Simple Camera Adjustment - Nexus 5 Accessories

I can feel the hate pouring in now, but I'm gonna go ahead and post this anyway..
I realized I hated using a case on the N5, but the reason I chose to was because of the exposed camera. Even the slimmest case was too big. On all my precious devices, I always went caseless.
So naturally, being the poor college student I am, I pulled out the electric tape and cut a strip that went cleanly from the left side to right, and went right I over the camera. Then I pulled off the piece, and used an exact knife to cut a piece out of the center for the actual camera.
Again, I'm a poor college student that's in love with Android, so this was my best option. It gives the phone this weird industrial feel and look to it, which honestly grew on me. The first 5minutes or so I thought to myself "wow, this is dumb", but I promise you it isn't as bad as what you may think.
Well..I asked for it, let's hear the hate.

you're still leaving the camera exposed, you got to tape all of it.

It's no lip that'll keep away dust and dirt..So don't drag it on a desk or whatnot, but for the most part it's okay to put it down on a table and not have to worry about that outer ring getting scratched up like others have noticed
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I don't understand why people would hate on it because it is your phone anyway. Do whatever you want with it.
The only thing that in my mind would seem confusing is I know you say you are a poor college student but you purchased a phone that costs $349 + shipping + tax. Why not spend the extra $10-15 to get like a front and back protector from BSE or get a skin. They would contain cutouts that cover the camera glass. Offer that extra little bit of protection.

well its not looking that much weired but you can also mail to have a give away case from some case manufacturers as quite often they offer give aways...companies like Zagg, Casemate, otterbox, Amzer and many more are there...you can attach that pic with your mail then they will surely consider your case... but still I would say being a poor college boy you dare to carry this N5 then do one more dare to carry a good case not much pricey one...... to make your N5 more safe and secure one...

Oh don't get me wrong, I bought three cases and thought they were too big. As for skins, they're mostly "carbon fiber", which are ridiculously slippery in my hands, and I'm not a fan of wet apply skins, so. Yup. And screen protectors for the back? On this phone? If you know of one..please link it...I don't think it's possible to have a screen protector on a bent soft touch back..

[Q] Any way to repair minor scratches on screen?

Please let me know. My daughter scratched up my phone.
Some screen protector companies claim if you put on their product it will cover up minor scratches.
I bought screen guard from xoskins.com and it seemed to cover up the few minor scratches I had. Or, at least, I don't notice them anymore.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah, I believe that. Most of these screen protectors look so crappy after u put them on the regular screen scratched up looks better. If any of you guys know of any good ways to actually fix the scratch and not just cover it up please advise. Thanks for your help.
hm you must not be very good at installing screen protectors OR you are buying super cheap ones. Most of the quality ones if installed correctly look almost invisible after the first day or so (some almost immediately) and will cover minor scratches making them almost to compellingly invisible.
The only other things i can think of is if you have the time and patience i have heard of people who have had success using very very fine jewelers sand paper and polish. a friend of mine also used the pens you can get for paint scratches on your car and has had success on other devices. never used either myself
I recommend "luxmo" branded screen protectors. Can't tell my evo is sporting one but I'm fully protected. Covered minor scratches and prevents future ones.

Honestly not an answer to your problem but a good lead.
You can also find a cellphone repair shop and replace the glass. You can also order the part, adhesive, and DIY.

I paid $30 to get the garbage Zagg Invisible Shield "professionally" installed at Best Buy. There are like 3 pretty noticeable dirt specs under the cover so I'm not happy with this choice (especially considering I paid $30 for this service) So aggravated...
Trust Me, They Suck At Installing Them.

Ghost armor is the best.. i swear...
idk where they sell but I had mine done at the Dadeland Mall (Miami FL).40$ full wrap... this stuff is good... i once sat on my TP2 with a lighter under it... for at least 30 mins till i noticed... The screen had the FULL lighter imprinted (like bump-mapped)... 10mins later cleared right out...
i didnt like the rubbery feel around the whole phone... but the side strips really do protect it from scuffs and stuff... the screen i ended removing and getting money back... only have it on my batt cover now... looks way stylish and the screen itself is scratch-proof (i did the razor blade test as a skeptic).
the only thing i saw scratches the screen is scissors (if you try to), and rubbing it on rough concrete (literally rubbing it)... an old Nova screen which I got insurance replaced gave me these results...so thats how i know

omg, I lol'd right in my cubicle imagining saying "kk thx buh bye" to a bestbuy employee, get that one on video!
Yep... Ghost Armor is the ONLY thing I use. Better than invisishield. Lifetime warranty. I had to get a new one once and it was free... well... i did have to cover shipping of like a buck. Watch the video several times over and read read read before doing it.
It WILL hide those scratches.
BTW... could you ask your daughter how she scratched it? I saw a video of a guy when the EVOs first came out. He tried pretty hard to scratch it without a guard and he couldn't. So I am really curious.
I did go back to Best Buy today and I got much better Mobile guy this time. He told me that a lot of the InvisiShields were damaged...he had to go through like 6 of them till he found one without a blemish. He actually did a really good job installing it...doesn't justify paying $30 for a piece of plastic but at least he did a good job. I just hope it stays on.
As for how my daughter scratched it...I saw her with my cell phone face down on my glass coffee table. Maybe there was something abrasive between the screen and the coffee table. I'm really careful with my phone for the most part so I'm pretty certain that is when it happened.

Zagg Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 InvisibleSheild

Because I'm brave and they're giving me the Invisible Shield and a 50 dollar credit, I'm sending my GT-P7510 to Zagg to have them design an InvisibleShield product for it. It should go to them tomorrow and they said it takes them 24hrs to do the measurements and send the product back.
So Zagg may be the first ones that actually get a specifically designed Screen and full body sheild out for the thin GT10 model.
I'll keep everyone posted with what they tell me.
Wow thanks for doing this
I agree with kentoe, thanks a lot!
Hopefully accessory makers will start to notice the 10.1 over the next few weeks
Awesome. Surprised they hadnt requested the measurements directly from Samsung though. Although, being able to test skins on an actual device will be helpful.
They shouldve sent someone to I/O lol
I got the GT-P7510 back this morning. Zagg did a good job with it. It doesnt cover the silver bezel except on the top edge of the device. They also cut out holes for the camera and light sensor on front and back.
Im guessing it will hit the Zagg website here pretty soon.

Well, I've had it on my device for a week or more at this point. I honestly don't like the way the material feels at all. I've normally avoided the Zagg branded products in the past instead ordering from Bestskinsever.com. Because they were cheaper mostly.
It feels like the Zagg material is far too tacky and textured. Im hoping it hardens a little with time and smooths out. And for being "self healing" it didn't make it through the first trip in my computer brief on a plane without a very noticeable pinhead sized gash. It definitely hasn't healed yet. It also collects finger prints easily and they don't come off quickly at all.
They gave me a $100 in free gift cards which i proceeded to order covers for about every random gadget I own. Maybe they feel better than what the GT10 is covered in.
From a protection standpoint it seems to be doing its job though. I suppose that's the foremost reason any of us order the protectors. As for the release, I have no idea. Send them an email, they seem pretty good about replies.

Tab 10.1 invisibleSHIELD now available
When I checked earlier this week, I couldn't find an invisibleSHIELD for the Tab on Zagg's site except the one that appeared to be for the 7 inch, so I emailed them. Lo and behold, I received a reply today, and the shield for the 10.1 is now on the site!
(and, I can't post the link because I'm new.)
I've had an invisibleSHIELD on my iPod touch (3rd gen) since about a week after I got it. Yes, the feel is closer to "tacky" rather than the slick glass-only feel of the bare iPod, and I imagine it will be the same on the Tab. I actually prefer this - I kept being afraid I would drop my iPod.
I haven't had a problem cleaning it. Rubbing firmly on my pants leg is usually enough to clear the fingerprint buildup, and when the surface starts feeling icky I use a very, very slightly damp paper towel to clean it. Honestly, before I got the Shield, I didn't like the feel of the screen, but I have oily skin, so I leave lots of fingerprints behind. I also have not had a problem with the shield being damaged, beyond my deliberate efforts (see below).
So I don't sound like a commercial for Zagg... Be aware that the shield material doesn't handle rounded corners well. I had to trim the corners on my iPod's shield where they had pulled away and picked up pocket lint. Looks like they're avoiding that issue on the Tab's skin by not covering the edge. The shield also reduced the sensitivity of the touch screen - only slightly, but noticeably.
This is the link.

$30 for 10cents worth of plastic for just the front ($40 for front and back). They're nuts. Bodyguardz is $20, Kinomi is $16 and there is some cheap junk on eBay for $5. I'll either wait for a 50% off Zagg coupon or wrap it in saran wrap!
I bought one of these on release day. By 9pm that night I had already torn it off... felt like a 2 inch thick sheet of rubber tbh.
I've used Zagg in the past and it works, but for devices with gorilla glass like the 10.1 it's not necesary.
The back I think is the part that needs the protection.
I have a Zagg shield on my phone (Samsung Fascinate) and I love it. But I don't think I'm going to put one on my Tab. For starters, I think phones and other smaller devices (iPods, etc.) are much more prone to drops and other things that could cause scratches. And I've ordered the Samsung book cover case for my Tab, so that should protect the back and the screen reasonably well.

Stupid sprint carbon fiber case

I bought this case with my phone the day it came out because I wanted protection immediately. It was the only case available so I got it. I've taken care of my phone diligently and the only scratches it has are from the stupid sprint carbon fiber case. Is there any way to get any compensation from sprint for buying this stupid case or am I just stupid or both?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
which carbon case do you have? I have the black carbon one with the kickstand and no scratches. Also there is no way that sprint will compensate you.
I have the one that schnergun has as well and I got it the day my phone came as well. So far the only scratch I have on the phone is from a drop (before I put the case on it) other then that it's been very nice.
And as above I really doubt Sprint is going to do anything about it. It's wear and tear as they will see it.

Yup... and I'm not one of those people. I have no issues with this case. Is OP taking it on and off too much? How would one see the scratches without doing so? Sounds like it IS wear and tear...
TPU Scratches
I just got the carbon fiber/kickstand case yesterday. But my TPU case I've used for the last two months has scratched the crap out of my GS2 edges. I miss the chrome edge and rubbery back of my OG Epic. Wish they would've used that on this phone.

Of course I'm taking it off from time to time. I do it to clean the damn phone. I know the scratches are from the case because there are 5 perfectly straight lines across the side of the phone. I'm pretty sure it happens when removing the case. I am now using the phone with no case because at least if I take care of the phone it won't get scratches. Maybe the cases aren't all built the same and i got a badly made one.
I also don't think my phone should get scratches for taking a case off too much. It's a damn case. It's supposed to protect the phone not scratch it if I decide to remove it as many times as I want.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I've had this case since I bought my phone, and I remove it multiple times a day (I have the desktop charger at work), there isn't a single scratch anywhere on my phone and the case is a nice, snug fit. Maybe you just got a bad case.
That's what I'm thinking.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
At best, the store will exchange it for another of the same case, maybe they'll look at letting you switch it for a different case of equal value or have you pay the difference for a higher value case. You can always just ask the store.
As far as compensation, you probably won't find anyone that can see the scratches as anything to compensate for. (What compensation do you expect? Are you looking for a bill credit or a new phone?) It's wear and tear, and unless it affects the functionality of the phone, they're not going to do anything about it.
I just use a skin on mine, since I use the car and desk docks, but I also don't drop my phone. Ever. So I don't worry about needing some kind of case for it.

Have you tried this one? http://www.tridenteer.com/products/Aegis-Case-for-Samsung-Epic-Touch-4G-(Black).html
I'm still on my TPU, and the comment about the TPU scratching the phone is kinda scary. None on mine yet, but I'll keep an eye out. The TPU is a great case, I'd just like I need a little more protection. I drop phones a little more often than some of you guys do. Put an Aegis on the Evo 3D, and was very impressed. Not missing Otter at all,... Otter who? Still, I'd like to hear what other GS2 users of the Aegis are feeling about the case. Just can't seem to find any GS2/Aegis users right now.
Hey guys
Switched from an Evo 3D and an Evo 4g to Epic Touch and I have been using cheap hard cases on all my phones including my new Epic Touch baby and never have any problems with them. My phones always look band new and no scratches. I only pay $6 at my local swap meet
I have had the case and phone since new with wrist strap. I also have a really annoying nic on the upper left where the case grabs onto the phone....sucks as it stands out cause it makes the phone have chrome nic....it would be nice if sprint would cover/credit the case cost back as it damaged the phone. Instead of doing this, I went got invisible shield and ballistic case. I couldn't be happy.
I'm just taking it as a loss....
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I initially got the case cause I really needed protection asap, (somewhat of an idiot occasionally). BAD IDEA.
The Pro(s): light weight, thin, kickstand
The Con(s): lightweight, flimsy, cheaply made, really expensive, minimal protection.
I have sense upgraded to the trident aegis and couldn't be more happy with it. I feel like it really almost wouldn't matter what I do to it, my phone will still be okay. Build quality and materials used on it are VERY pleasing. Significantly more protective, not just for drops, but dust and dirt as well. It has mesh over the microphone and speakerphone holes so dust doesn't get in and has silicon flaps to protect the audio out and micro usb port. Buttons are very easy to use as well (no fumbling with the slick samsung volume and power buttons).
Hope that helps. Link to aegis case is in a comment above mine.

If it makes anyone feel better, I smash my Epic Touch hard against a table repeatedly as a sales tactic, after asking if the customer would dare do that to their iPhone.
I do not have a case on my ET (just a screen protector). No problems or dings on the corners yet from doing so, so hopefully that gives everyone some cause to worry less. This said, I do this because if I really messed up my phone, I could just get a replacement, so I really wouldn't advise phone smashing on a regular basis...
And with some/all due respect to the OP and some others, I would take delight in laughing at you, along with every other employee. Would you demand a new laptop from Dell because it got a scratch on it from the Dell case you purchased with your computer? If you did, do you think they would ship one right out to you?
Honestly, I could see your complaint if the case somehow scratched the screen of the device, but the sides or back? How does this affect the functionality of your device? Do you not pull as many chicks by showing them your shiny, pretty phone?

Friend dropped his phone from his lap while getting out of car and...

this is what happened from a 2 foot drop on to concrete. The car is a bmw 3 series so it's not even that high up...had it on his lap and got out with it still on his lap..fell to the ground
only protection was the flip cover, which obviously didn't help and you can see his cover tucked behind in the picture

I used to drop my Epic 4G all the time from at least four to five feet, often directly onto the screen itself and it shook it off every time. No screen cracks, barely a scratch, and no internal damage. That damn phone was bullet proof, brick proof, and thanks to the CM team, future proof. I don't think we'll see another phone like it again.
I agree I use to drop my epic touch sometimes but it never cracked. I had a close call with my S3, had my phone in my lap at the doctors office when I stood up my phone fell straight into my purse. I didn't even hear it. I thanked God.

That sucks for him. At least he had insurance. This is why I got me a otterbox. There is a video where they did a test between the GS3 and the iPhone and the iPhone won as far as dropping it etc. But its a thin phone. So not much protection. Yeah, the great thing about insurance is that you don't need a case/protection which makes the phone bulky and look ugly.
If it's worth 10$/mo is up to you. Personally, I think it is since I end up breaking my phone and getting it replaced at least once every few months. And that was with my old phone which was EXTREMELY durable.
Ya I did this at least 5 times with my old Evo lol I really try to be carefull now. THat phone took a beating, doubt this one will.
The glass on the SIII is thinner than the old epic and even the evo, couple that with the larger overall screen size and it makes for an easily cracked piece of glass. I have tried taking the glass of a couple at work to change from white to blue because I dont like the trim color on the blue and it cracks every time. the screen itself is even glued to the glass.
The gs2 had way more durability.

Insurance...$11/month plus $150 deductible right? It's basically like buying another phone, better than not having insurance and having to pay $600 or whatever the retail without a contract costs. I have a very cool looking Rearth Ringke case on my phone right now (more looks than protection) but have an Otterbox Defender on back order right now for peace of mind.

I have a very cool looking Rearth Ringke case on my phone right now (more looks than protection) but have an Otterbox Defender on back order right now for peace of mind.

I actually buy it from bestbuy so I can get their $10/mo geeksquad protection. There's also no deductible.
Personally, I think any case is ugly and ruins the phone. I'm also a sucker for phones being thin (makes it look sexier) and cases make them fat. A lot of people will probably disagree with me, but that's my own personal opinion.
That said, if bestbuy adds a deductible that's more than $100, I'd probably stop using insurance and put a case on it even if it means I have to sacrifice looks.

Anyone gone commando?

I am not planning to get a case for my HTC One. Screen protector only. This is what I did with all my previous Android phones - Atrix, RAZR, and One XL ... however those phones were not made of aluminum. This is day 2, and my phone still looks OK. Question: has anyone else gone commando, and do you have any scratches? Is it wiser to get some kind of case?
With my old iPhone 4, I simply put a screen protector on the front and rear of the device. Is there such a thing for the HTC One?
haven't had a case for a week since i've gotten it. Still looks mint.
No case here..that's why I pay for insurance and not bothering with a screen protector...always hated those and ruins the clarity

I'm using it commando, but I'm wondering whether to get a case...
Yeah, I dropped mine twice and no major issues besides some small nicks that are making me OCD so I'm probably going to get the Poetic Atmosphere case after they release the updated version with the home button cut out. Meanwhile, I've ordered this sexy Skinomi carbon fiber skin.
Honestly, if you're going to go commando, you might as well not put a screen protector on. That's the strongest part of the phone anyway. (thank you gorrila glass)

No plans to get a case and hide the beautiful aluminum body
Commando all the way... Otherwise it'll feel like any other phone out there

Went full commando with by GS2 and am mostly decided on doing the same with my One. I'm considering a leather wallet-type or flip case, but no screen protectors for me...just doesn't feel the same.
I've gone naked for over 3 weeks now, can't bring myself to put a case on this beauty. Starting to get paranoid now though, and OCD with the tiniest dent at the top of the phone. I ordered this pouch last week.http://www.etsy.com/uk/transaction/128631973
I haven't run cases or screen protectors on my phones in years, certainly not going to put one on this beautiful phone!
That being said, I might get a pouch for it for certain times when I have to relinquish possession of said phone for 'security' reasons. I dislike it when I can't keep hold onto it.
Personally I like to use a pouch. When I am using the phone it is commando. But when it goes in my pocket it is wrapped up safe, or when I put it on the desk I can put the pouch underneath. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

Well since you're a fellow Cincinnatian, have her make me one too.
I'm leaning towards the opposite.. I haven't gotten a case yet usually I use one.
I've kept a real tight grip so far, but I know it's gonna drop soon.
I probably won't go with a defender case just maybe a nice sleek clear case or a commuter to retain some of the physical beauty.
I can't see not using a case it's a slippery phone and the glass is not worth breaking.

Commando is the way to go, I think it would be a disgrace to such a beautiful phone to cover it unless it's a aluminum case that adds to the aesthetics

I went commando for one night...and got a nick in the chamferred edge =[
It was in my pocket, and a girl was grinding on me while I was sitting down. Nothing sharp in my pocket, soft couch, no idea how it got nicked but it did.
Sad part is I had a thin clear TPU case but took it out to show people...grr

Just my take on it. Aluminum is not a hard metal, and it will at least dent and scratch. I would go with at least a thin TPU case. I'm using an Otterbox Defender on mine right now, but I may go with basic TPU soon.
I have never had a case for any phone and I certainly can understand why people think this is too beautiful to cover up. But for me it is too beautiful to leave it without a case and me mess it up. That's why I got the diztronic clear tpu case, happy enough with it.
