I got the Otterbox for my Xoom when it first arrived, having 2 kids and chucking it in and out of the car I was wanting something hardy to protect the device.
However after a few months now its a bit too bulky for what I want.
Does anyone here have a decent folio job they can recommend thats protective enough without the bulk?
Preferably in the UK, I like the look of the Zoogue one with its handstrap come headrest strap but to get one and get it shipped over here is going to cost £50..

I recommend Zoogue, it is on the more expensive side, but the design is very solid.

I agree. I have one and love it. I currently have the black one and am thinking about getting the pink one as well.
Ended up ordering the Motorola one from Amazon, will keep an eye out for someone in the UK that does the Zoogue ones..
Does the folio case have a charging connection? so i can plug it in whilst 'on the case'

No, you would have to modify it with a dremel.

Mines just turned up, you can have the device in the case but as the ports are covered you have to have the case open to plug the charger in, and because the charger is at the bottom you cant really have the Xoom on charge and use it at the same time, unless you have it in your hands, on that point the Otterbox wins as you can put it in its stand thing unside down and have the power cable in what is then the top, folio cases dont let you do that :/
Here's hoping the Xoom2 has its power in the side because with this folio you can access the power, camera, speakers, sim/sd slot, the only slots you cant access while its shut are the bottom ones, might not be an issue for the majority of users but tbh you would of thought that someone in Motorola's "asthetics" department would of tested it with at least there own accessory line....
I ended up getting this for my wife's Xoom and it works well while being much thinner than it looks in the pictures. Here is a link if you need:

I bought the AYL case off Amazon. The current version has the bottom ports exposed.
I originally had the moto folio case, but I definitely prefer the AYL one, not just because the ports are exposed, but because it seems to be decent leather.

Only want to protect the front, something like the iPad smart cover that hook onto the side. I have a skin behind so i don't want to block it with a case

I'm also looking for something similar. Either something just for the front or something thin/clear on the back. What is the slimmest case/cover available for decently cheap? Not really worried about dropping it; just want something to protect it inside of a coat pocket and looks decent

i have been looking for this type of case but all i see is leather ones
The official Premium Case or Poetic Slimline case are probably the closest you'll get. The latter is my preference.
I'm surprised no manufacturer has worked out a way to adhesively attach a screen cover like the Slimline's onto the edge of the tablet, you'd just need a moulded plastic strip to run down the left edge of the machine covered with some non-permanent adhesive a la the Dodocase that the actual cover was attached to. Then you'd have something that works a bit like the iPad smartcase without the magnets.

The poetic slimline is still too bulky for me. It essentially triples the thickness with that extra back layer plus it hides skins.
I too am surprised; it seems fairly straightforward to make...

Thats a pretty good idea. The only thing could be tricky is the magnets hold the cover down on the iPad.
This is the only case I've seen which has a "transparent" back.
I've not seen it in the flesh, so I don't how how good they are, or if they can be shipped overseas.

It seems more white or translucent than clear. Are there any cases out there that just cover the front? (Like a keyboard case just without the keyboard so it's essentially just a plastic cover) Or maybe something like what Logitech has for their keyboards where it covers the device but when removed can act as a stand.

Not to mention that Apple patented the magnetic latching mechanism that holds the cover on, so any other cover like that (with no back) would need to either find an alternative method (like the adhesive mentioned above) or license the technology from Apple. Or just do it and wait to get sued...
I bought the rooCASE Origami case from Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Google-Tablet-Origami-SlimShell/dp/B00ET9H588
It's thin enough and functions very much like the iPad Smart Cover, with the additional benefit of allowing the N7 to stand on portrait mode.
The biggest problem: for landscape mode, where you fold the front cover just like the iPad, the magnet in the front cover WILL turn OFF the Nexus 7. I asked for a replacment form the seller (she said it's defective), but the replacement did the same thing.
I went to Seidio's site today to see what their progress on cases for the Nexus 5 look like and found that they have their holder page up with all of the usual cases there. Everything is showing as "Under Development" but the prices are up at least.
http://www.seidioonline.com/LG-Google-Nexus-5-s/9164.htm
You can go to another phone's section and get an idea of what the cases look like. I am personally looking for a ruggedized case with a holster and a kickstand, so far it looks like the absence of Otterbox (just like the Nexus 4) means that Seidio might be the only option.
no battery case
hmm i wonder if that damn metal kickstand (which uses magnets) will interfere with wireless charging

Doubtful, the official charger that is due to hit the play store sometime utilizes magnets to hold the N5 in place with the metal discs in the N5. Magnets can impact the compass and such, but not wireless charging.

A battery or an Obex case are the only things I would consider frrom Seidio.
Gah! Where's the Convert?
well after doing a bit of research it seems that the N5 cases under development are very similar to their Nexus 4 cases, and their N4 cases work perfectly with wireless charging. so all there is to do now is wait patiently...
well i guess there's no chance of a november release at this point...
You can still click the links even though there is no product picture up and they state whether the phone can use NFC and or wireless charging on each product. Also the convert is there, a couple of them. I have an email in asking when they might release but no answer yet.
I'm not sure if alot of you know this - but this company has a partnership with bestBuy where they sell the exact same cases under the "platinum series" brand. The fine print on the packaging even says seidio on it and they are roughly HALF the price.
So be on the lookout for these new cases at BestBuy for less cash
one troubling thing i noticed is that on their site they still list LG G2 cases as "under development". The G2 was released ~50 days BEFORE the Nexus 5. if THAT's still under development, i'd say the odds of us seeing the N5 cases before 2014 are not great. seems like seidio really screwed up with the timing of this release...
They now have the cases on the website, sent them an enquiry about them working with the wireless chargers and they said that they don't
I wonder if its because of the metal kickstand.

keeping my fingers crossed, I have the i Blason but unfortunately the fit and finish just isn't very good.
Seidio is really pushing for the kickstand.
Dilex and Surface NOW SHIPPING!
I just went to the Seidio web site and the Nexus 5 Surface and Dilex cases/holsters are listed as NOW SHIPPING. I absolutely LOVE Seidio's Convert case for my Galaxy Nexus - it was a big step up from the Otterbox Defender. I'm certainly going to try either the Dilex or Convert (when it's available), but I'm not liking the idea of a kick stand adding to the bulk of the case.
just got my surface combo. the kickstand adds zero bulk. the case is super thin and super light. makes the i-blason i was using kind of brick-like. and wireless charging works just fine, as i suspected

They make my favorite cases but I won't get one till some colors come in. Saying that the kickstand at snowball, they must have changed the design, as every version I've ever had with a kickstand adds about a millimeter
So I bought the expensive official Google folio case without doing my research. It doesn't auto wake/sleep which is pretty annoying, I take it there is just a magnet somewhere that does this. Anyone heard of anyone modifying it or putting a magnet in? Anyone know where the magnet is located so I can experiment?
are you sure you have the Folio case? because the Folio case is the 1 that has the wake/sleep function, which on mine works fine...

I'm sorry, I don't have the folio case. I have the regular case that looks like a book. Its really not worth the hefty price tag.
Fixed the title.
Just get some magnets and experiment, the sensor is on the bottom near the usb port. You could glue a few magnets on the outside of the case. Most folio's have 3 to 4 magnets...Get some nice chrome magnets at harbor freight tools or micheals or joann etc. Just avoid the neodymium, I hear those are too strong. theres also the plastic strip type magnets, but I haven't tested those. But it should be as easy as walking over to your frig and trying it out...

When held in portrait orientation, the sensor is on the left bezel near the bottom. I added a magnet to one of my Verso cases and it works perfectly.
what brand case? or is this official nexus 7 case?
Agreed - not worth $49.99
I bought one at Best Buy. It is Google Branded and stamped and says Nexus 7 2013 on the box.
I'm returning mine because once you fold it to watch the screen, it no longer lays flat and there is no way to close it. Plus, you can get what appear to be much better ones on Amazon for under $20. :fingers-crossed:
I was wondering if anyone had thoughts or has even tried these types of car mounts.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nexcon-Magn...lde-/221655676812?hash=item339bb5378c&vxp=mtr
Its magnetic so I was wondering if people thought our Nexus 5 would work with it without the metal plate they supply. Seeing as the Nexus 5 has magnets in it's back I would think the only question is if the magnets used are attracted to the ones in the Nexus 5 and the placement of the magnets. I may get one to try out but I wanted to see people's thoughts anyway.
Well as far as I am informed and seen, inside your nexus 5 are metal discs not magnets, the magnets comes in the original nexus 5 wireless charger. Hope this make it more clear, and I think they made it a bit vague so you would get it then they would simply tells you to get their magmatic cover !!!

I wasn't sure if inside the Nexus 5 are magnets or, as you say, metal disks. I know my old Palm Pre had magnets in the back of the phone for it's TouchStone charger. I actually have two of those. And the Nexus 5 actually connects with that really well. Almost like it was made for it. If these docks are similar to what the TouchStone charger is as far as magnet placement, it should work really well without that metal plate they give you. But the plate does come with it to use with a phone case just in case. So I may just put down the 10 bucks or so and see how it goes.
Cool let me know what turns out, I may kick one too off ebay
I have this one in my car http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1427845784&sr=8-38&keywords=magnetic+car+mount
It works very well, and the phone stays locked in place. It attaches to the 4 metal plates in the back cover of the Nexus 5 meant for the official Qi charger. You can't use a case though, or the magnets won't be strong enough to hold. If you do use a case (thin TPU or thin hard case only) then you will need the metal plate insert for it to work. But even still, the phone sticks way better without a case. It sticks best in vertical position, if you do landscape it needs to be centered perfectly or it will start to twist back to vertical over big bumps, it won't come off, but it will turn.
I use an nGroove Snap (http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Magnetic-Smartphones-Tablets/dp/B00HMDYH2U) and it works just fine even without the metal plate.

Good to know that these do in fact work without those metal plates. I thought they'd might but thanks for confirming it. I don't use a case so it should be perfect for me. I'll definitely be getting one now.
Made my own car charger. Too bad my Spigen case is too thick, so can't use it. Or I just have to risk breaking my phone by not using the case..... Dilemma...
I use kenu airframe + google Nexus qi charger = perfect solution.
I ended up buying this one and it works perfectly.

Nope. It works as is. And it works nicely too. If the next Nexus doesn't have magnets, I'm going to be sad.
I have another mount, I believe it's called "iMagnet" which is almost identical. After using it for the past year with my nexus 5, I have some gripes about it. It's not an incredibly solid grip, which means every bump is going to make your phone start rotating one way or the other. I like to place my phone in landscape mode but since it's in landscape mode, the phone will twist on the mount until it's touching the dash. I'll periodically move the phone back to the center of the mount while I'm driving which probably isn't safe. Ive used my phone with cases, without cases, with dbrand skins, without. The official Google "bumper" and my spigen neo hybrid are both too thick for the mount to have a good hold, so it really slides all over the place. Using a skin, doesn't affect it too much though. If I were to get another car mount I wouldn't get one of these. It's not horrible, but it just gets annoying.

I have one, and I love it. I've got one of the slim Spigen cases and I put one of the metal plates between the phone and the case. I had to play with the position to make sure I could still use NFC, Qi charging, and GPS worked fine.
Now I feel super confident in my purchase. Thanks guys!
