Unofficial or nightly - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What is the difference between unofficial and nightly version of roms?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

The unofficial builds you see are being built by developers using code available (whether AOSP, CM, etc). Nightlies are daily (for the most part) builds pushed out by developers (a popular one being CM) which implement the latest changes, yet are to be considered unstable and have bugs within them. That's my understanding...hope it's right/answers your question.

[ Q] Difference between CM9 Experimental and CM9 Nightly Kang?

I recently upgraded my Captivate to GN and have been enjoying Codeworx' rom since day one. Just wondering what the difference is between that and the nightly kang release? They both claim to represent the current state so is it just a matter of cherry pics in kang that don't make it into the codeworkx "unofficial official" version?

Didn't know codeworkx was working on the CM9 for Gnex or are someone confused?
/edit: Yup someone is confused... Namely... Me :-D

i think codeworkx releases in his build what he sees it needs testing, and for a more accurate user testing/feedback, he leaves most of the stuff out. if you follow his thread, you'll see how it's been.
the other kangs around, are either building on top cm9 ics branch using it as a base, or straight cherry-picking from github/gerrit, acting more as previews of upcoming features.
these builds are tagged experimental, even nightlies are experimental, and its users cannot report bugs to cm bug tracker.

Difference between CM9 RC1 and CM9 Nightly builds?

While they are both official release .

RC is a point in time where they froze the code and made a ROM from that. RC builds they accept bug reports from.
Nightlies is a daily built ROM with all changes the cyanogenmod team have done in the repo. Changes done on nightly build can break the ROM, so you use that at your own risk. It is also the reason they don't accept bug reports on nightly builds since one can accept things to not work when trying new code.
Swiftkey'ed on my CM9 Galaxy Nexus
I've been flashing roms for maybe 6 months now, from galaxy s 2 to gnote, HTC eco 4g lte, flashed many many unnoficial CM9 roms.
Now I got the gnexus for about 2 days and am ready for root and flash .
Do you recommend the official CM9 RC1? As opposed to nightly builds?
I wanna just flash and chill until 4.1 becomes flawless.

It's like asking: What's the difference between an old nightly and the newest nightly?

Well, the RC is a stable code so there will be less bugs then with a nightly. But then again you won't get the bleeding edge that Nightlies provide.
So go with nightly if you wanna test the new things, and stick to RC if you find Nightlies a little buggy.

Cm9 RC 1 is old
Nightly is newer.
Cm team just gets tired of people *****ing about stable releases so they just call one of the nightlies as an RC. All the code freeze stuff doesn't matter.
Stability is exactly the same, there is no such thing as RC1 being truly stable.

Guess ill just test both and see which I'd like more. I ran some benchmarks on the stock and it craps out at 2200, while I'm used to seeing 50+ with previous devices.
Super lag even just scrolling screens from left to right.

CM9 nightlies are stable..
RC is just the 'official' tag to it.
treat it as open beta and close beta or alpha.

I wouldn't go as far as saying stability is exactly the same, but I do agree with RC's not being truly stable. Using an RC puts less risk on the user because in the nightlies they are constantly tweaking code and they could break something that was previously functional with all the changes they make. If you look at it like this, you would probably also say that an RC is more stable than a nightly.

Which is the most stable jb rom?

I think cyon has the best rom right now? Whats your opinion?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
In reality the most stable as our device goes is the official test JB ROM. Its probably the most true to what the device should be (according to Samsung)... When building on the AOSP source and trying to merge changes to the code base it usually can break things... in this case that is quite a regular occurrence.
Almost all the AOSP ROM's are based on CyanogenMod code... that tells me something. I skip straight to the source I use CM 10 and flash the nightlies whenever they come out.

Whitehawkx AOKP ROM. The latest build. You can find it in the original development section. I have no problems what so ever.

[4/13/13][ROM][4.2.2]AOKP Unofficial Nightlies for Toro

AOKP JB-MR1 Unofficial Nightlies for the Toro
What is it?
A pure, untampered with AOKP Nightly based on Google's Android OS 4.2.2 direct from source, compiled by myself and uploaded for your pleasure.
Unless noted otherwise, these are straight merged nightlies from AOKP's github.
What's the difference between a nightly, a milestone, and a PUB release?
A nightly is only the officially merged changes to AOKP, added whenever it passes review codes and tests, as the changes come. A Milestone release is whenever there are enough significant changes to the ROM to where the AOKP team decides it is time to officially publish it and showcase it, and a PUB (Project Unicorn Butter) release is from a member of Team AOKP that adds different changes that haven't officially been merged yet. While most of the time these changes are considered stable, they have not been officially checked off yet.
Why?
Why not? I started compiling them for myself and decided to share with whomever also wanted the latest and greatest, free of buzz words and hype.
NOTICE!
For anyone that uses their phone in spanish it is a reported bug about force closes. If you are experiencing this, you will need to factory reset, setup the phone in english, then change the language used to spanish. I apologize, this is nothing particular to my build, but to AOKP in general for the time being. Thanks for your patience!
Changelog
Can be found Here and the current list of cherry picks is as follows:
Chronus built in as system app, updated direct from CM source
Features chronus preferences in rom control--->clock--->clock widget

AOKP TORO 3/22/13
AOKP TORO 3/24/13
AOKP TORO 4/12/13
AOKP TORO 4/13/13
These nightlies will ONLY work on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (TORO), flashing these will require a custom recovery, for your sake I hope you are on the latest either CWM or TWRP2. If not on the latest recovery you will receive the 0/0/0/0 folder error
The gapps package I recommend using can be found at this link, gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
The usual disclaimers and everything else still apply, so if you install this on a non toro phone, please don't blame me.
gapps flashing is still required, and I recommend nexus louder beta.
Credits
Team AOKP, in particular Pro Tekk for his amazing guide on compiling at RootzWiki
Dizzy Thermal, for supporting my crack flashing habit for quite some time
HTC and Sprint, for taking such a long time to put gingerbread on my Evo 4G and pushing me to root
Myn, for his amazing Evo ROMs, showing me how beautiful a custom ROM could be
The CM Team for Chronus
If you're enjoying the nightlies feel free to comment, ask a question, or hit the thanks button!
Thanks.

Have to go back to work. Built one more for the 15th but swiping up for Google now causes system ui force closes. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until I left the house and won't be back for 2 weeks. I will build again when I get home. Sorry for the inconveniences...

[Q] Do you use nightly or stable versions for daily usage?

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if you prefer to use nightly versions with added features or fixes, but with risk of bugs , or use older stable versions?
So I decided to make a poll to see what users prefer to use for daily use on their htc vision
My G2 is running the Andromadus builds.
Well havent seen nightlys for the vision since cm7, but if there were nightlies I wouldn't be apposed to using them.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
You are wrong: a newer version has (most of the time) less bugs.
