battery problems - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

My girlfriend has a GS3 love the phone but it has a serious battery drain. It doesn't matter if its a stock or custom rom. It is running stock 4.3 right now and the battery has gone from 100 to 83 in 3 hours. with 30 min screen time. I thought it was the battery so i got another Samsung battery and its not ant better. I tried to search but it seem the search funtion is not working because it gives me nothing no matter what I search for. Any sugestions would be great.

try a different charger or port
2nd updating from 4.3 from 4.1.2 has a big change to the phone how it works etc and by that the phone takes time to adjust to 4.3 thus getting bad battery drains, a week or two or a month and the battery will be as good as ever

Get battery saver or juice defender this are two apps I have used to monitor my battery usage and they recommend to charge the phone to 100% and that will change as to how fast your battery dies
Letting the phone die and charging results to bad battery life while recharging phone at a timely manner increases battery life
Also note that GPS/WiFi/data/screen drains battery like crazy so fix those and you will notice a big difference

battery isue with JB

strange thing is going on. my battery dropped form 50 to 17 %, than from 30 to 9% ect. before that i took out battery because i wanted to see something.
after that. battery life is getting worse. usually i could get about 4-4.5 hours of screen time. but now only 2-3 hours.
what is going on with my battery
Check your apps and install BetterBatterStats. It could be rogue apps not letting the phone go to sleep or making it work more than it should.

I am having similar issues (Jellybean Vicious Jellybean4.1.1 AOSP, faux kernal). I can literally see the battery percentage go down a percent every 30 seconds or so when i am using my phone / surfing web / streaming music.
Cant post in the main forum now - any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is often the kernal with the new JB roms. In an older build of Franco's kernal if you opened the camera when you first started the phone it would fix battery drain. I suggest a new kernal! (Franco's runs great on mine! ). If this doesn't work you might want to recalibrate your battery. This app works great, search "batterycalibration" on the play store. It will delete your battery data so your phone will charge to an actual 100%. Hope this helps!

There is so much wrong about this post its not even funny.
All kernels are pretty much equal. It all depends on how you tune it. You cannot calibrate your battery... all that does is delete battery stats. Which again DOES NOTHING.

My N7 running JB gets great battery life, but the GNex on JB is crap when it comes to battery. I'm often out of battery by 3-4pm in the afternoon.

The GNex has a 1850 mAh battery while the N7 has a 4326 giant mAh battery. That's more than twice the juice. What did you expect?

I've experienced crap battery since moving moving to JB as well. Same kernel and I can only manage 3.5 hours of display over like 8 hours. On Wi-Fi. Whereas on ICS same kernel as JB I was getting 5 hours. Its not just this guy.

I picked up a spare battery over the weekend (identical 1750mAh Samsung batteries), and today I ran the first one from 100% down to below 30%, and swapped. When I arrived home, I popped in the first one to charge it, only to find it is at 58%. I guess the principle is to not pay too much attention to the exact number, and to keep all my batteries as highly charged as possible...
I don't seem to have any rogue apps. The phone appears to sleep very well when I'm not actively using it.

If your battery randomly drops when you reboot your phone do this :
Let it die completely until it turns off, keep it turned off and then charge it completely (usually overnight ) and then turn it back on and it'll show you a very accurate battery percentage

Optimus G Pro E980 Battery

hi. i just got my new phone E980. its the AT&T model. the batter is so ambiguous man... like i got the phone just yesterday, started checking out the phone and the battery was like 23%.
after LITERALLY like 10 mins the battery went to like 12%... i was like WOOOOT.....
i discharged the phone completely and then took out the battery and discharged any remaining power from phone as its recommended.
then i charged the phone to full and started using again like paystore apps downloading.
as i checked the battery from setting the idle was using like 3rd most battery in the list after screen and android OS.
what is this man??? isnt it supposed to be a phablet? is it ok for my phone to be this worst at battery. this is first ever non-Samsung phone and i m used to good battery life where idle does not take freaking 3rd most of the battery... WTF... im kinda disappointed
also can someone tell me and pls like me here any good roms and how to root this phone and also tell me which roms provide good battery life?
i will be so thankful for these links...
smiler what happened to me :\
now i need to wait for new battery to arrive
EDIT:
small tip
its might help the sudden restarting if changing the processor speed to 1ghz max
I've solve the same Issue by using an Ipad Charger because the 3140Mah battery need a 2 Ampere charger.
First day my F240L drain full battery in 3 hours, the 100% charge was fake by charging with Galaxy S3 charger (I got Phone Used without Charger), the phone show 100% charge but the value was fake.
Try a charger with 2 Ampere Output.
This metod is working with ipad charger and Galaxy Tab 3 charger.
I hope that my Hint work for you.
Now my battery works very well. yesterday i disconnect phone at 8.30 am and at the 23.30 the charge was 47%, with mid-heavy use and wifi turned on all the day.
Plus 1!

Sorry that's all I got but you will see in the first screen shot during the 3 days the phone was powered on and off charge, the screen used 35% of the battery. I have had 2 previous phones, TMO GS2 and ATT Note1 and never had the battery last longer than around 24-26 hours on any ROM under similar circumstances. That is with notifications enabled and data and Wifi active but Bluetooth off.
2nd screenshot shows phone was sleeping (offline) 95% of the time so if my calculation is correct, on screen time would calculate out at 4394 minutes * (100-95.4) % = 202 minutes or around 3.3 hours during the 3 days I was using it (little more than 1 hour a day). Assuming the screen was on whenever the phone was online.
You just need to press Screen to see screen time

[Q] Rapid Battery Loss & Rebooting Restores Battery?

So, my battery is wack... and I think it's only been acting like this since I went to a KK ROM? Maybe? Feels like it...
I've had this tablet since it was released last fall, and this behavior is very recent.
Anyways, it dies FAST. Like nose dives in a matter of 5-15 minutes. What's even weirder, is that sometimes, if I power cycle the device, it'll jump up by 30-60%. But then just dies again in another 5-15 minutes.
And there's a screenshot after I just power-cycled.
It jumped from 11% to 71%!!
Crazy!
I've also tried letting it get to 5% then charging it to 100%, done that twice. No luck. I don't know if this is related, but if I power it completely off, and plug it in, it turns on... kinda weird. My Note 3 doesn't do that, it just stays off and shows the battery charge indicator.

Hi, I have similar problem and I am with 4.3 android. I have battery loss when I play games. It drops to 2-3% really fast and after reboot it goes up to 35-40%. Once I fully depleted my battery and charge it. This time there were no battery lost. After the second charging problem persists.
If you manage to fixed it please tell us how.

I have a similar problem with my p600. the tablet is new, got it since a month or less.
at first i was amazed of the battery life i use it a lot for work writing documents and sheets on excel, battery used to perfom quite well giving me more than 5 hours of screen on, but recently the battery starts to drop very fast, now i can barely get around 2 hours of screen on.
i've already done 2 cycles of full discharge and then charge it completely with the tablet turned off. but the problem stills.
also sometimes when i reboot the tablet the battery goes from i.e 20% to 40% after the reboot.
im still looking for a fix or solution, today i found a new official firmware for my model (4.4 firmware for telcel mexico). going to wait until the tablet is fully charged and then flash the new firmware. I dont know if its going to help but i got nothing to lose.
by the way, sending it to semsung is not an option because of knox 0x1

Sorry to bump this, has anyone found a solution yet.
I've replaced the battery 3 times in about 9 months, but had this issue about a yr, was sent back to Samsung who changed the battery and supposedly updated the fw 4.4.2, I have since replaced the battery another 3 times every 3 months, each time either factory resetting or flashing a new rom, currently on official Smp600 5.1.1 BTU rom, today my battery was on 47%, I plugged in charger and was watching/streaming a movie on it, about 80 minutes later the tablet shut off, which was odd it's never powered off while on charge, powered it back on and battery said 19%, my previous issues has been the same as others, it can be on 100%, play a game, or stream a movie,or watch youtube etc and it will nosedive dramatically 20/30% at a time, sometimes within 10 mins it's gone from 100% to less than 30%, it's clear there's some sort of issue if others have it, I was wondering if a thread should be made to list ppl with this issue to see how many there are and go from there.

S4 Mini overheat and battery drain after KitKat Update

Hi all.
I am a new user of this community.
I am looking for a fix to my troubles.
Two weeks ago I updated my s4 mini to KitKat via OTA.
My Galaxy was TOTALLY officially, no custom rom, no recovery, no root... so i updated in the "classic" way.
From that day my smartphone drains battery really, really, fast and becomes really hot.
I am talking about 50° celsius when i only browse internet or use whatsapp to send message, and in the same time the battery drains fastly.
I rooted the phone, look to wakelock, look to process that could drain it, i made two factory reset, flash via Odin to the Italy Stock 4.4.2 (before it has got the English firmware version), buy a new battery, use different charger, calibrate it by app, calibrate it with the non-root method... but the problem persist.
I have got GPS off, Wifi OFF, NFC Off, S-Beam Off, Bluethoot Off... i only use internet via GSM or UMTS, no LTE.
To browse I use Opera Mini, but it's the same thing with Chrome.
I don't know what to do, i don't think it's an app problem, and it's impossibile that is by hardware, because with Jeally Bean the smartphone goes great.
I am actually trying Coolify after try Battery Doctor and a lot of other apps, like Gsam Battery, Greenify, Battery Calibrate ecc...
I've attacched some screenshot here. How can you see by the battery graph the battery drains like there's not a tomorrow in same time :crying:
ps: sorry for my english, how can you see by the screenshot i am italian.

You have to root and install recocery on your device. There's a thread arnd here created by Arco for you to find the recovery files. He also provided a kernel for KitKat regarding the wakelocks if im not mistaken. So flash that kernel and like i said, recovery and root is needed.

tnx for your information...which that be soon suported 4.4
Android says me that i've got the 56% of battery at this moment, with about 5 hours to use (only 34 minutes of screen on and GSM only mode)
In the same time 3C Toolbox says that i've spent the 34%. That's mean i've got the 64% of battery.
It could be an Android indicator error?
I tried to calibrate battery using Battery Calibrate, now i will do it with 3C toolbox, maybe it's better.
So, using Coolify i see a little improvement in temperature (never up 45°) and the drains seems go slowly then before.

If its the indicator, then what causes the CPU heating? Battery indicators in all devices are not accurate even after making it "accurate". Like eg, my Galaxy Wonder had 18% battery. After reboot while charging i got 90% and lasted a few hours. But honestly, no heating issues back then.
I still am confident that its a kernel problem. Being a flash-a-holic, i didn't try the 4.4 update then cos of KNOX

Yes, probably the only things to do is flash a new kernel and a new rom.
But i bought only 6 months ago this f***ed Samsung, so I don't wanna loose the warranty (i love my old Galaxy Next, i could flash it how many times i wanted, because there isn't no stupid knox)
I installed the App Opp Xposed Framework, i found that Google Service uses location even if i say him to don't use it, and even if i turn off gps. So I stop him, I even stop the "keep awake" options in his menù.
But in 5-10 minutes i didn't watch any differences in battery life.
So, i risked to put off "keep awake" in "Android System" (because i watched that "android system" keep awake the phone often), and nothing it's happening now. I am charging my phone, then I will try if there's battery improvement (but i don't think)
Same issue here. Got the phone two weeks ago. Sometimes during charging it would heat up to 47C. Also is this normal battery life?
Note: Power saving is on.
Mine got to 49C yesterday at 2am before going to sleep. Literally, when I touch the screen, I feel it burning. I'm on stock ROM. The battery, on the other hand wasn't one of the worst times I had it. It went down drastically from 10%, which isn't bad compared to going down drastically from like 30% like I once had.
It may be a battery problem, and it may be a firmware problem. But I suspect that it's both. I got 2 batteries, and when I have problems with one, I turn to the other, and it's a continuous loop. I guess 4.4.4 will fix some of the problems, hopefully.
The screenshots explain everything.
Peak temperature at 49C. The constant green line (straight line) shows when the phone was off. You can see the temperature going down then.

Its a Samsung problem. People actually told me to steer clear off 4.4 update to get away from problems like this.
You guys should try the S5 ROM here.

Battery; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.macropinch.pearl
Searching online I found that battery drain is a problem of KitKat 4.4.2, and that S4, S4 mini and Note 3 are the most affected by this problem. The factory reset, that is often suggested is useless. I made it 4 times in the last 2 weeks.
I even change the stock rom, from the UK 4.4.2 to Italy 4.4.2, with no improvement.
The only way is to wait an official update (if Sasmung will update again this phone), or try a Lollipop or 4.4.4 custom rom.
I could say that rooting the phone by Towel Root (knox 0x0 flashing before the old kernel) and using:
- Coolify (with this app running in background in 3 days the phone stay under the 45° celsius)
- App Opp Xposed (deny the access to position to any app and put "Kepp Away" off for a lot of app)
- GserviceFix
- DisableService (to stop some process, like the wereable process on Google Play Service)
And freezing all the useless software pre-installed, i get some little, but important, improvement
At this time I have 50% of battery with around 3 hours from the unplugged and with around an hour to use with display on in gsm mode (no wifi). Before KitKat updated this wasn't good, but if i hadn't root now i would have 35 or less percent

I would be better off with a custom ROM than Offcial Samsung Stock ROM. 4hrs of SOT (without WiFi) just with light browsing, gaming and some video watching
I do understand you guys don't wanna void warranty but I guess its better than buying batteries every month
Anyways, i guess some improvement for this is simply to wait for Samsung's update OR try out greenify. I believe Greenify can hibernate apps that causes the most overheating

For what it's worth I had similar over heating on my i9300 and my current phone i9195. I believe it mostly stems from the screen. The screen in a phone and laptop will be the biggest drain on power, by far, second to none.
Unfortunately, once a battery has experienced regular rapid battery loss from the screen being on too bright and too often, the battery becomes pretty poor at holding charge. And one of those screenshots shows the screen zapping the most... Remember, even if its on charge it's still hitting your battery for power. Now I never let the screen above 45-50% brightness.
If you're running stock and have power saver activated then turn the screen down, and remove as many unnecessary apps as possible. If you're rooted then there's plenty more you can do and my favourites are Droidwall to prevent apps from using your mobile connection and a custom kernel with app to under volt the cpu and gpu, but there's a lot more you might be able to do...

I put the S5 Proyect rom with Brisk Kernel and the problem persist.
It's not possibile was an hardware problem, because in Jeally Bean was everything fine.
But now it's really strange, sometimes the battery drain a lot, but yesterday night with the 10% i use it a lot to whatsapp before to see it shut down automatically. I don't kwow what to do
A battery isn't considered hardware by most as its a consumable; its not expected to last the lifetime of the phone.
Just because it was fine on JB you can't discount the battery cells failing. I assume you went from JB to KK, and not downgrade? If so i believe the screen zapping the battery too much causing the battery to begin failing holds true...ie, 6 months ago it was fine on JB but now its bad. Between then and now the battery has been hammered.

lollipop battery

It seems that with the new update I am getting less battery life then when kit Kat I have everything the same expect no root and I would usually get around 5 1/2 battery life on kit Kat with root but now I'm nearly getting 4? And I already factory reset it and it's still the same any help ?
Im having similar results, with 3 hrs screen time being my average. Fresh install, wiped clean, etc etc.
Mine is about the same. I have it set to power saving mode. Just not affecting background data. Getting a full day with it without having to plug it in till about 11pm, my day off charger starting at about 5:30am. It might be your settings and if you're a power user. I use mine all through the day, from streaming audio to social networking and talking and texting or surfing the web. Even watching videos!
My battery has taken a hit as well. I'm seeing about 20-30% less energy from what I used to get.
before the update I unplugat 7:30 I got to high school so I stream netflix I use YouTube occasionly read books at half Brightness with no auto sync nfc Bluetooth off WiFi off till I get home and when I'm not using my data I turn it off (even though I have unlimited ) then when I get home connect to WiFi and keep streaming YouTube and text social media and never worried till about 10 or 11 with around 5 hohrs and 40 or 45 min at 10 % but now I bear get 4 ost
You people do know that just like when you flash a ROM you have to train the update or ROM to the battery. To do this you have to completely drain and charge the battery a few times. I get better battery time with Lolipop then I did with KK. But I also trained the battery and system.
Yeah I was thinking that also but idk if that was the answer or there was something going on because when I first got this phone I couldn't get more then 4 hours ost but now I got more, until the update

You all have to also remember that if you use a KK rom that they were heavily tweaked by the rom maker most times for battery life/performance boosts.

These both make a lot of sense when it comes to battery life. I concur with them both. From a stock standpoint and the custom tweaked.
With stock NK2 I was getting almost 30 hours wothout charge and about 4 hours screen on.... now with OB7 i am lucky to get 10 hours with 1.5 hours screen on. Seriously thinking about going back to NK2. yes I did a full system wipe 3 times to be safe and still having said issue with battery

Have you fully discharged your battery to the point that the phone shuts off and then recharged with the phone off at least twice? If not you should give it a try. This is supposed to be standard procedure any time a ROM is changed or updated. The ROM has to learn the charge and discharge characteristics of the battery and the only way to do this is to have it run a couple of full cycles.

Accidentally gave thumbs up. Anyway, not sure if that's true. I've installed many roms across multiple phones (like most of you have) and I've drained and charged batteries after installing roms and sometimes I haven't. Either way I haven't noticed better battery life. It's usually the same.

This only gives you very small gains if any, also this matters more only if you don't ever let your phone die completely/have a non-stock battery.

Thats usually whats going to happen, small gain/loss. Nothing amazing unless you have an extended battery the device needs to learn to use.
