[Q] Suggestions for modem? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I live in the Baltimore, MD area and I'm using Boost Mobile. I'm running JellyBAM android 4.2.2 currently, and plan to switch to CM11 if/when data is working.
Any suggestions for best modem for 3g speed/reception?

Just try different ones... make sure they are ICS modem's though or you won't have data.
Remember... just because we all have the same device... doesn't mean that they run the same. So what works best for you might not work best for another..
Good luck.

I've heard this before, and it doesn't make much sense. Yes, location matters, but two of the same phone in the same location will likely produce negligible differences in reception when using the same modem.

You sound upset... that wasn't my intention buddy. But I can tell you that I have had two epic's and my first one hated JB modem's and my current one gets great signal on JB modem's... and yes it's the same area and no new towers.
Maybe it was the difference in ICS and JB, I'm not sure.
But fl24 is the newest ICS modem and that's what I get the best signal with when I'm running any cm/aosp/aokp based roms... and I've tried quite a few different modems. That was in the Chicago area and Springfield area... both in Illinois.
Also... this current epic runs aokp roms great.. where my first one wouldn't... all chips are not created equal or maybe I just didn't now what I was doing then...
Hope somebody in youre area jumps in with some info for you. Good luck..

No, not upset. My apologies if I came off that way. I work with radios on embedded devices and my experience has been that they all perform within <1% difference of each other when running the same software. Now, it's quite possible to have bad chips, but then all sorts of things go wrong and no amount of software can adequately compensate.
My guess is that ICS vs JB did make the difference for you. And as for AOKP roms running better, maybe it was a different version of the ROM?
Thanks for the input about FL24. I'll try it out.

I have two Epic 4G Touchs in my possession
One of them I can't even get data working on Any AOSP ROMS even though I was using ICS and GB modems.
I now use it as a media device so it doesn't really matter.
My daily driver is the complete opposite.
I get the best reception using FC14 modem.
Unless someone lives in your area with the same phone, they can tell you which modem works best for said area.

[Q] Question Regarding Signal on AOSP vs Sense

Maybe this is all in my head so I need a confirmation. Do Sense ROMs have better signal strength/data speeds? It doesn't make sense to me but I just seem to have much better reception and speeds when using a Sense based ROM, including EVO framework ones as opposed to CM and Ruby. Is there ay reason for this or am I just imagining it?
I've often wondered the same thing.
I think, however, that actual reception is tied to the PRL, the radio, the PRI, and some more uber-technical stuff - in other words, things well under the hood that aren't impacted/changed when a ROM is flashed.
That said, I suspect ROMs play differently with those things depending on how they are built, hence what appears (or may actually be) better signal.
It all comes down to the RIL and radio. A rom won't mess with those. They should be identical. Check the signal dBm's to compare roms.

I figured it would be a radio thing but it always seemed it was changing from ROM to ROM. That being said, I switched from a Sense ROM to an AOSP one and the signal has not changed at all so thanks guys for answering the question. I knew it had to be in my head hehe

One thing you DO have control over is the firmware of the radio. There are currently 3 versions of radio firmware that you can flash. This has nothing to do with the ROM. Different people have different results in terms of link stability and speed depending on them. Look for the Radio thread to find the downloads and information.
I've actually had this issue on the EVO and can confirm after testing that the signal strength is less with an AOSP ROM (every one I've tried actually). Drives me crazy because I really want to use one.

How exactly did you test this? There are many variables that could influence signal.

[Q] Update to fix 4g drops?

Wow, this phone has issues or do i just have bad luck? Im on my 2nd replacement from verizon.... all the phones they sent me had really terrible purple tints on the screen as well as constant 4g drops. The reason im trying to replace my first phone is because it drops 4g as well. I spoke with tier 2 support today and he said that there will be an update to fix this issue. Im having difficulty believing this because each GNex is running on the same exact software and only some of the phones are having this issue. If it was truly a software issue wouldnt it be much more widespread? I dont quite understand this. Does any1 here have a Gnex that has functional 4g? Do I have the ****tiest luck or something? Does any1 actually believe that this update will fix the 4g issue?
Take things into your own hand and flash a ROM on Android 4.0.4 (the update that operator was talking about).

I am running Liquidsmooth and have 4.0.4 radios and still have the constant 4g drops. Trust me.. i've flashed many roms to no avail. Im assuming the update they are rolling out is different from the standard 4.0.4 AOSP.

ASOP, AKOP, CM10 and wimax

I would like to have to have just a normal Jelly Bean 4.1 or know 4.2.1 experience of my phone. I tried out the Pacman rom and CM10 rom. Both have the same issue. My 4g wimax speeds go from 10megs to 750kbps.
Is there something that I missing or is everyone just fine with horrible speeds? I even tried the temp boot and updated my PRL and such.
Is there anyone running a stock android 4.1 or 4.2.1 with 10 meg wimax speeds? or does this not exists.
currently im running TW jelly bean FL16 rom....perfect wimax. so its not JB.
~also which I found annoying was this was the same issue on my piece of crap evo3d. wimax would go from 10megs down to 750kbps on every ASOP, AKOP, CM9 and up.

Some have said that its because there is no kernel source for JB. So aosp roms don't have kernel source for the kernels they use.

So when the developer of the roms say 4g is working, its actually not?

No. It is working.
Tbh I never fully trust speedtest.net servers. For example.. I have 2 servers in columbus, oh and 1 in radnor,oh near me. Columbus servers are 50 miles closer to me than radnor ones. Still I always get 2-3 times faster results on radnor servers.
So in reality I have a faster throughput but I am misled by server caps. Now i know this is not the case because obviously on a tw rom you get much faster results.
What I am trying to say here is that when I am on 4g on non tw roms, 4g is much faster than 3g even though speedtests tells another story for me. 4g and 3g speedtests give me similar results. I also get faster tranafer rates when downloading files when on 4g.
So my guess always has been that on non tw jb roms, speedtests are not measured correctly.

i live in downtown Cincinnati with perfect 4g signal. Speedtest is one way to check. Another is by trying to download things.it took a couple mins to download speedtest. I mean its like being on 56k modem or something. So no 4g is not working correctly. it might be working, but at 1/12 of the speed its suppose to.
The source for aosp kernel was made from ics kernel source which apparently has a buggy 4g problem... That's why custom kernels also have throttled 4g. Hopefully after jb source drops somebody will make another kernel with the new source...

It's an issue with source built kernels. Nobody really knows why it happens hut it is what it is. Repacked kernels are where it is if you want 4g speeds to not be absymal.

[Q] radios, whats the difference? confused!!!

Hey guys, i need some help. I flash ROMs all the time
But i have to admit. I don't understand what makes one radio
For tmobile different than the other. They are all software
Based and not a hardware change. So could someone explain
It to me like a i am two years old. In other words make it simple.
O and one more thing. Can we flash the telus radio if we use
Tmobile? Thanks in advance...
Some radios are better in certain areas for different people. I don't think are that different at all except some seem to have better signal, data, wifi, etc. ULVE1 is great on the east coast but not so much in the west. The latest UVLI4 works great and gives good speed and some say kills call echo too. It is all your location basically they just have multiple radios for phones because they usually get updates every few months like gb to ics to jb and so on. Occasionally though they do implement a fix or two into a new radio not all the time though.

[Q] Same carrier, two different phones, difference reception

I have my Galaxy S3 and my coworker has an HTC Evo. Both of us have Sprint and yet his phone gets 3 bars of reception whereas mine only gets 1, 2 if I'm very, very lucky.
AFAIK, he's running stock, unrooted and I'm running rooted with latest LiquidSmooth 2.9 with the MD4 modem. No idea what modem he has.
What could be the reason why he's getting better reception? Better antenna build in the Evo?

Some of it has to do with the rom. Some aosp roms show a more accurate bar reading...which is why your's is fewer. I wouldn't really get to worked up over it. They both probably get similar reception and data speeds on 3g

Actually, my data is absolute sh!te and it's a pain to load nearly anything. I get data transfer speeds in the very low kbps.

I'm going to agree Ivpre. I would not get worked up over it. Unless of course it is necessary for you to have more Bars showing then him :silly: . You do most likely get the same Data Speeds.

I would suggest Updating PRL / Profile. Maybe even trying a different Modem. Not everyone gets great reception on MD4. You may have to experiment to see which works better for you.
If you want to properly know if your device is getting less of a signal you need to flash a TW rom, preferably one which is close to stock update prl and profile. Then check your signal and data speeds compared to your friends. AOSP roms remember are built from leaks, and ported from other devices. There is no true aosp source for the Sprint S3. So there's lots of patches and coding which goes into getting the cdma radios working.

We've actually done a Speedtest together and his had a higher data rate than mine. I've had different modem with the earlier builds of Liquid Smooth as well, but still low reception. I've also updated my PRL/Profile in the past in hopes that it'll help but sadly no.
I'll look into having a TouchWiz ROM versus this one. I just love how LiquidSmooth is, so hoping I can find a TW ROM that's just as fun.
EDIT: I don't even know how to find a TouchWiz ROM. I figured it would say "TW" along the subject line, the same way AOSP does, but alas I cannot find that. I have heard of Goodness, is that a TW ROM?

Most likely cause all the roms which do not say AOSP or CM or AOKP or something like that are TW roms. I would recommend MOAR or TPR The People's Rom.

OP,
Unless you're being very careful with your comparisons and using quantitative, and not qualitative, data like db, seeing more "signal bars" means nothing.
Sent from my buttered S3
You must also keep in mind, that even after you switch to a TW Rom. There is no guarantee that you will see better reception. IE more bars. There are quite a few variables involved. What you should concentrate on is making your device the best it can be for you. As CNexus stated. When comparing you have to compare Apples to Apples, and Oranges to Oranges.
