AOSP KitKat ROMs have a simple phone dialer without Google's Caller ID.

Google Caller ID lets you:
1. search for places, businesses within the dialer
2. Display caller id of businesses when they call you
3. [In 2014] Display caller id of any Google user.
Essentially, a TrueCaller alternative

How to Get it.
Pre-requisites:
- Rooted Kitkat AOSP ROM
How to:
1. Copy GoogleDialer.apk into /system/priv-app
2. Change permissions to RW-R--R--
3. Don't delete any other files like Dialer.apk Teleservice.apk, they are required
4. and reboot
I did follow by instruction on my Note 1 Omni 4.4. After finish call then no button to hangup!!!! Any idea?
same here no dialer menu during call...

What are you running?
The trick is to leave the dialer as is and add Google dialer in addition. You'll have 2 phones after reboot.
The new dialer will allow you to search businesses.
Didn't check the incoming call functionality though.
BTW, the new dialer is missing the nice statistics tab...

Omni ROM uses a custom pop-out call-receive screen. It won't work with this ROM. You need vanilla AOSP dialer and phone app which is ideally found in CM 11

It will be interesting to see someone can get this to work on the sense 4.4 that should be here any day... Caller ID should be a given with todays tech, it should be standard, not a "feature"
I typed in a name of a local business and it doesn't search for near by places. Any one else getting this?
Yeah same here no search
So after noticing that the Sense Kit Kat dialer does not have the new search feature i had a bit of a play around. I took the dialer.apk, contacts.apk and contacts odex.apk from GP rom and pushed them to priv-app with the correct permissions and they seem to work. The only thing i noticed is the dialer doesn't have the all contacts button on the main screen. You have to open the menu for all contacts. I love the new search feature and i hope htc add it to the stock dialer with a future update.

Calls are still handled with the stock dialer. I played further by pushing the contacts provider.apk and contacts provider odexed.apk from GE rom. This made the GE dialer fully functional but caused Sense dialer to fc constantly even after i froze it. Im sure a good app porter can make this work. For now i will just keep the GE dialer and use it as my yellow pages.

Hello XDA folks
One of the things that most people complain about in the Galaxy S2 probably is the dialer. The call recording, the noise cancellation, the auto-rotation etc. And there are a lot of threads that address each of these issues... separately. There isn't a single Phone.apk that has them all - no rotation, call recording, full screen picture, disabled noise cancellation, no increasing ring. The "perfect" dialer doesn't exist.
Why is that? Is it because some modifications are incompatible with each other? Or that no one had the idea of doing this?
I'd gladly do it and share it, but I've got the programming skills of an ape (maybe a bit worse). There are guides how to do it all, I've seen them. They just need to be followed
Any thoughts?

The Perfect Phone.apk was found! Thanks to grgsiocl for pointing out it's part of TurkbeyRom.
The Phone.apk is part of TurkbeyRom. Check it out here.
Features:
Basically everything
- Call recording
- No rotation
- No increasing ringtone
- Fullscreen contact picture
- Noise suppression off by default
- Search contacts by 2nd, 3rd name etc.
- Works on odexed ROMs (just delete/rename both Phone.apk and Phone.odex (and Contacts too, if you want the dialpad).
- Doesn't support multi-dpi... yet
Looks like this:

}
Go into flight mode. Then download and replace the 2 .apk files from here: Link Set permissions rw-r--r-- , reboot and it should work. Have a backup just in case.
You can only replace Phone.apk if you want to keep you old dialpad's theme
Thanks to:
turkbey for making all these tweaks into one super package
grgsiocl for pointing me to TurkbeyRom

Agree with you.....
Need a full screen caller id, with a sleek looking dialer intreface!!!
This is the dialer I currently have. Cant remember exactly where I got from but it was part of a theme. Thanks to the person who made this mod.All I did was mix n match bits from this theme and that theme.....
This is by far the best looking dialer I have come across for the galaxy s2!! Its not so "kiddish"!! Lol!!
it is available in turkbey ROM v 27. The dialer comes with t9 match tooo. If you want PM me, i will send you the contacts.apk file instead of downloading the entire ROM. Contacts.apk is based on KJ3

100% agree with you.
At the moment I am using exDialer-v35 (MIUI-like dialer)
Very happy with it. Beautiful graphics & sorting philosophy.
But not perfect. It has only the dialer, no backup, no 3G available.
But at the moment in my opinion it's the best..

Works quite well did the Root Explorer method without any FC issues. You who had problems, did you change permission and owner? Perhaps that is why you continue getting FCs.
Personally I use this for the fullscreen contact images. The contact and dialer is fugly but I use exDialer and its very pretty and I still get the fullscreen pictures
I'm on Cog i777 r2 (kj3) w/ speedmod k2-18t11.

What good is the dial pad unless you have your contacts phone numbers memorized.
I dont get why I cant just open the phone and dial someones name on the key pad and it starts suggesting contacts? Even my old non smart phones could do this.

Definitely one thing I'll miss coming from HTC Sense. The smart dialing feature is amazing. I never ever open my People app.
Maybe someone patented it and Google does not own or license the patent?
That or they don't care.

It's actually still in the OS and isn't that hard to do. You don't even have to go into the contacts list or dialer.
Step 1. Click the Google bar at the top of any home screen.
Step 2. Start typing in the contact's name.
Step 3. Select the contact and tap the phone number to call.

Not the same thing... first of all, searching that way doesn't only show contacts, shows a bunch of other crap you may not want and the contacts aren't even listed first. Second of all, using the dialpad to just type in the name is *much* quicker than doing it on the full keyboard.
I agree with everyone else on this thread, it would be awesome to have that back. One thing I'm missing from my Dinc2
I had no idea that wasn't available...I am glad I ran across this thread and also glad I cancelled my letstalk order.

Try 3rd party dialers like RocketDial
The T9 search feature actually can be done in application layer
I did not get Nexus yet, but I am using the i9000 with ICS porting. I am using RocketDial as my primary dialer . RocketDial actually has been optimized to work on ICS . It is definitely the best smart dialer I can find . Smarter than ICS stock dialer at least joking. You can search through dial pad (T9 search) or you can search through text search bar; You can search in name or phone or company ,or email or notes, or websites.. any other field in the contact.
Not sure whether RocketDial works on Galaxy Nexus or not , but you can have a try . Free version is here .
You could always push the mic icon and say, "call blah blah" voice functions are awesome.

Been using Dialer One for 2 years now. Can't find anything better.
https://market.android.com/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne&hl=en
You can set it up to work the same as a BB dialler. Start tying and it searches across names and numbers at the same time and shows you matching contacts or log entries. There are several UI options too and the dev seems active.
The T9 dialer, aka the one called smart dialer here, is patented technology. Since Ice Cream Sandwich is open software, Google does not implement technologies into it that it is unable to cover with its own licenses. As a result, Android 4.0 does not have it (and likely Android never will).
HTC implements T9 since they are licensing the technology.
Voicedial?
"Call Mum"
*Bam!
Go Dialer also does this. I wish it was stock. Thanks to the last poster. I didn't know that.

Both HTC and Samsung own the T9 license. Google could have asked Samsung to extend the license to the GN, since it is a Samsung phone...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T9_(predictive_text)
Incidentally ICS and all other versions of Android uses predictive text, just not using a numeric keyboard.
Also, for some unknown reason the search bar at the top of GN does not search across the call log.
I also noticed that typing in 0189 brings up all my 01895xxxxx contacts, but typing in 01895 asks if i want to create a new contact. It appears the search is only on the first 4 characters.
the feature is present in SMS
when i wrote 1st number it gave me suggestions
why they cant use it in the dialer while it is used in messaging?!!!

Wow, thought one would never come. Considering I use Gtalk almost religiously, it's fantastic that there's finally a widget of some sort for it. I've always wondered why something like Gtalk didn't have more support for it.
This app is a good start but like others have mentioned, sending messages from the widget itself would be awesome.

Thanks for the tip, it worked and the widget did download and install now. But now I can not use the widget. I go between a Sense ROM(Android 4.0.3 and Sense 3.6) and a CMX ROM(Android4.1.1) and the Sense ROM is the one I had trouble installing the widget on. On the Sense ROM the widget showed up once in my list of widgets and put the widget on my home screen. But it just opens up to the settings for the widget, and it does the same when I open the widget in the app tray. So I removed it from my home screen and now it does not show in my list of widgets but it is in my app tray still. I will be testing it on my CMX ROM later today and will post back with feed back on it as well.
Edit: I just now realized this thread is in the Galaxy Nexus Themes and Apps forum. I have a HTC Sensation but I found this thread by google search for a G Talk Widget.
Has this been removed from the market?
Is an apk still available?
TIA

I would really like this. Looks like it was removed from the market. Anyone have the APK available?
MODDED MMS.APK FOR SGS III
This Mms.apk is the same as the stock one, except for the mods I applied. It is the most close to the stock Mms.apk, just with some better features! ;D
Downloads: If you're looking for the download links, I took them from the attachments because they were not specifically for the S3. If you still want this mod, visit my thread in I9000 forums, here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667615. You can install it fine! It will work! Some people are reporting a multiple thread bug, but you can give it a go! It won't brick your phone! LOL you can backup your mms.apk, install my mod (made for I9000) if it works, you keep that freakin cool mod I made, if it doesn't work, you can always go back to your previous mms.apk. AS SIMPLE AS THAT!
FIX MULTIPLE THREADS FOR SAME CONTACT: try to add your country code to the contact in the phonebook. For example, in Portugal the country code prefix is 00 351.. so if my mobile number was 961 234 567, you would have to edit the phonebook and make it 00 351 961 234 567. Try and it tell me the results. Ty.
Features:
- Inverted (optional): black background instead of white (check attachments to download the apk you want: inverted or non-inverted);
- No MMS conversion: you can type very long messages and it won't automatically convert it to a MMS;
- Unlimited Recipients list: you can now send your message to more than 20 people at the same time;
- Original Time Stamps: this makes original time stamps setting actually work: it shows the exact sent time of received messages, not the moment when you actually receive it on your phone;
- New Line Option: have you noticed that stupid "" key next to the space bar? Yeah, where the "new line" key should be? Google did it! But this mod changes that "" key to "new line" key as it should always be.
- 160 characters capacity: 160 characters capacity per SMS for other languages other than English, and not 60-70. No more extra costs for longer messages!
- Bigger Writing Window: if you notice, when you are typing long sms, you can only see 3 sentences of what you've typed. I've changed that value to 5 sentences and it feels much better. Now you can see 5 sentences of the message you're typing.
- Emoji Support: a set of 471 nice emoticons.
- Changed default android heart smiley: do you know that green smiley when you type '<3'? Removed that green android and replaced it with a neat heart (see screenshots).
- Speech Bubbles: some nice balloons around the texts. Two styles: touchwiz bubbles (tw-bubbles) or iphone bubbles (iphone-bubbles).
- With/without Avatars: you can choose the version with avatar pics or the one without them.
- With/without SGS III icons: the versions with this tag have the messaging app icon of the SGS III, as well as the smileys.
- Pop-up notification: Enable this in settings. A pop-up will show up when a new message is received. You can reply right away.
How to install:
Using a file explorer:
If you've downloaded the Mms_xxxx.apk:
1. Use something like root explorer
2. Go to /system/app and mount R/W
3. Rename current 'SecMms.apk' to 'SecMms.apk.bak' (this is a backup)
4. Copy the 'Mms_modded.apk' you downloaded to /system/app
5. Rename 'Mms_modded.apk' to 'SecMms.apk'
6. Change 'Mms.apk' permissions to: rw-r--r--
7. Mount R/O
8. Reboot your phone.
Changelog:
[09-08-2012] - Starting SGS III project:
- First modded versions.
Future features:
- Select multiple recipients from contacts list: I really miss this tiny feature from GB. Instead of typing contacts name one by one, you could go to your contact list and select multiple contacts for mass sms. If someone has the time and knowledge to help me do this, I would be very thankfull.

no cwm zips.. sorry. takes to long to upload even more attachments.. install with something like root explorer, replace messaging app and change the proper permissions..
i dont know if this can be fixed.. but i noticed that when you scroll over a thread of a message, there's this white color that appears on the space below the avatars.. it just ruins the pure black appearance of the app though.. ill attach a screenshot for reference.. thanks for this great mod though! ;-)

hmm, this never happened before.. could you tell me specifically which version you're using so I can solve this?
I don't have this issue with the white bars.
One request. Would it be possible maybe to get a modded version non inverted with avatars and normal emoticons and not those ugly green android ones?
Scribbled on I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I don't have a white bar issue either. But I noticed your change the notification icon too... I prefer it stock, the icon used is not pretty.

Having an issue here, love these, and they work fine EXCEPT I receive no notifications. I'm on stock odexed rom with root. Any ideas?

this isn't a problem of my app but from ics itself. Sometimes when you don't receive notifications, if you go to your homescreen, long press the home button, you get to the task manager. wipe the messaging app to end it and now you should get sms notifications.
just want to show you a video of the bug that i was talking about.. sorry for the quality as i used an SGS2 for video recording.. hope this helps you dev in solving the issue..

would it be possible to remove the gray message count next to the name?
I've ported a few of the Sense 4.1 skins to Sense 4+. As Sense 4+ ROMs uses a new fusion.apk for the new themes, old skins from Sense 4.0 and Sense 4.1 don't appear to work if you simply pull the .apk from other ROMs.
It's my first attempt at porting anything like this, and the skins aren't 100% as they should be, such as the bottom bit of the app drawer always stays blue, but the main homescreen is how it should be with the widgets.

Original Skins:
.zip contains all 3 original .apk files for the ported skins including the fusion.apk file for them.

Installation:
Place them on to your SD card and click on them to install them from there.
Known issues:
The World Clock crashes to homescreen without an error message. If you need to use the Alarm clock, this can be quite problematic. To fix it use a 4+ Skin, selecting Alarm, then switching to the 4.1 Skin, so when you open the clock app, it goes straight to Alarm.
The background of the phone dialer is messed up with Serene in use.
The bottom bar (on the app drawer) is always the default colour with the default blue background colours.
Background colours on the lockscreen icons for Infinite aren't there.
?
I think this goes for all HTC's Sense 4.1 themes. They won't work in Sense 4+. I'm using the maximus 4.0 ROM and tried installing the Sense 4.1 themes 'Infinite' and 'Fracture', but they just don't show up under Themes.

I realised this, but took a different path and managed to get it working. I've updated the first post to share it if anyone else is interested.
Great stuff. Do you think you can do the same for the themes "Infinite" and "Fracture"? I can upload them to you if you want...

Okay, great. Please try to convert as many of the Sense 4.1 themes as possible. Thank you.

Sorry it took me a while. Was extremely busy over the weekend, and only had chance tonight to sit down and get Infinite and Fracture brought over.
All the downloadable skins off of HTC Hub or whatever it was called should work with Sense 4+, just need to get hold of the .apk as I don't think they rely on fusion.apk like Serene, Infinite, Fracture does. I'm using InsertCoin 10 at the moment, and not sure I'd be able to go back to an ICS ROM to try and check (due to the updated framework on my phone).
Did you actually test these? I see missing background colours, ring designs...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Sorry try them now, I put the wrong .apk files on Dropbox.
The correct lockscreens are displayed now, but I don't know how to get the little circle backgrounds around lockscreen icons. I can have a look and see if I can get it working, but it is all quite new to me this.
If you wanna try yourself, all I did was use Virtuous Ten Studio, decompiled fusion.apk, Infinite.apk and Fracture.apk. In the assets folder of fusion.apk, there's folders for each theme. I took the Fracture folder, for example, then pasted it in to the assets folder within Fracture itself. There must be more to it to get the theme 100%, so I'll have a look when I can.
The Serene one is wonderful :good:

You can get the skins from htc-hub if you're on 4.1

I'm still trying to sort some bugs out, but I'm kinda stuck, unless anyone knows what's up?
If you have one of the Sense 4.1 skins in use, then The World Clock will crash to homescreen without any message when the cities are plotted on to the map.
The background of the phone dialer is messed up with Serene in use.
The bottom bar (on the app drawer) is always the default colour with the default blue background colours.
is there a way to port sense 4+ skins to sense 4.1?
To have the clock work do the follow :
1-download the skin.
2-do not install the apk file.
3-move the downloaded apk file and put in system/app then change the permission then directly restart your phone should work perfectly.

Has this worked for you? I tried putting it straight in to /system/app, but it doesn't appear in Skins after a restart.

Confirmed, works fine on Maximus v5! No crashes in clock app.
Used root explorer to copy to system/app, set permissions as per other skins, reboot.

You're right. The Serene I was using for testing was didn't have the edited AndroidManifest, so got the proper one and it works fine. I'll edit the first page.

After further testing, while the Skins do appear, does the lock ring and navbar change skin as well for you? After putting them in /system/app, I select the skin, but the lock ring etc stay as stock, but the background image changes.
