Hi!
I want to flash my brothers Nexus to JB.
I found this link where its step to step guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170
Problem is that I don't know if the GN has a locked or unlocked bootloader as stock?
I guess it's the method 2 i should use if the phone is all stock with unlocked bootloader?
If its locked bootloader how can i unlock the bootloader?
Thanks for all help on beforehand!
Best regards,
DanVazz
since you can write in proper English, one can assume that you can read as well, did you try searching before posting this? its very simple go get the nexus toolkit here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310 << then to check if you have a locked or unlocked bootloader, restart the phone, if you see a black screen with just GOOGLE written on it, your bootloader is locked. If you see a black screen with google and a white lock on the bottom it is unlocked. GOod luck with your flashing

Don't recommend toolkits. OP already has the right link to flash JB, and just needs to follow the steps.
OP, just read and follow the guide. The phone does not have an unlocked bootloader stock. Unless you've unlocked it, it is still locked and you'll unlock before you can flash. Although the kit notes it several times, remember that the procedure will completely wipe your device.

That's you opinion, and I respect that. But if you want to drive a car, you take lessons and get licensed. If you want to own an Android smart phone, there are no lessons and no license. So, if you want to muck around with your phone, you need to have a bit of knowledge about how it works so you can help yourself out of messes, whether you're a dev or not (and I am not). So yes, this is 101. And besides, this is xda-developers.com not xda-fixmybrokendevice.com: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
It takes literally 4 lines to type or copy to flash using Adb. I don't know what's so hard bout it.

I agree with you.
What's hard is that people can't be bothered to read a bit to be able to type in a few lines. Everyone wants a 1-click.

I respect that ...and agree ...in a perfect world it would be easy to kick back and study up .....I only meant its not always basic and if you don't have time to do the research or work twelve hours in s. Mississippi heat digging irrigation lines come home to two kids four dogs a cat and a fking ***** ...its easy to get distracted....and penalties for mistakes are real....so I'm sure everyone doesnt rely as heavily on their device as I do so its different for everyone but anyway its all good ....my PHP.e is my work...my personal...my cell....my home ...helly only line of communication...so what the hell ..you only live once.....

Don't use the tool kit.
efrant and jubakuba have written excellent guides.
So many people are lost once there use of the tool kits fail.
A little bit of learning will save you a lot of pain.
so im pondering cus my fingers are twitching , do i root now or wait for s-off then root. or wait till after next ota then root???? opinions??
First thing you should do is search its been asked before. personally i am satisfied with stock so far. So its not too hard to wait for s-off. i have Desire as well so if i feel like flashing ill play with that

If you desperately want to root and your phone doesnt have any hardware issues do it now. But your warranty will be void by using HTCDev. If you can wait and I would, wait until we get S-OFF then you can do it without HTC knowing.
Don't think s off will ever be possible to be honest.that was the reason I went ahead and rooted.

ahh never say never, im sure the devs or alpharev or somebody will break it somehow!!
I had the same dilemma.
Finally I've unlocked, and rooted, because I'm very impatient.
I think if/when we will have S-OFF, then we will be able, to revert it to "LOCKED" (and not RELOCKED), and we will be able, to erase any trace of hacking/moddding. Then they will have no ground to void the warranty.
To root, or not to root, that is the question.

I thought that once you use HTC's official process they have it logged on their system, as they give you an individual token for your device? Is this something that could be removed? I always thought that once you cross that line there's no going back as they must store it on a server somewhere.
Anyhow I'm teetering closer and closer to using htcdev.com but always end up telling myself to wait another few days......been watching that s-off development thread like a hawk.
I used htc dev to unlock it and never locked back.
It's much smoother with ROMs like ARHD which means a better user experience to me. Stock didn't really satisfy me, because Sense lacked from time to time
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
think ill wait a while see if any ugly issues show up on the phone, i mean i didnt root my desire for a whole year, ( cus i did not know of its existence!!)
but hopefully with s-off we can go back to stock without htc knowing!!

yes, maybe they loggint, that you ask for the token.
but I think that doesn't mean that you used it. you can change your mind after you received it, or you can be noob, and you can't use it...
so it would be very bizarre, that they void the warranty because on some website you ask for a tool.
(if you have a gun in your hand, it doesn't mean you are a killer)
Was in the same boat as yourself. But rooted anyway and haven't looked back. Thank god I don't have to deal with Sense anymore.
i waited so much time... one week ago i said stop and i unlocked/rooted and installed cm10 much better!

Get a life people! Its not the end of the world when someone asks a question. Just politely answer or move on. Or is this your world?
You people surprise me.
To answer the questions... as there may be some terminology mix up here.
S-Off: Not yet
Root: Yes after HTC-Dev unlock. No exploit to avoid using HTC-Dev.
I earned 3/4 of my thanks helping people with either Epic, Epic Touch, NS4G, or GNex and I am scared as hell to unlock and root my One X. I paid someone $25 to link to my laptop with TeamViewer and handle it for me on my EVO LTE. I may do the same again if someone is down. Everything is so different.

It isn't that bad. It is pretty much impossible to brick this thing since we have S-On yet and people aren't running around flashing bootloaders on low battery and other stuff.
All it is literally is getting the oem token from fastboot, pasting it into the htc dev website, then flashing the bin file they give you. It does format /data (factory reset) on the device once you accept the agreement that shows on the device but you are then unlocked. All you have to do then is flash cwm and install supersu/superuser zip.
If you need additional help, feel free to PM me. I am drinking tonight so I may not reply immediately just an fyi .
I have purchased HTC one X from a third person and shocked to see that it has been rooted. I got this by looking the Superuser app in menu. I am really new to android and this technical world. One of my friend helped me in getting this known. This has also been unlocked.
I want to make the mobile to go back just like arrived from Factory. Would you please help me out with this?

I would see root as a good thing and not bad
You can never put the phone back to exactly how it came from the factory however you could :
- install a ROM such as this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546970 and then re-lock the bootloader.
- choose an appropriate nandroid from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140
- or find the correct RUU for your phone and install that.
personally i would embrace the rooted phone and try out some custom roms
Plenty of threads on how to install a rom and re-lock bootloader in here.

That has nothing whatsoever to do with being rooted.
Perhaps a custom ROM and/or kernel may improve battery life, but it has jack to do with it being rooted alone.

Now for the OP, learn about fastboot commands, many stickies about that here.
Then get your main version number with the following command
Fastboot getvar version-main
Post the outcome here and we (at least i) can help you get back to original stock software.

I honestly NEVER have understood the boot animation thing,
I sometimes go a week without rebooting my phone.
I should get into habit once a day, but still it's like 10 seconds maybe once a day, that 99.9% of the time only you see..
If a boot animation makes you dis-like your phone, I don't think that the phone is the right choice for that person.
also confused how it's getting old fast? Yes they shut down htc dev, but sonic is taking care of that, if someone can't put down $8.55 for $600 of insurance, then well, I guess no root for you.
No risk no reward. I know fully I may not get my HTC One back and in working order.
but I trust Sonic, I have faith with him and with a signature required and $600 of insurance I feel pretty safe with where my phone is.

Cool rant bro. I mean, half of what you said has nothing to do with anything... but I'm glad you were able to get all that off your chest.
I see now that the modders and tweakers at XDA never reboot their phones and enjoy watching carrier branding animations. Good to know! :good:

Yes I know that.
I suppose my point was, don't judge a phone by it's boot animation.
all is cool guys, one comment and it's like king of the hill to jump on the guy.
this is the internet, we all have our opinions.
I never said his were wrong..
man, it's just a boot animation guys, some care about it, (like the splash screens) some just don't care at all.
based on how you use your phone, and how much you reboot, etc. many variables.
