softkeys. You just need to tap the screen when it's displaying the clock overlay and it'll dim down.
I doubt it'd be viable for carrying around in your pocket due to the fact that your phone is obviously not locked in this state and it hides the notification bar so you don't have any visual feedback for notifications (besides LED flashing?). :/

Yes, the ICS standard alarm clock offers similar functionality.
As I wrote a few posts up, the N9 always displays the clock and notifications when not in a pocket (or when the proximity sensor is not blocked). But, if you take the phone and put it in your pocket it will completely turn off the screen - it would be a waste of battery to do otherwise.
Regarding the notification bar, the N9 also has icons on the lockscreen as any Android has in the notification bar - it's only showing a small SMS bubble under the clock if you have a unread text etc. etc. You wouldn't loose any functionality with a mod like this, only gain moar
Look at the attached pic in the first post to see what I mean

Thinking this needs to be seen again I'd love this so much, and I'll help out if I can.
NoLED is a nice software. It must be updated to hide the soft buttons as I can see now
My only concern is the battery consumption because the Android OS is not going to deep sleep mode if the screen is on which means the phone is always awake
Any ideas
This mod would be sweet. I had an old Nokia n95 and like that the clock was always displayed with the screen off.

that's a feature of noled and the most efficient way to unlock the phone. especially if you have noled show a clock at all times as well as with notifications. did cut my battery life by about 15-20% but with some tweaking of settings i got it down to only 7-10% which was acceptable for the added ease of use.

Force youtube into landscape with orientation lock?

Hey guys,
I like to lock my screen orientation to portrait for mostly everything. Games and landscape apps override this which is fine.
The youtube app for some reason is stuck in portrait (it used to switch easily in CM9 on my old i9000m).
So I have to disable orientation lock for videos.
Is there anyway to force certain apps to disregard the orientation lock? I know CM9 has it, but I'm quite happy with the touchwiz features and don't want to switch.
I also want to know about this. My GS1 does it with orientation locked. Wish I could here too

What is up with 4.2.1 camera?!

This is simply a joke, what is up with the camera app?? It is literally slower then my old nokia brick!
It takes 4(!) seconds for the camera to open when sliding to it from the lockscreen or opening via the icon, and it takes 2 damn seconds to rotate from horizontal to portrait and vice versa, that is insane and I cannot believe Google hadn't fixed this yet. Are you guys furious about it as I am?
P.s I wanna stay stock, and I don't think I'm asking too much..
Edit: one more thing: if my camera is set to auto flash and I will snap a picture without first tapping to focus about 60% of the time I will get a blue tinted photo. If I tap to focus first the photo will come out normal, I think they've made it that way so we'll get faster capturing but what they did was basically making the camera take a picture before it identifies the correct white balance, giving a blueish resault. Basically the whole camera app is broken in my opinion.
I wish they would fix it, its really slow, I don't use it often.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
You have been very slight. It takes at least 4 seconds.
The new camera sucks, not only is it super slow but it takes forever to focus if it focuses at all before taking a picture. And when the shot is taken you dont see the result on the display as in the old camera and one has to go into gallery first to see how the photo turned out.
And this stupid new menu.... It may look fancy but half the time the control is out of the display or covered by the finger. Worst menu ever and should have been done properly or not at all.
In short i hate the new camera.

R: What is up with 4.2.1 camera?!
I really like the new UI but the app it's really bad optimized, it really sucks. It's been a while now since the release of 4.2 and still there's no fix. I, personally, excepted more from Google.
I don't even like the new interface. The pop up menus suck, some of the options are always hidden behind my finger.
Hmm did Google ever revert something like this in the past or do you think they will stick with this crap no matter what?

I actually trusted Google to sort these kind of things pretty quickly as the community is very aware of minor glitches and such, but this camera app is above all glitches, and they're doing nothing..
I also miss the HDR mode in the app. The only reason why I don't change to a different camera app is the integration with the OS.
I have to say I only have one problem with the camera app and that's the ~1 sec freeze when changing orientation.
It does open a tad slow from the lock screen (~3 sec for me) but I think it's bearable. Opening from the icon seems to be about a second. Focus hasn't been an issue for me yet. The new menu can be operated by taps if you don't like having your finger in the way - or - you can just tap and hold to open the menu then slide your finger out past the icons and operate it with your finger out of the way. Finally, not having the little picture preview for the last is a bit annoying but it is far out-shined by being able to swipe to the right and see a large version of that picture (plus previous pictures) while still keeping the camera active and not having to open the gallery app.
Just sharing my opinion - I prefer this version over the previous app.
EDIT: For what it's worth I'm on Purity v4.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108705)
I'm in total agreement! The UI is fine but the length of time it takes to change orientation and even snap a picture is ridiculous.

Hmm... there is a delay when you try and take a picture? I don't see that on mine unless it is still focusing or using the flash, of course.

Tap the circle in the bottom right corner then tap to choose options only works with a finger on the screen? I don't know if my camera apk was modified to do this... it's just the one that came on Purity ROM.
Cant we just pull the 4.1.2 camera and gallery app ?
Or is it that 4.2.1 camera is hardcoded in Android due to photophere?

Sounds like maybe you are a new Android user. It's true, the rotation delay is the same as the delay seen when rotation other apps. This would not seem to be a problem to a new user, but if you were used to the old camera app where there was no delay at all when rotating then it clearly sucks.

Camera Zoom Fx issue

Anyone here use this? I try to snap a pic in landscape and it saves it sideways. I can always rotate it, but I shouldn't have to. Camera ICS saves them correctly.
Using Tiny's CM10.1 rom.
Does the same for me. Cant find any setting to change it. I dont actually use the app anymore, but bought it back at christmas time when they had the sales for 99 cents. Thought the effects were cool.
Just realized that it does work... The wrong way. I turned it volume buttons down and landscape worked the way it should. There doesn't seem to be a reverse landscape option though. I think I'm going to email them and ask about it.

I always hold mine that way to take pictures - and I use Camera Zoom FX a lot, I have no use for the effects but it's one of the few camera apps that handles display rotation correctly. The stock app is the worst, it rotates the whole display and with the glitchy preview it's a nightmare. Camera Zoom FX rotates the buttons and nothing else, much less stressful on my poor Dinc's GPU. It does only work in two positions though, but I never noticed that before and I take a lot of pictures (it's easier than writing stuff down - lol).

I do like the stock camera and the way it's integrated with the gallery, but it just sucks on the Dinc. CZFX is a really good alternative. Camera ICS is nice but I like the look and features of this one more. I emailed them on the 21st. Still haven't gotten a reply. Volume buttons down just feels upside-down to me. lol. Hopefully they'll implement a reverse landscape feature sometime. Until then, I can deal. Just made it my default cam and assigned it to the Search hardware button. I don't use it anyway, so it's nice to have a dedicated camera button. I use QuickPic as a gallery, so I deleted the Gallery2 apk. Freed up some system space. Default gallery seems to take forever to refresh after I move pics around with a file manager (even after hitting refresh).
